One or another of the various macOS background daemons that comes with the operating system is always popping up and using a ton of CPU in the background. This is generally slightly bothersome, but it's *really* annoying while I'm trying to play demanding video games that really need the system's full attention. This visibly hurts the framerate and I need to go and investigate in iStat Menus or something to nuke the offending process manually. Is there a way to comprehensively pause or at least aggressively throttle *all* system background activity while I'm doing something demanding? Mostly I want this for applications that are demanding of input responsiveness, like video games, but it would be nice for CPU intensive batch jobs that might take an hour or two to run, too; tell the system to please chill out in the background and not suck up either CPU or I/O to let the jobs run either more repsonsively or faster. I'm being non-specific because “Why is daemon X taking up so much CPU” is a common genre of question on this site and others like it (previously , previously , previously , previously , previously , previously , previously , previously , previously , previously , previously ). *All* of these daemons are implicated at various points. Probably the worst offenders are syspolicyd, AMPDevicesAgent, and worst of all suggestd, but all the usual suspects show up at one point or another. As such, I'm not looking for a *permanent* answer for how to fix these problems all the time, i.e. how to make these daemons go away, because: 1. There's too many of them; I am resigned to just having weird energy leaks and performance problems until Apple provides some more transparency for their background daemons. 2. At least for right now, they're *mostly* behaving themselves *most* of the time, and I realize they provide value by indexing things and doing stuff in the background to provide responsiveness in the moment. 3. With an Apple Silicon machine, they appear to mostly be persistently scheduled onto the Efficiency cores and have less of a devastating performance and battery impact than they used to, as a result. What I'm looking for is more of a *temporary* fix for when I need maximum performance, which would allow me to simply quiet down the background performance interference rather than shutting it down completely. I know the system needs this stuff to run for all the functionality to work and I don't want to take an axe to necessary parts of the OS, but I'd also like to get a consistent 120 FPS in 5-year-old games without dropping to 2-3FPS for a minute and getting killed because it was *really* important to Mail.app to make sure I could instantly search for some direct marketer's phone number because it downloaded a new message into its spam folder.

Before I get to this...I shall ask my question.* In 1 or 2 months I plan to buy a 2023 Mac mini (the base model) since I'm on a budget. If I use both usb-c ports for the 2 monitors only will that affect performance on the Mac mini? My question is........? will this affect performance and make the machine lag a bit? or will I be able to do these things simultaneously with no issue? I welcome all advice as well as a recommendation on budget-friendly ultrawide monitors that are usb-c compatible. thank you kindly.

How can I switch among application windows using [Cmd/Opt + 1/2/3...](https://askubuntu.com/questions/813262/which-desktop-environments-allow-switching-among-windows-with-supernumbers) etc, like on Unity or KDE? Why? This is especially handy if you often switch among the same few apps, e.g. a browser, a file manager and an IDE, but also have other apps open, so Alt+Tabbing to the desired window would take more time. That keyboard shortcut saves me probably 5 seconds per minute on the average, so ~40 minutes a day, and it's supported by Windows as well. I tried using the native Automator and Keyboard shortcuts in System settings, but the shortcut is only picked up in *some* applications (e.g. Automator, Webstorm), but most applications seem to consume it before it reaches the system. # To create the shortcut with Automator: 1. ⌘+Space and launch Automator 2. Choose "Quick action" 3. Set the "Workflow receives current" to no "input" 4. In the panel on the left, filter for the Run Shell Script Action and double click it 5. In the Run shell script text area, replace cat with the command to run your application, e.g. open -a "Google Chrome". 6. File -> Save and name your shortcut, e.g. Chrome launch/switch to ## Assign the keyboard shortcut 1. ⌘+Space and type keyboard shortcuts to access it in System Settings 2. Click Services -> General and you'll see your newly created shortcut 3. Double click none and press your hotkey combo, e.g. ⌘+1 4. Click Done I'm looking for a more reliable solution than the system's Keyboard shortcuts.

I have updated my iPad operating system from iOS 11.4 to iPadOS 14.3. Unfortunately, suspended apps are now immediately killed in the background while in the older version I could keep many apps suspended in the background without need to be restarted when being used again (Even, Safari often refreshes open tabs when I want to use them after a short while during which they were not active; such a thing has also happened on the older OS, but with much less frequency). One might expect such a bug for non-Apple apps because of non-compatibility with the new OS update, but it really surprised me that such a problem exists with Apple apps such as Safari and Pages. It is really annoying, especially when you are writing some post on a Stack Exchange network and need to use some other app. I wonder whether this can be avoided somehow. PS: It is worth saying that my iPad has enough free memory, more than that when running the older OS.

I'm trying to change the color of the background linen texture on Keynote Master Slides from olive green to the dusty blue seen here: enter image description here I was able to change the background color on the ***plain*** slides, as seen in that image, but am not able to change the edges on slides built of several layers (by Apple) to simulate a book page. I have gone into **Applications>Keynote.app>Contents>Resources** to look at the assets and found some useful items *(i.e., canvas_bluepurple_low_res.jpg, canvas_bluepurple_mipmaps.plist, canvas_bluepurple_jpg, Linen.sfcimage.plist, Linen.sfctex.plist, tile_bluepurple.jpg)* but don't see how to use them to change the theme color for ALL the slide masters. I know this has been asked before (https://bit.ly/3KqLVI2) but responders didn't seem to understand the OP's question. I hope the image I've shared above—showing the green tint to the linen frame around the slide (making it look like a linen-covered book) and the blue-purple color I was able to use as a background for the Title Slide—will help clarify.

That is, the task-switcher selection will fly over to the right-most icon. If I mouse-over the app icons, the cursor will continue constantly moving to the right. I doubt it's a stuck Tab key, because I use the Tab key all the time when coding, navigating Cocoa controls, etc...never have a problem with Tabs being constantly entered. This only ever occurs on Command-Tab. Any ideas?

I'm on High Sierra 10.13.5. Following these steps to use my unblurred original wallpaper on the initial login screen of my Mac worked perfectly. Now I would like to do the same thing with the lock screen. While at work I have to lock the screen every time I step away from my desk. But I've never liked that my wallpaper is blurred while on the lock screen. I searched and searched but I couldn't find any instructions for getting rid of the blur effect on the lock screen, only for the *login screen*, which, as I've said, I've already done successfully. Does anyone know if it's possible to remove the blur effect from the lock screen wallpaper?

I launched an app on my iPhone, and shortly after launch it stopped doing anything; but whatever it did has stopped the swipe-up gesture from working, so I can't get to the application switcher to kill it. I can use the side button to lock and unlock the phone, so I can get to the Lock Screen, and I can swipe down to get to the control centre, but no matter where or how much I swipe upwards the app just keeps running in the foreground. I don't think the app has hung, because I'd have thought the OS would have killed it by now; it just sits there intercepting the swipes. I have other things running in the background which I want to keep running, so I don't want to turn my phone off. I've seen that there are accessibility settings which might help... but they're no good to me as I can't get to the settings app. How do I kill the running app, without turning the phone off or changing any settings, when swiping up doesn't bring up the application switcher?

If I forget to do that, **the job continues to run during sleep, but at about 50% of normal speed**. Does anyone know why that happens? My first guess was a power-saving strategy, but my laptop power adaptor is always plugged in. This is not a critical problem for me, I'm just curious. Normally I disable sleeping, and if I forget, at worst I get about half as much work done overnight than I expect.
