When traveling, I carry an old MacBook Air running Big Sur, and I use the stock macOS Calendar.app. I live in the Pacific Time Zone, and am now traveling in the Central European Time Zone.
While traveling, I often view and manage home time zone appointments and dates. So that these entries appear accurately in Calendar, I turn on Time Zone Support in Calendar > Preferences, set to reflect my home time zone. Calendar then displays in my home time zone, as I wish. However, the time and date in the Mac’s Menu Bar clock then reflect the home time and date, not the time and date where I am in a different time zone.
I would prefer the Menu Bar to reflect the time and date of my actual physical location, while the displayed calendar shows the time and date in my home time zone.
Can this be accomplished in the stock macOS?

I have long ago discovered that if I want to keep calendar event times in the local time zone to set the time zone as floating. In reality, that’s no time zone at all. This really important when scheduling flights.
This is easy enough to do in the Calendar app on macOS. It’s also easy to do if I construct VCALENDAR events manually. In either case, it works well on my iPhone (or iPad).
The problem is that I can’t find a way to do this from iOS itself. The timezone options don’t include floating, which means that though I can add an event on my iPhone, I have to go to a Mac to finish the job.
Is there a way to set the timezone to floating / remove the timezone on iOS? From the Calendar app, a third party app, a shortcut or even some code in Swift?
__Edit:__
A simple workaround is t create a dummy event on the Mac with a floating timezone. On the iPhone, I can then copy and paste as many times as I like.

I have reminders on my iPhone (which also pop up on my MacBook) to remind me to take medication at set times in the day.
I am currently traveling and would like the reminders to pop up at the same relative time, whichever time zone I am in. For example a reminder for 8:00am in my home time zone should still show at 8:00am in the time zone I'm currently in.
However the reminders are still showing relative to my home time zone, so currently my 8:00am reminders are showing at 3:00am.
How can I tell the reminders to show at the correct time in the current time zone? I know I can manually update each one, but I am hoping there is an automatic way (without leaving my iPhone/MacBook in my home time zone).
If it's device dependent - I would focus on my iPhone as I don't need the reminders on the MacBook.

However, this email uses the Hong Kong time zone (HKT) for the log in timestamp, despite my Apple Account region being set to France since 2020.

I want to set my clock 5 minutes faster than actual time. One way to do that is to turn of set time automatically and manually set the time.
But this way the time is incorrect doing
date +%s
will give incorrect timestamps. Also some websites and applications don't function correctly due to this like TOTP.
So then I tried setting a custom timezone offset with zic from https://github.com/eggert/tz .
$ echo "Zone Asia/Kolkata+05 5:35 - IST+05" | zic -b fat -d . -
This gave me a valid TZinf file.
$ file Asia/Kolkata+05
Asia/Kolkata+05: timezone data (fat), version 2, no gmt time flags, no std time flags, no leap seconds, no transition times, 1 local time type, 7 abbreviation chars
I tried setting timezone with systemsetup but it isn't allowing this timezone. Chatgpt suggest turning off SIP and moving the file but I cannot do that as I am on a work laptop.
$ sudo systemsetup -settimezone ~/Asia/Kolkata+05
/Users/karan/Asia/Kolkata+05 is not a valid timezone. The command 'listtimezones' will show a list of valid time zones.
$ sudo cp Asia/Kolkata+05 /usr/share/zoneinfo/Asia/
cp: /usr/share/zoneinfo/Asia/Kolkata+05: Operation not permitted
Exporting TZ variable to this timezone works with date and gdate utilities but I want to see system time with this offset.
$ export TZ="/Users/karan/Asia/Kolkata+05"
$ date
Wed Dec 25 03:42:09 IST+05 2024
$ gdate
Wed Dec 25 03:42:15 IST+05 2024
Also tried symlinking to localtime but it resets timezone to pacific time.
sudo ln -sf ~/Asia/Kolkata+05 /etc/localtime

- 22:52 [correct time: 00:24]
System set do auto time settings with correct time Zone. Restart didn't change anything. Time server set to default.
If I switch to Manual, the system uses the new date/time.
As soon as I switch back to auto, the system immediatly shows the wrong date and time.
**Any hints?**
Additionally,I right now remember, that the system shows for some weeks (?) **0:00 on the login screen** just after system boot.

This is possible on basically all mainstream computer operating systems, like macOS, Windows 10, Ubuntu.
For example in macOS, I have these two settings (
and
) separately. Similar settings exist in Windows 10 system settings, too.
However, on iPhone, there is only one option that handles both, or at least it seems like how it works, which is called "
".
Basically, I want my time to be synced automatically so it is accurate as possible. At the same time, I want to be able to manually configure it to a time zone that is NOT on my current location. There might be a lot of situations where this is useful and it is possible on all computer/laptop operating systems.
If there is no solution to this due to iOS system settings limitation, is there any workaround? E.g. using some other way or even app to sync time automatically or on-need? One ugly workaround that *might* work is to manually toggle the above setting on and off again. iOS remembers the manual time zone setup when I do this, so it is not terribly complex. However, I still want to see if there is a more elegant way to achieve it, like in the computer systems.
PS: Turning location service off for "System Services / Setting Time Zone" does NOT work. The phone still gets local time zone when the above option is turned on. I do not know how it works -- maybe it gets time zone info from my carrier or using my IP address, etc.

