I’m looking at some video files (captured from various iOS and Android devices) using Finder’s Inspector. In the “more info” section, it lists Dimensions, Codecs, and Duration… but there’s also a “Color profile” which I don’t understand. For image files, this would be something like sRGB, but for video files, it just displays cryptic numbers. Depending on the file, it either displays as “HD (1-1-1)” or “(5-1-5)”. So my questions are:
* Is there a webpage somewhere that explains what the numbers mean for these video color profiles?
* Does one set of numbers indicate a higher-quality video (à la chroma subsampling)?

In the past it was possible for me to view my own foreign language-study videos on my phone, by importing them into iTunes. But with the change of iTunes to the TV app, that no longer seems to be possible. Instead, Apple suggests storing them in Photos.
But upon playback on the iPhone, Apple turns on background music of its own choosing, which drowns out the sound of the videos I am trying to learn from. Very silly design choice.
- **Question 1**: Is there any way to turn off the background music permanently? Apple agents don't seem to know of one, but perhaps the community here has an idea. (There have been user complaints about it on Apple's Support site, going back to 2021.)
- **Question 2**: Another idea would be to upload an MP3 containing only silence, to be used as "background" music. But it appears there is no way to select any background music other than the few that Apple has chosen for this purpose. Any thoughts?

I've had a search around the App Store but not had much success so far.
I'm looking for a video player that can play local video files to help me review incidents looking at in-car footage downloaded from the competitors in-car systems (mostly mp4).
I need to be able to play forward and reverse, at speeds from from frame-by-frame to 2x (ideally controlled via intuitive on screen controls or a jog dial).
I suspect my answer is going to be a NLE (eg LumaFusion) but was hoping for something lighter touch

After uploading a video from iPhone Photos to OneDrive I noticed the vibrancy of the video had substantially changed (e.g. greens were substantially less green, blues less blue).
While I would expect a change when viewed on a different device eg PC via Windows, I would not expect a change when viewing the same content on the same iPhone device via the OneDrive app.
Why is this happening?
Background:
For those who might wonder why I'm doing this, it is because the content is rarely accessed and I want to free up some iCloud space.
OK, I think I've got a major part of the explanation.
My original upload was done without setting Options>"All Photos Data" before sharing.
I have checked with [MediaInfo](https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo/Download) .
When exported with "All Photos Data" set, it seems to have been converted to:
- AVC instead of using HVC1 codec
- Has dropped Dolby Vision
- Has dropped from 10bits to 8bits bit depth
It looks much closer to the original now, however, it still looks a bit lower brightness when opened in OneDrive.
On my Windows machine, it looks much closer to the original also, but I realise I have sacrificed efficiency and some bit depth of the original.

I am recording cello practicing tutorials for my students, using (for now) just an iPhone XS and recording at 1080p to get started and to avoid melting the device during summer (it's already struggling quite a bit).
Upon checking the recordings, I have noticed that, while the cello is clear and prominent, my voice sounds quite muffled and in the background. Some non-comprehensive research taught me that, while the iPhone's mic is omnidirectional, it prioritises closer sources and my voice originates about 30-40cm behind the cello.
To work around this, I have used Detach Audio in Final Cut Pro 11 to separate audio from a video. Then, I exported the video as audio only (side question: is there another way to export only the audio from FCP?), resulting in an 85 MB AIFF audio file. After that, I opened the AIFF file in Logic Pro 11 and used the Split Stem feature to separate vocals from instruments, used the Gain Tool to increase the volume of the voice and exported the two tracks separately (about 80-90 MB each, all expected). I did not add any effect, these are videos through which I also plan to learn the craft, so no need to overdo it.
The resulting Logic project is 590 MB big! Is this normal? Should I uncheck certain options in the saving process? Is there anything I can do to improve this? Perhaps some mistake in my workflow?
Thank you very much!

