In recent versions of macOS, Mission Control's all windows view shows a shelf for your Spaces. When first activated, this shelf is collapsed at a small height at the top of the screen that displays each Space's title. If you move your mouse up and hover over that shelf, the shelf expands in height and a full thumbnail of each Space is shown.

The problem is that I use a "Top Right" hot corner to activate Mission Control, and have since that feature was released as Exposé in OS X 10.3 in 2003. Because that hot corner is located *above* that collapsed shelf, the Spaces shelf is fully expanded every time I use the hot corner. The collapsed view is never shown.
> Mission Control activated via a Top Left or Top Right hot corner; Spaces shelf always expanded:

I would like to keep using the same hot corner due to muscle memory. But I don't use Spaces, so I would like to remove that space-wasting and [Exposé-spatial-layout](https://superuser.com/questions/118424/old-leopard-expose-on-snow-leopard-for-mac)-wrecking expanded Spaces shelf.
1. Can the Spaces shelf be disabled and hidden entirely from the Mission Control all windows view, for all activation methods? This would be like using old Exposé, before it was expanded to Mission Control.
2. Using a Top Left or Top Right activation hot corner for Mission Control, is there any way for the Spaces shelf to not be *immediately* displayed upon every activation? I wouldn't mind still seeing the collapsed view, but I want to expand the shelf intentionally by click or moving out and re-hovering.

I'm using a window snapping/resizing app and this feature above, introduced in El Capitan, is being triggered instead. This when I snap a window to the center top of the screen.
Is there a way to turn this feature off?

I’m experiencing an issue with iTerm2’s dropdown window: Sometimes, after extended use when triggered via hotkey, it causes a Space switch, opening in a different Space instead of the current one. The window functions correctly, but it can’t be accessed from any other active Space except for that one. The Space of the window seems to be random -- I’ve been unable to discern the logic behind its choice.
The issue temporarily resolves by closing the dropdown window (closing all tabs) and reopening it, but it recurs intermittently—typically after the system wakes from sleep.
I’ve reviewed and tried the suggestions from the following threads:
• https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/85890/open-iterm-drop-down-console-on-different-screen
I’ve also tested various combinations of Style, Screen, and Space under Preferences > Profiles > Window, without success.
I’m on the latest iTerm2 version and macOS, and this issue has persisted across versions.
I hope to find a solution to the problem, or a way to disable it without having to close the window.

For how I use my laptop, it would be extremely helpful to be able to use Spaces/Desktops in OS X to break up different projects. One project may have a couple of websites/URLs, a pdf and a spreadsheet. It would be very useful to be able to put these in a space, eg have a browser window with tabs for each site that's related the project, the local files, and anything else that's related (maybe an email, document, etc.), close the Space and then open it later as needed.
Is there a way to save Spaces/Desktops like this so that all files, browser tabs, etc. can be reopened at once by "opening" the Space/Desktop?
I am running Mavericks.

Is there any app which allows Mission Control to display app windows in a grid format rather than a Jackson Pollock sort of spritz?
I'd like options to:
- Display windows in a grid, where:
- Selection area for each window has equal space reserved.
- Actual preview maintains window aspect ratio. (Doesn't stretch to fill whole selection area.)
- Selection area maximizes to fill whole screen.
- (Option: Limit max selection area size to fit N windows, for consistency.)
- Display app icon and name above window preview, without overlap.
- Close previewed window, via (X) icon or middle click.
- Close Spaces [Desktop 1, 2, 3, ...] via middle click.
- Group all displayed windows by app, where:
- Clicking selection area of app previews all windows of that app.
- Show all windows across all spaces, where:
- Option to group by app is automatic if there are too many windows.
- (Re-)Sort alphabetic or by most recent.
- Option to additionally show N most recently used windows first (as duplicates or moved from the sort), always or when there are X or more windows.
- Option to double-click Spaces [Desktop 1, 2, 3, ...] to manually name them.
Example:
-
How is this optimal this far after Mission Control's 2011 release?

