I am trying to boot Kali Linux from my late 2020 M1 MacBook Air with macOS Monterey. I tried to boot an x64 Kali image on an M1 system, but encountered the following problem. I used both Balena Etcher and Terminal to create my bootable USB drive and both showed success. So, I shut down my computer and press the power button until the boot menu appears. At this point, I am getting the options: Macintosh HD, Options with the symbol of settings, but no USB drive that I named Kali. After that, I press on the Macintosh HD, because I do not want to recover my Mac. When my computer opens and immediately displays a popup shows with the warning/error message "The disk you attached was not readable by this computer". Any ideas what the problem is and how can I fix it?

iMac 27" - Late 2012 Model# A1419 Customer said they had the motherboard previously swapped out at another repair shop. Displays abnormal picture with lines running vertically and horizontally. It will eventually get stuck on a loading screen at what appears to be the half-way mark. Tried resetting NVRAM or PRAM, booting from USB, starting from internet recovery, safe mode, and recovery mode. I have also swapped out the hard drive with another freshly formatted drive and tried to boot from USB to do a fresh install of a new IOS. I swapped out the RAM and got the same issue. It appears to always end up on the final display picture below. I have tried to enter the verbose mode as well, but it appears to either ignore the command and continue to the last display picture posted below. When selecting WIFI in internet recovery the abnormal display will not be present. Noticed a 3rd party power cord that the customer was using and not sure if that would affect anything. I'll post the fix when or if customer decides to get it repaired. UPDATE: Customer has agreed to have motherboard replaced, so if that solves the issue I will return with an update. enter image description here enter image description here enter image description here

I have a Macbook Pro 16" 2019 that automatically boots after I shut it down. When I shutdown the macbook as per usual (Apple Icon > Shut Down), and close the lid, it will boot up automatically, because I hear the boot sound. It typically happens when I pick it up, or pick up my backpack and it's inside. I have tried forcing it off (pressing and holding the fingerprint reader), but it has no effect, it also boots automatically. I have found https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/334069/macbook-air-starts-up-when-i-close-the-lid and tried the solutions proposed there, but none of them worked. The things I checked are ensuring the power nap feature is off, removing any applications that might have launchd installed (only opengpg), and reinstalling this machine. One of my hypotheses is that when you pick up the device the touchpad registers movement and boots based off of that, but then this must be a hardware malfunction because nobody else at work has the issue. I completely wiped the macbook and installed a vanilla version of Mac OSX. Here is the output of pmset -g log > ~/beforeshutdown.log. Full log here: https://exbin.call-cc.be/r/BepaintWaitresses

I have a MacBook Pro Mid-2009. Unfortunately, I erased my internal drive which led me to OS X Utilities only. When I clicked on *reinstall OS X*, it asked me to sign into my Apple ID. But, it ended with a popup saying, *This item is temporarily unavailable.* So I tried installing Windows 7 on that dead MacBook. I created a bootable USB, plugged it, pressed the power button while holding ⌥ Option key, selected my bootable USB (EFI Boot). After that, I saw an installation screen of Windows 7. All the processes went well. I selected my internal Drive to install Windows. At last, I saw a popup, *Restarts in 10 seconds*. But after the restart my MacBook turned on with a blank white screen. Can anyone please help me to get rid of this problem?

I'm trying to reinstall macOS to a seriously messed up MacBook Pro 2018. Apparently, problems started initially when the Big Sur update failed. The computer's disk has since been erased and all accounts have been lost. The computer shows a question mark folder when it's started. Here's what I've tried so far: 1. Started Mac to startup manager (press Opt in startup). No disks are showing, the only option is internet recovery, which fails. 2. Started Mac in recovery mode and ran First Aid on the disk, which says that the volume appears to be OK. In addition to internal Apple SSD, there is a macOS Base System Disk Image. 3. Also in Recovery Mode, I've run the command bless --info and `bless --getBoot which both return Can't access "efi-boot-device NVRAM variable`. 4. Reset NVRAM and SMC, which had no effect 5. Tried to install macOS from a bootable drive, which failed because the external boot is disallowed in Startup Security Utility. I cannot change the setting because there is no administrator account. 6. Tried to start into single user mode (Cmd+S), to remove /var/db/.AppleSetupDone file in order to run Mac setup again and get new admin account. Logging into single-user mode fails, apparently because there is no startup disk (based on [Unable to enter single user mode (to create Admin account)](https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8448671)) . 7. Tried to set startup volume in recovery mode terminal by running command bless -mount /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/ -setBoot which returns the following:
Can't load /Volumes/Machintosh HD/usr/standalone/i386/apfs.efi
Could not load apfs.efi data from /Volumes/Machintosh HD/usr/standalone/i386/apfs.efi
Any ideas on what I should do? I'm guessing that the first thing I need is to get the startup disk working and create an administrator account. However, that seems to be easier said than done.

