I installed drobo dashboard, i said 'remind me' when it asked if i wanted to format these drives 4. they did not mount indepenedntly 5. i removed them and now they all apeare as 'unininitialised' on when i attach them via a SATA-USB 3,0 cable to my mac studio! wich is a big worry I did not choose any fromat options, or ask it to format anything, and the drives do not mount through drobo app iether, or apear to be formated or seup by drobo. I feel very foolish, but i did nothing but put the drives in and launch the app, and say - do not format these drives. have i ereased the adress protion somehow? Q. how can i verify the 'uninitialised' status on the M1 studio, to see if the data is still present??? tahnks for any pointers in advance.

I would like to continue to use my DROBO 5D with the the mac mini 16 GB (M1, 2020) mcOS Monterey. But it does not pop up on my display, although the older DROBO “4slots” does show up on the screen. Both are showing up AND work well on my older macBook Pro with the Drobo-Dashboard ( 3.5.2 ), so all data are still available. But neither of the 2 DROBO’s appears on M1 mac-mini on the Drobo-Dashboard ( 3.6.1 ) Instead this warning sign appears, saying: “Drobo system extension has been blocked by macOS. Please dot to “System Preferences >> Security & Privacy >> General” pane and allow the extension to be loaded.” Only the older DROBO “4slots” pops up on the screen after a while. When I am running the Disk utility program also only the older DROBO appears. When I am doing what is asked in the warning another message appears: “To enable system extensions, you need to modify your security settings in the Recovery environment. To do this, shut down your system and hold the Touch ID or power button to launch Startup Security Utility. In Startup Security Utility, enable kernel extensions from the Security Policy button” If I do so, I am ending up with a message saying: “Recovery is trying to change system settings. NO ADMINISTRATOR WAS FOUND” Now what ? Thanx for any hints

I have dabbled with Applescript in the past, but only in a small way, so need help this time please. I am not even sure this is possible... I have a small server cabinet with 3x Drobo, two Mac Minis and assorted 2.5" HD cases. One Drobo, at the top, is getting too hot (fans on full all day) since I installed 5x 10tb HDs. This is my backup Drobo and I use Retrospect as backup software. Retrospect runs every morning and I can set it to quit when the last backup task has completed. I would like to create a script that will activate when it sees Retrospect has quit. I would like the script to then shut down the Drobo. This is different to unmounting which would leave the Drobo powered up. Is this possible and can anyone help with such a script please? Thanks, Tom

Using macOS Music (formerly iTunes), I have a library with database files stored on the local drive and some media files stored on a Drobo 5N NAS device. In macOS Catalina, any attempt to modify the metadata of certain files will cause the Music app to freeze. I have to force quit. Sometimes, the Music app won't start up again and I have to restart the machine. This seems to affect the following file types: - mp3 - itlp (iTunes LP) m4a files work fine. (I haven't comprehensively tested the file types supported by Music. Maybe there are others that trigger a freeze.) A freeze also happens if I attempt to add one of these file types, my media folder is on the NAS, and I have the "copy files to Music Media folder" setting checked. The file size or metadata content does not seem to matter. Files stored in the local hard disk do not have any issues. Playback of the files works fine. Tested using multiple fresh Music libraries under multiple users on the same machine (a 2017 iMac), got the same result. Tested on another machine (a 2017 MacBook), and had no issue (!). [Edit: found the difference between these machines. The MacBook was running 10.15.1, but the iMac was running 10.15.2. Updated the MacBook, now it can reproduce the error. So this is a regression introduced by 10.15.2.] I recall having similar issues prior to Catalina, but on the other hand at some point I was able to make metadata changes without issue. The Drobo is out of warranty and since June 2017 Drobo doesn't provide any community support so I haven't been able to figure out if the issue originates with the device. Aside from power cycling (which isn't the cause in my case) what might cause a USB drive to disconnect ?

