After installing Windows on an external drive, it crashes when connecting via a SATA case. (Crashes when booting Windows, Linux, and macOS). The installation was based on the answer from [Drivers not working on Windows 10 installed (CLI process) on external SSD running on MacBook Air 2018](https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/384355/drivers-not-working-on-windows-10-installed-cli-process-on-external-ssd-runnin/384447#384447) . However, the exact procedure, including additional steps taken, is documented in a secret gist on GitHub.
I have tried multiple different cables and cases. I am using an Imac18,3. I have tried plugging the SATA case into the mac via USB-C to USB-C and USB-A to USB-C. All of these cables should allow data transfer.
The Cable that it works with is a USB-A to SATA cable.
The device crashes when plugging the drive in from boot. (Only if booting from that drive though)
Does anyone know why this happens? Is there a way to fix it?

I have got a problem with booting into Windows 10 after changing Superdrive to SSD - "**No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key**".
It works if i leave only old hard drive, removing the new SSD, the Windows boots well.
The boot option screen can detect old MacOS, new MacOS and the partition with Windows on old HD.
The primary OS is on SSD **/dev/disk0** and the Windows in on HD **/dev/disk1s4**.

I have a 2 TB external SSD backup drive using Time Machine with my iMac. It worked great for 6 years, doing regular backups of my iMac hard drive.
Suddenly it has stopped doing backups, and, in fact, the disk is now "read only". I cannot even delete folders or any files from the external drive. I noticed that 1.83 TB are used on the drive, with just 166.03 GB "available". I would like to not lose the files that I have backed up over these years, if possible.
Is there any way that I can delete folders from this problematic external drive so that more space is available, possibly allowing me to access everything on the drive? Or is it necessary to erase everything on the drive and start over?

It seems like I’ve used up all space on my MBP, and when I rebooted it it became corrupted/inoperable (when I go into disk utilities, Macintosh HD is “unmounted”, and when I press “mount”, nothing happens. On internet recovery, the same thing gives me “Alert: couldn’t mount disk”. Clicking “Repair” gives me “Alert: Partition map repair failed while adjusting structures to fit current whole disk size.”)
I was wondering if it’s possible to recover any data from it? I have some sensitive documents that haven’t backed up due to poor internet connection. On disk utility it says the drive could not be mounted and I can’t find the drive via the terminal.
Thank you!

I have a macbook Air 128 GB (2017) model. It was working fine, until I decided to reset it. I restarted and went into recovery mode, into Disk Utility and erased the “Macintosh HD” volume group. After that, the disk utility menu showed only the Apple SSD Volume, at which point I restarted the mac. It showed a folder with a question mark instead of the apple logo, which seemed fair since I had deleted the default startup volume. But, the issue was that I wasn’t able to go into the built-in recovery mode after that. Whenever I try to go into recovery mode now, It automatically goes to internet recovery which doesn’t even show a progress bar, just keeps failing and shows the error code 1003f.
I tried the following already:
1. Resetting the NVRAM
2. Using an ethernet cable during Internet Recovery.
3. Tried to change my Startup Disk. Also, it shows Internet Recovery as the only option in this mode.
I don’t know what to do now, please help.

After a reboot I am unable to mount an external USB-C SSD with Catalina 10.15.5
Disk Utility is recognizing the disk, I can see a "**disk3**" container with my APFS volume , but once I try to activate it I get a *com.apple.DiskManagement.disenter error 49218*
When trying a diskutil repair I get :
Started file system repair on disk3s1 1TB - SSD
Repairing file system
Volume is already unmounted
Performing fsck_apfs -y -x /dev/rdisk3s1
Checking the container superblock
Checking the space manager
error: (oid 0xa550) cib: invalid o_cksum (0x0)
error: failed to read spaceman cib 0xa550
Space manager is invalid
The volume /dev/rdisk3s1 could not be verified completely
File system check exit code is 0
Restoring the original state found as unmounted
Finished file system repair on disk3s1 1TB - SSD
But disk still cannot be activated afterwards.
I already tried disk utility from recovery mode, no success... Also tried to connect the disk with another USB-C cable with no success...
The disk is 4 months old and worked initially. What are my data recovery options?

We have a 2018 MBP business laptop with an SSD that's died. The support company have declared it is dead and recommended recycling it. I'd very much like to get it booting from an external SSH. FYI: The machine does NOT allow booting from external drives, but doesn't have a firmware password set.
Things I've tried:
1) When I attempt to access Startup Security Utility with no external SSD attached, I get the no admin accounts exist message.
2) I've entered Recovery Mode with a known-good OS on an external SSD, and can access Startup Security Utility, and can select one of the Admin accounts on that external SSD OS, but entering the passwords for these accounts does nothing.
3) As a punt, I also tried to enter the admin account pass for the dead Mac, even though the selectable username was wrong, but no dice.
4) In an attempt to be hacky about it, I booted from the external SSD on a different MBP, and added an admin account with the same username and password that I know was on the dead Mac, then attempted No. 2 again, and this time I can select the correct username, but entering the correct password fails. So I'm assuming there's more than just a user/password combo stored in the T2 (or wherever).
Any other ideas? Is there any hope of getting this thing usable even for my kid?
Cheers!

