So at the start of my most recent job, when setting up my work MacBook they suggested I use my personal Apple ID and password. I went ahead and did this even though I felt uneasy (a mistake, I know). I used iMessage a bit on the work device (as I know a lot of employees did), but then felt uneasy and removed my iCloud account from the work device. I resigned recently - laptop was shut down immediately. When I look at my devices on my phone or personal Mac, the work laptop does not show up there. It did recently still show up on the "https://www.icloud.com/find/ " page but I just removed it. Now, I have gotten an email from company IT asking me to provide my Apple ID and password so that they can remove Activation Lock. Does this make any sense - why would they still need it give that I've removed my Apple ID from the device? I should say there were many sketchy things about this company so I obviously do not want to provide this information. They are suggesting that I "reset it to a temporary password that you would feel comfortable giving to me and then change it immediately following our call." Also, more generally, if they're going to do something sketchy and violate my privacy - what can I do to protect myself? I have changed my Apple ID password since the time when I originally used it to set up the work device.

Possible to determine iCloud status from serial number?
Title says it. I was wondering if there is any way to determine whether or not a MacBook is tied to an iCloud account from just the serial number. I've been searching for a few days and don't have any leads on this, so any help would be appreciated!

I used to work for a company that provided me a Mac (M1Pro). The company went out of business and let us keep the Mac computers. They told us they would remove all the MDM enrollments so we can freely do whatever we want with it. It's been two years since; a coworker reached out last week telling me he was selling his Mac. After erasing it, he got an Activation Lock screen similar to this: enter image description here Now I'm worried they forgot to remove the MDM from my Mac too, so I'm terrified of erasing it. If I run sudo profiles status -type enrollment I get:
Enrolled via DEP: No
MDM enrollment: No
If I run sudo profiles show -type enrollment I get:
Error fetching Device Enrollment configuration: Client is not DEP enabled.
I also checked in System Information → Profiles and it's empty: enter image description here and System Information → Managed Client and it's also empty: enter image description here Do you think I'm safe to factory reset it?

I'd like to have an airgapped M1 macbook, with some form of backup/disk cloning in case of hardware failures. Is there a way I can completely wipe/restore an M1 MacBook Pro without an internet connection? - disk cloning seems very hard, since [several "hidden" partitions don't get cloned](https://eclecticlight.co/2021/05/28/why-cloning-big-sur-isnt-as-useful-for-an-m1-mac/) - in fact, the internal SSD seems to be an integral part of the boot process (based on the above post); it's soldered-on anyway, so if it fails, it sounds like the whole macbook needs to get replaced So without disk cloning, I think I'm stuck with hitting Apple servers to activate the macbook after an OS/disk wipe. - there's some existing investigation into [caching the activation info for the touch bar](https://blog.eriknicolasgomez.com/2016/11/30/the-untouchables-pt-2-offline-touchbar-activation-with-a-purged-disk/) , which might potentially still apply to M1 - Apple Configurator 2 also permits IPSW restores and a DFU mode, which includes T2 (possibly M1) firmware. But that seems to need a connection to Apple servers. - some versions of T2 sound jailbreak-able, which might lead to some way to activate offline, but I don't believe M1 has the same vulnerability.

Instead, the link is https: //apple-fndmys. us/?id=ODUzMDM=Contacto (without the whitespace) I'm 99.9% sure this is a scam and the thieves are trying to get my info as well, but just wondering if this is real for that 0.01% slim chance.

Brother of my girlfriend got his iPhone 6 back from an acquaintance, and wants to use it since his phone croaked. Problem is that the other guy set it up with his apple ID, and we have no access to that. So basically everything asked for that login and can't be used. I being their resident IT guy searched on Google and found out that you can factory reset the iPhone with iTunes. Some sites say that it also resets the apple ID, an I believed it. Well, it doesn't, so now even the basic stuff can't be used since it asks for an apple ID login right at startup. How can this be removed/bypassed? Phone can't be booted properly, since on startup it asks for Activation lock sign in, with apple ID and password. If there is no way to crack it, I don't mind advising them to get the other guy to unlock it/give password (as far as I understand this is not really an option, but it's not like I care), but I'm a PC/android user, so I would very much appreciate a hacky solution instead :)

Some months ago, an old friend of mine gave me an Iphone 4 that she no longer uses. I don't have much experience with Apple products, so I wasn't expecting to see that the device was locked with her iCloud account. As a way to mitigate this problem, I decided to factory reset using iTunes. But at the end, I was greeted by the activation lock. Before continuing my question, I want to add something: **I know what an activation lock is, how it works, and why it is important. I am not trying bypass it, break it, or gain any profit from this device.** What I am trying to do, and the reason I took this device, is to *recycle* it or *reuse* it somehow. After all, it is a very old device, but it was still functional. Now, let's continue the story. The device locked, asking SIM and password. I tried to contact with my friend to ask the password, but she said she haven't used the device for years and now has no idea about her credential. Which just leaves me hopeless with this nice looking shiny brick. Fast forward to now, this brick was sitting in one of my drawers until I recently discovered it again. As I said before, the device was working flawless, except the crack on its screen. Which leads me to wonder: What can I do with it know? This device is now essentially an e-waste. Or is it? As I said before, I am not trying to gain any profit from this device. Can I use its parts? But a better question: Is there a way to make it got recycled? I think I heard that you can just drop it off at an Apple store. What other ways do you know I can try to recycle/reuse this old Iphone 4? As I said, I don't have much experience with Apple.