I use several spaces on my iMac. When i start an application it always open in the current space, except Firefox who will start in the last space it used. This is really annoying because I have to switch to the space Firefox decided to start in which almost never is the space i have selected.
Is this a bug in Firefox, or is it a setting I have that causes this behavior?
1. Settings in the Dock is not what cause this behavior:
2. I tried to use the Dock setting "This Desktop" and the only difference is that when it is enabled, the selected Desktop/Space is switched into view. When I disable "This Desktop", Firefox still launches in the last used Desktop/Space, but the Desktop/Space is not switched into view.
3. I reinstalled Firefox (dragged the app to trash, downloaded from Mozilla and installed) to no avail. I noticed that all settings and history was retained, so perhaps the problem is hidden in the stored data or settings that was not wiped. Will try to wipe all user data.

I have seen this question before but everyone seems to say that it's not a bug, but a feature. I beg to disagree and provide my problem and perspective:
I have Chrome spread between two Spaces in different displays (native and external). I have terminals and Chrome 1 (playing youtube) on the single Space in the native display, and I have two spaces on the external display, one with vscode and other with Chrome 2 (with documentation, github PRs, etc).
Whenever I sweep from my code to the docs window my terminals are replaced by the Chrome in that space (which I don't want, because I can see what's happening there because of Stage Manager providing a small preview of the app, if something interesting happens there I can manually focus on it).
Is there any configuration or external application that allows me to override this behaviour of "clicking" on a window and bringing all the app's windows to focus? You see, I'm not "alt-tabbing" to the app*, to bring focus to the APP, I'm clicking on a window, to get focus on that window, specifically.
*\* = thus the AltTab app solution doesn't work in this case*

I’m using a MacBook Pro with two external monitors and have 10 Spaces (virtual desktops) spread across the built-in and external screens. Whenever I disconnect and then reconnect the external displays (for example after undocking for a while or moving to another, similar, table), MacOS automatically shuffles all my Spaces back to the built-in display and moves my windows around. Is there a program that can move the Spaces back to the external monitors after connecting, without having to drag each of them separately?
(Please note this question is specifically about the virtual spaces, not window locations, as e.g. this one or this one . The programs mentioned there are only concerned with window locations. And I did already switch off "Automatically rearrange Spaces based on most recent use" and switched on "Displays have separate Spaces" for Mission Control.)

I am using MacOS Sonoma 14.4 on M1 Max macbook.
When using shortcuts to move left/right a space, not only the animation is slow, but then the time to interactivity is also slow. Whereas if I jump to the same space using the "Switch to Desktop" shortcut, it is fast as expected.
To reproduce:
1. Open text editor on both space/desktop 1 and 2
2. Use the same shortcut as I show here, which you can set up in Keyboard shortcuts under mission control
3. from space 2, compare the speed of going left to space 1 and then try to type as soon as possible, and compare that with doing the same but using the "Switch to desktop 1" shortcut instead.
Please tell me I am not the only one! I want to find a solution for this.

I have a mid-2014 15-inch MacBook Pro (the one with the Retina display) with macOS 10.12.6. I use spaces a lot and normally have my most-used apps open in specific spaces. One of these is Safari, which is set to always open in space 2 (out of 5). However, I often move Safari windows to different spaces as needed (for instance, if I'm going to use a website for reference while using an app that runs on space 4, I'll move the window with that website to space 4).
I tend to leave Safari open when I turn my computer off; that way, I get back any windows and tabs which I was using in my last session and am likely to use again in my next session. However, when the computer starts up, sometimes some of the windows which were in different spaces go back to space 2. It doesn't happen always, and when it happens it only happens with some windows (so, for example, the window on space 1 will remain there but the windows on spaces 3-5 will have migrated to space 2).
(I know that quitting Safari and reopening it causes all windows to go to the space where it's opened or where it's told to open in. I'm talking about Safari restarting by itself again after I've shut down or restarted the computer without having quit Safari, which normally puts windows in the spaces they were in before the computer was shut down or restarted.)
Does anyone know why this happens?

