I've got three screens connected to my M1 Mac Studio. In around 60% of screen wake-ups, I get windows from one of my screens repositioned to my primary, as if the secondary was disconnected and reconnected. There is no percievable delay in it coming up, all of the screens turn on roughly at the same time when I press a key/click my mouse. My thinking is that one of the screens does take a little longer to come up (and it's always the same one) behind the scenes, which causes the behaviour. Is there any way to tell my OS to wait for a little longer before it deems the screen to be disconnected? One can imagine how annoying it is to be reorganising windows so frequently.

## tl;dr Mac Studio Touch ID works for everything except for waking the machine after the keyboard has been switched off. MacBook Pro Touch ID works for waking from sleep. How can this be, and how can I fix it? --- ## Longer version I have two Macs running Sonoma: a MacBook Pro (M1 2020), and a Mac Studio (M1 Max 2022) with a wireless [Apple Keyboard with Touch ID](https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MK2C3LL/A/magic-keyboard-with-touch-id-and-numeric-keypad-for-mac-models-with-apple-silicon-us-english-white-keys) . I have biometrics (fingerprints) set up on both machines, and I can use my fingerprint to auto-fill passwords in Safari, use Apple Pay, etc., on both machines. I can also use my fingerprint to unlock the screen if it has been locked, whether due to inactivity or manually, and if the machine has been in sleep mode for a short period of time. The annoyance I’m facing appears when **the machine has been in sleep mode for some time** – I don’t know exactly how long, but about 15–20 minutes seems to be enough, perhaps less. **Edit:** It seems perhaps it’s not (only?) the length of time, but (also?) whether the keyboard has been switched off. If I put the Mac Studio to sleep, switch the keyboard off and then on again after 20 seconds and wake the computer up, the issue appears. I put the MacBook Pro to sleep by closing the lid; I put the Mac Studio to sleep by pressing the Touch ID and then Escape. When I open the MacBook Pro after a period of sleep mode, I can still unlock it using my fingerprint: I see a lock screen with the text “Touch ID or Enter Password” and _no password input field_ (same as if I just lock the screen). Once a week or so, it’ll ask me for my password with a password input field and a text saying “Password required to enable Touch ID” (or words to that effect), but the rest of the time, I just put my finger to the Touch ID and it immediately unlocks. However, when I open my Mac Studio after a period of sleep and/or after having switched off the keyboard, **it requires a password every time**. I get a lock screen with a password input field and words to the effect of “Enter password to unlock your Mac” – and Touch ID does nothing. If I hit Escape (to put the computer back in sleep mode) and then wake it up again, Touch ID once again works. The System Preferences settings for _Lock Screen_ and _Touch ID & Password_ are identical on the two machines (apart from the number of minutes before the display turns off and the extra battery-based one on the MBP) – here from the Mac Studio: Lock Screen settings on Mac Studio Touch ID & Password settings on Mac Studio Notably, _Use Touch ID to unlock your Mac_ is **enabled**, and as mentioned, unlocking from the screen saver/locked screen works as expected; it’s only unlocking from sleep mode that doesn’t work. What may be causing the Mac Studio to ignore this setting only after a period of time in sleep mode or after the keyboard has been switched off? Is there a way to fix it so it works the same as on the MacBook Pro?

