I've numbered each point – as there are a lot – in the hope it makes it easier to reply or ask me for further info. Thanks!
1. The Problem
2. What I've Tried So Far...
3. Next Steps?
4. Screenshots
The Problem
--------------
2. 2018 MBP Will not boot using Internet Recovery, nor any other type of Recovery thus far.
3. Get variety of errors - 1008f, 2300f, 2100f.
4. 2018 MBP is running Big Sur (*possibly* a recent beta version, icr)
5. Have updated 2011 iMac to **High Sierra 10.13.6**. It's moving slowly, but it's definitely moving. It's a 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3, plenty of free disk space - 1.76TB.
6. I have *most* important stuff on the MBP backed up, but concerned due to medical reasons that vital things may not have been backed up in recent times - my eye has been off the ball somewhat...
7. I really want to access the Data on the MBP if I *possibly* can.
8. I fear the Logic Board *might* be on it's way, but hope I can salvage something.
What I've Tried Already
--------------------------
9. Updated iMac to HS, to create **bootable installer of High Sierra** using Terminal commands. It's Extended Volume, not AFPS. Can make another in AFPS if it will remotely help.
10. MBP did not boot to it. Still brings up Network prompt which ultimately seems to cause the fail each time.
11. MBP *appears* to process connecting the MBP to WiFi Network each time, but then produces variety of error codes at the end, even when using bootable installer and Option key.
12 Have even put entire High Sierra OS on external drive, endeavouring to effectively use external drive as a Mac Mini with ailing MBP just the screen. Nope. Still wants to connect to to Network (this is for the Firmware, afaik?)
13. Have today connected MBP to iMac using Thunderbolt 3 cable and USB-C to Thunderbolt adaptor.
14. Endeavouring to boot using **Target Disk Mode**.
15. Can see **MBP Macintosh HD - Data** in Disk Utility, but cannot perform **First Aid**, nor **Mount** it. **IMAGE BELOW**
16. Also have a Drive titled **Update** in externals, which seems to show the Data and ?(Big Sur beta update?) maybe? (I haven't called it Update, and I'm not quite sure what it is) **IMAGE BELOW**
17. Tried Terminal commands to Verify **Data**, getting a variety of **Permission Denied** errors. **IMAGE BELOW**
18. Tried \\\ diskutil verifyDisk disk2 \\\ which gives:
*Unable to verify this whole disk: A GUID Partition Table (GPT) partitioning scheme is required (-69773)*
19. Tried \\\ diskutil verifyDisk disk2s1 \\\ (that's the volume(?) with the data on) which gives:
*"A whole disk must be specified"*
20.
21. Downloaded iBoysoft to try and recover data.
22. It can see the Data, but there's a padlock on the Drive and it's asking: *"Please enter the password of your encrypted APFS partition"* **IMAGE BELOW**
23. Wondering if this is a FireVault thing? I'm not sure if it's switched on, on the MBP or not. If it is, I have absolutely no idea what the **encrypted partition password** is, nor where I'd find such information.
24. Apparently, I can run iBoysoft Data Recovery in *macOS Recovery mode*.
25. I'm not sure if this will be complicated because I am also using **Target Disk Mode**, rather than running iBoysoft directly on the affected MBP, because I can't. A search of the iBoysoft FAQs fails to offer an answer to this query.
Next Steps
----------
26. Is there any point in creating *another* **Bootable Installer**, this time as APFS, rather than Extended Volume?
27. Where can I find the **encrypted APFS password** info? (I'm not convinced I have one, but it may have switched on by default?) I am a devil for recording passwords so if I was aware this existed, I absolutely would have made a note of it. What would it look like format-wise?
28. And where would I enter it for the Disk Utility or Terminal to be able to access *'MBP Macintosh HD - Data'*?
29. Would entering the command prompt \\\ sudo Fsck_APFS /dev/disk2s1 \\\ do anything helpful?
30. I have a 2019 MBP running Big Sur which thoughtfully simultaneously fell over. This happened while I was awaiting delivery of the super-fast Thunderbolt 3 cable to do the data transfer. It has refused to switch on since, so I am pretty much stuck with the 2011 iMac as rescuer for now. (And yes, I've tried all the usual suspects NVRAM, SMC on the dead second MBP etc)
I am an absolute novice at all of this, so please speak ** s l o w l y ** to me in simple terms. This is my first post and I'm doing my best...

Data recovery on MBP 15’s SSD corrupted drive?

It seems like I’ve used up all space on my MBP, and when I rebooted it it became corrupted/inoperable (when I go into disk utilities, Macintosh HD is “unmounted”, and when I press “mount”, nothing happens. On internet recovery, the same thing gives me “Alert: couldn’t mount disk”. Clicking “Repair” gives me “Alert: Partition map repair failed while adjusting structures to fit current whole disk size.”)
I was wondering if it’s possible to recover any data from it? I have some sensitive documents that haven’t backed up due to poor internet connection. On disk utility it says the drive could not be mounted and I can’t find the drive via the terminal.
Thank you!