I work multiple jobs so I assign different spaces for it. I want that space to act as its own desktop. Like if I open Finder, it will open a new Finder window on that space and not take me to the space where there's an opened finder app :(

I have a 2022 MBP 14" (M1 Pro, Monterey 12.5.1), I often work with an external monitor in addition to the laptop display.
I use **Spaces** when doing so, it's a great feature and I'll organise various apps in each space according to what task I'm currently working on in that Space.
However when my mac sleeps and reawakens, it often rearranges those apps themselves, moving them from the space they previously existed, and into the (now reawakened) Space on the laptop itself.
Every time I look into this issue all I find are the docs for turning off "Automatically rearrange Spaces based on most recent use". Which is _not_ what the issue is (I have that turned off anyway).
The spaces themselves remain in place, the apps within them however are redistributed to another space on every startup.
The primary apps that seem affected are:
- Google Chrome
- Visual Studio Code
These stand out to me as they are typically sized _larger_ than what my laptop screen can fit, in my mind on startup (before the Mac recognises the external monitor) they are resized and in doing so _moved_, but this is me trying to come up with some explanation for the madness.
To note; I have "Displays have separate Spaces" enabled to allow each monitor to have it's own Space _by design_.
Trying to use this functionality when on every restart I have to spend 5 minutes manually recognising and dragging apps back to where they belong is absolutely killer.
**EDIT**: In addition to trying the wake timing as noted in a reply below, I've also attempted the fix in this (7 year old) thread I dug out on the same subject. https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/151133/maintain-allocation-of-windows-to-spaces-on-restart-and-external-monitor-unplugg
Adding an additional empty Space on the laptop itself seemingly does nothing to help.

This is a problem I've experienced in the past, but it seems to have gotten much, much, *much* worse under Monterey. It's a fairly simple problem: Whenever my computer wakes from sleep, none of my windows are in the places I left them. They sometimes move on the display they're supposed to be on, but more often, they move to other Spaces. If it helps, I use two large external displays on a MacBook Pro with the lid closed.
I've tried using Display Maid to save and restore window positions, and while this helps somewhat, it can only restore windows to their previous coordinates on the current screen. It has no knowledge of Spaces whatsoever.
Any ideas?

I use my laptop for both work and home use and am trying to improve logical separation of these purposes using spaces.
I have created two spaces, but have a problem where I accidentally switch back to the wrong space because the separation of windows is not sufficient.
For example, if I want to use a Firefox window, the dock lists all windows that exist irrespective of which space they are in. This means my personal and work windows are muddled up and easily confused.
In the above screenshot, the first and third window should show in Space 1, and the active window should be in Space 2 (because that is what I have open now and am in space 2).
Here's what I've done so far to improve separation:
* Disabled 'When switching to an application, switch to a Space ith open windows for the application'.
* Installed AltTab to change the cmd-tab shortcut to not show windows from other spaces.

With

" disabled, transitions to other spaces still occur.
When I click an app icon in the dock
for an app which does **not** have
an associated window open in the present space,
I'd like to stop switching to
a a window associated with the app which
is open in a different space.
Instead, I'd like clicking the dock app icon to
activate the app (in the top/menu bar) if it is not active and to
open a new window or do nothing if it is the active app.
If multiple associated windows were open in the current space,
I'd like to cycle through them and only them on the current space,
so long as
"When switching to an application,
switch to a Space with open windows for that application"
is enabled.

I'm switching from three smaller screens to one big 42" monitor with Rectangle to emulate multiple monitors. It works great and I enjoy the flexibility in arranging the windows. However one thing missing is separate spaces. I used to have essential apps / documents on one 'main' monitor with others having multiple spaces. Now I have to switch the whole screen and have to go back and forth to find what I need. It's just a minor annoyance but I'm wondering are there apps to remedy this? By splitting one big screen into multiple smaller, virtual screens.
