Some months ago, an old friend of mine gave me an Iphone 4 that she no longer uses. I don't have much experience with Apple products, so I wasn't expecting to see that the device was locked with her iCloud account. As a way to mitigate this problem, I decided to factory reset using iTunes. But at the end, I was greeted by the activation lock.
Before continuing my question, I want to add something: **I know what an activation lock is, how it works, and why it is important. I am not trying bypass it, break it, or gain any profit from this device.**
What I am trying to do, and the reason I took this device, is to *recycle* it or *reuse* it somehow. After all, it is a very old device, but it was still functional.
Now, let's continue the story. The device locked, asking SIM and password. I tried to contact with my friend to ask the password, but she said she haven't used the device for years and now has no idea about her credential. Which just leaves me hopeless with this nice looking shiny brick.
Fast forward to now, this brick was sitting in one of my drawers until I recently discovered it again. As I said before, the device was working flawless, except the crack on its screen. Which leads me to wonder:
What can I do with it know? This device is now essentially an e-waste. Or is it? As I said before, I am not trying to gain any profit from this device. Can I use its parts? But a better question: Is there a way to make it got recycled? I think I heard that you can just drop it off at an Apple store. What other ways do you know I can try to recycle/reuse this old Iphone 4? As I said, I don't have much experience with Apple.

Dead Apple Watch -- security risk?
I have an Apple Watch 1st gen that does not power on anymore. I want to dispose of it. If I just recycle it (at a recycling center), can someone recover data off it? Should I try to destroy it first (maybe by hitting it with a hammer like a hard drive)?

For the longest time, I didn't know how to erase my personal data in the nonvolatile memory, short of physically pulverizing the components on the motherboard. (Living in a tiny highrise apartment does not make that easy.)
Today, I brought it to the Apple Genius Bar. The iPod Touch it's so old that they can't even send it to someone to remove the nonvolatile memory. In the end, I just decided to recycle it. It still bothered me.
After some websearching, found [this webpage](https://www.vice.com/en/article/4xkxbj/smashing-your-cellphone-to-preserve-privacy-makes-it-really-hard-to-recycle) :"The Electronic Products Recycling Association (EPRA) is an industry-led not-for-profit that oversees a network of end-of-life electronics recycling facilities across Canada....is responsible for making sure Canada's electronics recyclers meet strict provincial security, safety and environmental guidelines."
**Does anyone know whether Apple's recycling falls under this program?**
The FAQ at the [Apple Trade In]()[https://www.apple.com/ca/trade-in] page doesn't address the details of due diligence in preventing data recovery.
-------------------
**Background**
I looked at the [Ontario page](https://epraon.ca) for the EPRA, which references [new recycling regulation](https://www.ontario.ca/laws/regulation/r20522) . There's not much there about due diligence in preventing recovery of data. According to the [above article](https://www.vice.com/en/article/4xkxbj/smashing-your-cellphone-to-preserve-privacy-makes-it-really-hard-to-recycle) , the security comes from the fact that phone are "put...into the approved recycling track", presumably meaning that materials are reused rather than the components.

I have a Early 2015 MacBook Pro (Core i5). It got a swollen battery and a line of dead pixel on the display. It has gone through some rough times. I think it can't be traded in but can be recycled from Apple.

I came across this earlier on today as an alternative recycling option:

Is this really a viable option (if a little extreme) & what other recycling methods exist for an old Apple Mac G5 ?

I have a third generation iPod classic from 2005 (20GB). Nothing catastrophic has happened to it, but it has sat in a box in the basement for the past two years. When it went into the box, it worked, but now when I push the power button, nothing happens. When I plug it in to a charger (even when I leave it for an extended period of time), I don't see anything happening.
Is there either
- anything useful I can do with this device or the parts it contains,
- anyone else who could benefit from my donating it to them, or
- a responsible way to dispose of it?

What parts can you scavenge from a nearly 3 year old MacBook Pro?

I have an early 2008 model MacBook Pro (17") that went the way of all the earth a couple of days ago. I haven't diagnosed it fully yet, but it appears that it's the logic board that's gone, and if that truly is the case it's not worth it to spend the money to repair a nearly 3 year old machine (and no, I didn't have AppleCare because, apparently, I'm an idiot).
The question is this: besides the easily-removable RAM chips, what other parts could conceivably be scavenged from it and be realistically useful elsewhere? I haven't disassembled one of these before, I'm wondering how easily the hard drive could be removed and placed in an enclosure, for example (a zapped logic board should, theoretically, leave the HD data intact).
Any other bits you'd keep before sending it to the great recycling depot in the sky?
