The problem is that I use a "Top Right" hot corner to activate Mission Control, and have since that feature was released as Exposé in OS X 10.3 in 2003. Because that hot corner is located *above* that collapsed shelf, the Spaces shelf is fully expanded every time I use the hot corner. The collapsed view is never shown.
> Mission Control activated via a Top Left or Top Right hot corner; Spaces shelf always expanded:

I would like to keep using the same hot corner due to muscle memory. But I don't use Spaces, so I would like to remove that space-wasting and [Exposé-spatial-layout](https://superuser.com/questions/118424/old-leopard-expose-on-snow-leopard-for-mac)-wrecking expanded Spaces shelf.
1. Can the Spaces shelf be disabled and hidden entirely from the Mission Control all windows view, for all activation methods? This would be like using old Exposé, before it was expanded to Mission Control.
2. Using a Top Left or Top Right activation hot corner for Mission Control, is there any way for the Spaces shelf to not be *immediately* displayed upon every activation? I wouldn't mind still seeing the collapsed view, but I want to expand the shelf intentionally by click or moving out and re-hovering.

I'm a new MacOS user and some things disturb me as it was more convenient on Windows.
One of them is the following: on a dual screen set up, I have to first click the second monitor for it to take the focus and only then do my actual work. On Windows, I was able to flawlessly switch from one screen to the other without the need to first focus it.
In other words, on Mac, when I'm on a screen and just move the mouse to the other and start to, say, select some text, my action is just ignored (as it's only the initial focus) and I have to start it again. On Windows it just select my text the first time.
It is quite annoying, as I often switch from one screen to the other (dev tools on one screen, debugging browser on the other).
Is there a solution to this problem?

I'm using a window snapping/resizing app and this feature above, introduced in El Capitan, is being triggered instead. This when I snap a window to the center top of the screen.
Is there a way to turn this feature off?

On MacOS, closing the last window of an app does not close that app. (To speed up opening a new window later, I assume.)
### Motivation
Let's look at 2 common activities:
A) opening a document/file that is currently closed, or creating a new one. For this, I use finder, or I open (if closed) / switch to (if open) the wanted app from spotlight and do the rest there.
B) looking for a document/file that is open in some window. For this, I use CMD+Tabbing, or click on the app in the dock, or switch to the space where I know the document is located.
**Because I use CMD+Tabbing exclusively for (B), I don't want to see apps without windows there.**
---
For completeness: if it's easier/possible to hide these "apps without windows" altogether (without closing them), that's even better. With "hiding altogether", I mean:
* hide them from command-tab;
* hide them from the dock;
* don't switch to them when changing space.
When command tabbing, can I have it exclusively show only apps with document windows open?

I always use Safari in its own space with the window fully zoomed (*not* full screen). For as long as I can remember, whenever I would launch Safari or open a new window, I'd get a window zoomed full screen as if the system remembered my last window size.
In fact, even now, if I open a new Safari window, resize it to be 1/4 of the screen, close it, and then open a new window, that new window will be the same size as the one I just closed filling the same 1/4 of the screen, so it seems the system does keep track of recent window sizes.
Immediately after updating to macOS 15, however, new Safari windows would no longer be fully zoomed. Instead, they appear to be fully vertically zoomed, but leave a small margin on either the left or the right of the window. Of course, I can hover over the green window control and use the new 'Fill & Arrange' feature to zoom to full screen, and I changed my system settings to fully zoom when I double-click the title bar since it's a lot faster than using the window controls. (Incidentally, I discovered there's no default system keyboard shortcut to zoom a window, which surprises me.) But it really bugs me that once I've zoomed a Safari window, if I close it and immediately open a new one, the system forgets I was just using a fully zoomed window and I have to take that one extra step to zoom it to full screen.
I suppose this is more of a sanity check—am I nuts, or has anyone else noticed the same change in behavior? I've Googled around, and I see lots of complaints throughout the years about trouble using zoom controls, but I haven't seen anyone complain about this specific problem in Sequioa.

Is there any app which allows Mission Control to display app windows in a grid format rather than a Jackson Pollock sort of spritz?
I'd like options to:
- Display windows in a grid, where:
- Selection area for each window has equal space reserved.
- Actual preview maintains window aspect ratio. (Doesn't stretch to fill whole selection area.)
- Selection area maximizes to fill whole screen.
- (Option: Limit max selection area size to fit N windows, for consistency.)
- Display app icon and name above window preview, without overlap.
- Close previewed window, via (X) icon or middle click.
- Close Spaces [Desktop 1, 2, 3, ...] via middle click.
- Group all displayed windows by app, where:
- Clicking selection area of app previews all windows of that app.
- Show all windows across all spaces, where:
- Option to group by app is automatic if there are too many windows.
- (Re-)Sort alphabetic or by most recent.
- Option to additionally show N most recently used windows first (as duplicates or moved from the sort), always or when there are X or more windows.
- Option to double-click Spaces [Desktop 1, 2, 3, ...] to manually name them.
Example:
-
How is this optimal this far after Mission Control's 2011 release?

