There doesn't even seem to be a version of Premiere or Final Cut that will work with my system. This is all so crazy since in the 90s I was a video editor and used Premiere v3.

Getting iMovie to record in a smaller format
I have a Youtube channel, and lately I've been making some pretty long videos. I use iMovie and the computer's webcam to record, and the resulting raw recordings can get pretty huge. Like, 32GB for 2h47. Is there any way to get iMovie to record in a smaller format?

I've been using/learning iMovie in order to create online classes for my students because of COVID19. Everything has been working fine until this morning. iMovie just won't export a file. I've created and exported about 30 videos thus far and I understand the basics. But now, when I select all the clips in a project and select the "Share - File..." option and hit "OK", nothing happens. No error messages, nothing. The little pie-chart progress indicator flashes for a fraction of a second before disappearing for good. The application doesn't bug or freeze (as I can keep working on the video or move to other projects), it just doesn't export the file. I also can't export any of the videos it previously exported in the last few days and weeks. Nor will it export and brand new video. I tried deleting the preferences: didn't solve anything. I'm on 10.13 and iMovie 10.1.6 (and I can't upgrade). Thanks. P.S. The only change I made to the computer since yesterday is that I installed iOS 14 on my ipod touch. I had to use the MobileDeviceUpdater in order for iTunes to recognize my ipod touch. I can't imagine why it would change anything for iMovie, but nothing else changed.

I want to try keeping my iMovie library on an external drive because I use both my iMac (at home) and my MacBook Pro (when traveling) to edit my videos. Ideally, I would like to use a SD card so that it doesn't draw power from my MacBook Pro, but it may be too slow? It will also free up hard drive space on both computers. But when searching about this, Apple's support page says it's possible but advises against it: > "You can store your library on an external storage device such as a USB drive, FireWire drive, or Thunderbolt drive formatted as MacOS Extended (Journaled). Apple doesn’t recommend storing iMovie libraries on external storage devices like SD cards and USB flash drives, or drives shared on a network." Does anyone know why this is so? I want to make sure it's not damaging in anyway.

I have quit all applications aside from the web browser (to write this question). I have tried re-opening and quitting iMovie. The green dot remains, with the status as shown in the image below. I have not yet tried restarting, in particular because I would like to get to the bottom of why this green dot is on and restarting might reset whatever process is causing it. This seems to have started when I opened iMovie for the first time just a few days ago, and connected a firewire interface via firewire to thunderbolt 2 to thunderbolt 3 cables. I am not sure if that is relevant. But, maybe the act of plugging in that device somehow did something? Privacy > iMovie > Camera System Settings

I was making a video, which has 12 photos / images, let's say, each one is displayed for about 30 seconds in the video. I noticed in Final Cut Pro, I can arrange the images "side by side", but then the final video may have 0.2s of black gaps in between, which can be annoying to the viewers. If I drag the edge of the image to "shown longer", it may bump the image next to it to a "higher level" (a higher level timeline), and it appears the "higher level" image would cover up the lower level image (the display precedence). However, what I did later on was a staircase of images... like a stair of 12 steps... which is messy, because when viewing the top most image in the project, and I cannot see how it relates to the sound timeline. What I did later on, by trial and error, was: I make image 1 and 3 wider at the edge where they overlap with image 2, and image 2 is bumped up to a higher level. Now I do the same later on, so that image 4, 6, 8, etc, are also bumped up to level 2... so it is just like a zigzag pattern with only 2 levels. Image 2 will take "precedence" over image 1 and 3, and so there is no tiny gaps whatsoever. Image 4 takes precedence over image 3 and 5, and so on. But is this the proper way? Is there a way just to place them on the same level and use some tools to "make them all go into a perfect series with no gaps"? Or better yet, make them go into a perfect series and also have a 0.3s or 0.5s or fade out fade in effect? Right now if I have to do transition animation manually by hand for all 12 images, I'd go crazy. (it is opacity transitioning and it is not easy and each one can take 30 seconds if I am fast, but 12 of them means it'd take 6 minutes). Maybe if Final Cut Pro doesn't have such a feature, maybe iMovie has it? (I was trying Windows Movie Maker some 10 years ago and it did have a function just to automatically let me add 10 photos and add fade out fade in for them all automatically so it took me 5 seconds to do it).

