Started getting error messages after uninstall of
PS
and install of the new module SqlServer
when evaluating policies on remote servers using Registered Servers and Invoke-PolicyEvaluation
cmdlet. It was working alright previously with the old PS
module but the new replacement module requires TrustServerCertificate=True
parameter which is missing from the syntax of Invoke-PolicyEvaluation . Error message is:
> A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an
> error occurred during the login process. (provider: SSL Provider,
> error: 0 - The certificate chain was issued by an authority that is
> not trusted
How can I make it work again?
Thank you

I have a jump\terminal server to administer 100 SQL Servers and want to evaluate my locally created policies across all the servers by using the Central Management Server but WITHOUT:
1) creating the policies on the target servers and
2) using the SSMS.
I need it to be run either with Powershell or T-SQL, doesn't really matter. I was trying to achieve this by iterating through a CSV file for each line holding the hostnames or by querying
msdb.dbo.sysmanagement_shared_registered_servers
system table but so far no luck. Any way to accomplish this feat?

Multi-server administration - force poll on target fails, server needs to be registered locally without FQDN

I'm experimenting with multi=server administration on my SQL lab. Running SQL 2012 Enterprise SP1 on Windows 2008 R2 on a domain.
I've created a domain account for my sql server agent user on each server including the master. I was able to create the Master and set Targets to two other servers. The targets are added via the registered servers (FQDN) on the CMS which is also the master.
When i go to the master, right click > Multi-Server Administration > Manage Target Servers, i see the servers are listed using the short sever name not FQDN. When I click Force Poll, I get an error message:
**This operation requires SQL3 server to be a registered server. (SqlManagerUI)**
In order to work around this, i have to setup a LOCAL server registration and use the short name SQL3 instead of a FQDN.
This seems rather inconvenient to say the least - why do i have to register each server locally to use this feature? Why is it relying on the short name and not FQDN. These servers are already registered in my CMS which is also the master server. I could see this being a big problem when managing many servers - would i have to locally register a 100 servers??

Unfortunately, when I run the same query in SSRS, it only returns the server information that it is querying from. I see this same question, but it's from 2012 . Wondering if anything has changed for SQL 2019.

Schedule SQL Jobs from Central Management Server

Within my environment we currently have a MSSQL installation which serves as the Master in a Multiserver Agent environment (MSX). Due to this server being within a tightly controlled network the necessary ports for MSX functionality have not been opened.
As shown in the image, when I try to enlist a target (TSX) to the master (MSX) I am given an error that the RFC server is not available, I am also unable to deploy multi-server jobs to targets.
What ports should I request to be opened from targets to the master and vice versa?

I have a MS-SQL instance configured to be a CMS for 50+ instances of MS-SQL Server 2008-2017. When checking the msdb.dbo.sysmanagement_shared_registered_servers_internal I see a list of the servers and their associated groups.
However when I connect to the instance remotely (from my Desktop via SSMS), the Registered Servers list only displays an offline SQLExpress instance in "local server groups" associated with my local PC - and nothing at all under "Central Management Servers".
When RDP'ing to the CMS directly, in SSMS the Local server group correctly shows the CMS instance under "Local Server Groups" but it's empty - and again, "Central Management Servers" is empty.
Any help on how to usethe existing CMS server list would be appreciated, as rebuilding it would take some time and I'm unsure on any side effects of essentially overwriting another CMS configuration on top of the existing one.
Note: I didn't build the existing CMS nor have I used it previously.

After changing the Collation of SQL Server to Latin1_General_CI_AI from QL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS I'm trying to add the server back to MSX as target in CMS but Enlisting is failing. One thing I forgot to do before SQL Collation change was defecting the server. Now I'm not sure if it is because of not defecting the server or changing collation that has caused this? I'm able to connect to the target server from CMS and vice versa using SSMS

I am querying a group under a Central Management Server, which results in the following being logged to the SQL Server Error Log.
Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 38. Login failed for user
'domain\account'. Reason: Failed to open the explicitly specified
database. [CLIENT: xx.xx.xx.xx]
This error is only appearing on this one particular SQL Server in this group. Running a Profiler Trace on this server and reproducing the login failure brings up the following User Error Message:
Cannot open database "" requested by the login. The login failed.
My account belongs to an AD group which is apart of the sysadmin server level role. The AD group's default database is the master database. The SQL Server's Connection Properties, Connect to database: is set to ``. Which is no different from any of the other SQL Servers in this group.
Any reason why this would occur?
* The error appears in the trace once I click New Query and the window opens. Before any querying actually occurs.
* Removed and re-added the server registration, error still appears.
* I can query the server from the window successfully. There's no real issue or error experienced other than the fact that this error appears in the error log.
* Server collations are not all the same.
* The collation of the problematic server is Latin1_General_CI_AS.
* Default user options are the same.
* All databases are in the online state.

