Can an eMac boot from a USB optical drive connected via a FireWire adapter?

I've got an eMac that's mostly working (running Tiger, plus a selection of other nice software), but has a broken optical drive. I have a spare USB optical drive lying around, and it works for most purposes, but, according to [this discussion](https://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=1182251) on the Ars Technica OpenForum, most PowerPC Macs (including eMacs) can't boot from USB drives (at least not out of the box and without a LOT of tinkering and swearing), although they _can_ boot from FireWire drives.
Just in case I ever have to reinstall Mac OS X on the eMac, here's my question: if I plug a USB-to-FireWire adapter into one of the eMac's FireWire ports, and plug the USB optical drive into that, will the eMac be able to boot from said optical drive, or will I have to shell out for a FireWire optical drive?

I am running macOS 10.13.6 on a Mac Mini 2011 and I decided to get Windows 8 using Boot Camp. The installation went well, but I can't switch back to macOS (I got advice and managed to fix it, but when I loaded macOS I figured out I made a mistake and Windows was broken. So, I installed Windows 8 again and it worked, but once again macOS broke.)
The problem is that I have a 500GB Iomega Firewire drive which was storing just a few photos. On Windows, it just shows 500GB of unpartitioned space.
I really need those photos, how can I read them?

I'm attempting to use a 2003-era external Apple iSight Camera with an M1 Mac mini via adapters:
> iSight > FireWire 400 > FireWire 800 > Thunderbolt 2 > Thunderbolt 3
This same adapter chain works for **video** on a 2019 Intel MacBook Pro running macOS 10.15.6 Catalina. **Audio** required an [additional fix](https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/392436/external-isight-camera-microphone-not-working) , but is now also working on Intel.
On a new Apple Silicon M1 Mac mini, the video webcam does not seem to work. When first plugged in, it makes an autofocus sound and the green light turns on briefly.
Photo Booth is black and says:
> There is no connected camera.
The FireWire Bus device is recognized by the M1 Mac's System Information:
Are there known FireWire support issues for either M1, M2, M3, M4 Macs or macOS 11 Big Sur?
How can I use this iSight video webcam with my Apple Silicon Mac?

I am using a mid-2010 Mac Pro with the latest Monterey 12.6 using OpenCore. Everything works perfectly except for some Firewire audio mixer I am trying to use (Mackie Onyx 1640i).
I am connecting it to my Mac Pro using a FW400 → FW800 Belkin cable. At first, it worked well, as this mixer driver is embedded in CoreAudio. After rebooting once, this "good luck" ended, and every time I am switching to use it, I get a kernel panic, and my Mac reboots. It happens both when I try to switch my DAW (Logic Pro) to use it, but also when selecting it as the sound source in macOS.
I tried installing Big Sur on another disk and the same issue occurred.
Here is the kernel panic log:

My Sony camcorder is not on the list of camcorders supported by iMovie. Is there another software I could use to capture my videos?

I'm attempting to use legacy FireWire hardware peripherals in macOS 11 Big Sur.
Apple has provided an OEM hardware dongle connectivity path that is confirmed working in macOS Catalina:
1. [Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter](https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MD464LL/A/apple-thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapter)
2. [Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter
](https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MMEL2AM/A/thunderbolt-3-usb-c-to-thunderbolt-2-adapter)
Unfortunately, the one piece of FireWire hardware that I'm trying to use [does not appear to work](https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/412516/external-isight-camera-with-m1-mac) in Big Sur (on an M1 Mac).
Various threads online seem to indicate that FireWire products are either not supported in Big Sur or have various incompatibility issues.
- [Oh, Firewire UA products are incompatible with Big Sur!!](https://uadforum.com/macos-11-big-sur-mac-m1-sub-forum/51675-oh-firewire-ua-products-incompatible-big-sur.html)
To confirm: was FireWire support dropped in Big Sur, on Intel and/or Apple Silicon?
Was there an Apple announcement of this change?
Do any of your FireWire peripherals work in Big Sur? Has anyone tested a FireWire device and found it to work correctly?

Are there any specifics for a Thunderbolt enclosure that I'd need to pay attention to, or would I generally be better advised to get one of those Thunderbolt to Firewire adaptors ?