I know there have been various questions asked on this topic before, but I haven't seen a question that focused specifically on whether data from a factory reset iPhone could be recovered if **a passcode** was not used.
Apple states on their website "Setting a passcode also **turns on data protection**, which encrypts your iPhone data with 256-bit AES encryption". (https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/iphone/iph14a867ae/ios)
Therefore, if someone decided to not set a passcode on their iPhone and then reset their iPhone at a later date, would the data on their phone then be unencrypted and thus recoverable by a third party?

One of my laptops (MacBook pro with apple silicon) went kaput recently, and I'm trying to back up the files before I reinstall the OS. I can get it to enter disk sharing mode, but I can't get it to show up in the finder of the other mac (2019 MacBook Pro). The "Network" folder is just empty. I've tried checking finder settings to make sure network stuff is visible, but no dice. And the plist files discussed in https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/148649/shared-devices-not-appearing-in-network don't seem to exist on my version of macOS.
I have the same problem when connecting to my partner's *really* old mac laptop (like 8 years old), but I was briefly able to connect via someone else's mac (don't know what version it was, didn't have time to go into depth or do a proper backup and now they're not around) and access files on my broken computer, so I think the issue exists with the other computers?
What I'm trying to do is [Transfer files between a Mac with Apple silicon and another Mac](https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/transfer-files-a-mac-apple-silicon-mchlb37e8ca7/mac) .

Notice that the first 25 lines are the same (the names and the hex numbers are the only differences). Therefore there is no error message telling why it failed..
Do you have any idea of the health of this USB stick according to the logs ? Is it only the flash part which is dead (because my computer and the stick seems to manage to talk in USB) ? Do you have any idea of how to recover it (maybe with a physical intervention) ?

I found a thread on apple saying "*The partition map type doesn't really make any difference for non bootable volumes*", although i don't get any of these problems when using Master Boot Record & ExFAT.
None of the files are more than a couple years old, so i don't think there should be any compatibility issues, and none of the files were corrupted when I copied them to the drive. I have had this same problem with other drives, and they were perfectly usable after reformatting, although this involved erasing files.
My question is: **Is there a way to recover my files?** The file-sizes still display that the files are there. Is there a way to save these files and make them readable?
...Also, if it makes any difference, I am using El Capitan(for dev purposes)
> **Update------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------(04/Oct/2017)**
I did a hexdump
for some of the files in question. my output was something like this:
0000000 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
*
0000370 00 00 00 00
0000374
what does this mean? do you think a recovery app could even help me here?
here are some threads that are perhaps related:
...Also could this possibly be related to SIP? I first noticed this problem around when i first upgraded to El Capitan.
Or perhaps there is something else going on? I have recently been experimenting with windows and various forms of linux, and have been moving files around with thumb drives. Perhaps I plugged one in to the wrong computer and corrupted all the files?
Whatever the cause, I'm wondering if the files might still be recoverable? Is hexdump
a good way to diagnose recoverability? **Would buying a recover app just be a waste of $100?**

I take pictures with Microsoft Lens every day, in "DOCUMENTS" mode. Over time, it happened quite a few times that I pressed the menu item "ACTIONS" or swiped to the right to get there, without ever wanting to get there at all (I did not even know what it is for, only later I understood that it is for example for text extraction), which then shows:
> Switching to Actions mode will discard current images
>
> - Discard all media
>
> - Cancel
I was always careful to press "Cancel" here, but today, I took pictures while doing two other things at the same time for the picture, and when I saw the menu again, I was in a haste not to hit the wrong button now while holding two other things and hit the "Cancel" button quickly, but touched the "Discard all media" by some millimeter and now got all of my images discarded = deleted. I uploaded my images over time as you cannot take more than 100 pictures, so that I lost only my session of 50 images while the rest is uploaded. But losing those is already a cost of working time and the "My Scans" folder of the app is empty now as well, which may have been needed once in a while to see the uploaded images without entering the cloud.
Now I wonder whether there is a way get back the discarded images.
Perhaps, they are still saved somewhere in the iPhone Fotos app. The Microsoft Lens App's images are not saved in the Images folder of the iPhone, therefore they seem to be saved inside the app.
Can I redact the deletion of images inside the Microsoft Lens App? Or is there a way to recover them from outside the app?

I need to recover data from a Samsung MZ-JPV5120/0A6 SSD (12+16-pin PCIe NVMe, 512GB) from a Late 2015 iMac. It’s not detected despite multiple hardware attempts. Details:
SSD: Apple proprietary 12+16-pin PCIe NVMe, 24-25mm x 89-90mm.
Tried:
1. ENC2MAC-J31 enclosure (USB-C, JMB586A chipset) – USB recognized, SSD not detected.
2. "12+16-pin to M.2" adapter + MAIWO K3016SD docking station (JMS581LT chipset, 5V/3A) – loose fit, SSD not detected.
Questions
1. Has anyone accessed this SSD (MZ-JPV5120/0A6)? What hardware worked?
2. What adapter/enclosure supports Apple’s 12+16-pin PCIe NVMe?
3. Do JMS581LT/JMB586A chipsets work with this SSD? If not, which chipset does?
4. Could loose contact be the issue? Any fixes?
Goal is to read the data, period. Hardware recs or proven methods appreciated.