However, neither of us know the Apple ID password and we were not able to turn off Find My on the phone. Now it is activation locked and I don't know what to do. I tried following a tutorial for Darkra1n to remove it, but it said I needed Palera1n first. I downloaded Palera1n and ran it, but it keeps getting stuck at "Booting PongoOS". I have tried downloading from Github, from Homebrew, and from the site. I have even tried it on both Apple Silicon and Intel. What should I do? Are there other tools I can use? Not paid, if possible, please. I tried using Blackra1n iCloud Lock removal. but the palera1n mod didn't work (gaster_Darwin.zip could not be found). Please help!

Please restore the phone and install the latest version of IOS and attempt activation again. If the problem persists, please contact customer support." - when I googled it, some solutions would say I need to download the OS from a laptop. But I do not have a laptop, this iPhone and another phone are all I have. Please tell me what to do, I need to access my iPhone urgently. Thank you

I'm a developer and I bought a 2nd hand iPad for development aid in June 2019. It came with the usual Hello setup screen, so I put my email and password and evertything was fine. I was able to use iCloud, was able to debug my app on it, everything was normal. In app purchases was difficult to test because my developer accounts grants me free subscriptions on my own apps, so I created another iCloud account and used on this iPad (and also on an iPhone 5 I have for the same purpose). Again, everything worked fine. Last week, the iPad updated itself to iOS 12.4.6 and, after that I have used the reset function to clear it (I wanted a clean first use experience for some new developments I'm testing). Now it keeps telling me this device is locked and asking for an e-mail/password that is not mine (as it masks the e-mail, I can't even tell who owns it). So, what happened? This iPad was stolen before I bought and I just have luck setupping in the first place? The iPhone Finder doesn't show it on my account (although it appears on my iCloud devices list, but the only action I can do here is to forget it) I'm having trouble understanding if this is a mistake or anything else (if I never could pass the activation, ok, I could do something when I bought it, but the activation kicking in just now is insane!) enter image description here

We recently had an issue where a company owned iPhone was handed to a member of staff, they set it up with a new icloud account and password that they then forgot, they left the company and handed back a device that was working (they knew the passcode, it would boot up) but couldn't have anything installed on it because the icloud account was not known I've been through the process of: * setting up a Miradore MDM account, * setting up an Apple Business Account, * linking ABM to Miradore's MDM server, * installing the Miradore profile on the phone, * recovering the old employee icloud account details after plenty of calls with apple and waiting 16 days for a reset, * logging into their icloud and erasing, then removing the phone from their account (in icloud FindMyIphone), * using Apple Configurator 2 to run a prep on the device and * finally having Apple Business Manager assign the device to the Miradore MDM via its serial number The phone is provisioned in a "stops at Hello setup screen and the user it is given to may set it up as a new iphone/restore it accordingly" way Before giving out the phone again I thought I'd test the process of recovery, which I was hoping would have gotten easier, that happened last time. I would: * pretend to be a forgetful user, * register the phone to a new icloud account, * pretend I forgot the password, * hand it back to the IT dept saying "sorry, here;s your device, I forgot the icloud password i set it up with" I fully expected that they could just open Apple Business Manager, or Miradore (I'm not sure which), hit "wipe" and poof; it becomes a new iphone again ready to be handed to the next user, because Apple know it's owned by the company and they would scrub the icloud details off it/release it from any association with "Forgetful Me" Having hit the option in Miradore to wipe the iphone, it's restarted with an activation lock that is demanding the details of the test user I created.. This isn't how I was hoping it would go; I wanted it to revert to being a brand new iphone with no activation lock. As it is right now it's saying it is activation locked and can only be unlocked by test.user@mycompany.com - exactly the same situation I was in last time with the real forgetful user What have I missed about the whole setup? How can I make things so that the company owns the phone and can wipe any employee logins, data, details, activation locks etc off at any point?

I have the following 3 users on my M1 Macbook Air 2020: * userA: admin created during macOS installation, no AppleID connected * userB: non-admin, its own AppleID connected, FindMy disabled * userC: non-admin, its own AppleID connected, FindMy enabled ---- After I invoke Mark As Lost in Find My iPhone app logged in with UserB's AppleID and rebooting into Activate Mac, I can Erase Mac without providing any user credentials. After Mac is erased, I need to activate it: * either by providing AppleID and password * OR via Use Device Password option ---- Now the question is: **Which of UserA, UserB, UserC device passwords should be accepted for "Use Device Password"?** ---- **Some further details of my setup:** UserC's AppleID is an adult, non-guardian member of family owned by UserB. FileVault enabled during initial MacOS setup; encryption key not associated with any AppleID. Password reset using AppleID is disabled for all users. ---- **My own experiments** gave inconsistent results: * after Mac was locked when UserC logged in, I managed to activate it with UserC's *device* password * after Mac was locked when UserB logged in, I failed to activate it with *any of* UserA, UserB, UserC *device* passwords: error messages varied between: * Activation lock server cannot be reached * The password for this Mac can no longer be used to remove Activation Lock. The password was entered incorrectly too many times Each experiment takes a couple of hours, so I hope there's official docs / third-party research on the topic.
