Frequently, when I try to open the (10.9) Finder's "Open With..." menu, I experience a delay that appears to be due to connected FireWire drives. This delay is very long when the drives need to spin up , but is also perceptible when the drives have not spun down. For me, this delay makes no sense: I have no applications that I use stored on my external drives, and I have disabled Spotlight searches of these drives (using Spotlight's "Privacy" setting ).
Is there some way to prevent the "Open With..." menu examining external drives?
---
Note that this is not a question about speeding up the OW menu in general (e.g., by pruning apps and file type associations), nor about keeping duplicate apps on external drives from appearing in the OW menu (I have none as my Spotlight settings noted above exclude them).

I upgraded my iMac Late 2013 to Catalina. When I login through Anydesk or Chrome Remote Desktop I see my desktop for a split second and then im presented with the lock screen again.
While Anydesk is open, I can press 'switch user' in CRD which then shows me my screensaver. Then if I start moving around the screen saver eventually quits and I can use my desktop in CRD, while anydesk still sees the switch user screen (the available users and the sleep/restart/shut down options)
After a fresh reboot I was on with CRD & Anydesk. I closed CRD, and I was back to the starting issue where the screen just locks and using CRD at same time I was able to login. Sometime later I ended up with total lockout - neither Anydesk or CRD will connect even though I know the Mac is online running scripts.
Two remote connections, same iMac:
I've also now put in Teamviewer and I have the same issue - as soon as I type my password it locks on me. It sems like something is locking the cursor because with every letter I type the password field loses focus and I have to click again and quickly type the next letter.
These are the relevant options I can think of:
- Energy Saver: Turn display off after 10 min, prevent auto sleep when display off, put disks to sleep when possible, wake for network, auto start on power failure, enable power nap.
- Screen Saver: Start after Never
- Amphetamine: Launch at login, start session when launch or waking sleep, indefinite duration, allow display sleep, (no screen saver, no forced sleep). Lock screen after 15 min inactivity, allow display sleep when screen locked.

I have a Macbook Pro 16" 2019 that automatically boots after I shut it down.
When I shutdown the macbook as per usual (Apple Icon > Shut Down), and close the lid, it will boot up automatically, because I hear the boot sound.
It typically happens when I pick it up, or pick up my backpack and it's inside.
I have tried forcing it off (pressing and holding the fingerprint reader), but it has no effect, it also boots automatically.
I have found https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/334069/macbook-air-starts-up-when-i-close-the-lid and tried the solutions proposed there, but none of them worked.
The things I checked are ensuring the power nap feature is off, removing any applications that might have launchd installed (only opengpg), and reinstalling this machine.
One of my hypotheses is that when you pick up the device the touchpad registers movement and boots based off of that, but then this must be a hardware malfunction because nobody else at work has the issue.
I completely wiped the macbook and installed a vanilla version of Mac OSX.

My MacBook Pro running macOS 12.2.1, fails to connect to any Wi-Fi network after it has been asleep for some time.
I open my laptop assuming it will be connected still, which it is not, then when I go to reselect the network it should already be connected too, it connects for a couple seconds then disconnects.
I have to restart my MacBook just for it to hold it's connection.
I'm assuming this is a software bug, does anyone else have this issue?

I've got three screens connected to my M1 Mac Studio.
In around 60% of screen wake-ups, I get windows from one of my screens repositioned to my primary, as if the secondary was disconnected and reconnected. There is no percievable delay in it coming up, all of the screens turn on roughly at the same time when I press a key/click my mouse.
My thinking is that one of the screens does take a little longer to come up (and it's always the same one) behind the scenes, which causes the behaviour.
Is there any way to tell my OS to wait for a little longer before it deems the screen to be disconnected? One can imagine how annoying it is to be reorganising windows so frequently.

I've always set hibernatemode to 25 for all my old Mac's (running OS 10.10.5) without a problem. However, setting hibernatemode to 25 on Catalina didn't seem to work, even when I turned off the Standby feature as suggested in this link: https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/352504/macos-mojave-hibernatemode-25-dark-wake-sleep-wake .
Whenever I open the lid, I see the login screen immediately; apparently it did not wake from a hibernation state. I checked the "Wake from" Console history and it showed several "Wake from Deep Idle" events; none of them was "Wake from Hibernate".
Is it possible to make Catalina hibernate?

