Does gsettings have a GUI frontend?

So it's not possible to use dconf-editor on gsettings IDs.

I am running tigervnc-server on CentOS 6.8, however the gnome desktop won't start for me! I have done a yum groupinstall of "X Window System", "Desktop" and "General Purpose Desktop". On one of my other CentOS VMs (v6.6), installing these packages is sufficient for having the gnome-desktop automatically startup for me when starting a vncserver. I'm running: vncserver :05 -geometry 2048x1024 In /home/user/.vnc/hostname:05.log, I see: vncconfig: unable to open display "hostname:05" xrdb: Connection refused xrdb: Can't open display 'hostname:05' xmodmap: unable to open display 'hostname:05' ** (gnome-session:12313):WARNING **: Cannot open display The VNC server starts, and I'm able to connect via vncviewer, but get a black screen. Is there anything else I can look at to troubleshoot? The log isn't very helpful; I've been googling this problem for days, and haven't found anything that fixes it (Ex: made sure I'm in runlevel 5, I re-installed the desktop packages mentioned above, removed .vnc directory, stepped through xstartup, tried comparing various settings with my other VM where the gnome desktop is working) Anyone know of something else I can look at to troubleshoot this issue? Any other logs, or things to check?

How to REALLY, COMPLETELY disable Gnome tracker?

Disabling the resource-hogging, data-copying Gnome tracker daemons is much harder than it ought to be. I'm running a recent installation of (stable) Debian 11.2 with Gnome. One suggestion I found was to edit all /etc/xdg/autostart/tracker-*.desktop files such that X-GNOME-Autostart-enabled=false (it was true) Although this allegedly worked for somebody, once upon a time, alas, this change had no discernible effect. Since I'm running version 2 of the tracker stuff I also tried:
systemctl --user mask tracker-store.service tracker-miner-fs.service tracker-miner-rss.service tracker-extract.service tracker-miner-apps.service tracker-writeback.service
That worked, evidently, although the system log still constantly reports that tracker services are "successful". Maybe those entries are artifacts of how systemd is being configured for tracker services. The problem with that "masking" method turned out to be that the reverse operation (mask -> unmask), to re-enable tracker daemons did not work for me. (Yes, I rebooted, as instructed. Nevertheless, the tracker daemons didn't return to operation.)

First let me describe my system. It's Mint 19.0 (Tara). Mint itself isn't the problem, but it's upgrade mechanism seem to have triggered the issue. It came after upgrading from Mint 18.3 to 19.0. I did post a question on Mint's forums, but then I did not know what was broken, and in the process of finding that out I kind of "overloaded" my issue report there. So I try to be concise here. PolicyKit has some problem authorizing priviledge escalation. I am the owner of the system, and previously there were only my account and a guest account. After upgrading, I could no longer launch Synaptic via the menu (which calls synaptic-pkexec) and all other programs that need priviledge escalation also won't start, leaving a fail message in auth.log. No dialog pops up asking for my password. Launching synaptic-pkexec from command line simply yields Error executing command as another user: Not authorized This incident has been reported. Quote from auth.log: Jul 15 12:07:42 MYMACHINE polkit-agent-helper-1: pam_unix(polkit-1:auth): conversation failed Jul 15 12:07:42 MYMACHINE polkitd(authority=local): Unregistered Authentication Agent for unix-session:c2 (system bus name :1.61, object path /org/gnome/PolicyKit1/AuthenticationAgent, locale de_DE.UTF-8) (disconnected from bus) Jul 15 12:07:42 MYMACHINE polkitd(authority=local): Operator of unix-session:c2 FAILED to authenticate to gain authorization for action com.ubuntu.pkexec.synaptic for unix-process:9863:4513929 [/bin/sh /usr/bin/synaptic-pkexec] (owned by unix-user:MYUSERACCOUNT) Jul 15 12:07:42 MYMACHINE pkexec: MYUSERACCOUNT: Error executing command as another user: Not authorized [USER=root] [TTY=/dev/pts/0] [CWD=/home/MYHOMEDIR] [COMMAND=/usr/sbin/synaptic] Jul 15 12:07:42 MYMACHINE polkit-agent-helper-1: pam_unix(polkit-1:auth): auth could not identify password for [MYUSERACCOUNT] Jul 15 12:07:42 MYMACHINE polkitd(authority=local): Registered Authentication Agent for unix-session:c2 (system bus name :1.220 [/usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1], object path /org/gnome/PolicyKit1/AuthenticationAgent, locale de_DE.UTF-8) My guest account, however, can do everything. It is asked for the password, and then Synaptic, Upgrade Manager, just everything works as intended. Also, when I create new users (regardless whether they are created as admins or as users, and added to sudo group) they also can to everything. So I figure it is somehow connected to the user ID. Another observation: I know GUI programs shouldn't be launched via sudo. But when I issue sudo synaptic-pkexec - Synaptic starts... I have already checked that 1. PolKit Daemon is running via Autostart 2. PolKit Agent for Gnome is running via Autostart 3. file permissions for the user home directory are set correctly I also did
apt-get install --reinstall
on everything PolKit related. Everything else besides PolKit runs just fine... I can add inxi statement, if that helps.