I am currently working on task where we use Central Management Server and Server Group for easy access to our SQL server boxes.
I am trying to query the extended properties for all databases on multiple SQL Servers as can be seen below:
> Is there a way that can be done using TSQL script?
I am using the code snippet from this social.msdn post that is pretty close to what I want to achieve, but my powershell skills are zero to none: Please find the script below :

$s = New-Object ('Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.Server') "computer\instance"
$dbs = $s.Databases
$query = @"
SELECT objtype,
objname,
name,
value
FROM fn_listextendedproperty(default, default, default, default, default, default, default);
"@
foreach($db in $dbs) {
$ds = $db.ExecuteWithResults($query)
$table = $ds.Tables;
foreach($row in $table) {
Write-Host $row.Item("objtype") `
$row.Item("objname") `
$row.Item("name") `
$row.Item("value");
}
}
To add to the complication I am using the above Powershell script within in Jenkins.

I'd like to provide a "directory" of all the different SQL Servers we have our different DEV, TEST, PROD environments by setting it up in Central Management Servers.
Another DBA said to be cautious of giving this to the group because there is an ability to inadvertently run a query on multiple servers IF they did a "New Query" on a group, instead of an individual server (and this would make sense why they call the feature Central Management Server).
Is there any way to provide this "directory" without having to worry about executing commands on multiple machines?

...but it doesn't work. It still queries the entire list of all the managed servers.

I like the idea of setting up a Central Management Server to run queries against other servers that I have to maintain. I'd like to be able to run one query to get information from all servers, like log sizes, backup history, index fragmentation, etc.
I'm just not sure how to set it up correctly so that I can also run these queries against the host database. It seems crazy that you can't manage your Central Management Server.
How do people get around this? Do you create a specialized instance whose sole purpose is acting as the management server? Or pick a server that you just don't care about the health?
I don't want to have to run one query for the single server, and a second for the groups. That seems to defeat the purpose.
Am I missing something?
**Update with solution copied from comment below**
Oh snap! I stand corrected.
My original attempt was to register the CNAME/Alias as the CMS, then register the server by name. This always failed.
Second attempt, registered the CMS using the server name. I then registered the server using the IP address and this worked. I don't have clue how they're different, but it works so I'm happy.

I've got to believe there's a reason for this, but for the life of me I cannot figure it out. It looks like ordering of Server Names within any Central Management Server is Case SENSITIVE, regardless the collation of the server acting as the CMS, itself.
Attached is an example of a CMS hosted on my local machine, which is configured with a server collation of SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS. CI meaning Case Insensitive. When selecting from the system table holding the CMS objects, the proper order is returned, however as you can see in this screenshot, the way the servers are listed in the UI, the order is obviously being treated in a Case Sensitive manner.
Since it doesn't seem to be server-level related, I assume it's client tools related, but there is no where within the tools that I can identify a collation level (or even case sensitivity setting) that would affect this.
Obviously there is nothing critical about this question, but if someone does know how to force the UI to be case insensitive, I'd appreciate it as I like to Camel Case my server names which is throwing off the ordering.

I need to run a set of Powershell commands from my Central Management Server onto all of the SQL Server Instances that it contains. Can someone let me know how this could be achieved?
I need to loop each server instance from the central management and calculate/get the free space. I am using SQL Server 2012. I need to try out the following things:
1. Search particular extension files on Server Instances
2. Check the space occupied by them
3. Check Free Space
4. Store the above info. in a file on the current system
I am simply aiming for getting the size of backup files (
.bak
files) only. I have a solution already where we query Invoke-Command
to find the files for us on remote machine. I wanted to know whether there exist a better solution to get the task done.

When you add a Server Instance to Central Management Servers or even your local instance of SSMS, if you click on the connection properties tab you can select the default database you'd like to connect to as well as network protocols connection and execution time-outs and even a custom color for the taskbar when you open a query to using the connection you're defining.
This allows you to shutdown SSMS on your machine and come back days/weeks/years later and connect to a previously connected server and have these connection properties already populated.
This information has to be stored in table in one of the four default databases, but I have been unable to locate any of this information. I'm particularly interested in the fields that define the custom color of the taskbar for a connection.
I'm working on re-organizing my company's CMS and would like to organize by tier/environment and color code each one differently.
So all
- production servers would be red,
- Beta/Stage would be Orange,
- QA would be green,
- Dev would be blue.
I have already crafted a query to insert each Server Instance from a table into CMS, but can't seem to figure out how to populate the default connection's color.
Any help is much appreciated.
