Find my iphone questions when battery dies on iphone12

My teenage son was out last night and his location stopped updating on my wife's "Find my iPhone" app around 7pm. We suspected he had turned off his location, but he's saying that his phone died. Everyone else in my family uses iPhones, but I'm an Android user, so I can't use the "Find my iPhone", although I can see it on the website. I looked at his battery history this morning and it looks like it never totally died: It's also my understand that iPhones will try to update their location for a while after they "die."
