Somehow, Apple's App Store app icons are duplicated in the Launchpad on my MacBook Pro running macOS 11.5 (Big Sur).
Since this is a system-level application, I cannot delete one of these redundant icons. I tried the strategies that I found on the Internet, i.e.,
1. Remove
~/Library/Application Support/Dock/*.db
2. Run defaults write com.apple.dock ResetLaunchPad -bool true
3. Run killall Dock
4. Restart the system
But these duplicated icons are still in Launchpad after reboot.
I am wondering how to remove one of them?

I can start Launchpad using a gesture on the trackpad, by searching for the app in Spotlight, or by double-clicking in the /Applications folder, but I can't launch it from the keyboard.
I have created a keyboard shortcut (System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts... > Launchpad & Dock > Show Launchpad), but it does nothing when I use it from my account. It works fine if I log in using a different local account on the same machine, so it is something specific with my configuration.
It doesn't matter what key combination I choose. The same key combination works fine when assigned to other actions, so I don't think it is another app trapping the keyboard shortcut.
I've tried resetting the Launchpad db (using TinkerToolSystem's Reset Launchpad to Factory Settings). This reordered the icons (as expected), but didn't fix the keyboard shortcut. I've tried a few command line suggestions (e.g. defaults write com.apple.dock ResetLaunchPad -bool true; killall Dock) as well as other suggestions, but they mostly seem to be trying to do what TinkerToolSystem did.
I am using macOS 15.3.2 (Sequoia) and I just rebuilt the system from scratch. I had the same problem intermittently on earlier versions of macOS too though.
I have no idea what to try next. The closest I could find online is: https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/437722/how-to-reset-launchpad-shortcut-after-it-stopped-working The suggestion did not work for me.

For years, I have used Alt+Space as a keyboard shortcut to open Launchpad. Today, I switched to a new MacBook (clean installation, no imported settings or anything) and one of the first things I did was to set Alt+Space as my Launchpad shortcut. It worked for some time but then stopped (possibly after updating the OS but this is not certain). In **Keyboard** > **Shortcuts**, Alt+Space is still shown as the shortcut for **Show Launchpad** and the box beside it is ticked. I have changed the shortcut back and forth to no avail. I have also destroyed the Launchpad DB to have it recreated, again to no avail.
Any ideas on how this could be fixed? Or is it possible that for any reason this was disabled in the macOS update I installed today? This shortcut is etched real deep into me and it would be a pain to unlearn it... Thanks!
EDIT: Guess I should add that after the update I'm running macOS 12.2.1.

When I manually call
/Applications/WireGuard.app/Contents/MacOS/WireGuard
it works fine, so the program itself is not at fault. How can I find out and edit what precisely the Launchpad thinks it's doing?

When exploring the new Launchpad feature, at first, it would seem as is it draws it's content primarily from the Programs folder.
It seems to be the case, however, that the Launchpad database is drawn from somewhere else.
For example, when installing a game through Steam, the game itself will not show up in the Programs folder, but *will* show up in Launchpad. In this particular case, I *want* it to be in Launchpad. The *drawbacks*, however, are that I am unable to remove the game from Launchpad and am unable to change the icon.
**Where can I *directly* view and modify *every* Launchpad occurrence?**

Right-clicking, sadly, seems to do nothing.
I'm not trying to delete items that are in Launchpad from my drive; I just want to see them in the Finder, so that I can move them around or perform other operations on them.

I've attached some screenshots to show you. I don't know how to get it down. No matter what I do to the screen, the icon is always stuck "on top" of it.
How do I make this go away? If you're curious, Spotify opened on the second attempt. The first attempt it just got stuck.

In my apple script, I use
do shell script
to call the command open -a "MyApp"
. Normally, when the application MyApp
is already open, its main window gets focused instead of opening a new instance.
However, on one of my machines the behaviour is different depending on how I opened the first instance:
- If I open MyApp
using the launchpad, then call open -a "MyApp"
, a new instance of MyApp
is opened.
- If I open MyApp
using open -a "MyApp"
, then subsequent calls to open -a "MyApp"
focus the main window of the already open instance.
EDIT: After some search, I found two instances of MyApp
. One in homebrew (which the launcher does not see for some reason) and one in $HOME/Applications
which I copied for the launcher. In particular, when I run
osascript -e 'POSIX path of (path to application "MyApp")'
I get /opt/homebrew/Cellar/myapp-1.0.0/MyApp.app/
When I launch MyApp
in the launcher, the application that is opened is the copy in $HOME/Application
, while when I call open -a "MyApp"
, the one in /opt/homebrew
gets openned.
So now the questions is, where is path to application "MyApp"
getting the path from? How do I deregister such an app?

I have my apps organised in folders in Launchpad. However, whenever a new app is installed most of the stuff in the last folder gets put in a new folder, which Launch Pad automatically names based on the type of apps they are; whether the new app is put there as well or simply placed outside all folders depends on the type of app it is. I would greatly appreciate it if you can point to the location where google is keeping those app launchers. I have looked for them in the hidden folders as well as Google folders in ~/Library
but I have had no luck.

It's been stuck in this state for quite some time.
I'm currently using Xcode, which is open. I have had various Xcode betas installed, in addition to the Mac App Store version. The latest Xcode RC was simply titled "Xcode.app" and overwrote the version from the Mac App Store in my Applications directory.
As I'm typing this, the "Installing" seems to have finally failed. It has begun downloading the entire 12.39 GB update again.
Why is the Mac App Store download stuck at "Installing"? How can I get this update to actually install?