I am new to linux, used to use windows. I am trying to convert to linux and I really love it. I am trying Ubuntu 14.10. I have a question about how to find the installed applications easily in Linux. You know in windows, after I installed an application, I can always find it in the "all application" list. Even no, I can always try to search for its folder from the bottom. However, I am trying two DE, Unity and Gnome 3.12, and it seems that it's more difficult to do this. For example, I've just installed Anaconda3. After installation, it does not show up in the launcher nor the "all application list". I tried to search "Anaconda" or "Spyder" but hits nothing. It looks like it's also impossible to open the file manager to show all folders in the partition on which ubuntu is installed. I can open a terminal and "cd /" and then search it? But that's text interface. So my questions are: Are there any way to find an installed application easily. Is there something like the file manager in windows that can show all the folders in the linux partition or in the whole harddisk?

I'm using GNOME on Debian 13 (Trixie), and I noticed that the icons in the Dash (on the left side of the Activities overview) are much larger than they were in Debian 12. I’m not sure why the sizing changed or how to fix it. I’ve tried editing the gnome-shell.css file directly to reduce the icon size, but I’m not sure which selectors or properties I need to modify to achieve the correct look. I’d prefer not to use third-party extensions like Dash to Dock — I want to keep the default Debian experience, just with the icon size fixed. Does anyone know what exactly I need to edit in the CSS (or any other method) to restore the normal icon size in the Dash? also here is a screenshot: screenshot and the css file
/* Dash */
#dash {
  padding-left: 6px;
  padding-right: 6px; }
  #dash .dash-background {
    background-color: #38383b;
    border-radius: 28px;
    padding-top: 12px;
    padding-bottom: 12px;
    padding-left: 10px;
    padding-right: 10px; }
  #dash .dash-item-container .placeholder {
    background-image: none;
    background-size: contain;
    height: 32px; }
  #dash .dash-item-container .empty-dash-drop-target {
    width: 32px;
    height: 32px; }
  #dash .dash-item-container .show-apps,
  #dash .dash-item-container .overview-tile,
  #dash .dash-item-container .grid-search-result {
    margin: 0 2px;
    padding-bottom: 12px; }
this is not the complete CSS.

RHEL 8 authentication required window is not taking correct password
I'm running RHEL 8, and occasionally, I get an issue where the authentication window won't accept my password. I know I am entering it correctly because it is the same password I use to log in to the system. Checked `/var/log/secure` but didn't see anything useful. Could it be related to `pam.d`?

How should I handle two seemingly conflicting XDG Desktop Entry requirements?

According to my understanding of the [File Naming section](https://specifications.freedesktop.org/desktop-entry-spec/latest/ar01s02.html) in the XDG Desktop Entry Specification, I should name my .desktop file following reverse-DNS notation: > The name of the desktop entry should follow the "reverse DNS" convention: it should start with a reversed DNS domain name controlled by the author of the application, in lower case. The domain name should be followed by the name of the application, which is conventionally written with words run together and initial capital letters (CamelCase). For example, if the owner of example.org writes "Foo Viewer", they might choose the name org.example.FooViewer, resulting in a file named org.example.FooViewer.desktop. Naming the desktop file this way and placing it in XDG_DATA_HOME/applications and then running xdg-desktop-menu forceupdate afterwards does indeed result in my application showing up in all the usual places.. except for gnome. For some reason, my application won't show up in the "Recommended Applications", Gnome's equivalent to the "Open with.." in other File Managers/Desktop Environments. The desktop is valid according to desktop-file-validate. After a quite a bit of digging, I came across recommendations to use another program, xdg-desktop-menu install to validate the file. When I did, it produced the following error: > xdg-desktop-menu: filename 'org.example.FooViewer.desktop' does not have a proper vendor prefix A vendor prefix consists of alpha characters ([a-zA-Z]) and is terminated with a dash ("-"). An example filename is 'example-org.example.FooViewer.desktop' Use --novendor to override or 'xdg-desktop-menu --manual' for additional info. When I tried this by removing the reverse DNS notation and just naming the file example-FooViewer.desktop, it finally showed up in gnome. Now I'm confused. Why is gnome breaking when I name my file according to the spec? Why does xdg-desktop-menu deny processing this file despite it conforming to the spec? Why is gnome NOT breaking for other similarly-named desktop entry files - all Flatpaks show up in gnome's "open with" menu despite their desktop entries being named in reverse-DNS notation and most not containing vendor prefixes or so much as a single dash! What is going on here? and how should I handle this conflict as an independent third-party packager? Am I missing something?