Is there any way to force my Macs (they are all running High Sierra) to NEVER mount network volumes via AFP? There is no way in the Drobo administration to disable AFP. I've talked Drobo Support: it's a "feature we're considering." To be clear: I understand how to mount it via SMB. There are certain situations (that I seem to be unable to control) where the macs sometimes automount via AFP. I think it might have to do with remembered "open recent" files -- but I'm guessing. So I want to break/disable AFP entirely. I'll take a failure to mount, instead of the problems I get when it automounts with AFP. (files don't save, apps and the finder lock up, etc)

The server is mostly idle, and is used as a Time Machine server for 2 users. I have two Drobo Gen 2 external drives attached via daisy-chain Firewire 800 port. The Drobo I tested with has 4 X 7,200 RPM Seagate drives (ST2000DM001). I ran DiskMark from the App Store and the results were consistent with Blackmagic Disk Speed Test: > Sequential Read (MB/s): 10 > > Sequential Write (MB/s): 9.2 > > Random Read (MB/s): 0.3 > > Random Write (MB/s): 1.0 Do these numbers seem low? What steps could I take to improve the drive's IO performance? FYI, the same tool used to measure the performance of the internal SSD drive clocks around 450 MB/s both Read and Write.

my situation is kind of weird. I've totally crashed my system yesterday after installing bootcamp/windows 8.1 (bad partition format). Fortunately, I have a full backup Time Machine on a Drobo 5D (firewired). Since Drobo 5D need specific drivers to read data, I could not reinstalling the OS from Time Machine Backup. So I have reinstalled a fresh OSX El Capitan from scratch. After created the user and installing drobo drivers, I have bound the Drobo 5d Time Machine backup Disk to the Time Machine OSX service. I've done this because I though it was the way to do it... Error! When I went to restore, I have not seen my old data but just the new installation. When I go to directly within Drobo Backuped Disk, I see All Past Folders AND new Folders. I've tried to restore the backup user with migration tool App but no success, the same user as the fresh install, not the old one (with all my apps). Now I think I've corrupted my backup. Is there a way to rollback this issue?

**Summary** I want to restore any of the OS and data files my Mac OS X computers to any previous state I "save" (aka "backup"), so I can revert back to a known-working software state when a change causes a problem (like a problematic OS or application-software upgrade). I want to do this without Internet-bandwidth limitations (hence the Drobo is preferred, over a cloud-only-based backup). **Implementation Challenges** What solutions can solve limitations #1 and #2 (listed below) for the following scenario, and still meet the requirements served by CCC + Drobo ? I prefer to keep the Drobo, but I expect to replace and/or augment CCC with something else/additional. However, I'll evaluate any solution, no matter how big the change. (Within reason. I have to stick with Mac OS X, for now.) **More Details** I currently employ Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) to copy my entire MacBook Air (it's primary 'Mac HD' drive) historically running 10.9.5 and 10.10.5 to a Drobo Mini . I can restore my entire 'Mac HD' drive, including the OS, to the state saved on my Drobo backup by booting off a USB flash thumbdrive, then running a CCC restore from the Drobo -> Mac HD. This is my _only_ reliably means I know to reset my OS/apps/data/etc back to a known working state, especially after a 'Software Update' screws something up. This happens most often when I update to a new Mac OS X, decide its newly-introduced bugs are not worth it, and then I downgrade. (Happened with Mavericks and Yosemite. I suspect it will happen with El Capitan--when I first try it.) I then wait for the new Mac OS X to become mature enough for me to upgrade to it, or I'm simply forced to upgrade for whatever reason (like app support phases out for the older OS X version). **Limitations**. The above works well, but there's 2 limitations I'd like to overcome: 1. OS X's FileVault can not encrypt my Drobo , given its thin provisioning . Thus my files on the Drobo are exposed "in the open" if some untrusted person/entity acquires/steals my Drobo. 2. Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) can not automatically or at least not easily restore (in the above scenario) to a backup state/time prior to the latest backup. **Time Machine**. It is *not* a viable solution. I've tested it numerous times in scenario similar to above, and it has failed (miserably and obviously) every time. **CrashPlan**. I've spoken with 3 different pre-sales tech representatives at CrashPlan/Code42. None of them claim to solve the above, even though I suspect they can do it as well as CCC does it today, with the aforementioned limitations, of course. **TrueCrypt**. Ultimately, I suspect I'll need an backup-application-level and/or TrueCrypt-based encryption to solve this. But I'm open to anything that meets all the requirements.