I'm using a 2003-era external iSight "Autofocus Video Camera + Noise Suppression Microphone" with an Apple Cinema Display and USB-C MacBook Pro running macOS 10.15.
It's connected via a long succession of dongles:
>iSight > FireWire 400 > Apple Cinema Display > FireWire 800 > Thunderbolt 2 > Thunderbolt 3
It still works great for video, if a bit low resolution, and you can't beat the design:
However, the iSight camera's **microphone** does not appear to be working. People cannot hear me when my laptop is in clamshell mode, despite being on video via the external iSight.
In
System Information shows a FireWire iSight device, as well as an "Unknown Device". When I unplug the FireWire cable/dongle, both devices disappear.
This iSight is running the 1.0.2 firmware; I'll try to update it with 1.0.3 and test:
Why isn't the iSight mic working? How can I use an external iSight as an audio/video webcam in modern versions of macOS?

I would like to transfer old Hi8 tapes onto my new MacBook using FireWire. I have an old Digital Sony Handycam and all of the required adapters to connect it to my MacBook USB-C ports. I tried importing a tape into iMovie 10 and while it did actually import the portion of the tape I played, the import screen on iMovie 10 had message "No Data Device Detected" the entire time and the audio could have been better. After doing some research it appears that maybe iMovie 10 is not 100% compatible with these old cameras but that iMovie '09 should still be.
So, I would like to download iMovie '09 onto my MacBook in addition to iMovie '10 that I already have. In other words, I would like to have 2 different versions of iMovie on my MacBook so I can use the '09 version to import old Hi8 tapes and the '10 version for anything in the future.
Is this possible? I did try to download '09 off the Apple site but after downloading it told me that I had downloaded an update and I already had the newer version so that bright idea didn't work. I am not a coder so if there is a way to do this without making changes in Terminal mode that would be my preference.
TIA!

The Mac Mini (Late 2012) has a FireWire 800 port on the back.

How much power can this FireWire port output? I was only able to find the data speed (800 Mbit/s) on Apple's tech specs page for this Mac mini, but wasn't able to find any information elsewhere.
For reference, the (now discontinued) 13 port Thunderbolt 3 docking station from OWC contained a FireWire 800 port that could output [7 watts of energy](https://www.lifewire.com/mac-usb-c-to-old-peripherals-4122273) .

I'm trying to figure out how to use my old iMac as an external monitor for a windows laptop. I've read that it's impossible since its Mini DisplayPort doesn't accept input, but it seems like there's a possibility that nobody has considered. Firewire 800 seems to be capable of carrying video signals, and the machine has one of these ports. Is it possible to turn this old machine into a monitor using this port, or is there a good reason why no one has suggested this?

Target Disc Mode from 2009 Mac mini to 2019 iMac
I need to transfer some large files from an Early 2009 Mac mini to a 2019 iMac. The Mac mini has FireWire 800, Ethernet, and USB-1. The iMac has USB-C and USB-3 and Ethernet. Is this the best way to do it? Is this string of dongles likely to work? Would you risk using Migration Assistant for this, o...

I've been using this mixer via a firewire --> thunderbolt adaptor. Now I'm looking to add a monitor connected via HDMI to this setup.
Can I daisy-chain a monitor via the mixer by using a second firewire --> thunderbolt adapter combined with a thunderbolt --> HDMI adapter?
How would I go about figuring out the maximum supported resolution in this setup?

Would be fantastic if someone has experience with this and could give me a hint!
Cheers!
Edit: I've now also tried the tutorial here: https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/225387/no-bootable-device-usb-2-0-macbook-pro-mid-2014/225521#
I've adapted the Disk and partition IDs to match my system. Same result, after reboot of the mac the external hard drive is recognized as windows partition, but remains not bootable.

I'm completing an audio recording setup.
Equipment:
- Macbook 13" Retina late 2012 with Two Thunderbolt ports
- One Focusrite Saffire audio interface (Firewire 400)
- One OWC Mercury external SSD drive (Firewire 800)
- I already own One Thunderbolt/Firewire adapter
Question: what is the optimal setup for these devices? Specifically, will I get full Firewire 800 speeds if I purchase a second Thunderbolt/Firewire adapter and run the external FW800 drive alone on that port?
I gather from reading other threads that, if I am to use only the one adapter, I would place the FW800 drive first in the chain, and the FW400 audio input last. However, it also appears that, if the FW400 device "talks a lot," it can still slow down the speed of the FW800 device. So, the question is whether that same behavior might happen even if the devices were each on its own adapter through separate Thunderbolt ports?
One might presume both devices would operate at optimum speed if on separate ports, but perhaps the internal architecture of the Macbook still handles them as if on one port?
Thanks.