I have a new Mac Studio and am having troubles with it and my monitors' HDR. How do I force it to recognize and properly output an HDR signal? Before I got the Mac Studio I had both of these monitors connected to a PC with an Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti which was using them at their full resolution, frame rate, and HDR - so they definitely do actually support it. It connected to the left monitor via DisplayPort and the right via HDMI. My **right monitor** is the ViewSonic VP2785 (4K60, HDR, AdobeRGB). It has DisplayPort and HDMI inputs. When I connect it via HDMI, I do not get an HDR option in Settings. I can set resolution (which is "More Space" i.e. native), color profile (AdobeRGB), refresh rate (60 Hz), and rotation (standard). When I connect it with a USB-C/DP to DisplayPort 1.4 cable, I get and use the same options. However, when connected this way, it frequently doesn't wake up when the system wakes up, so I prefer the HDMI option. HDR never shows up. My **left monitor** is the ViewSonic VP2786 (4K60, HDR, AdobeRGB). It has USB-C/DP, DisplayPort, and HDMI inputs. When I connect it with a USB-C/DP to DisplayPort 1.4 cable, I get and set all the same options as above, but I *do* get an HDR option. However, when I turn it on, I get a very washed out display - not HDR. When playing HDR content, I still get the usual dirty contrast areas where the brightness saturates non-HDR colorspaces and gets clipped. When I connect it with the native USB-C connector (with a thunderbolt-compatible cable) I get the same as above, but as with the previous one it often fails to wake when the system wakes. **How do I get it to recognize and properly output HDR?** How do I figure out why it's not working in the first place? Some other notes: - This behavior was the same on 15.0 and 15.0.1. - When it "fails to wake", OS X agrees and has moved all of my windows/spaces to the other monitor. When I power-cycle the monitor OS X will then move all my windows/spaces back to where they were across the extended displays. I'm trying to figure out why my new Mac Studio has serious issues staying asleep; it frequently wakes up, including waking displays, with any apparent cause. I've had it a week now, and here's some data to show various statuses in the last week (all computer data is from pmset -g log): Timeline Plots There are eight "rows" on this plot. In each row: - The top line (which lines up with the integer, and is only seen at the end of the second row and beginning of third row and once more briefly later) indicates the computer is off. - The next line, black, indicates the system is in "Deep Idle" - The next line, dark blue, indicates the system is in "Dark Wake" - The next line, blue, indicates the system is Awake - The next line, magenta" indicates the displays are on - The next line shows when I was and was not home in the last week (green=home, grey=not). Also, from roughly 10pm to 6am I was asleep. This is included to show there are many activities which are when I'm not even home (and the room with the computer is closed and inaccessible to others/pets). Above each section are symbols indicating the wake events in the system log. - Magenta triangle facing down corresponds to a "Deep Idle" to "Dark Wake" transition as a result of User Activity. - Magenta triangle facing up corresponds to a transition to "Awake" (from either Dark Wake or Deep Idle) as a result of User Activity. - Brown little thingies pointing up and down are the same, but not labeled as being the result of User Activity. The first day after I got it (-6) I believe the very long stretch of wake events was caused by my Yubikey being plugged in (wtf?). However, there are a lot of wake events while I'm not even home and a lot of events while I was home but didn't do anything to wake the computer (which aren't annotated here on the plot because... I didn't record them all, though it's safe to say the ones over night (e.g. -2) were not me sleepwalking and wiggling the mouse). Here's the log around one of the wake/sleep events on 3 October (-2): 2024-10-03 01:39:40 -0600 Assertions PID 418(coreaudiod) Released PreventUserIdleDisplaySleep "com.apple.audio.context3845.preventuseridledisplaysleep" 00:12:48 id:0x0x50000a0bb [System: DeclUser kDisp] 2024-10-03 01:39:40 -0600 Assertions PID 418(coreaudiod) Released PreventUserIdleSystemSleep "com.apple.audio.context3845.preventuseridlesleep" 00:12:48 id:0x0x10000a0ba [System: DeclUser kDisp] 2024-10-03 01:39:40 -0600 Assertions PID 418(coreaudiod) Released PreventUserIdleDisplaySleep "com.apple.audio.context3859.preventuseridledisplaysleep" 00:12:48 id:0x0x50000a0d7 [System: DeclUser kDisp] 2024-10-03 01:39:40 -0600 Assertions PID 418(coreaudiod) Released PreventUserIdleSystemSleep "com.apple.audio.context3859.preventuseridlesleep" 00:12:48 id:0x0x10000a0d6 [System: DeclUser kDisp] 2024-10-03 01:39:40 -0600 Assertions PID 418(coreaudiod) Released PreventUserIdleDisplaySleep "com.apple.audio.context3853.preventuseridledisplaysleep" 00:12:48 id:0x0x50000a0cb [System: DeclUser kDisp] 2024-10-03 01:39:40 -0600 Assertions PID 457(mDNSResponder) Created MaintenanceWake "mDNSResponder:maintenance" 00:00:00 id:0x0xd0000a0e9 [System: DeclUser SRPrevSleep kCPU kDisp] 2024-10-03 01:39:40 -0600 Assertions PID 418(coreaudiod) Released PreventUserIdleSystemSleep "com.apple.audio.context3853.preventuseridlesleep" 00:12:48 id:0x0x10000a0ca [System: DeclUser SRPrevSleep kCPU kDisp] 2024-10-03 01:39:40 -0600 Assertions PID 418(coreaudiod) Released PreventUserIdleDisplaySleep "com.apple.audio.context3858.preventuseridledisplaysleep" 00:12:48 id:0x0x50000a0d5 [System: DeclUser SRPrevSleep kCPU kDisp] 2024-10-03 01:39:40 -0600 Assertions PID 418(coreaudiod) Released PreventUserIdleSystemSleep "com.apple.audio.context3854.preventuseridlesleep" 00:12:48 id:0x0x10000a0cc [System: DeclUser SRPrevSleep kCPU kDisp] 2024-10-03 01:39:40 -0600 Assertions PID 418(coreaudiod) Released PreventUserIdleDisplaySleep "com.apple.audio.context3862.preventuseridledisplaysleep" 00:12:48 id:0x0x50000a0dd [System: DeclUser SRPrevSleep kCPU kDisp] 2024-10-03 01:39:40 -0600 Assertions PID 418(coreaudiod) Released PreventUserIdleSystemSleep "com.apple.audio.context3862.preventuseridlesleep" 00:12:48 id:0x0x10000a0dc [System: DeclUser SRPrevSleep kCPU kDisp] 2024-10-03 01:39:40 -0600 Assertions PID 457(mDNSResponder) Released MaintenanceWake "mDNSResponder:maintenance" 00:00:00 id:0x0xd0000a0e9 [System: DeclUser kDisp] 2024-10-03 01:39:40 -0600 Assertions PID 418(coreaudiod) Released PreventUserIdleDisplaySleep "com.apple.audio.context3820.preventuseridledisplaysleep" 00:13:32 id:0x0x50000a09b [System: DeclUser kDisp] 2024-10-03 01:39:40 -0600 Assertions PID 418(coreaudiod) Released PreventUserIdleSystemSleep "com.apple.audio.context3820.preventuseridlesleep" 00:13:32 id:0x0x10000a09a [System: DeclUser kDisp] 2024-10-03 01:39:40 -0600 Assertions PID 418(coreaudiod) Released PreventUserIdleSystemSleep "com.apple.audio.context3807.preventuseridlesleep" 00:13:32 id:0x0x10000a080 [System: DeclUser kDisp] 2024-10-03 01:39:40 -0600 Assertions PID 418(coreaudiod) Released PreventUserIdleDisplaySleep "com.apple.audio.context3822.preventuseridledisplaysleep" 00:13:31 id:0x0x50000a09f [System: DeclUser kDisp] 2024-10-03 01:39:40 -0600 Assertions PID 418(coreaudiod) Released PreventUserIdleSystemSleep "com.apple.audio.context3822.preventuseridlesleep" 00:13:31 id:0x0x10000a09e [System: DeclUser kDisp] 2024-10-03 01:39:41 -0600 Assertions PID 339(powerd) TurnedOn UserIsActive "com.apple.powermanagement.kernel.useractive AppleUserUSBHostHIDDevice:kIOHIDSystemActivityTickle nxEvent: 0x" 00:00:00 id:0x0x900008ed0 [System: DeclUser kDisp] 2024-10-03 01:39:41 -0600 Assertions PID 394(WindowServer) Created PreventSystemSleep "com.apple.WindowServer.PUIDS" 00:00:00 id:0x0x70000a0ea [System: PrevSleep DeclUser kCPU kDisp] 2024-10-03 01:39:41 -0600 Assertions PID 339(powerd) TurnedOn UserIsActive "com.apple.powermanagement.kernel.useractive AppleUserUSBHostHIDDevice:kIOHIDSystemActivityTickle nxEvent: 0x" 00:00:00 id:0x0x900008ed0 [System: PrevSleep DeclUser kCPU kDisp] 2024-10-03 01:39:41 -0600 Notification Display is turned on 2024-10-03 01:39:41 -0600 Wake Wake from Deep Idle [CDNVA] : due to SMC.OutboxNotEmpty smc.70070000 wifibt DataFrame ARPT/UserActivity Assertion Using AC (Charge:0%) 67 secs 2024-10-03 01:39:41 -0600 WakeDetails DriverReason:SMC.OutboxNotEmpty - I have a new Mac Studio (M2 Max) and I've connected the USB hubs which