I have problems with a windows game on Bootcamp that used to work fine, and now doesn't. So I tried making a bootable bootcamp on a USB. Bootcamp runs on the USB but I would say it doesn't run as well as on my mac's internal HDD. Windows tend to not respond a lot. Also, the 32bit windows game on the USB crashes from memory errors even though I use LargeAddressAware. The game does not crash on my original bootcamp and I can get the game to use over 2GB RAM and it doesn't crash. I think maybe getting my original bootcamp setup on the flash drive might fix my issue. I also want to use this USB to be able to test doing things without it messing up my original bootcamp. I have read that bootcamp can have problems from USB and it's better to clone your existing bootcamp to the USB. Using WintoUSB seems like a great option, but I have Windows 10 Pro, and you can't use WintoUSB with Windows 10 Pro. I have also read that you can create a .CDR image using Disk Utility and then convert it to an .iso; then I guess I can use Rufus maybe to burn it to the usb. But the problem is, the BOOTCAMP uses 100GB but is a 230GB partition. I have more than 100GB available on my mac, but not 230GB and it told me there's not enough space. Also, everything I try takes so long, so I want to know what will work because I'm getting nowhere when trying things myself. Can anyone suggest an easy way to clone BOOTCAMP (with Windows 10 Pro) to a USB? I have access to both Mac and Windows to do this from. Ideally I want it to clone directly so I don't have to store the 100GB or 230GB somewhere other than the USB drive.

I have a macbook Air 128 GB (2017) model. It was working fine, until I decided to reset it. I restarted and went into recovery mode, into Disk Utility and erased the “Macintosh HD” volume group. After that, the disk utility menu showed only the Apple SSD Volume, at which point I restarted the mac. It showed a folder with a question mark instead of the apple logo, which seemed fair since I had deleted the default startup volume. But, the issue was that I wasn’t able to go into the built-in recovery mode after that. Whenever I try to go into recovery mode now, It automatically goes to internet recovery which doesn’t even show a progress bar, just keeps failing and shows the error code 1003f. I tried the following already: 1. Resetting the NVRAM 2. Using an ethernet cable during Internet Recovery. 3. Tried to change my Startup Disk. Also, it shows Internet Recovery as the only option in this mode. I don’t know what to do now, please help.

I've got an eMac that's mostly working (running Tiger, plus a selection of other nice software), but has a broken optical drive. I have a spare USB optical drive lying around, and it works for most purposes, but, according to [this discussion](https://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=1182251) on the Ars Technica OpenForum, most PowerPC Macs (including eMacs) can't boot from USB drives (at least not out of the box and without a LOT of tinkering and swearing), although they _can_ boot from FireWire drives. Just in case I ever have to reinstall Mac OS X on the eMac, here's my question: if I plug a USB-to-FireWire adapter into one of the eMac's FireWire ports, and plug the USB optical drive into that, will the eMac be able to boot from said optical drive, or will I have to shell out for a FireWire optical drive?

After updating my Mac to Big Sur, every single 11.x update of Mac OS (including the update to Big Sur itself, as well as the latest to 11.4) ends up with restarting my Mac to Recovery mode, that is, I am presented with the following panel: macOS Recovery (This is from my latest upgrade to 11.4 – I took a picture, because the usual shortcuts to take a screenshot don't work while in Recovery mode.) I found out that I don't need to go ahead with logging in here, and I can just restart my Mac and the update will continue successfully, eventually showing the regular user login fields. Every update has been eventually successful, but I need to take this extra step of restarting in the middle of the update when I am shown the Recovery mode options, which is annoying, because it assumes a manual step for the update to finish. After the manual restart, I still see the progress bar of the update starting from empty and progressing. This was not happening on previous macOS versions. I am afraid that at some point the underlying issue will manifest itself and some future update will bork my computer. Why does updating macOS Big Sur end up in Recovery mode? EDIT: this is still an issue on MacOS 12.5.1, MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports)

The software installer creates a system LaunchDaemon found under /Library/LaunchDaemons called com.pritunl.service.plist Unfortunately this service remains active when I log out from the user profile it's intended for, causing the VPN connection to also remain active for different user accounts. What I would like to do is to remove this service from the /system/ and add it as a /user/username startup service. My intention is for the service to be started whenever I log in with the specific user and for it to stop whenever the user is logged out. What I've tried to do so far is to unload the system service, remove the .plist from the system directory /Library/LaunchDaemons and to move it to the user directory ~/Library/LaunchAgents after which I attempted loading and registering it for the specific user account. I've not yet succeeded in performing these steps correctly as the user account in question does not have root access.

Reference material I've used: https://rakhesh.com/mac/macos-launchctl-commands/ When trying to learn more about LimitLoadToSessionType I've only managed to find this archived older documentation. https://developer.apple.com/library/archive/technotes/tn2083/_index.html Trying to find it on the current documentation page hasn't resulted in what I'm looking for. https://developer.apple.com/search/?q=LimitLoadToSessionType I've found this excellent post detailing a lot of related subjects. https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/366281/launchd-confusion-on-semantics-of-bootstrap-and-bootout-etc-after-reading-manu

He had updated Bootcamp Windows 7 to Windows 10. Now I want to use it for macOS but I can't access the Mac partition because it doesn't exist on that machine. I tried all the Command+R, Command+Option+R key combinations, but nothing worked. The Bootcamp assistant software is also missing. Also tried to use a USB stick to boot from but wasn't successful. :( The disk partitions currently looks like this: My Disk's Current partitions How can I restore macOS function while preserving my windows installation?