I bought an Apple Time Machine. I have a home studio with several hard drives. I'm trying to find the best way to setup Time Machine to keep all my storage backed up all the time. Studio Computer (12 Core Mac Pro) - 250 GB - Internal SSD System Drive - 2 TB - Internal Media Drive (Audio Samples, Sample Instrument Files) - 2 TB - Internal Storage 1 (Recording Sessions) - 2 TB - Internal Storage 2 (Recording Sessions) - (Note: Internal Storage 1 & 2 are used until full and then they are stored away and new drives are purchased to replace them) MacBook Pro (13″ i7) - 250 GB - Internal SSD (OS X files and software only) - 1 TB - Internal Media (Audio Samples, Instruments, User Folder, Etc.) Questions: - What kind of setup do I need to back all of this up? - Do I need a big USB hub with a hard drive connected that mirrors every drive in my system? - Do those drives need to be larger than each of the primary drives? - Should I get a Drobo or some kind of RAID drive?

I have been using Windows 2008 in Parallels on my Mac Server to serve up files to my Windows clients on the network with a USB attached Drobo (NTFS). Now I want to move these files to my Mac Drobo (Mac OS Ext) and maintain as many file attributes as possible, such as date created and modified. Recently I learned how to copy large amounts of data using rsync on my Mac . I assume permissions will not translate, but can I use the same command to copy the data from a NTFS formatted Drobo to the Mac OS Extended Drobo and maintain file attributes/metadata? Here's the commend I used before : sudo rsync -va --progress /Volumes/SourceName /Volumes/DestinationName Thank you.

External drive mounts but doesn't appear in Finder anymore

I have an external hard drive (Drobo 2nd gen) connected to my Mac via Firewire. It used to appear on my desktop and in my Finder sidebar, but now it won't show up in either place (I do have "Hard disks" and "External disks" turned on in the Finder sidebar options). The drive *does* seem to be mounting fine: the drive and partition are visible in Disk Utility and I can browse to it in Finder if I use the Finder's "Go to Folder..." command and type /Volumes/Drobo/. I can read/write to it fine once I've navigated to it. I have the latest version of Drobo's Dashboard utility installed, and my firmware is up to date. Any ideas? Is this a sign that my external drive is starting to die? **EDIT:** I've resolved this problem with the help of Drobo's tech support. See my own accepted answer below. I've revised this answer to make it less Drobo-specific, since it ended up being a filesystem thing.

I have a Drobo connected to my Mac. It has been used for storing large video files, keepsakes and other miscellaneous data. I also use it as a Time Machine backup drive. Today, I went to look for some files and everything but my Time Machine backups are gone. I am at a complete loss and don't know what to do. I know I should have backed-up my Drobo to another disk, but didn't have a disk big enough. Does anyone know what could have caused this and if there is anything I can do to figure out what was deleted or even recover the data? Thank you. [EDIT] I have noticed that files added to the Drobo just a day or two ago are also partially missing. I believe I have a corrupt volume. I am running DiskWarrior to verify the disk.

Does daisy chaining FireWire 800 and 400 cause all devices to use 400 speeds?

I recently purchased a Drobo, and in looking over some online documentation, I encountered [this support article](http://support.drobo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/232/~/firewire-performance-and-stability%3A-mac) which states: > If a FireWire 400 device is also connected, it will pull down the overall performance to match FireWire 400 (FW400) instead of FireWire 800 speeds. I realize that if I attached a FireWire 800 device to a 400 device, and then that 400 device to my computer that obviously I'd only see 400 speeds from the 800 device, but this KB article seems to imply that connecting a 400 device to the other FW port on my Drobo, and having my Drobo connected via 800 to my Mac, will cause the Drobo to communicate at 400 speeds. Is this true? Is this a limitation of the FireWire protocol, a practical limitation common to many implementations of FireWire, or a limitation specific to the Drobo itself?

I have a folder on my Drobo called "HFS+ Private Directory Data" and it contains old Time Machine data. I cannot delete it and do not want to reformat my drobo. I have tried 'option' trashing and various Terminal hacks but to no avail. I am using Lion now. It's about 36 GB and I would love this space back. I'm running Lion on a 2006 MacPro and it's a four bay Drobo with 3 TB of 4 TB used. I use the Drobo for image files and a separate drive for Time Machine. Any ideas?
