The "dbus_connection_read_write_dispatch" is better to be invoked from timer or thread?

Not sure how wpa_supplicant is using the "dbus_connection_read_write_dispatch" API while it communicate with NetworkManager? Should I use "dbus_connection_read_write_dispatch" API driven from timer or the thread for my RPI system which would be better option in terms of overall performance point of view? Please guide.