I have seen this question before but everyone seems to say that it's not a bug, but a feature. I beg to disagree and provide my problem and perspective:
I have Chrome spread between two Spaces in different displays (native and external). I have terminals and Chrome 1 (playing youtube) on the single Space in the native display, and I have two spaces on the external display, one with vscode and other with Chrome 2 (with documentation, github PRs, etc).
Whenever I sweep from my code to the docs window my terminals are replaced by the Chrome in that space (which I don't want, because I can see what's happening there because of Stage Manager providing a small preview of the app, if something interesting happens there I can manually focus on it).
Is there any configuration or external application that allows me to override this behaviour of "clicking" on a window and bringing all the app's windows to focus? You see, I'm not "alt-tabbing" to the app*, to bring focus to the APP, I'm clicking on a window, to get focus on that window, specifically.
*\* = thus the AltTab app solution doesn't work in this case*

I switch between multiple workspaces that are dedicated to various activities (e.g. a music listening workspace using Spotify, a chat workspace using Slack, email on another workspace, etc).
One issue that's cropped up recently is that when I switch to a different workspace and application, _other applications_ are minimized on all workspaces after >30 seconds. This means when I switch from music to chat workspace, the other application is minimized and I need to re-open it from the dock.
This does not affect windows of the same application (e.g. Chrome windows open on different workspaces). It's a bit frustrating that I have to maximize windows every time I switch between workspaces and I can't figure how this behavior has changed in the past week or two.
I don't know if this is related or not, but a few weeks ago I was trying to find a way to rebind the hide all applications keyboard shortcut since I was trying to use that same shortcut in another app ([Rectangle](https://rectangleapp.com/)) . In trying to do that, I ran this command in the terminal:
defaults write "Apple Global Domain" NSUserKeyEquivalents -dict-add "Hide Others" nil

I am using Visual Studio Code on my macbook. When I launch a new instance of VS Code when I already have 1 instance up, via
code
using iTerm, the *already running* instance is the one that has text input focus. This means when the new VS Code instance pops up, I can't immediately start typing in it; I have to click it with my mouse first, *then* I can type.
What I want is for the new instance of VS Code to have text input focus. Is this a MacOS specific setting, something I need to configure in VS Code, or an adjustment in how I launch VS Code from the command line?
Some contextual information:
- MacOS Version: 15.3.1
- In "Desktop & Dock" settings for Mission Control, I have "Automatically rearrange Spaces based on most recent use" disabled, and "Displays have separate spaces" enabled.
- I have 2 external monitors connected and am also using the macbook display (for 3 total).
- The current instance of VS Code is on my middle display, and the new instance pops up on my right display.
- For testing I'm running code
directly in iTerm, but the real use case is when VS Code is launched from git, such as when I do git commit
, because I have Code set up as my git editor with setting core.editor
set to code --wait --new-window
.

That one behavior of my mac really drives me crazy and it suspect a bug, not a feature.
It goes like this: Let's say I opened a new window in Chrome to post a comment here. Then I need to copy something from another application, so I minimize the Chrome window to get it out of the way. I find what I need, then I want to return to my post, so I click the Chrome icon in the task bar. I expect the last used window to be shown, but it seems to always open the very first Chrome window I opened.
I observe the same with TextEdit. I start by quitting TextEdit. Then I open TextEdit from the task bar, write text A and minimze it. I then create a new document (New Document from the task bar) and write text B, and minimize it. Then I click TextEdit in the task bar and it opens text A.
I really see no reason not to open the last window I was working on.
I now have to carefully select from the taskbar the proper Window, which is just annoying. Sometimes I have trouble finding the correct window from the list of windows that my app shows from the taskbar.
Macos Sequoia 15.5 on an Macbook Air M2 with one external display for two active screens.
Is there a way to fix this without a third party window manager?

Saying "Swipe left/right/up/down" implies the end result of the movement, not the actual direction of my fingers. Swiping right means go to the window right of my current window. Swiping down displays all your windows/desktop background. Swiping up does nothing.
Really all I want, is to be able to **swipe up to Spotify from any window** or have a second set of windows on a level above the current, 1-dimensional horizontal window set.
Made a simple mockup as to what I am describing.
Is there already an app that allows things to work in this manner?

I think when window restoration misbehaved, the fix it to remove the files. But on my Mac, all those directories are already empty. This is due affects all apps I care to try.
A restart of the computer makes window restoration work again, so I guess it could also just be about relaunching the right service, which would have crashed, or stalled. But I can't find any information on the subject.
Is there a second clean up needed to save a restart of everything?

In Preview, if the sidebar is opened (e.g. by toggling thumbnails on) when the window is below a certain width, then the window expands to accommodate the sidebar. I think this happens because Preview has some built-in minimum width for the document viewer panel; if you're too close to this minimum there isn't space to shrink the document area to make room for the sidebar. When it's closed again, the document area expands to take up the extra space - so, for example, toggling thumbnails on and off, or searching for something then clicking "Done", makes the whole window wider.
I find this really annoying, for what might be quite a niche reason. I use a window manager (Magnet) and the critical window width appears to be just a bit more than one third of the width of my monitor. There's a shortcut for sizing a window to take up the whole vertical third, but sometimes I'll stack two documents one above the other in the top- and bottom-halves of a vertical third, which I have to do manually. If I search inside one of the documents, the sidebar appears, my window is resized and I have to fiddle with the mouse to get it back in place. Also, it just seems somehow...I don't know, rude? of Preview to override my manually assigned window position. I wouldn't mind so much if the window went back to it's previous size when the sidebar disappeared again, but it doesn't. I am aware that this is slightly petty and neurotic.
Here's an illustration.
Fig. 1 Happily working away
Fig. 2 I search for something in my reference doc and - uh oh!
Fig. 3 DISASTER
Is there a way to override the (putative) minimum width of the document panel in Preview? Or, can someone recommend a better window manager with customisable snap points?
