I have a 2011, 15" MacBook Pro (running 10.6.8) with the defunct, AMD(?) graphics chip. I'm trying to connect to a 23" Apple Cinema Display using a brand-new Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter (LogiLink CV0037), **but it doesn't work.** I am aware that my laptop has a Thunderbolt port, not a Mini DisplayPort. However, everything I've read seems to indicate that a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter should work perfectly fine for what I'm trying to do, given Thunderbolt's 'backward compatibility'. The most likely culprit in my mind is that I've permanently disabled the faulty graphics chip by following these video instructions , which might be interacting with how my machine connects with the display. Is this likely correct? Is the AMD(?) chip required to run external displays? Are there any other obvious possibilities? Also, it's worth noting: Both the display and adapter do in fact work. I plugged the display into an older 17" MBP with a mini-DisplayPort with no problems. Also when I pull the adapter out of either the 15" or 17", the laptop screen goes blue for a few seconds, suggesting that the 15" MacBook Pro is also detecting something, just not integrating the display connection fully(?).

I have a MBP mid-2012 (pre-Retina) running Mojave or High Sierra. I use the latest version of SwitchResX to handle the external monitor rarer resolution of 1440x900, surely not too many pixels for the older Intel graphics chip. Video adapter is a Thunderbolt 1-to-VGA. Previously, I used a DisplayLink USB3-based video adapter to light the second monitor (legacy from a slightly older MBP with a burnt Thunderbolt chip) with few issues, except the ginormous CPU consumption that made it impossible to use said adapter for anything else than text or short animations, the single reason why I want to revert to the Thunderbolt adapter. USB3 was never made for streaming video data, no matter how good the compression and algorithms. **Problem:** Every time I try to connect the external monitor in Mojave, the OS freezes with a short delay. However, briefly before freezing, SwitchResX does acknowledge the external monitor presence, albeit at an extremely low resolution of 800x600. If external monitor is plugged in before boot, boot doesn't proceed. **Already tried:** - Same maneuver in High Sierra triggers the same behavior. - Resetting PRAM then SMC has no effect. - Disabling SIP has no effect (Off the top of my memory, since I cannot access local recovery partition for Mojave) - Connecting as a different user on either OS triggers same behavior - Last time I checked, booting in safe mode on either OS allows the external monitor to turn on. Of course, running in safe mode just to get a working external display isn't a viable solution. **Not tried:** Full OS reinstall. While it would be pretty radical, it is extremely time-consuming and may or may not yield results What could be happening here?

I have two external Samsung X5 2TB Thunderbolt 3 SSDs. Both of them work fine after I reformat them. But when I delete files (and empty the recycle bin), the space on them does not increase. In order to get space back, I need to empty it, reformat, then rebuild up files on it. So far I have tried the following: 1. Enabling TRIM. It's enabled, does nothing. 2. Showing hidden files/folders to make sure nothing is hiding on the drive. There's nothing there, trash on the volume is empty, etc. 3. I've tried running "First Aid" in Disk Utility. It runs fine and finishes but it doesn't fix the problem. What could be causing this? I am running MacOS Monterey on an M1 Max laptop. 1.37TB of data but only 31GB free on a 2TB disk File system thinks I am using 1.97TB TRIM is enabled