I'm having trouble updating Monterey for the last 2 updates. When I do it restarts in recovery saying:
"Your computer started up in Recovery because a failure occurred during installation. An error occurred migrating user data during an install. Reinstall macOS to resolve the issue".
Reinstall macOS does not solve the issue. The only way I found to fix the issue (update before this one) is by wiping my macOS partition clean and then reinstall the macOS. Unfortunately, because I have a third party SSD on my MBP, that would not work unless I replaced the SSD with an official Apple SSD, upgrade to the latest version, then swap it back with my third party SSD, do a clean install, and restore my backups. Needless to say, this is super painful and I'd really rather not do that.
Has anyone had the same problem?

All data has been retrieved.
Is it worth getting it looked at professionally?

Basically I am trying to install a brand new Aura Pro X2 480gb SSD into a Macbook Air 2014, the original apple SSD has failed and is not seen by the Macbook Air. I know the Aura Pro X2 requires High Sierra as the previous system so the firmware updates via the Macbook Air.
But for some reason whenever I try to install High Sierra using a bootable installer via the Macbook Air, I get an error message stating that the computer is missing firmware partition on any device. I try to install High Sierra on to, been it a USB key or an external hard drive etc.
Is there anyway I can get High Sierra installed via a USB or external hard drive so the firmware partition updates, so I can then see the new Auro Pro X2 480gb SSD and install new system on to it?
I've tried formatting USB keys and hard drives in different ways but keep getting the missing firmware partition message on anything I do.
I have an old 2008 Mac Pro and also a 2011 Mac mini, if those can be useful in anyway to solving this issue I have.

To do it, I installed Paragon. I rebooted my MacBook. I checked if the driver was actived, and it was. So I went to Disk Utilty, but I have no choice to format to NTFS. Only Mac OS Extended is proposed.
I tried with Tuxera too. But same result, it didn't show the NTFS option.
Do you know any other way to format a SSD or a HDD from Mac OS Extended to NTFS ?

I was watching videos from my SSD external drive on my Mac and the machine suddenly died by low battery. When turned on my SSD doesn't show up literally anywhere except on the USB device tree which is written "Portable SSD".
It does not appears on my camera which is connected by USBc-USBc nor iPad or Windows computer that I tried after.
I've tried several possible solutions based on people with similar issues.
I did try different cables, different devices, restart normal, in Safe Mode, Disk Utility does not show up as well, even clicking on "Show all devices", nor in Diskutil List on Terminal(I don't see it there)... I don't know what else to do. There are really important stuffs in there from work and it's been a stressful situation to deal with.
If anybody know any info or any other troubleshoot I can try, I appreciate any help! Thank you!

I have no external drives hardwired to this laptop, if it matters.
I saw this after unlocking my Mac. Right before that, I woke it up by typing on my external keyboard. This laptop is usually docked and connected to KVM by an IOGEAR GCS62DP KVM switch.

I want to avoid using a third-party software, so I tried to use **Disk Utility** with the "restore" feature.
How should I proceed? How should I format the SSD before?
I tried formatting the SSD under APFS. Then I launched a restore operation from my HDD (internal) to SSD (external). But it consistently fails with *"OSStatus error 28"*, saying *"could not restore - no free space on the device"*, *"the operation could not be completed"*, *"the operation failed"*, *"the destination does not have enough space"*.
I don't understand because both disks are supposed to have the same capacity.

Help needed for SSD Installation on an Mid-2012 MacBook Pro with BootCamp

I have a 13-inch Mid-2012 MacBook Pro, and I want to switch over from the HDD (1 TB) to SSD (1 TB). I am concerned about the following things:
1. I have BootCamp installed, so when I install the SSD, will I be able to get all the files from both BootCamp and MacOS as they are right now?
2. I have installed a Patched version of Big Sur on my MacBook Pro, and I have had to enter the following commands (only if I reset the NVRAM) or else it will not allow me to boot up (the crossed out circle sign):
> 1. nvram boot-args="-no_compat_check"
> 2. nvram csr-active-config=%7f%08%00%00
Will this create further problems? Or would I be able to boot up without any issues?

A couple days ago my MacBook, an early 2016, 12-inch, Retina model had a hard freeze, rainbow wheel and screen frozen.
After a forced restart holding down the power button I was able to get to the login screen but my password would not work.
After additional restarts I was greeted with the

I tried it number of times, making sure I was not doing caps lock or anything of that nature. I was eventually able to get it running by installing macOS Mojave to an external drive however...
The internal hard drive does now show up in anything: Disk Utility
, diskutil list
,System Information App > Storage
, Recovery Mode / Only Recovery Mode
etc.
The HDD on these models is soldered to the board so I cannot remove it for further testing.
Does this mean that my SSD is totally done for? Are there any other ways I can access it and test it?
Below is my output from diskutil
and some screen shots from Recovery Mode
EDIT: The 319GB Drive is my external WD Hard Drive I am booted from, the CD sized drive is one of those built in partition on an external drive where the recovery software they bundle is stored.
The Internal Drive is not showing up at all and should be 512 MB.
Find below the system_profiler