I have .desktop files (shortcuts) on a RHEL 8.8 machine that are set up correctly and work on other RHEL systems, but for some reason, whenever trying to launch (double click) on these desktop files FROM the GUI it opens them in gedit. There used to be an option when right clicking on these files to "Allow Launching" which was part of our installation instructions for customers but that doesn't exist in the RMC menu anymore for any of the .desktop files. They are all set to executable. I installed the GNOME Tweaks and other add-on extensions and it's all set to use shortcuts. My software's shortcut is proprietary so I'm sharing one for Perforce. Getting a crash course in MIME types and GNOME desktop, but nothing is helping. I am comparing the /usr/share/application and /usr/share/packages locations and so far everything matches the systems where this functionality WORKS. Here's an example of one of the .desktop files:
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
MimeType=application/x-desktop
Name=P4V
Icon=/home/tcgllc/Perforce/p4v-2023.4.2558838/lib/P4VResources/icons/p4v.svg
Exec=/home/tcgllc/Perforce/p4v-2023.4.2558838/bin/p4v
Terminal=false
Path=/home/tcgllc/Perforce/p4v-2023.4.2558838/bin
One crazy aspect of this is that double clicking on them in the Files app (opened to ~/Desktop) works! It's JUST the .desktop files, in ~/Desktop, via double clicking on the gui. Tried all of the following: Copied P4V.desktop to /usr/share/applications
gio set P4V.desktop metadata::trusted true
gio set P4V.desktop metadata::trusted yes
xdg-mime default P4V.desktop application/x-desktop
update-desktop-database /usr/share/applications
update-mime-database /usr/share/mime
xdg-desktop-menu install /usr/share/applications/P4V.desktop --novendor
when I run file --mime P4V.desktop the output is
/home/tcgllc/Desktop/P4V.desktop: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
I have the free RHEL Developer subscription but it's self supported, RHEL Knowledgebase has been searched. I've been pulling my hair out for 2 days. I've tried everything I could find on google and I'm screaming uncle. If anyone can help me with this issue I would be immensely grateful! TIA KL Editing to add what I've tried based on chubblywarner's comments (sorry new here, I just saw it said to edit original post!?) YES you are correct in all of your initial points. I ended up re-creating the .desktop file and removing the copies of it I had placed all over the system to "start fresh". $ nano P4V.desktop (made updates to .desktop file) $ chmod +x ~/Desktop/P4V.desktop $ sudo update-mime-database /usr/share/mime $ sudo update-desktop-database $ gio info P4V.desktop standard::icon: application-x-desktop, text-x-generic standard::content-type: application/x-desktop standard::fast-content-type: application/x-desktop standard::symbolic-icon: application-x-desktop-symbolic, text-x-generic-symbolic, application-x-desktop, text-x-generic access::can-read: TRUE access::can-write: TRUE access::can-execute: TRUE access::can-delete: TRUE access::can-trash: TRUE access::can-rename: TRUE owner::user: tcgllc owner::user-real: tcgllc owner::group: tcgllc selinux::context: unconfined_u:object_r:user_home_t:s0 xattr-sys::security.selinux: unconfined_u:object_r:user_home_t:s0 metadata::nautilus-icon-position: 0,283 $ xdg-mime default P4V.desktop application/x-desktop $ gsettings get org.gnome.nautilus.preferences executable-text-activation 'launch' $ grep -r "application/x-desktop" ~/.config /etc/xdg /home/tcgllc/.config/mimeapps.list:application/x-desktop=org.gnome.gedit.desktop; /home/tcgllc/.config/mimeapps.list:application/x-desktop=P4V.desktop $ getenforce Permissive I'm not sure if anything below is useful, but it does look like there are warnings, permission issues? $ journalctl -b | grep -i desktop .... Unfortunately, I still only get gedit double clicking on the .desktop file ON the desktop. And still, when I double click on the .desktop files in the Files App, it will launch correctly. I'm going to include a visual of this. I do get the "Untrusted application launcher" pop up the first time running P4V.desktop in the Files App. Thereafter, the icon shows as expected. enter image description here Also, if I am responding to or communicating with you incorrectly, let me know what I should do if different. :) TYSVM

