existed.
Is there a way with stress
to tell it to do I/O operations to stress a specific set of disks such as my 4 disk Raid-0? Or does it only work on whatever the root file system is such as /tmp
? And if that's the case I've done systemctl enable tmp.mount
which means the /tmp
folder is no longer on disk negating the disk i/o function of stress ?

Centos 7 and Windows 10 Dual Boot Grub Not Saving Last Choice

I have a dual boot system with CentOS 7 and Win10. My install was totally vanilla (CentOS then Win10) and went fine. Everything is great except that grub does not appear to save my "last" choice from the boot load menu.
I dug through all the grub configuration files (e.g.
/boot/efi/EFI/centos/grub.cfg
) and all the code seems there for recording the last choice.
My /etc/default/grub
shows:
GRUB_TIMEOUT=5
...
GRUB_DEFAULT=saved
...
GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT=true
Is there anything obvious I am missing or need to do to enable this?
My /etc/efi/EFI/centos/grubenv
never apperas to record the latest selection.
It always has:
saved_entry=CentOS Linux (3.10.0-327.el7.x86_64) 7 (Core)
##########[...snip...padding to 1k]
I can't see this file from a Windows boot, but I did test via the "rescue Centos entry".
I manually set the value in grubenv
to Windows Boot Manager (on /dev/sda2)
(the Windows entry) and this works out okay. However, booting back into CentOS fails to change it.
It just seems I am missing something to enable this "save the last choice" behavior. Any ideas?

I am building a custom ISO for CentOS 7 and for now I am just intending for this to be an absolute minimal install (a proof of concept basically).
I am re-creating the ISO via using mkisofs.
The command I entered is:
Mkisofs –o custom.iso –b isolinux.bin –c boot.cat –no-emul-boot –V ‘CentOS’ –boot-load-size 4 –boot-info-table –R –J –v –T isolinux/
This successfully created the iso and allowed me to mount it in the optical drive of VirtualBox. Upon installation I am receiving an error within the rdsosreport.txt that says:
> localhost dracut-initqueue: Warning: Could not boot.
>
> localhost dracut-initqueue: Warning: /dev/root does not exist
So far I have:
copied .treeinfo, .discinfo into the root directory of where I am making the iso. Created subdirectory /isolinux with all the /isolinux data from the latest CentOS-7-x86_64-Minimal-1503-01 as well as the /images and /LiveOS directories. I have also copied over the repo .xml file into the root directory.
I have tried a multitude of kickstart files, but the current version I am using is ultra-minimalistic just to get this to work at some point.
install
cdrom
text
keyboard us
lang en_US.UTF-8
rootpw --iscrypted $6$XRIetvtFyLXRFVzZ$jX7xRxsN6M.DIqwJ9DQui9ytaqK3IAzauSqB4zeRNvMKJo6xCJQAk90XIaxh.SBn0IBtyZM7ZlHK8eSk55VnG0
timezone America/New_York --isUtc
clearpart --none --initlabel
%packages
@core
%end
My ks.cfg is located in isolinux/ks/ks.cfg and when I boot into the system I am running is
linux inst.ks=cdrom:/dev/cdrom:/ks/ks.cfg
I'm a little lost on where to investigate further as all I am trying to do is load a very simple kickstart file to get Linux to do a one-button install. I don't necessarily need to be told, just to be pointed in the right direction as I've tried quite a few different kickstart configurations and have come up with the same error.
edit:
I have gotten this working by editing the isolinux.cfg file and changing the volume ID to my -V volume ID set in my mkisofs and then selecting this menu option when doing my installation.
append initrd=initrd.img inst.stage2=hd:LABEL=CentOS quiet inst.ks=cdrom:/dev/cdrom:/ks/ks.cfg
I have other errors within the iso that I'm investigating now due to the fact my kickstart file is so barren.

