how to troubleshoot and get audio (sound) working in linux

This is my motherboard: https://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z170A-X13.1/ has Realtek ALC892 motherboard audio, single 3.5mm green plug to two speakers. - when i install cleanly from **rhel-8.10-x86_64-dvd.iso** my audio works without having to do anything - if I install **Rocky-9.5-x86_64-dvd.iso** then nothing I have been able to do has gotten audio working; I've had this same problem [years ago] when using Centos 7.9 vs RHEL. what can I look at specifically, in my RHEL-8.10 now which has working audo, to compare to a corresponding install of Rocky Linux?
