How can I find the serial number on a mac programmatically from the terminal?
What command can I use to retrieve the system's serial number from the unix command line? As `uname` will output some information about the software and hardware, I would like to retrieve the serial number from a command to use in a script.

Hello Apple community, I recently purchased an old Apple iPad (5th generation - 2017) from a marketplace, and I noticed something peculiar about its serial numbers. On the back cover, the serial number reads "DMPTL3GRHP9X." However, upon checking the serial number inside the iPad (in the Settings), it displays a different one: "DMPJJ6K8F186." Additionally, when I used the Apple website to verify the serial number, it showed that the iPad belongs to the "iPad 4e génération - 2012." This discrepancy has left me quite confused about the actual generation of my iPad. My concern is whether the iPad has been tampered with or if there is any possibility that components from a 4th generation iPad were replaced with 5th generation components, even though it shows the 5th generation in the "About" section in Settings. Has anyone else experienced a similar issue with their iPads? Can someone from the community or an expert shed some light on this matter? I want to make sure I have an authentic 5th generation iPad, and any guidance or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help!

Specifically, I need to know if by using your Apple ID to sign in to an apple device and make purchases, that Apple will take your Apple ID and associate it with that new device's serial number. **In other words, can Apple automatically or manually retrieve the serial number from a device simply by a user signing in with his/her Apple ID?** If the answer is YES, then this would mean that by signing into a device with your Apple ID would result in you providing Apple with your serial number with or without your consent OR knowledge.

I have two iPhone SE (2nd Gen.) that I need to get the serial number. Normally, I would just look at the back of the device, but it seems the back of this model is just totally blank, with only the Apple logo, and no serial number. Also I thought about checking the settings, but an employee changed the passcode from our normal passcode. We have some remote software that can remove the passcode from our managed devices, but we need to know the serial number in order to do that. It seems I have a chicken and egg problem. Does anyone know how I can get the serial number in this case? I read that with some models, it is inside the SIM tray, but I didn't see it on this model.

What exactly are the Serial Ports listed and why don't they have a "normal" numbering scheme?

**THE ISSUE:** Mac OS No longer has a serial number and shows "Serial Number (system): Not Available" in system profiler. **STEPS TO PRODUCE THE PROBLEM:** 1. I had a botched filesystem runnig mac os Catalina 10.5.7, and so i decided to do a clean install, and then do an internet recovery. To be sure my ssd was totally clean including the efi partition, i zero'ed the drive with dd. Then, booted to internet recovery, which oddly booted up to Big Sur recovery even though i never upgraded to Big Sur. I decided to install Big Sur anyway via internet recovery, and after the install, i noticed that in "**About this mac**" as well as through a terminal command, that my serial number was labeled as "unavailable", and is no longer recognized in the MLB of the "Mail logic board." 2. Furthermore, i noticed that my icloud automatically signed my mac out from my icloud interface in the settings panel on my iphone. I never signed myself out before erasing. **EXPERIMENTS AND QUIRKS:** One more strange quirk is that apparantly, this somehow also deactivated all of apples DRM (digital rights management) for any of the apps that i had purchased. I concluded this, because after the clean install from internet recovery, I DID NOT SIGN INTO ICLOUD. Then, instead of importing my files with migration utility, i simply dragged and dropped my digitally purchased app store apps from my time-machine backup, onto my clean install. After removing time machine drive, i opened the apps, and low and behold, all of them worked perfectly without asking me to sign into icloud, or log into the app store. How is this possible? **MY IDEAS PERTAINING TO THE ISSUE:** 1. Supposedly, once a certified apple technician burns a serial number into your logic board, it is impossible to remove unless you have specialized software that contacts apples servers with a registered signature and encryption key, and waits for apples servers to send authorization to write or remove the serial number from the logic board. Assuming that apples technology is impenetrable, then you would have to assume that someone stole apples special software and one of their keys, and used it on my logic board remotely to deserialize my mlb. 2. The other possibility, is that apples hardware and logic boards are flawed, and they can erase their oen serial numbers. other than that, im out of ideas. **MY QUESTION:** 1. Can someone explain how i lost my serial number, and explain the weird quirks (missing drm, unauthorized deregistering my mac from icloud) that are happening as a consequnce? 2. Then, can someone please tell me how I can get my serial number burned back into the mlb so that i can use imessage on my mac again? 3. I found a website with some software called BlankBoard Serialzer at https://www.macintoshrepository.org/26584-blank-board-serializer?ns=1 Could anyone tell me if this sofware is safe to use and if I should use it to re-burn my serial number into my mac? Thanks for any help! Check screenshots below! About this mac, serial number unavailable Macos big sur serial number unavailable