We have a 2018 MBP business laptop with an SSD that's died. The support company have declared it is dead and recommended recycling it. I'd very much like to get it booting from an external SSH. FYI: The machine does NOT allow booting from external drives, but doesn't have a firmware password set. Things I've tried: 1) When I attempt to access Startup Security Utility with no external SSD attached, I get the no admin accounts exist message. 2) I've entered Recovery Mode with a known-good OS on an external SSD, and can access Startup Security Utility, and can select one of the Admin accounts on that external SSD OS, but entering the passwords for these accounts does nothing. 3) As a punt, I also tried to enter the admin account pass for the dead Mac, even though the selectable username was wrong, but no dice. 4) In an attempt to be hacky about it, I booted from the external SSD on a different MBP, and added an admin account with the same username and password that I know was on the dead Mac, then attempted No. 2 again, and this time I can select the correct username, but entering the correct password fails. So I'm assuming there's more than just a user/password combo stored in the T2 (or wherever). Any other ideas? Is there any hope of getting this thing usable even for my kid? Cheers!

My Mac is on BigSur and I am using Carbon Copy Cloner to create a one on one disk which is bootable also. I have this setup running for years now and never noticed any problems – also on BigSur it worked. Now my Backup Drive crashed and I bought a new HDD. I have exactly build this HDD (one 1 TB partition for CCC for the one on one copy and another 1 TB partition for TimeMachine). But two major problems: The clone partition is the one that get booted after a restart – I also cannot choose another startup disk from system preferences since I only can see the actual booted one. So when I had booted with system SSD only this disk is shown and when I booted from the backup disk only this ons is shown. But the mac should boot from the internal disk by default, what could happened here? The Drive was always plugged in in a Thunderbolt 3 Dock. I also recently switched to an eGPU (Razer Core X Chroma) which now operates as my dock where the HDD is attached. But I think the problem occurred since the new replacement disk. Also when I plug in that drive directly on my macbook this drive get booted on restart. Another issue is that the TimeMachine partition of the disk get mountet sporadically and is making intense work but not running a time machine backup. I tried to disable the volume on spotlight which presents an error (time machine backup cannot be excluded since they are always excluded – something like that) but disabled it by command line with sudo mdutil -i off "/Volumes/TimeMachine". Now I think its better... Maybe you have an idea. Thanks! **-- Update** The regular automatic TimeMachine backup is disabled – I have an own task that runs every hour that mounts the volume, do the TM backup and unmount it. That also worked for years now.

That must the weirdest title you've read in a long time. I have a MacBook Pro Mid 2012, I installed Windows 7 with Bootcamp and all was working fine. Last night I installed Kali Linux with a bootable USB, and during the installation I checked something like "master boot record" or something like that, not too sure. Now when I'm greeted with the boot menu in mac thanks to rEFInd and select Windows, this message comes on : > No bootable device -- Insert boot disk and press any key I've read online this has something to do with GRUB, but don't know how to proceed. Let me know if you need any more info, thanks.

Okay all, I think I messed up really big time. Was so excited and delighted today to see my brand spanking new MacBook Air arrive (running Catalina). Everything was wokring great; I started Migration Assistant to get it migrating over from my old computer and, after a little while for the preliminaries, it said it was going to be 6.5 hours. So I thought let's not do this right now, so I can still use the old computer, and cancelled it. That was my first mistake. It wouldn't let me go back to the original state of Migration Assistant; the users were already on the new computer. Okay, fine, I have to go into Utilities to find Migration Assistant on the new computer. But then when Migration Assistant did start up again, it would keep freezing in the early stages, stalled and not progressing - never even got to the part where it estimated time remaining. It did this in multiple ways, whether I was connected through WiFi or Ethernet, direct from the old Mac or through my Time Capsule. So I figured I wanted to start clean. And this appears to be where I made the REALLY big mistake. I thought "well, I'll just wipe the data so I can start clean, right?" I tried to followed instructions for a factory reset: went into Recovery Mode (cmd-R), entered Disk Utility, deleted the Macintosh HD-Data partition. I thought that what I was supposed to do next was delete the Macintosh HD partition too. But it wouldn't let me do that because it was in use. I also tried to reinstall the US, and it wouldn't let me do that either (also because it was in use). Okay, I thought, I'll just restart and see what happens. And now my brand new $1800 computer is completely bricked. The Apple logo appears, followed briefly by the start of the progress bar - and then I hear this whooshing sound, like ocean surf or a heavy breath, and it turns back off again... and then the Apple logo appears again and the same thing happened. Over and over on an endless cycle, just Apple and whoosh. I can sometimes get it to turn off by holding the power button, but turning it back on just gives me the endless cycle and whooshing again; I can't get into Recovery mode. In the old days I would have tried sticking a paper clip in or some other option for a hard reboot, but there's nowhere to do that. Help! How can I get back to a brand-new computer with the old data smoothly migrated?