Suddenly, all (that I have tried) stored videos in the Photos app play with complete black screen.
Also in the Camera app, the video (whether recording or not) is all black. But only in video mode. When switching to photo mode, the live image appears and I can take photos. When recording a video, it detects faces and shows the yellow rectangle where they would appear.
PS: when this happened, I had the

I have a Mac mini which has no display which I connect to it by sharing the screen to my laptop. The Mac mini runs apps which controls my live show's backing tracks, lights and video. The video projector is connected to the mini via HDMI.
I would like the mini to still use the Built-in display as the primary, and the projector act like a second display so it can be used for the videos, but allow me to still see the Mini desktop and other apps via the screen share. However, when the projector is connected, the Mac automatically selects it as the primary display, and Built-in Display is gone.
Is there a way around this?

Is there a way, on recent MacOS, to deny to the user the possibility of playing the videos in the Videos page of the google search (also in the first page, which in italian is called "Tutti", as in the picture)? I searched a bit and found nothing about this problem.
(Edit, thanks for comments) The practical problem is the following: in order to be more productive, I'd like to deny myself all distractions, and temptations; Yt is of course one of them. One can obviously block in many ways the YouTube site itself, but this block can easily be tricked by watching videos directly on the search engine (google, in my case, on safari browser - as shown in the picture), literally pressing the play button in the preview, both in the section "Tutti" or in the section "Videos" (also "Shorts", which is "Video brevi" in the pic). As far as I know, there is no way these modality of watching videos can benefit blocked by Screentime, neither by any of the softwares thet I know (such that Cisdem, or AppsBlock,...).

What is this "unknown error (-50)" that is preventing my MP4's from being opened? How can I get more details about the error so that I know how to fix it?

Videos I watch play back at massively increased speed when my Mac is connected to this particular external monitor.
Series played on HBO Max, for example, progress at about a 30x rate, meaning I see mostly individual frames and buffering animations (which, oddly, play at normal speed) -- it looks like videos are basically stuck in fast-forward.
Video playback is sped up across multiple browsers (Chrome, Safari), and playback of local files appears to be affected as well (the first I play a local file, it just skips to the end immediately, the second time seems fine). The issue with the playback speed of streaming video is reproducible on two entirely separate Macbooks when I connect them to this monitor, an LG 29KW600.
Unplugging the external monitor, which is connected via HDMI through a USB-C hub, instantly resolves the issue. Videos then play back at normal speed on the laptop's screen.
I've tried killing coreaudiod in an attempt to resolve this issue, without success.
Any insights as to what might cause this external monitor to affect video playback speed would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I find quicktime player to be very useful for scrubbing through videos, since it does so smoothly and with the touchpad scroll gesture. I am, however, deeply confused by its timecode output and I'd love an explanation if anyone has one. When cycling through the various time displays in the control bar, there's one that looks like this:
As I interpret this, or as I *want* to interpret it, it's showing the time of day at which the video starts and ends (presumably relative to its creation time), followed by the frame count. The problem is, these times don't match any dates I can find related to the video file.
Using the video whose control bar I screenshotted above, the file (let's call it

NINJVP_S140_S001_T002.MOV
) has the following dates associated with it.
system dates:
$ stat -f 'accessed: %Sa%nmodified: %Sm%nchanged: %Sc%nbirth: %SB' -t '%F %T' NINJVP_S140_S001_T002.MOV
accessed: 2025-05-29 20:34:42
modified: 2025-05-19 11:20:34
changed: 2025-05-19 11:20:34
birth: 2025-05-19 11:10:16
dates from the exif data:
$ exiftool -'*Date*' NINJVP_S140_S001_T002.MOV | grep -v '^File'
Create Date : 2025:05:19 10:10:16
Modify Date : 2025:05:19 10:10:16
Track Create Date : 2025:05:19 10:10:16
Track Modify Date : 2025:05:19 10:10:16
Media Create Date : 2025:05:19 10:10:16
Media Modify Date : 2025:05:19 10:10:16
Neither the file dates nor the exif dates match the timecode in QT player. I feel confident that it's not a timezone thing (because of the seconds difference, if nothing else). Nor is it showing the current time, since it shows 12:33:28;24 no matter what.
Can anyone tell me what this timecode actually is and where that information is coming from? And further, if there's a way to get QT player to either use the proper times from the exif metadata or to use touch
to change the file dates so it shows what I want? Do quicktime files have special proprietary metadata in addition to the exif? And if so, why would that date be different from the exif date?

