I have a 2004-era G5 (PowerMac7,3) and I would like to add an additional SSD or even a HDD but I am unsure with specific models would work with the G5 given that almost all are SATA III-based - are there any recommended models that are known to work with G5s?

Kernel panic invasion on Mac G5
I found my old Mac G5 with Tiger and started it, but forgot the password. Then I tried to crack it using the single-user mode. But then, after I start it, mostly every time, there is a kernel panic. How do I fix it? What do I need to reset? Thanks.

I have a mid-2004 PowerMac G5 that until recently was running fine. It had OS-X 10.3.5 installed. At one point the screen froze, no mouse, no keyboard. I powered it down and back up again. That's when I got the prohibitory symbol on screen.
- I have re-seated the hard drive cables, optical drive cables, the Video card, and the RAM chips.
- I have reset the SMU and the PRAM (repeatedly).
- I have removed the drives and re-formatted them on an external dock, they're fine.
- It will not start in safe mode or recovery mode.
- I was able to start it in Startup Manager, I ran the Apple Hardware Test (from the disc) and all the Hardware tested OK. I was able to start in Single-User mode, however it got stuck on "Still waiting for root device".
- Last resort was to again format the drives, start in Startup Manager, and run the original installation disc. It got partway through installation and locked up again. It will no longer even start the install.
This is where I ran out of talent. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I’ve got Power Mac G5 running Debian 6 in headless mode as a media/home server.
When booting it without an attached screen, the fans ramp up from the idle speed to maximum over a couple of minutes. The red interior warning light is *not* lit.
The server is ping-able the entire time, but startup utilities such as SSH and other are never started; or at least they aren’t reachable.
If a screen is connected until the login-prompt appears, it works just fine. Connecting a screen *after* booting does nothing; it must be connected the entire time.
I do not know, nor am I able to test if this is a problem when running Mac OS X.
Has anyone experienced this before? And if so, is there a solution to this?

I have bought an old iMac G5 (A1145, iSight 20") from a friend and there was no OS installed on it. So now I want to make a clean/new OS X installation. I created an install USB (with Tiger 10.4.6) and boot from it. The Installer went well but there was no HDD to select at [Select a Destination] screen. So I opened Disk Utility (DU) to see what happened and found that DU did not recognize my HDD instantly, I had to wait about 10 minutes or more and finally DU can see it. I tried to erase the disk but it took so long to operate and showed the error message "Disk erase failed: operation timed out". I guessed that the HDD may get damaged so I bought a new SATA HDD (Seagate, 160GB, 7200rpm) and replaced it with the old one. Try to boot from USB again and now it stuck at the grey screen with the Apple logo (no spinning icon).
**Update**: Try to replace the new HDD by the old one again and I can boot into the Installer, but there still no HDD to select either in [Select a Destination] or [Disk Utility].
I have 4 Tiger Install CDs (10.4.11, copied, not original) and have it installed successfully on my iMac G4. But when I try to boot from these CDs on the G5 it just stuck at the gray screen with 🚫 icon and the spinning icon.
Now here's what I want:
- install OS X Tiger (or Leopard) on 20" iMac G5
What I already have:
- an iMac G4 runs Tiger 10.4
- a 17" iMac G5 runs Tiger 10.4
- an Intel Macbook run 10.6
- a Firewire-FireWire cable
- 4 Tiger Install CDs
- an 8GB USB 3 stick with Tiger Installer
Is there anyway to clone MacOS from the iMac G4/G5-17" to the iMacG5-20"? I've heard somewhere about install MacOS to an iMac by booting from a Firewire Disk, but I dont have a one. Can I boot my iMacG5 using G4's CDs or 17"G5's USB via FireWire cable? Please help!
My appreciate! Thanks for your time!

How do I check if a G5 PPC mac has 2 CPUs or not?
When booting it up under Linux (Debian 8) only one CPU seems to be detected:
cat /proc/cpuinfo
processor : 0
cpu : PPC970FX, altivec supported
clock : 1800.000000MHz
revision : 3.0 (pvr 003c 0300)
timebase : 33333333
platform : PowerMac
model : PowerMac9,1
machine : PowerMac9,1
motherboard : PowerMac9,1 MacRISC4 Power Macintosh
detected as : 337 (PowerMac G5)
pmac flags : 00000000
L2 cache : 512K unified
pmac-generation : NewWorld
And the kernel should support SMP:
uname -a
Linux g5 3.16.0-4-powerpc64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.7-ckt20-1+deb8u3 (2016-01-17) ppc64 GNU/Linux
Does an SMP G5 Macs has 2 heat sinks installed - or is it one big one?
Is there perhaps a OpenFirmware command that lists the CPU details?

Has anyone done this that can advise me of the pitfalls? Also, should I consider installing a server-grade hard drive?

I will be traveling for roughly 1 month and, during a normal week, I only intend to use it a couple of times a week. Otherwise, it will sit in my room under a full dust cover, disconnected from a power outlet.
Is there any risk to this? Specifically- could doing this alone damage the battery/system components/screen as it would damage a portable battery powered device such as an iPad or iPhone (where the battery must be charged and discharged at a fairly consistent rate)?

Our trusty 9 year old Mac G5 hit what appears to be a dead end ... the graphics card died and thus no picture, just a black screen. In desperation -- because we're a busy design and education company -- we purchased a brand spanking new 2014 27" iMac. Beautiful machine. That was the easy part. And we bought the necessary cables to speed the transfer of data and applications from Firewire (G5) to Thunderbolt (iMac).
Now here's the migration issue and request for help: In setting up the transfer of data from one machine to another, the procedure says to start Migration Assistant on both machines. The problem with the G5 is that the monitor is dead so there's no way to navigate to the Migration app in the Utilities folder. The Migration Assistant on the iMac therefore cannot locate the G5 and just spins endlessly.
I just learned that on older PPC Macs you could restart the machine and hold the "T" key down to force it into target mode. This may be the answer but wanted to post this in case it doesn't work and there's another solution.
Please advise and thank you in advance.