I have a 13-inch 2017 MacBook Pro (Intel Core i5) with a Touch Bar. I've noticed, that it occasionally disappears, and then after a few days re-appears.
It is not a hardware problem, as [killing the touch bar server](https://discussions.apple.com/thread/254759141?sortBy=best) is affecting the Touch Bar: The buttons come back in a 'grayed out' colouring, but they are not affected by touch sensory. Unsure if the following information may be relevant: My behaviour, when I go off, is to close the lid of the computer overnight. I don't leave my computer powered at 100% battery and never let it run down to 0%. (If the Touch Bar has its' own battery, it *should* always be powered.)
Another observation I've made is, that it seems to be most of the time browser (Chrome) - or more specifically YouTube related, but it also once happened when I did not have the browser open.
Usually the touch bar re-appears the next day. The question is, why does this happen, and what options do I have on preventing it, without sacrificing quality of life (for example, without always turning off Mac)?

I’m experiencing an issue with iTerm2’s dropdown window: Sometimes, after extended use when triggered via hotkey, it causes a Space switch, opening in a different Space instead of the current one. The window functions correctly, but it can’t be accessed from any other active Space except for that one. The Space of the window seems to be random -- I’ve been unable to discern the logic behind its choice.
The issue temporarily resolves by closing the dropdown window (closing all tabs) and reopening it, but it recurs intermittently—typically after the system wakes from sleep.
I’ve reviewed and tried the suggestions from the following threads:
• https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/85890/open-iterm-drop-down-console-on-different-screen
I’ve also tested various combinations of Style, Screen, and Space under Preferences > Profiles > Window, without success.
I’m on the latest iTerm2 version and macOS, and this issue has persisted across versions.
I hope to find a solution to the problem, or a way to disable it without having to close the window.

If a repeat question, please forgive me. With age, I am losing the memory to check my calendar every day and therefore just forget some issues. I have searched all the major search engines with the following question and find nothing. **When I reopen the desktop from sleep mode, is there a way to force the calendar to open with it so I can check and recheck what is going on in my life?** It seemed to be a simple idea, and notifications are on, but there seems to be no means of activating the calendar to open from sleep. The computer is never turned off so that is not an issue. I just want the calendar to appear whenever it awakes from sleep no matter how many times in a day.
Thanks in advance

Is this mode the equivalent of the Windows 7 hibernate and or, the hibernate button on the 'Deepsleep' widget/mac app http://www.axoniclabs.com/DeepSleep/ or the other 'Deep Sleep' app's sleep button http://deepsleep.free.fr ?

I've had this issue for about a month. I've done the factory reset and my Mac was fine for a week but is now slowly going back to draining the battery overnight. I've tried everything to fix it and I'm not sure where to go from here. I'm sure if I go to Apple they will tell me it's some sort of bug.
Before I did the factory reset it would run literally all night doing the same set of actions over and over, resulting in a large battery drain - here are the results from that ([(help) 2020 MacPro battery draining overnight](https://www.reddit.com/r/MacOS/comments/ia31l3/help_2020_macpro_battery_draining_overnight/)) .
Some additional information:
1. My Bluetooth is always off
2. I close all apps at night
3. I've gone to Activity Monitor to find out what is preventing sleep but it's just the OS systems, none of the (very few) apps I have installed.
I'm not too flash with computers so I will just post the terminal log results that my Mac repeats all throughout the night. Please help!

Until Apple fixes this (presuming they actually do), I am trying to work around it by telling the Mac not to sleep while plugged in:
However, every time I restart my computer (because I have to unplug it sometimes and then it sleeps and crashes), it forgets this setting and resets it to 5 minutes! Why isn't this setting saved?
I'm using MacOS 10.15.5.

I would like to find what's the processes causing this usage as it don't seem right.
Is it possible to find the logs of CPU usage % on a given time in the past?
Or how to record CPU % usage per process (like as Activity monitor reports) in the future ?

**Update**: I made a
launchd

I have the MacBook Pro (14-inch, 2021) with M1 Pro and connecting it to the ProArt Display PA329CV.
When I'm normally working on my laptop the display works fine. However if the Mac goes to sleep and then I wake it up, I see a notification saying "usb accessories disabled". The odd thing is that the display still works with the MBP, and the battery indicator says fully charged and connected to the power adaptor.
I'm confused as to what the issue is, or whether it's a bug with Mac OS. The ProArt Display PA329CV can connect to the Mac via USB-C with 90W Power Delivery.
If I try to use the USB-C connector simply for the display, and use the mag-safe charger to power the MBP then the monitor doesn't work at all.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Lately I've noticed that I cannot leave my MacBook Pro unplugged since macOS will keep waking it up until the battery is drained. I close the lid, thinking it will go to sleep, but clearly that's not happening. I've tried several including enabling hibernate mode (hibernatemode=25) but even then it wakes up??
I've also tried disabling various other features I found online but nothing seems to help. Today I was checking the output of
pmset -g log
and indeed I see it wakes up every 2 seconds. It's the same few lines every 2 seconds. Based on this log any idea what could be the issue?

and still my Mac completely falls asleep (screen goes black, takes a few seconds to turn back on) after ~30 seconds on the lock screen.
I want to have it set so the screensaver stays on always.