## The problem
MacBook Pro (Catalina
10.15.7
) decided to start showing GMT in the status bar and system preferences last week. It is physically in Pacific time (PST) and I'd like it to show that time instead.
## Troubleshooting thus far
Following Apple instructions
* System Preferences > Date & Time:
* "Set date and time automatically" is turned on using Apple Americas/U.S. (time.apple.com.)
(problem persists with all servers)
* "Set time zone automatically using current location` is turned on
* Time Zone correctly locates me in PST
* Time Zone listing is empty
* Privacy settings are turned on to allow location services for Time Zone & System Customizations
* Computer has been restarted several times
* PRAM has been reset several times
* Computer is connected to wifi
Following this post :
* localtime
is correct as are link to database and permissions
* Accessibility
has been reset
* ntpdate
has been run
## Current situation
(Really, more of "The Problem" but with a lot of the basic troubleshooting out of the way. Maybe this is "where it gets good".)
* date
returns the correct (local) time
* systemsetup gettimezone
returns GMT
* systemsetup listtimezones
returns Time Zones:
and nothing else
* systemsetup settimezone America/Los_Angeles
returns America/Los_Angeles is not a valid timezone
Did the timezone list somehow go missing? Can I add it manually? Is there an update I can run to re-link this somehow?
I'd like to resolve this without an OS re-install if I can. Help me Ask Different, you're my only hope.

Since last week (as of 1 November 2023), my MacBook has been showing the wrong date & time.
When I set the time & date automatically it shows a date that is 15 days. If I set the time & date manually, then on restart it again shows the wrong time.
Location services are **on** for everything. VPN is not active (warp Cloudflare).
Now every thing whenever I turn **on** the MacBook or restart the date & time, it resets incorrectly and I have to run this command in Terminal.
sudo sntp -sS time.apple.com
or
sudo sntp -sS time.google.com
but it's annoying to run every time and check the date & time.
I have the latest beta version (Version 14.2 Beta (23C5030f)) but I never faced this issue before with a beta version.
How do I fix it?

As you can see, it thinks I am in CDT although I'm actually in CST.
The "Set time zone automatically" doesn't work and has no effect. Location services are on and "Setting time zone" is on in the System Services under Location Services. I'm using macOS Ventura 13.2.
How can I switch the timezone, or disable DST?

I have no idea how to remove/recreate the zoneinfo link to point to /var/db/timezone/tz/2022a.1.0 nor any idea if the icutz entry needs to be changes as well :(
Note: the /var/db/timezone/tz fofolder now contains the 2 timezone folders, old and new:-

This has been an issue on and off over the years, but I have never got a fully working solution.
The problems occur mainly with flights from one time zone to another.
I have a flight for which I enter the start and end times, both local to the airport. However, the destination is in a different time zone.
On my iPhone. I have __Time Zone Overide__ turned off, and while in the destination city, I see 2 times for an event’s details: the local time and the time in the origin.
However, I find that:
- The time in the Event List shows only the origin time, not the local time.
- The reminder alerts at the origin time and not the local time.
This applies to other events which were set before the trip.
The question is __What do I need to do to see event times and alerts in the local time?__
To complete the story, I add the event on my iMac and then rely on my iPhone to keep me informed. Latest version of all software.
__Update__
I will be flying overseas in a few months, so I can put my possible solution to the test.
I have set the time zone of the flights to
floating
, which seemed to work when flying interstate earlier.
To be safe, I have also included the local times in the notes section so I can compare; I will also have the original tickets any way. A few years ago I was caught out by the time zone difference, but, fortunately I was early rather than late.
__Update 2__
I have just come back from an overseas holiday, which involved two other time zones and daylight saving.
I can safely say that setting _all_ times to floating
has ensured that all times are local, and everything works as expected.
I have taken to using floating times for all of my travel times, as well as for all of my automated events. What I need to do now is work our how to make it the default for other events.

I have a Schwinn recumbent exercise bike that uses blue tooth to update the Schwinn Trainer app on my iphone XR. The Schwinn trainer app automatically updates Apple Health. My problem is, that when I look at Apple Health, it shows the time of my exercise with the time an hour later than I actually rode the bike. That causes the exercise to show up on the next day in the Lose-It app if I complete my exercise after 11:00 PM. The time on my exercise bike, the Schwinn Trainer app and my iphone are all in sync. Does Apple Health have it's own time zone setting?