I have a virtual machine with CentOS 7 at school, but I need to work from home.
So, I followed a tutorial to install Gnome and another to create a VNC server, all this to install TeamViewer.
Then, I install TeamViewer 11, but when I open it, it says the famous message:
Not ready, Please check your connection
I tried to input proxy settings, but it didn't save the changes, so I had to edit the
global.conf
file.
I know that the proxy is well in the system because I can navigate; I can even ping 178.77.120.1, and it works.
But the problem still remains. Then, searching the web, I saw I could change the SELinux config to permissive. I do that in another virtual machine, and that works, but it doesn't work on my machine. It has a Wine problem. I try to fix it using the following:
# setsebool -P mmap_low_allowed 1
but that doesn't work.
Another solution was to add to mdns4
to host in /etc/nsswitch.conf
, but it doesn't work.
So I decide to uninstall, using:
rpm -qa | grep teamviewer
rpm -e
But when I installed TeamViewer again, it loaded the proxy settings, so I think it didn't completely remove them.

Instead of following above process it is possible to alias names as below.

192.168.122.1:8080

192.168.122.1:8081

Can you please check and advice about the feasibility of above type of alias in CentOS 7.6 OS.

I want to install TigerVNC on my freshly installed CentOS 7 server,
version centos-release-7-4.1708.el7.centos.x86_64.
So besides other tutorials I've tried already, I followed the
Red Hat guide.
However with variable error messages depending on the tutorial I never got the service to start. The following is exactly what I did on a new installation of CentOS 7:
yum install tigervnc-server
cp /usr/lib/systemd/system/vncserver@.service /etc/systemd/system/vncserver@.service
vi /etc/systemd/system/vncserver@.service

There are 32 cores in a system (2 cpus each 16 cores) and I want to
limit a user to use only 4 cores (100% usage for that 4 cores). There
are two kernel parameter for that according to the manuals:
cpu.cfs_quota_us
and cpu.cfs_period_us
An example on the kernel.org document says:
With 500ms period and 1000ms quota, the group
can get 2 CPUs worth of runtime every 500ms.
# echo 1000000 > cpu.cfs_quota_us /* quota = 1000ms */
# echo 500000 > cpu.cfs_period_us /* period = 500ms */
I want to know how those ms are determined? In my case, I think the quota is 32000000 and the period is 4000000. Am I right? The content of etc/cgconfig.conf
is:
group ansys {
cpu {
cpu.cfs_quota_us = 32000000;
cpu.cfs_period_us = 4000000;
}
memory {
memory.limit_in_bytes = 8000m;
}
}
But it doesn't work! and I get an error when I run /etc.init.d.cgconfig start
, I get this error:
Failed to parse /etc/cgconfig.conf or /etc/cgconfig.d
[FAILED]Starting cgconfig service: /sbin/cgconfigparser; error loading
/etc/cgconfig.conf: Failed to remove a non-empty group

We have experienced a "black screen of death" after booting a CentOS virtual machine running on an Oracle VirtualBox. The screen is completely black, there is no mouse pointer. This seems to be related to upgrading the system, but we are not sure.
We've discovered that reinstalling guest additions and rebooting somehow fixes the problem. Here are the steps used to recover:
1. boot the VM, the screen should be black.
2. Ctrl + F2 -> a console login screen should be visible
3. On virtual box menu, [Devices] -> Insert Guest Additions CD Image...
4. Login to your linux system
5. su (or use sudo whenever required)
6. mkdir /media/cdrom
7. mount /dev/sr0 /media/cdrom
8. cd /media/cdrom
9. sh VBoxLinuxAdditions.run uninstall
10. sh VBoxLinuxAdditions.run install
11. reboot
Since we now know how to recover from the black screen, this is not a big problem. Still, anyone knows why this happens and how to avoid it?