Currently I am using a Windows VM so that I can use PUTTY to SSH into a device that is connected through a USB port to my MAC. This works fine. However, I am unable to SSH into the device on MacOS through iterm2 - I suspect that it is because the network settings aren't what they are supposed to be. When I plug the device into my thunderbolt adapter on my Mac and run my Windows VM the device shows up perfectly fine and creates a new network in Windows: In Windows this happens However, on MacOS Thunderbolt bridge seems to be stuck on "inactive": (ignore the subnet mask mismatch, I have tried with 255.255.0.0 too) enter image description here Checking the MAC address of the Thunderbolt Bridge and looking at the settings in ifconfig: bridge0: flags=8863 mtu 1500 options=63 ether e2:74:33:e3:a6:c1 inet 192.168.2.1 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.2.255 inet6 fe80::14a7:af36:419d:645c%bridge0 prefixlen 64 secured scopeid 0xd Configuration: id 0:0:0:0:0:0 priority 0 hellotime 0 fwddelay 0 maxage 0 holdcnt 0 proto stp maxaddr 100 timeout 1200 root id 0:0:0:0:0:0 priority 0 ifcost 0 port 0 ipfilter disabled flags 0x0 member: en3 flags=3 ifmaxaddr 0 port 11 priority 0 path cost 0 member: en4 flags=3 ifmaxaddr 0 port 12 priority 0 path cost 0 member: en12 flags=3 ifmaxaddr 0 port 10 priority 0 path cost 0 member: en13 flags=3 ifmaxaddr 0 port 9 priority 0 path cost 0 nd6 options=201 media: status: inactive This is clearly a software issue as the port works fine in the Windows VM but for some reason networking seems to be far more complicated on Mac. How do I replicate the Windows behavior on MacOS? I want the wifi connected to the internet, and I want a separate LAN connection through the USB cable to my device so that I can ssh into it. The device is not connected to the internet. I'm interested in buying the new 5K retina 2022 [Apple Studio Display](https://www.apple.com/studio-display/) . However, I use a personal Mac and a work Mac at the same desk. Frequently switching cables between the two Macs whenever I want to use the display would be annoying. The Studio Display does not offer input switching, and only one of the USB-C / Thunderbolt ports on the back is capable of connecting to the host computer. How can I easily switch Macs connected to the Studio Display? Is there a [KVM switch](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KVM_switch) (Keyboard, Video, Mouse) switch capable of swapping between Macs connected to the Studio Display? I'm looking for something like the old VGA KVM switch below, but for USB-C, Thunderbolt, DisplayPort, or whatever else is needed for the new Apple Studio Display. The switch should ideally pass along the monitor's speakers and webcam, along with any peripherals connected to its USB-C ports. KVM switch I'm unable to find any Thunderbolt 3 or 4 KVM switches. Some USB-C KVM switches do seem to exist, but I'm unsure if this new Apple Studio Display works with them properly. Some state they do not work with Apple or Thunderbolt devices. The same question was asked for the older Apple Thunderbolt Display here: > https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/272543/how-to-switch-between-two-macs-and-one-thunderbolt-display

Second of all my 4K monitor doesn't even pop up in the display settings **or** turn on. When I unplug my 4K monitor HDMI from my dock and plug it in my Mac it works well, but the 2K monitor still has the black lines. My mouse and keyboard seem to work fine, but when I play around for a minute, I seem to be unable to click buttons on my screen (for example, the "About this Mac" top navigation buttons). When I remove the dock everything works fine again, when I plug it back in same thing happens. I came from a Windows 11 laptop where the dock works perfectly.

EDIT: Do not do this. This created a startup error that has now forced me to reinstall my OS from Internet Recovery. I'm one of a number of MacBook Pro users unfortunately plagued by a longstanding issue apparently related to faulty power chips on the motherboard of my 2015 Retina MacBook Pro (most notably documented [here](https://outluch.wixsite.com/rmbp-crash) as well as on a number of Macrumors threads and AD questions). It's my understanding that this issue affects the the 820-3662 and 820-3787 logic boards. For clarity's sake, I have methodically assessed and eliminated most other potential causes for the crashes, and when I initially diagnosed the problem, I went through all the typical steps including several fresh installs, EtreCheck, and an Apple hardware and software diagnostic (all unremarkable). This problem has been reliably solved in the past by disabling several Thunderbolt-related kernel extensions on the SSV (and reportedly as well by [this app](https://realmacmods.com/product/macbook-pro-nocrash-utility/) , though I haven't tried it myself), which I've been doing every time I update the OS. Probably against my better judgment, I updated to Big Sur, and after a bit of forum trawling (I am not a developer and much of this is over my head), my understanding is that Big Sur has, in the process of becoming more secure, made it much more difficult to write the SSV. On advice from several threads and blog posts, including the following: - https://eclecticlight.co/2020/06/25/big-surs-signed-system-volume-added-security-protection/ - http://disq.us/p/2ak4vda - https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/395508/mount-root-as-writable-in-big-sur I've done the following: 1. Boot into the Terminal in Recovery Mode (reboot holding Command-R and open Terminal under Utilities in the menu bar). 2. mount -uw /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD (on my Mac, I understand nomenclature can vary). 3. Navigate to the relevant folder with cd /Systems/Library/Extensions/ 4. Rename the relevant kernel extensions from the suffix .kext to .kext.BAK (disabling them) with mv AppleThunderboltNHI.kext AppleThunderboltNHI.kext.BAK, for example 5. Repeating the above with each of the relevant kernel extensions - many users have been able to get by with just disabling the above, others have had to disable nearly all thunderbolt-related kernel extensions. Fortunately I don't actually use these functions on my MacBook. The list that I used this time comes from [here](https://dean.codes/macbook-pro-retina-15-inch-mid-2014-thunderbolt-issue/) and includes: - AppleThunderboltDPAdapters.kext - AppleThunderboltIP.kext - AppleThunderboltPCIAdapters.kext - AppleThunderboltEDMService.kext - AppleThunderboltUTDM.kext - and finally, the above-mentioned AppleThunderboltNHI.kext 4. Disabled protections with csrutil authenticated-root disable 5. "Blessed" the changes I've made in the snapshot I've been working with with sudo bless --folder /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/System/Library/CoreServices --bootefi --create-snapshot 6. Rebooted into normal mode. Thus far, seems like it's working (I've had no crashes) but I'll need to use the laptop for a week or so to tell - the crashes are fairly unpredictable. I've posted this for two purposes: 1. I hope that if this works, it's a useful resource for others that are less savvy, like myself. 2. As mentioned, this is well above my head and I'm hoping someone can check my work and make sure I haven't done anything completely egregious. For example, do I need to re-enable the systems protections that I've disabled, or does that happen automatically when I reboot into normal mode? Thank you so much for your time, I really appreciate this community.