How can I tell whether a drive is asleep?

Is there an application or command-line utility for Mac OS X to query a hard-disk to see if it is 'asleep' or 'awake' *right now*? (i.e. as controlled by Energy Saver /
pmset
disk sleeping preferences). Note that I'm after the *current* sleep state, not just whether the system will put the disk to sleep when its idle.
I have two hard drives in my MacBook Pro, an SSD for the System and a much larger "regular" mechanical drive for various large files I don't often use.
I'd like the physical drive to be put to sleep when not in use, and in general stay asleep unless I'm actually using it. I'd like this to be automatic, rather than mounting and unmounting the drive on a regular basis.
I've set up Energy Saver to put the disk to sleep, but I can't actually tell when the drive is asleep or awake (even pressing my ear against the laptop its hard to tell what's fan noise vs disk noise), so I don't know if I've appropriately divided my files between the two drives.
Is there some way of querying the drive to see if it's asleep, without actually waking it, so I can monitor this to see if its *generally* asleep or not?
I guess an alternate, equivalent question is, *What is the Mac OS X equivalent of the Linux command:*
hdparm -C
**Note:** It need not be an exact, command-line equivalent. Any means of finding out would be useful.
----
Some places I've looked so far, without success:
* The built-in *Disk Utility* and *System Information* applications don't seem to provide any information on sleep/wake state of drives.
* pmset -g
(built-in command ) offers various query functions, but the events seem to be about the *system* sleep events, not disks.
* smartctl -i -n sleep
(smartmontools via MacPorts ) seems to *always* think all drives are asleep for me! (would be interesting to hear if this is true for others)

## tl;dr
Mac Studio Touch ID works for everything except for waking the machine after the keyboard has been switched off. MacBook Pro Touch ID works for waking from sleep. How can this be, and how can I fix it?
---
## Longer version
I have two Macs running Sonoma: a MacBook Pro (M1 2020), and a Mac Studio (M1 Max 2022) with a wireless [Apple Keyboard with Touch ID](https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MK2C3LL/A/magic-keyboard-with-touch-id-and-numeric-keypad-for-mac-models-with-apple-silicon-us-english-white-keys) .
I have biometrics (fingerprints) set up on both machines, and I can use my fingerprint to auto-fill passwords in Safari, use Apple Pay, etc., on both machines. I can also use my fingerprint to unlock the screen if it has been locked, whether due to inactivity or manually, and if the machine has been in sleep mode for a short period of time.
The annoyance I’m facing appears when **the machine has been in sleep mode for some time** – I don’t know exactly how long, but about 15–20 minutes seems to be enough, perhaps less. **Edit:** It seems perhaps it’s not (only?) the length of time, but (also?) whether the keyboard has been switched off. If I put the Mac Studio to sleep, switch the keyboard off and then on again after 20 seconds and wake the computer up, the issue appears.
I put the MacBook Pro to sleep by closing the lid; I put the Mac Studio to sleep by pressing the Touch ID and then Escape.
When I open the MacBook Pro after a period of sleep mode, I can still unlock it using my fingerprint: I see a lock screen with the text “Touch ID or Enter Password” and _no password input field_ (same as if I just lock the screen). Once a week or so, it’ll ask me for my password with a password input field and a text saying “Password required to enable Touch ID” (or words to that effect), but the rest of the time, I just put my finger to the Touch ID and it immediately unlocks.
However, when I open my Mac Studio after a period of sleep and/or after having switched off the keyboard, **it requires a password every time**. I get a lock screen with a password input field and words to the effect of “Enter password to unlock your Mac” – and Touch ID does nothing.
If I hit Escape (to put the computer back in sleep mode) and then wake it up again, Touch ID once again works.
The System Preferences settings for _Lock Screen_ and _Touch ID & Password_ are identical on the two machines (apart from the number of minutes before the display turns off and the extra battery-based one on the MBP) – here from the Mac Studio:
Notably, _Use Touch ID to unlock your Mac_ is **enabled**, and as mentioned, unlocking from the screen saver/locked screen works as expected; it’s only unlocking from sleep mode that doesn’t work.
What may be causing the Mac Studio to ignore this setting only after a period of time in sleep mode or after the keyboard has been switched off? Is there a way to fix it so it works the same as on the MacBook Pro?