Why is Gnome fractional scaling 1.7518248558044434 instead of 1.75?
If I set 175% scaling in Gnome Settings, the value is saved as `1.7518248558044434` in `~/.config/monitors.xml`: ```xml 0 0 1.7518248558044434 yes DP-3 ``` Why is it so? I have been using the [gTile](https://github.com/gTile/gTile) Gnome shell extension. In gTile, I defined specific preset window positions, along with the keyboard shortcuts Super+1, Super+2, etc. to apply them. This was all working fine until a recent update of Gnome. After the update, some of my shortcuts now seem to do other random things, while other shortcuts don't seem to do anything at all. I looked in *Settings → Devices → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts*, but the Super+1, Super+2 shortcuts didn't even seem to be defined. I also uninstalled all other Gnome shell extensions (thinking that other extensions might be setting their own shortcuts) but that didn't help. **Why are these shortcuts un-remappable and how can I make them remappable again?**

On a nearly identical machine gdmap looks fine. I have libgtk-3-0 and libgtk-4-1 installed and when I enter sudo apt-get install gdmap nothing is asked to be installed and I already tried reinstalling. Other apps like Firefox and Lutris look normal. It's not only gdmap but also other apps, namely VeraCrypt which I installed locally and GParted. The icons can't be seen. LibreOffice is also broken and looks like very old software.

while launching it from terminal, it starts successfully! and I get:

Running /home/mattia/.local/share/torbrowser/tbb/x86_64/tor-browser/start-tor-browser.desktop
Launching './Browser/start-tor-browser --detach'...
same happens with picard, torbrowser or masterpdfeditor instead GPXSee starts fine! It looks like **gnome-shell** ignores customized variable **QT_QPA_PLATFORM** (which I defined in *.bashrc*), so I tried launching torbrowser forcing that variable as empty, and it segfaults, as well:

This application failed to start because no Qt platform plugin could be initialized. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

Any help is welcome! **EDIT-1:** system does not have XWayland, or better, I disabled it from gnome-shell[[1] ]; --- Arch Linux, GNOME 48 under Wayland, qt{5,6}-wayland packages installed

GNOME is not completely removed in Kali Linux
I installed GNOME on Kali Linux, then I decided to remove it and use Xfce 4. So I try ``` apt-get remove gnome-core ``` but GNOME is in the login menu and my system chooses GNOME file manager for inserting files and uses GNOME login panel when I turn my system on. How can I remove GNOME completely?

How to disable the automatic mute after booting in gnome?
Whenever I start up, gnome sets the volume to mute automatically. So how can I ask it to remember the volume last time I set before shutting down?

10-key (numeric keyboard) not working when connected via VNC to Fedora 35 or Ubuntu 21. Both are using GNOME - is this a bug?

I use VNC (RealVNC "VNC Viewer" app) on my Mac to connect to Linux desktops: Fedora 35 & Ubuntu 21. They both are using GNOME desktop: 41.1 for Fedora, and 40.5 for Ubuntu I recently discovered that **the 10-key (numeric) part of my Mac keyboard no longer works on either desktop when connected via VNC**. These are both physical machines, but I have not yet tried actually connecting the same keyboard to the Linux machines yet since I need the VNC connection to work. I have disabled "Mouse Keys" but this has no effect and did not resolve the issue. Is this a bug in GNOME perhaps? Worth mentioning that the 10-key does work in Windows and macOS when connected via VNC. Also, for whatever reason the 10-key **does** work in the calculator app in Linux, but nothing else. When trying to use the 10-key to enter numbers in a text editor app I just get the "ding" error sound. When trying to use it in the terminal it prints outs all caps letters: for example - 123456789 shows: [me@fedora35 ~]$ BDECA I have reloaded the OS and the issue persists - this is a problem with my CLIENT machine (macOS), not the Linux VNC server (Fedora, Ubuntu, etc).
