Where would the Google Photos app on iOS keep its thumbnails and photos? The same place or within the app’s data location?
If it’s stored somewhere in the Google Photos app data section of the phone, would deleting the app remove any and all of these thumbnails from the device if the photos are deleted, getting rid of the thumbnails when the google photos app is restored?
Thank you!

I've looked all around, and I am aware that this is simple, but I have had immense trouble finding a straight answer.
I simply want the actions made on one device to affect the photo on all libraries as it is supposed to.
If I delete or edit a photo on my Photos app on my laptop, how long does it take for that effect to occur on the iPhone? Because, as of now, it is not quick.
Also, is there no way to have a delete affect photos that have already auto-synced with Google Photos? Why can it work one way (Google deletes affecting iCloud photos) but not the other way around??
This integration that is meant to make things easier is not always the most helpful.

I get this error when I try to play videos downloaded from *Google Photos* on the QuickTime player:
> This file contains some media which isn’t compatible with QuickTime Player. Would you like to open the file anyway?
If I press "continue" the QuickTime player plays just the audio from the video as if it were an audio file.
Before uploading to *Google Photos*, these videos were taken via iPhone or screen recordings made using QuickTime and have either .mov or .mp4 extensions when they are uploaded. The downloaded files have the same extension. Nevertheless, I suspect some processing occurs that causes the problem.
The problem happens whether the videos are edited (using QT, iMovie, ffmpeg) or not. I did some tests and the problem does not occur if I download immediately after uploading -- but if I download from *Google Photos* just 10 hours later or so, the problem occurs.
I am able to fix this problem using ffmpeg (see below), but that requires a lot of time and didn't used to have to do that. I believe this problem started within the past few months or so.
I am using QuickTime 10.5 on Mac OS 14.0 on a 2020 MacAir (M1). I'm also using iMovie 10.4 and ffmpeg 6.1.1
Anything else I can do?
#### More details
Regarding the editing that I do, it is done using QT or iMovie, exporting the result with higher quality (which produces .mp4) and then adjusting video size and quality with ffmpeg commands such as:
ffmpeg -i large.mp4 -s 640:360 -c:a copy small.mp4
or even just:
ffmpeg -i large.mp4 small.mp4
Then I upload to *Google Photos*, wait 10+ hours and the problem occurs. The ffmpeg command I use to fix the problem is:
ffmpeg -i GooglePhotoDownload.mp4 converted.mp4
The "converted.mp4" will then play video with QuickTime.

iOS - Google Photos not syncing often enough
***"TL;DR":*** Does Google Photos app behave the same on iOS devices as on Android devices? ***"TL;DR":*** Does Google Photos app behave the same on iOS devices as on Android devices? It seems it makes backups much less frequently, and I couldn't find any data that supports that aside from some shady blog ([How Often Does Google Photos Backup On IPhone?](https://www.compsmag.com/blogs/how-often-does-google-photos-backup-on-iphone/)) .
**Comment:** I can see individual storage for each family member (through Google One app or https://one.google.com) . The photos are being backed up occasionally, and after I see her storage not going up for a while, I ask her to open the app - then the storage immediately goes up. Or, if I open the app on her phone myself, I can see the backup status, and there are often dozens of photos/videos to be backed up. After it's finished, they show up in Google Photos. So the photos are being synchronized, but only at irregular intervals. *(Copied from my comment below to clarify)*
**Premise:** I don't own an iPhone, but my niece recently (well, six months ago) got one. We use a family account for YouTube Premium and Google One for storage. All members have an Android except for the niece so it wouldn't make much sense to set up a paid iCloud account.
**The problem:** We're used to Google Photos syncing instantly (on Android, when it's set up correctly). However, on her iPhone, it syncs once or twice a day at most. Sometimes, we have to remind her to open the "Google Photos" app for syncing when we notice no increase in Google One usage, as she's prone to losing/damaging her phones (and she loves taking photos and videos of everything, so if Google One usage remains the same - there's a problem).
**The device:** It's an iPhone 11 Pro, using probably the latest iOS 16 version, as I do the upgrade every time I'm around. The last time was probably three days ago. However, the problem persisted ever since she got her iPhone. Google Photos seems to be always up-to-date, so I guess it downloads the app updates automatically.
**What I've tried:** Of course, I've checked background apps. Google Photos is allowed on Wi-Fi and cell (unlimited plan). Battery savings is turned off. I've tried logging off and on. Yeah, we tried rebooting. However, it still only seems to run the sync at irregular intervals.
***"Irregular intervals":*** It's not so irregular, there seems to be a pattern. After she starts the app, it seems to work fine for the next few hours, if so. And then the updates become more and more irregular. After a while, it only updates once a day, or once in two days, and then we ask her to just open the app and close it.

I want to use Google Photos to back up my photos from my iPhone SE running iOS 10. I'm connected to Wi-Fi. I start the backup process and I connect my phone to power and then I lock it. It should just sit there and happily back up my photos. But if I come back to it after a few minutes, it seems like it had disconnected from Wi-Fi and that it only just reconnected after I unlocked it again. When I open the Google Photos app, it has to start backing up all over again.
How can I keep my iPhone connected to Wi-Fi while it's locked? (Like it should be!)

