Does the Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter support Mini DisplayPort?

I would like to use the [Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter](https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MMEL2AM/A/thunderbolt-3-usb-c-to-thunderbolt-2-adapter) to connect a DisplayPort monitor to my USB-C Mac. Thunderbolt 2 and Mini DisplayPort use the same connector, so it seems like this should work. Will this adapter convert Mini DisplayPort monitor signals to USB-C / Thunderbolt 3? I'm specifically attempting to connect a non-Thunderbolt Apple Cinema Display to my Mac via Apple-branded adapters.