I recently started some basic editing of my GoPro footage using iMovie on macOS, but quickly ran into some limitations of iMovie i.e. it cannot import MP4 footage greater than around 2GB. I tried using ffmpeg to split up the MP4, but I think the GoPro metadata in the GoPro TCD, GoPro MET, GoPro SOS streams is tripping up ffmpeg and most of my attempts with it have been failures. Is there any other small, ideally command-line-based tool, that is known to work with GoPro MP4 footage to split them into smaller MP4s by duration or file size (while being mindful of the keyframes)? I am aware of Davinci Resolve but I am keen to prove the workflow with iMovie. I am looking for something that has a small footprint, is simple to use, doesn't do a whole lot of things, and is not a full-blown video editor (which would defeat the purpose of using iMovie)

I have a Mac Mini (Mid-2011 model), running Mac OS X 10.11.6, with iMovie 10.1.6. I have a iMovie Library.imovielibrary file in the ~/Movies folder, which contains all my iMovie projects. When I don't have iMovie running, and I perform a Time Machine backup, Time Machine backs up the file just fine. However, when I have iMovie running, Time Machine does not back up the file. For some reason, Time Machine believes the iMovie Library file has been deleted, while iMovie remains open. And then when I quit iMovie, Time Machine backs up the iMovie Library file again, since it is then able to "see" the iMovie Library again, even though it never went anywhere. And since Time Machine thought the iMovie Library was deleted, then later sees it, it thinks that the iMovie Library is new, so it backs the whole thing up, rather than only the changes that were made since the last iMovie Library backup. So, why does Time Machine believe that the iMovie Library is deleted while iMovie is open, and how can I fix it? I've already tried running First Aid on my internal drive, but that didn't fix it.

iMovie - when selecting crop controls, no adjustable frame appears
I'm trying to crop a clip in my iMovie project. After I select cropping controls, whether I'm using "Fit" or "Crop to Fill" or "Ken Burns" there's no white adjustable frame like I see in many of the how to videos. Has that feature been removed? **How do I access the cropping frame?**

I have some video files that came from a digital video camera. If I examine the file using exiftool, I see an output that includes:
SB-iMac(~/Movies/trial) % exiftool f1.dv
ExifTool Version Number : 12.40
File Name : f1.dv
Directory : .

File Modification Date/Time : 2024:05:19 12:26:08-04:00

Date/Time Original : 2009:01:18 11:28:30
After converting with Handbrake and selecting "passthrough common metadata", exiftool reveals:
SB-iMac(~/Movies/trial) % exiftool f1.m4v
ExifTool Version Number : 12.40
File Name : f1.m4v
Directory : .

File Access Date/Time : 2024:05:19 12:26:08-04:00
The Date/Time Original field does not appear in this listing of metadata for the converted file. If I load both files into FinalCutPro, the original file appears as 'its own event' dated 'Jan 18, 2009' and the converted file as an event for 'May 19, 2024'. Within FCP, I cannot find that the revealed metadata for the original file includes the date in 2009. I tried to create my own view of metadata in FCP and selected the 'Date Time Original'. However, even that option does not reveal the 2009 date.) Is there a way of keeping the earlier date in the file conversion process?

I get this error when I try to play videos downloaded from *Google Photos* on the QuickTime player: > This file contains some media which isn’t compatible with QuickTime Player. Would you like to open the file anyway? If I press "continue" the QuickTime player plays just the audio from the video as if it were an audio file. Before uploading to *Google Photos*, these videos were taken via iPhone or screen recordings made using QuickTime and have either .mov or .mp4 extensions when they are uploaded. The downloaded files have the same extension. Nevertheless, I suspect some processing occurs that causes the problem. The problem happens whether the videos are edited (using QT, iMovie, ffmpeg) or not. I did some tests and the problem does not occur if I download immediately after uploading -- but if I download from *Google Photos* just 10 hours later or so, the problem occurs. I am able to fix this problem using ffmpeg (see below), but that requires a lot of time and didn't used to have to do that. I believe this problem started within the past few months or so. I am using QuickTime 10.5 on Mac OS 14.0 on a 2020 MacAir (M1). I'm also using iMovie 10.4 and ffmpeg 6.1.1 Anything else I can do? #### More details Regarding the editing that I do, it is done using QT or iMovie, exporting the result with higher quality (which produces .mp4) and then adjusting video size and quality with ffmpeg commands such as:
ffmpeg -i large.mp4 -s 640:360 -c:a copy small.mp4
or even just:
ffmpeg -i large.mp4 small.mp4
Then I upload to *Google Photos*, wait 10+ hours and the problem occurs. The ffmpeg command I use to fix the problem is:
ffmpeg -i GooglePhotoDownload.mp4 converted.mp4
The "converted.mp4" will then play video with QuickTime.

My questions: 1. How come the file size *increases* after I cut something from it, encoded both with H.264? 2. Why does iMovie not offer me the input resolution as an output resolution? I'd like to be able to trim a video and save it with roughly the same size/time ratio.

When trying to save a 15-minute movie from iMovie in order to upload it in the YouTube app, I frequently get the message "Storage Full: There is not enough space left on this device. You cannot share until you free some space." This despite the fact that Settings shows "28.8 GB of 64 GB Used" and that iMovie is using only 1.29 GB of that. (It also shows that iMovie was "Last Used: 12/12/18" which is clearly false; is that a clue that the storage graph is inaccurate?)