I have more than 5 000 photos stored on Google Photos and I'd like to know what's the easiest way to move them on iCloud photos. Since the free storage ends on June I want to move everything on iCloud.
Here's what I've tried :
- Selecting all of them on the Google Photos app and downloading them, but it randomly skips some pictures, and it stops after some hours of download. Since it downloads them in a random order I have to delete them all and start over.
- Downloading them from Google Takeout and uploading them from icloud.com on a PC, but it only accepts JPEG files, so most of the pictures are not uploaded (the file format is .HEIC) and videos are skipped.
I have no other idea on how to do this, I hope anyone can help!

I also use Google Photos to make a copy of my iPhone Photo library that is shared with my partner. Google Photos correctly syncs all of my iPhone photos, except when a photo is deleted from Apple Photos: when a photo is deleted from Apple Photos, it remains in Google Photos.
Is there a way to configure Google Photos to sync both photo additions and photo delete actions from my Apple Photos library?

I want to create a comprehensive cloud photo archive together with my girlfriend, for all our mobile devices and laptops.
This is what we want:
1. Photos should be archived in full resolution
2. Photos should be automatically uploaded from iPhones
I’m a bit desperate because everything I tried so far failed:
1. Dropbox: uploads everything into one folder and would mix up the sources of the photos; plus it would require sharing my Dropbox ID
2. iCloud: it’s only possible to share albums, so sharing the entire collection is cumbersome. Plus, backing up shared albums seems difficult (I’d need to manually save them and would create redundant copies for all photos I uploaded before to the shared album)
I’m now eyeing at Google Photos. It seems to be best at sharing libraries and - of you pay - allows you to upload full scale pictures. While I’m worried about Google’s tendency to grab data, I’m willing to accept that.
Now my questions:
1. What so you use for sharing entire photo libraries from different devices with your family?
2. Would you recommend using one account for our collection, or two separate ones? With two separate accounts, can you share full resolution photos using the Shared Library function? With ohne, is there a way to separate between sources (i.e. what she uploads from her iPhone / why I upload from my iPhone / why she uploads from laptop / ...)

I use an iCloud shared photo album to share photos and videos with my family, but I'm slowly reaching the limit of 5000 photos and videos per album , so I'm considering migrating this album to Google Photos, with its current limit of 20000 photos or videos per album .
How can I copy this iCloud Photos shared album to Google Photos, ideally along with all metadata?
- All photos and videos, the reduced resolution stored on iCloud is sufficient
- Capture date/time, so that the pictures and videos are sorted chronologically
- Comments, at least those I wrote myself, ideally also those added by my family
Because of the big number of pictures involved, I'd like to limit the number of manual steps in this procedure.
Maybe there's even an app for that?

I recently painstakingly migrated my photo library of 15+ years (over 100gb) from google photos to iCloud. I suspect many more will be doing this in the future as google recently announced they will no longer be doing unlimited storage for photos. The problem here is that the library exports originals as well as an
-edited
version for those files you have changed in google photos. I've tried multiple automatic tools and had some luck with [photosweeper](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/photosweeper/id463362050?mt=12) but am sure that i still have a few gb of undetected duplicates hiding in there. In some cases Photosweeper just doesn't seem to be sophisticated enough to find them - For example photos from a scanning service that all have the same date, or edited versions where i have rotated and changed the aspect ratio.
Complicating this is the way Mac OS automatically manages photo storage on the machine, so i'm hesitant to attempt to run any scripts on underlying files that might corrupt the library. In a perfect world I would just do something like
- find all files matching (.+)-edited.{jpg,png,heic}$
- where there is a matching file without the -edited
- select and delete/trash the non-edited version
- in a way that is safe for my photos library
An alternative might be to start over completely and use the google drive app on my desktop to download and copy all pictures that way, but i'm worried i would lose files that way too.

Problem: when I cast a video from Google Photos to Chromecast using my iPhone, I see that only the image of the video is cast to TV, the TV has no sound and the frame is lag, the sound remain on my iPhone, but if I press home on my iPhone, then the casting to my TV stopped.
Then I try using Google Photos on my friend's Samsung Android to cast a video, and it works perfectly.
I see that this problem exists since 2018, many has complained:
- No sound when I cast videos from the Google Photos app to my TV,
audio only plays from my phone.
- No sound when casting Google photos to tv. All other apps like Spotify and youtube works fine .
- iOS Photos App, Cloud-Only Video to Chromecast (2&3): No Sound from TV, only iOS device
This is the end of 2020 and it's still not fixed. So I don't expect Google will fix this on iPhone.
Some user said

So beside having a local copy exists on iOS device, is there other way? Or I guess I'll just buy a Samsung Android to cast Google Photos video.

So if I let Google Photos store all my photos and videos with unlimited storage and "good quality", then I can let one or multiple iPhones / iPads back up to iCloud with the 5GB free plan?
What may the settings be to choose which to back up to iCloud? For example, for emails, those don't really need to be backed up because they are on the email server anyway?