Out of the blue, my iMac (late 2010, running El Capitan) started refusing to boot. The progress bar would take forever to reach 100%, and then it would just stop there once it reached it; all the while the fan running loudly.
I am able to boot into Recovery Mode, and I can even run Disk Utility (it doesn't detect any problems.) However, when I attempt to reinstall the OS, it tells me:
> This disk has S.M.A.R.T. errors.
>
> This disk has a hardware problem that can't be repaired. Back up as much of the data as possible and replace the disk.
I have an outdated Time Machine backup, made before I upgraded from Mountain Lion to El Capitan. Most of the data in the backup is the same, but there are a few GBs of new files I'd like to backup as well.
Since Disk Utility tells me everything is okay, am I able to somehow mount an external, and backup files? Possibly through Terminal? And If I were to use the drive with the old Time Machine backup on it, would I have to delete the backup before writing new data to the drive?
**I'm not very computer savvy, but I can manage my way through Terminal with a lot of instruction. So please, try to answer in terms I will understand. Thanks.**

I forgot my Apple MacBook Pro M2 password yesterday (running on MacOS Sonama) and after multiple tries, I tried to recover using recovery options provided by apple. After following all the steps loging in using my Apple ID.
In the reset password process, after I logged in using my Apple ID, it suddenly shows error “There was an error communicating with iCloud”. It happens right after the step where it tries to load FileVault recovery key.
I do have my FileVault recovery key and have all other passwords.
After contacting with Apple support and have a long conversation and they re-tried all the steps, they simply said: “well, you can only remove everything in your mac, we can’t help you more”
I even tried doing it using the terminal, and I can see a bunch of error printing in the terminal. Here I attached screenshot:
Error above clearly indicates:
NSSoftLinking - The Shortcut framework’s library couldn’t be loaded from (null).
The function ‘SCTInitShortcut’ can’t be found in the Shortcut framework.
AOSKit: ERROR: CFBundleCreate failed (AppleAccount)
ERROR: Failed to load AppleAccount
and continues:
Missing ep for BTMM
Any idea? It seems I can’t try more passwords as when I try to enter new passwords it says “Account is locked”.
I can’t simply lose my data, it’s my PhD work/codes, and I don’t have backup. Can I do anything with the FileVault recovery key that I have? I don’t mind reinstall everything, but even reinstalling asks for password, which now seems locked.

How do I recover save progress on my games after resetting my iPad?
I reset my iPad, and it resulted in me losing all my save progress on the games *Plants vs. Zombies 2* and *Pokémon GO*. I was hoping it would resolve itself automatically over time, but it hasn't. Is there a way to recover my save progress on these games after resetting my iPad?

But the last time I use it, I modified the path file of Firefox to download stuff directly into it. But Veracrypt, for no reason, force dismount. And now, when I plug it, the antivirus ask me to pass a scan on it, but I can't see it in my Home PC, and Veracrypt won't recognize it. When I scan it with "detail disk" with diskpart, here's the detail. (I know it's in french, sorry about that)

I know when the disc is encrypt, windows ask me to format it, but when decrypt on an other letter, it's fine. How could I fix that?

This happened during my efforts of trying to fix my other computer. (See here for more). I was flashing a ISO image with balenaEtcher . Then I closed the lid of my laptop and left for 20 minutes. Strangely, after I come back, it was stuck, I couldn't cancel or anything. I quitted it and now I can't mount it anymore.
When I try to restore it I got:

Restoring “disk3s2” from “Unnamed”
Validating target...
Validating source...
Repartitioning target device...
Could not change the partition type for /dev/disk3s2 - Operation not permitted
The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error 1.)
Operation failed…
When I try to erase it...
Erasing “disk3s2” and creating “UNTITLED”
Unmounting disk
Couldn’t modify partition map. : (-69874)
Operation failed…
And mounting it got me:
Could not mount “disk3s2”. (com.apple.DiskManagement.disenter error -119930868.)
What do I do?

I'm seeking some guidance on recovering from my accidental deletion of files from
/usr/standalone/firmware
on my M2 MacBook running Ventura 13.0.
The removal was by an app called [Sonoma Cache Cleaner](https://www.northernsoftworks.com/sequoiacachecleaner.html)
After rebooting, none of my apps worked normally:
- some wouldn't open
- Firefox was able to run briefly but crashes promptly
- Terminal.app crashed at one point during my recovery efforts
I was able to recover the lost files with [Disk Drill](https://www.cleverfiles.com)
Files recovered are mostly **.img4** files. As well as a kernelcache (System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kernelcahes/kernelcache)
I have tried various methods to copy the recovered files to */usr/standalone/firmware*
I'm aware that modifiying System files is risky.
I disabled SIP with: csrutil authenticated-root disable
---
**Update**
Just tried a reinstall with SIP disabled.
It canceled at 8 mins left with this message:
> An error occurred while preparing the installation. Try running the application again

Is there any way to extract these three (actually sessions are more like 4 files) files? Google Chrome should have them open so the content hasn't been permanently deleted / trimmed from the SSD.