I have my Macbook Pro (MacOS Mojave) connecting to an NFS share on a Linux machine directly connected via Thunderbolt with jumbo frames. Testing with iperf3, I can do ~14 Gbps (~1.8 GBps) over the connection, so I expect that network is not the bottleneck. Here is the /etc/exports:
/srv/share         169.254.0.*(rw,sync,insecure,rw,all_squash,anonuid=1000,anongid=1000,no_subtree_check)
Doing some simple testing with dd, here is what I see: ### Direct to disk on the server (~800MB/s)
~$ dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp/testfile bs=5120 count=100000
100000+0 records in
100000+0 records out
512000000 bytes (512 MB, 488 MiB) copied, 0.62477 s, 820 MB/s
### NFS from the server (~660 MB/s) I connected a client on the server to see how it performed with a Linux client and taking the network out of the equation.
$ sudo mount -t nfs -o rw 169.254.0.1:/srv/share /tmp/share
$ nfsstat -m
/tmp/share from 169.254.0.1:/srv/share
 Flags:	rw,relatime,vers=4.2,rsize=1048576,wsize=1048576,namlen=255,hard,proto=tcp,timeo=600,retrans=2,sec=sys,clientaddr=169.254.0.1,local_lock=none,addr=169.254.0.1
$ dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp/share/test_file bs=5120 count=100000
100000+0 records in
100000+0 records out
512000000 bytes (512 MB, 488 MiB) copied, 0.76516 s, 669 MB/s
### From Macbook Pro over Thunderbolt (~150MBps) I tried to match the default NFS client connection from Linux, but the Mac client doesn't support the same options. I've tried vers=3 and even async, but am never able to get it much faster than this.
$ sudo mount -t nfs -o rw,vers=4,rsize=1048576,wsize=1048576,hard,proto=tcp,timeo=600,retrans=2,sec=sys 169.254.0.1:/srv/share /srv/share
$ nfsstat -m
/srv/share from 169.254.0.1:/srv/share
  -- Original mount options:
     General mount flags: 0x0
     NFS parameters: vers=4,proto=tcp,hard,rsize=1048576,wsize=1048576,timeo=600,retrans=2,sec=sys
     File system locations:
       /srv/share @ 169.254.0.1 (169.254.0.1)
  -- Current mount parameters:
     General mount flags: 0x4000000 multilabel
     NFS parameters: vers=4.0,proto=tcp,port=2049,hard,nointr,noresvport,callback,negnamecache,nonamedattr,noacl,noaclonly,locks,noquota,rsize=65536,wsize=65536,readahead=16,dsize=32768,nordirplus,nodumbtimr,timeo=600,maxgroups=16,acregmin=5,acregmax=60,acdirmin=5,acdirmax=60,nomutejukebox,noephemeral,nonfc,sec=sys
     File system locations:
       /srv/share @ 169.254.0.1 (169.254.0.1)
     Status flags: 0x0
$ dd if=/dev/zero of=/srv/share/testfile bs=5120 count=10000
10000+0 records in
10000+0 records out
51200000 bytes transferred in 0.337533 secs (151688873 bytes/sec)
--- Given how fast the network is, it seems like I should be able to get 3-4x the speeds I'm seeing from the Mac. How can I improve the performance?

I have a Mac Studio connected to my Apple Studio Display and would like to also connect my Lenovo Legion (17ACH6H w/USB-C 3.2 Gen 2) laptop to the same monitor. I’ve tried using both a USB-C and a Thunderbolt cable, but the Studio Display doesn’t seem to detect the laptop. Is there a specific cable or adapter required to make this work? If anyone has experience with a similar setup, I’d really appreciate a step-by-step (nothing crazy), including the right cables and any necessary settings to enable this connection. Additionally, I have a couple of questions: 1. Is it possible to have both my Mac and PC connected simultaneously, allowing for quick switching between them? Perhaps as separate desktops? 2. Would a KVM switch be a viable solution for this setup? Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