My MacBook Pro 2016 with Touch Bar keeps having a kernel panic whenever I attempt to use a specific video file I recorded with my Atomos Shogun Flame. FCPX imports and uses all of the other files from the same shoot fine. However, if I try to play, create a proxy, or do anything that involves handling this file after import, my computer reboots.
So far I've attempted to re-encode the file using Adobe Media Encoder, but FCPX still has issues with it. I've tried importing the file into Adobe Premiere but the system still crashes (i.e. it freezes, turns off, then reboots). If I put my SSD back in the Atomos Shogun, and watch the entire file, it plays perfectly fine.
I've also attempted transferring the file from the SSD to my internal drive, as well as to my RAID prior to importing it, but that causes the same issue.
**Is there a tool that I can use to fix this file so my computer won't crash while using it? Or is there something else I can try to get around this issue?**
The Shogun Flame has limited file management capabilities, so I am unable to do anything on that end. I haven't purchased Apple Compressor, so Adobe Media Encoder is the primary tool I have to convert files.

The simplest way I can think of is by trimming the video with ffmpeg or QuickTime Player, but that would become quite cumbersome with multiple parts of the video. There's also an online service called Looptube which does that that I've been using (for YouTube videos), but it's quite buggy and doesn't work at all half the time, so I've given up using it.

Let's start by assuming that I have a perfectly compatible file. (In my use case, I was literally trying to get a video I took on my iPhone, that lives in my iPhone photos/video gallery, onto my iPad, so this isn't about conversions or codecs.)
Now, there are many ways to transfer and *watch* the the video, but I can't find a single darn way to save it with my other videos and photos:
- If it's short, or I'm willing to clip it, I can **email it to myself**, but unlike photos, *clicking on a video enclosure doesn't allow you to save it to the native app.* You can open it in vlc, good reader, etc.
- If it's under 180MB, I can **upload it to Dropbox** from the source device (iPhone for me) and then access or watch it on the destination device (iPad for me). *But I can't save it to photos from Dropbox on the iPad*
Why do I care, if I can access it and even watch it as described above? Two reasons:
1. I like having things organized in one place. I don't want to have to remember which vids are in Photos, vs. Dropbox, vs. Good reader, etc.
2. Most apps that use video (including Apple's own iMovie, for frack's sake) can only open and access movies located in the photos app.
Please tell me I'm missing something elegant, if not obvious?

I've been using/learning iMovie in order to create online classes for my students because of COVID19. Everything has been working fine until this morning.
iMovie just won't export a file.
I've created and exported about 30 videos thus far and I understand the basics. But now, when I select all the clips in a project and select the "Share - File..." option and hit "OK", nothing happens. No error messages, nothing. The little pie-chart progress indicator flashes for a fraction of a second before disappearing for good. The application doesn't bug or freeze (as I can keep working on the video or move to other projects), it just doesn't export the file.
I also can't export any of the videos it previously exported in the last few days and weeks. Nor will it export and brand new video.
I tried deleting the preferences: didn't solve anything.
I'm on 10.13 and iMovie 10.1.6 (and I can't upgrade).
Thanks.
P.S. The only change I made to the computer since yesterday is that I installed iOS 14 on my ipod touch. I had to use the MobileDeviceUpdater in order for iTunes to recognize my ipod touch. I can't imagine why it would change anything for iMovie, but nothing else changed.
