How many gigs does it take to spotlight index 550 gigs?

                          I had 450 gigs of free space on my laptop out of a total of 1000 when I asked the spotlight index to compile.  After it was done I only had 218 gigs.  Seems like a lot to me.  Is this normal?

I have a Macbook Pro 15 inch 2018.  Operating system is 13.6.3 Ventura.  I started the index I think 3 days ago.