I am running tigervnc-server on CentOS 6.8, however the gnome desktop won't start for me! I have done a yum groupinstall of "X Window System", "Desktop" and "General Purpose Desktop". On one of my other CentOS VMs (v6.6), installing these packages is sufficient for having the gnome-desktop automatically startup for me when starting a vncserver.
I'm running:
vncserver :05 -geometry 2048x1024
In /home/user/.vnc/hostname:05.log, I see:
vncconfig: unable to open display "hostname:05"
xrdb: Connection refused
xrdb: Can't open display 'hostname:05'
xmodmap: unable to open display 'hostname:05'
** (gnome-session:12313):WARNING **: Cannot open display
The VNC server starts, and I'm able to connect via vncviewer, but get a black screen.
Is there anything else I can look at to troubleshoot? The log isn't very helpful; I've been googling this problem for days, and haven't found anything that fixes it (Ex: made sure I'm in runlevel 5, I re-installed the desktop packages mentioned above, removed .vnc directory, stepped through xstartup, tried comparing various settings with my other VM where the gnome desktop is working)
Anyone know of something else I can look at to troubleshoot this issue? Any other logs, or things to check?

I am trying to run an executable that makes use of the libcrypto and libsll libraries. When I run the executable I get the following error
PROGRAM: error while loading shared libraries: libcrypto.so.10: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I understand that the above message is because the executable cannot find the associated library. The system has both pairs of libraries included in "/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu", which I installed using the synaptic package manager. I have tried to generate the symbolic links
ln -s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcrypto.so.1.0.0 /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcrypto.so.10
ln -s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcrypto.so.1.1 /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcrypto.so.10
ln -s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcrypto.so /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcrypto.so.10
but in all these cases I get the following error message:
PROGRAM: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcrypto.so.10: version `libcrypto.so.10' not found (required by PROGRAM)
I am currently using Ubuntu 20.0, and the executable I am trying to use was compiled for RHEL 6.6. My question is: Should I install RHEL (or centOS) to be able to use that executable?, or, the error is due to the fact that I am using the wrong version of the libraries.

While following https://access.redhat.com/solutions/64069
General documentation of the system state both prior to and after patching is always good practice. This should include running package-cleanup with following flags, --orphans, --problems, --dupes, --leaves.
Looking for orphans (packages which are not available from currently configured repositories) I did get
kernel-3.10.0-1127.el7.x86_64
and it would be true, because I've installed CentOS 7.8 and upgraded to 7.9 and the kernel package is in the https://vault.centos.org/7.8.2003/os/Source/SPackages/ repo not the 7.9.
[root@localhost boot]# package-cleanup --orphans

kernel-3.10.0-1160.6.1.el7.x86_64
kernel-3.10.0-1127.el7.x86_64
I can imagine that it would be advisable to run the above command in case I would like to use yum history undo
to revert last made changes, and that a given rpm
package would have to be available on the system, but if it was not removed during yum update
then do I need really to care if the package is marked as orphaned
?
Next, I executed the following command, to get a list of leaves ( Leaf nodes are RPMs that are not relied upon by any other RPM):
[root@localhost boot]# package-cleanup --leaves
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror

Per my understanding yum resolved all the dependencies and it looks like I'm free to remove the pacakage, but I'm wondering about the output of the rpm -q --provides
command. Is it correct to say that the 3 items listed is stuff that got installed together with the libsysfs.x86_64 0:2.1.0-16.el7
package AND since yum resolved all dependencies and no other stuff on the system requires this package + the packages/shared libraries it provides it can be removed without any issues ?
If that is true, why I'm not able to list the files installed as part of that rpm ?
[root@localhost boot]# rpm -qa libsysfs
libsysfs-2.1.0-16.el7.x86_64
[root@localhost boot]#
[root@localhost boot]#
[root@localhost boot]# rpm -qlp libsysfs-2.1.0-16.el7.x86_64
error: open of libsysfs-2.1.0-16.el7.x86_64 failed: No such file or directory
Thank you for any clarification is possible !

while true; do echo "showHistory userx"; done | nc -w1 xxx.xxx.xxx.xx 2222 > out.txt &
I tried a lot of google searches and read a lot of stackexchange questions but could not solve it. I played around with while
, tee
, mkfifo
but no luck.
The file out.txt
remains blank but has a lot of NUL
chars
Edit: I have updated showhistory
to showHistory userx
in order to highlight that it is a command to be supplied over telnet/netcat session
