On our computers Db2 v11.5.8.0 Linux/x86-64 is installed. I would like to install new fixes as regular update, specially to deploy security fixes.
Couple of weeks ago new fixpack 11.5.9.0 was released. But now I see Cumulative Special Build is listed on Download Db2 fixpack web page too. Looking into detail of CSB web page, there is info: *"CSB are cumulative, each CSB contains all fixes delivered in previous CSB."* If I understand correctly, CSB should not be installed on top of v11.5.9.0, but on top of previous CSB (if installed at all on Db2 server). Is this correct?
What is the purpose of CSB in the first place? To only contain security and failure fixes without new features? What is the release of Db2 after applying CSB?
Thanks

Most of my SQL Servers are on 2016 SP2. The security group have identified that I need a later security update applied and as SP2 is out of support this year I planned to just patch it up to SP3.
The problem is I have never actually patched SQL Server and was wondering what a good process would be to follow when applying the service pack. I have seen some online, all roughly the same, but just need some opinions on the best way to go about it.
Some questions I have, from looking at these processes online are:
- I'm assuming the SQL Server instance will need to be restarted. Is this done automatically when installing the patch?
- Does all activity on the instance need to be stopped? I.e., do all application services communicating with the instance need to be shut down?
- Should the SQL Agent be stopped as well?

Applying SP2 to the passive node produced a result indicating four installation failures (as per FIGURE 1).

When we begin to re-apply SP2, we can see that the Build Number is correct and the Upgrade Status is "Incompletely Installed" (as per FIGURE 2).

**AND SO THE QUESTION:**
Will the passive node remain in an Incompletely Installed upgrade status *until* the active node is failed over to the passive (making the passive node ACTIVE)?

Updates are available:
SQL Server 2016 Service Pack 2 (KB4052908)
If service packs are cumulative, why does the server says this. Any thoughts? Thanks.

We are currently using SQL Server 2016 Standard Edition with ALWAYS-ON High Availability. We have two different clusters of SQL servers. We need to update it to the latest version of SQL (As per my research Cumulative Update package 13 (CU13) for SQL Server 2016 SP)
Cluster 1 - Currently on Microsoft SQL Server 2016 (SP2-CU4) (KB4464106) - 13.0.5233.0 (X64)
Cluster 2 - Currently on Microsoft SQL Server 2016 (SP1-CU12) (KB4464343) - 13.0.4541.0 (X64)
Query 1 - Can we update SP1-CU12 to directly SP2-CU13
Query 2 - Can we update SP2-CU4 to directly SP2-CU13
Query 3 - What steps should be taken before and after upgrading
Query 4 - What should be the roll-back plan, incase of failure
Any other word of advice or caution for someone doing for the first time will be appreciated.

How to update SQL Server 2005 clustered instances?

We have a 3 node cluster with an instance running on each.
Windows 2003 R2 32bit (16GB) / SQL Server 2005
I want to bring them all up to build 9.00.5266 (SP 4 + CU3) (1 Node is already updated)
The links and articles I have found haven't been very helpful in terms of order installation and gotchas.
Our test cluster nodes were already at 9.00.5266. (My predecessor did that before I arrived).
I updated the test cluster instances to 9.00.5292 (Cluster only has 2 nodes)
Although I got there, this did not go as expected....
The plan was :
1. Move all instances to node2
2. Update the instances on node1
3. Reboot node1
4. Move all instances to node1
5. Update the instances on node2
6. Reboot node2
7. Move an instance to node1
I got to step 5. Then the installer said I had to use the active node. That means that the instance must go offline.
Is this a pitfall of SQL Server 2005 or am I doing this wrong?
Why did the first update work?
There are only few hotfixes available after build 9.00.5292 (All via links from MS upon request) so I can't experiment any further without reinstalling the test cluster.
I'm sure there are a couple of DBAs out there that have experience with updating SQL Server 2005 clustered instances. [Smile]

We've been running SQL Server 2014 for almost a year now, but SQL Server 2012 SP3 continues to appear in the Windows Update list (as an optional install). It seemed ridiculous to install a service pack from a previous version, so I've just ignored it.
However, we've recently started encountering an assertion failure (see below for more info), and one thing we're doing to try and resolve it is making sure the server is fully patched. We installed the latest cumulative update for 2014, but it hasn't solved the problem or made that SP3 item disappear from Windows Update. SP3 still wasn't on my radar, but then I found a [Microsoft Product Support Services blog post](https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/grahamk/2008/06/25/sql-server-assertions-and-dumps-a-typical-example-and-some-proactive-help/) that said to use the Best Practices Security Analyzer to try and troubleshoot assertion failures, and when I did it raised a warning that we hadn't applied that SP3.
So now I am considering applying that install, but I'm worried that I'm going to accidentally downgrade my server - not that we'd go back 2012 entirely, but that some of the cumulative updates might get reverted, or some other bizarre behvaior.
([This](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2933103) is not the exact assertion failure we've been receiving, but it's close. I cannot find a KB article that seems to describe the actual issue we're having - the KB linked in the previous sentence has to do with
TOP N
and ours has to do with a procedure using OFFSET X ROWS FETCH NEXT Y ROWS ONLY
. The actual assertion failure is SQL Server Assertion: File: , line=12258

Current plan is to update SQL Server to 2014 SP3 (right now it's RTM). Are there any problems I should be aware of?
I do plan on trying it out on a non-production server first - but unfortunately can't get the same exact Windows version.
Is there some script or utility to healthcheck SQL Server installation? I doubt that manually running sql statements will be very thorough. I only found Brent Ozar's blitz so far.

We are currently running our database server on SQL Server RTM; i.e. no service packs or cumulative updates have been installed.
We need to install the latest Service Pack for SQL Server.
I had the following questions based on this subject, I was told I needed to stand up new servers and transfer the databases to that server.
1. Will installation of a SQL Server service pack affect any of our production databases? We will do this in test first but still wanted to ask.
2. Do we need to restore the databases, after installation of a service pack? I will be doing a backup of the databases before we apply the SP, just want to know how it affects the database.
3. Are there any particular prerequisites we need to follow before the installation of service packs? Backup of course, but are there any others?
5. How can I determine if there are any known bugs in a given service pack? Should any Cumulative Updates be installed after the service pack?
6. Can I directly jump on to install SP3, instead of installing SP1 or SP2 first?
