SQL Maintenance Plan failing

                          We have a Maintenance Plan active on our 2-node SQL cluster, which is failing since a week or so. The reason why it's failing is unclear to me.  These are the Tasks :

So my questions are :
1) Do we in fact need a maintenance plan, and are these the correct steps?
2) How can I figure out the exact reason why it's failing?  Eventvwr has very few details, and the Job Activity Monitor doesn't show details either.