used to be connected to my PC will all my peripherals. This computer - unlike the Windows one - will now wake up within seconds of going to sleep, every single time; I've had about 400 sleep/wake cycles since yesterday. Every one of these also wakes up both my displays and I'm trying to figure out why. When I run this: pmset -g log | grep ' Wake ' -A10 -B10 I get this output: 2024-09-29 21:59:55 -0600 Assertions PID 503(coreaudiod) Released PreventUserIdleSystemSleep "com.apple.audio.context130993.preventuseridlesleep" 00:03:03 id:0x0x100009dec [System: PrevIdle DeclUser SRPrevSleep kCPU kDisp] 2024-09-29 21:59:55 -0600 Assertions PID 503(coreaudiod) Released PreventUserIdleDisplaySleep "com.apple.audio.context130986.preventuseridledisplaysleep" 00:03:03 id:0x0x500009ddf [System: PrevIdle DeclUser SRPrevSleep kCPU kDisp] 2024-09-29 21:59:55 -0600 Assertions PID 503(coreaudiod) Released PreventUserIdleSystemSleep "com.apple.audio.context130986.preventuseridlesleep" 00:03:03 id:0x0x100009dde [System: PrevIdle DeclUser SRPrevSleep kCPU kDisp] 2024-09-29 21:59:55 -0600 Assertions PID 503(coreaudiod) Released PreventUserIdleDisplaySleep "com.apple.audio.context130996.preventuseridledisplaysleep" 00:03:03 id:0x0x500009df3 [System: PrevIdle DeclUser SRPrevSleep kCPU kDisp] 2024-09-29 21:59:55 -0600 Assertions PID 503(coreaudiod) Released PreventUserIdleSystemSleep "com.apple.audio.context130996.preventuseridlesleep" 00:03:03 id:0x0x100009df2 [System: PrevIdle DeclUser SRPrevSleep kCPU kDisp] 2024-09-29 21:59:56 -0600 Assertions PID 434(powerd) TurnedOn UserIsActive "com.apple.powermanagement.kernel.useractive AppleUserUSBHostHIDDevice:kIOHIDSystemActivityTickle nxEvent: 0x" 00:00:00 id:0x0x9000085d3 [System: PrevIdle DeclUser SRPrevSleep kCPU kDisp] 2024-09-29 21:59:56 -0600 Assertions PID 434(powerd) TurnedOn UserIsActive "com.apple.powermanagement.kernel.useractive AppleUserUSBHostHIDDevice:kIOHIDSystemActivityTickle nxEvent: 0x" 00:00:00 id:0x0x9000085d3 [System: PrevIdle DeclUser SRPrevSleep kCPU kDisp] 2024-09-29 21:59:56 -0600 Assertions PID 434(powerd) TurnedOn UserIsActive "com.apple.powermanagement.kernel.useractive AppleUserUSBHostHIDDevice:kIOHIDSystemActivityTickle nxEvent: 0x" 00:00:00 id:0x0x9000085d3 [System: PrevIdle DeclUser SRPrevSleep kCPU kDisp] 2024-09-29 21:59:56 -0600 Assertions PID 489(WindowServer) Created PreventSystemSleep "com.apple.WindowServer.PUIDS" 00:00:00 id:0x0x70000a27e [System: PrevIdle PrevSleep DeclUser SRPrevSleep kCPU kDisp] 2024-09-29 21:59:56 -0600 Notification Display is turned on 2024-09-29 21:59:56 -0600 Wake Wake from Deep Idle [CDNVA] : due to SMC.OutboxNotEmpty smc.70070000 smc.70170000 smc.70200000 USB2_plug/UserActivity Assertion Using AC (Charge:0%) 81 secs 2024-09-29 21:59:56 -0600 WakeDetails DriverReason:SMC.OutboxNotEmpty - I can't even figure out which device. How do I identify which device USB2_plug/UserActivity is (without systematically unplugging everything and spending hours watching whether or not it wakes up)?

When I come back later to dock my laptop, the SSD is quite warm. Any ideas? I was thinking maybe the SSD is confused and is repeatedly looking for a machine while connected to the display? Surely this is shortening the SSD's life.

I have a mac studio without any display and a 2020 iMac. I would like to use the iMac (or even some other macbook) as the primary display for the mac studio. As far as I searched, the possible option is using either the AirPlay or some other software which does not seem to outperform AirPlay. But it looks like I will run into the following issues since I don't possess a normal display for mac studio in the first place. - When I open the box of mac studio, I cannot even start it to initialize because the iMac screen will not work before setting up the mac studio properly. - Every time I start my mac studio, I guess some setting in it is necessary before the iMac screen works, which is then not possible. Any solutions or suggestions?

The audio is choppy, cuts off, etc. Switching to alternative sound source works, but it's $1500 display and I expect it advertised six-speakers audio system to work. Is there any permanent fix or any fix to this issue yet that would not involved shutting down your system overnight?