I have a MacBook Pro that got liquid spilled on it. I cleaned it up and everything works except the fact that it no longer has a serial number. When I go to look at System Information, it says "Serial Number: Unavailable." I've tried re-flashing the serial using Apple's Blank Board Serializer tool, which didn't work. I think that the place where the serial is physically stored on the board is somehow broken. So is there any way to "spoof" a serial number so that FaceTime and iMessage work correctly? I've been looking at trying to set boot arguments, or change kernel extensions, or something. Where in the boot sequence does the OS look for the board's serial number, and how can I change that? It seems to be stored in the NVRAM, but I can't access it.

I upgrade my brand new late 2012 Mac Mini's drive to an SSD and changed the RAM. Now when looking up the serial number in "About this mac" or System Profiler it just says "System serial#" : about my mac The Mini also performed an OS and EFI update before I noticed the problem. I cannot log in to iMessages and posts an the 'net lead me to believe the non-present serial number may be at fault. Already tried PRAM reset. Can it be easily reinstated or otherwise fixed ? ---------- Update: The only deleterious effect seems to be the inability to log in to Messages with my AppleID. [Earlier edit of this question referenced being unable to download Mountain Lion from the App Store, this issue turned out to be unrelated.] Apple Support sent a new machine and replacing RAM and SSD did not cause a repeat of the problem. This machine *is* able to log in to Messsages.

At present neither shutter count nor the iPhone serial number are embedded in iPhone picture metadata. Is there an app for that? Reason: Pictures come into a database from multiple sources. Using the date/time stamp already gives collisions due to camera burst mode, and multiple photographers. I would like to assign each incoming asset an asset number composed of model+serial number+shutter count. This generally works for mainstream cameras, but it doesn't work for iPhone. Is there an app that would add this in automatically?

I am looking for a way to search the serial number (of Apple products such as iPhones, iPads, Macs, etc.), and get information about the original configuration of that specific device. I am aware of [this](https://support.apple.com/specs/) (or the [JSON version](https://km.support.apple.com/kb/index?page=categorydata&serialnumber=SERIALNUMBER&callback=ACSpecSearch.categoryDataProcess)) page of Apple's site that allows you to get the specs page of the product from the serial number you search, but I would like to get the specific configuration of that particular device. For example, if I search my serial number for the MacBook Pro 2017 with 3.5 GHz Core i7, 16GB of Memory, and 1TB storage, I get a [general page](https://support.apple.com/kb/SP755?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US) without any of the information above. The page lists all the possible configurations instead of the specific configuration of my MacBook Pro. **Is there some way to search a serial number and get information about the configuration of a specific device?**

I plan to have a script run that will update our Macs with new Adobe licensing package/installer but I don't want it to run if the task has ran before. I'd like to see a script that can check for a local file (ex. /Library/adobecc2018.txt) which would get placed at this location after re-serialization has been completed once. If the adobecc2018.txt file is not there the full script will run. If the adobecc2018.txt is there I want to the script to end and not go any further. Also, I will have another .txt file sitting on a network share and I'd love to see the file get populated with the name of the computer once the script runs so we have a list of computers that we can look at to see which computers have been fixed and which have not. I found the script I worked on last year but we didn't use it. So the first part of my question is answered but still need to figure out how to add text into a .txt. So example: /share/adobeupdate.txt I'd like to see something like this: ComputerName-Date ComputerName2-Date ComputerName3-Date ComputerName4-Date ComputerName5-Date etc. #!/bin/bash echo "Adobe Update Script" #### #### If file /Library/Scripts/adobecc2018.txt DOES exist then exit #### if [[ -f "/Library/adobecc2018.txt" ]] ; then echo '2018/19 Adobe Serialization Fix Already Applied - No more actions required' exit fi #### #### If file /Library/Scripts/adobecc2018.txt does NOT exist continue script #### if [ ! -e "/Library/adobecc2018.txt" ]; then echo 'Adobe is using the OLD serial number - Now applying new 2018/19 Adobe Serialization' # touch /Volumes/shares/macscripts/adobecc2018_serialization_fix.command sudo touch /Library/adobecc2018.txt echo 'Adobe 2018/19 Serialization Completed' fi # Script End exit 0
