Why/How does Image Capture make TIFF scans 85% smaller when rotation is applied?

When I use Image Capture to scan a 4x6 print photo on my flatbed scanner at 600 dpi, with no rotation applied to the bounding box, the resulting TIFF file is generally around 11 MB in size, and the same scan saved as JPEG is about 1.2 MB in size. However, I've discovered that if I use any nonzero amount of rotation on the bounding box, the resulting TIFF is about 1.8 MB in size, while the same scan saved as a JPEG is (again) 1.2 MB in size. In other words, I'm consistently finding that applying rotation shrinks the file size of the resulting TIFF by a whopping 85% — nearly as big a difference as saving in JPEG. Other than the tilt, however slight, the two TIFFs are visually indistinguishable, and both have exactly the same dimensions in pixels. If I open each TIFF in GraphicConverter 12 and re-save each as a TIFF with ZIP compression, both of the resulting files are about the same size as the original zero-rotation TIFF (i.e., the shrinkage of the rotated-capture TIFF goes away).
Here's a small screenshot to illustrate the results of my test:
Again, I have found this result to be consistent across dozens of scans. What on earth is going on here, to make the very-slightly-rotated-capture TIFF so dramatically smaller than the orthogonal-capture TIFF?

I have in my iPhone a mixture of HEIC and JPG pictures. I have set my "Photo" settings for the transfer of pictures to a Mac or PC to "automatic". From my understanding, this should convert the pictures from HEIC to JPG on download via cable (I conclude this from [What is HEIC file, and how to convert HEIC to JPG?](https://macpaw.com/how-to/what-is-heic-file) , paragraph "How to transfer iPhone photos as JPG, not HEIC").
On my MacBook, I use ImageCapture to transfer the files.
However, the HEIC files end up as HEIC. No conversion to JPG is done.
What did I do wrong?
Version information:
iPhone 14 Pro Max, iOS 16.6.1
MacBook Pro, MacOS 12.6.9
Image Capture 8.0
**UPDATE**
[Export media from iPhone directly to external drive?](https://apple.stackexchange.com/a/465517/85275) claims that the conversion can be controlled by Image Capture.
This does not seem to be true for my version of Image Capture, which does not have a "Keep Original" option, as can be seen from the screenshot:

(Back them up as in have a copy of every photo and video stored on backup media (NAS + external drive + my own cloud) as individual photo and video files outside of the "backup" process for iPhone. So, basically download all media without loss of quality)
It seems there are at least 3 ways to do it without iCloud: Photos app, Image Capture, Air Drop.
I've been trying to research which way is better, and stumbled onto this vid (it's not in English, but I understood the general point):
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/nVa8Z2Okuv8
...and it seems to suggest that both Photos app and Image Capture alter the file in some way as they extract it from the iPhone - either compressing it or removing edits history/metadata.
On the other hand, Airdropping 11000+ files would suck as well, as my experience (and multiple online posts) tells me that airdrop bugs out when you try to transfer more than ~500 files in one go, probably even less if the files are big (e.g., videos).
So, is there a definitive spec for each method: what the quality loss and best practices is?

I don't think the issue is lack of trust. I've clicked 'trust' on both the phone and the laptop and I've entered my passcode, etc.
Can someone tell me how to get Image Capture to connect to the iPhone?

I'm running macOS 14.1 (23B74). I have a Canon MF656Cdw.
I find if I scan from the document feeder using Preview, it will sometimes break up the scan into separate PDFs in a way that's, well, incorrect. The thumbnail tray will show, for example, the first three pages in one PDF, but then all the pages in a second PDF. It's confusing. The relevant settings are:
- Duplex
- PDF Format
- Combine into a single document
- OCR
By contrast, Image Capture never has this problem. However, Image Capture requires that I know where I want to put the file and what I want to call it. My preferred workflow would be do scan the document, then figure all that out sitting at the computer with the PDF open. I also find the UI for picking the name in advance incredibly clunky. Plus I then have an extra operation to apply the "Reduce Size" Quartz filter with every scan rather than doing that as part of the save process.
I'm totally open to this being an EBKAC. What am I doing wrong, if anything, and how can I get Preview to actually combine everything into a single document? Thanks!
**edit**: Adding this heavily redacted screenshot. This just happened. The document is 14 pages. I watched all 7 pages be individually fed through the document scanner. However, I ended up with two documents, one of which contained the first two pages (labeled A and B in my screenshot) and the other of which also included the third page (labeled C). I tried this scan twice just now with identical results.
**edit:** Added screenshot for of settings. I've tried with both of these settings with a shorter document -- four pages duplex on two sheets of paper, and I still get two partial PDFs. With

Open each file in its own window
, Preview *creates* two windows *during* the scan, but *then* puts both partial PDFs into the same window when things are done *despite* having that setting on.
**edit 2:** Getting this with another document as well.

My mom is a photographer, and she wants the original quality photos downloaded off her iPhone to use in professional photo programs like Lightroom and Photoshop.
She previously used
Image Capture
to do this, but has recently begun using Optimize Photo Storage
to also store all these photos on iCloud.
According to my research , this means that sometimes photos downloaded via Image Capture
will not be full size, so Image Capture
is out.
We instead tried to download these originals via the Photos app
on the Mac. However, you can only download the **unmodified** original photo (in Image Capture
it showed the original AND the modified for download).
This is inconvenient of course because any edits made on the iPhone won't come through.
We also tried to export a JPEG from the Photos app
, but both the High
and Maximum
quality were not the same size or quality as the modified original photos we could download on Image Capture
. It seems a normal export via the Photos app
does some kind of conversion on it so it is no longer original. But that also seems to be the only way to get the modifications from the Photos app
So...how do we download the **modified** original image from the Photos app
?
(Or...how would we download the modified original image from Image Capture
while guaranteed that the photo is the Full Size photo and not a thumbnail or some other not full quality version?)

I'm pretty sure kernel extensions must be arm64, but I don't know if Image Capture drivers are kernel extensions.

How do I get to the detailed search result within a camera scanned document in the Notes app?
If I create a note on my iPhone, and use the camera to "scan" a document, it looks like the content of the document is searchable by the global search in the Notes app on my Mac and iPhone. But how do I find the exact location within that document? There appears to be no highlight of the search result, nor any way to search within that document.
Is there an obvious trick that I am missing? Even if I open the attached document in a new window, there is no search interface at all.
I am using macOS Ventura and iOS 16.1.1

I have an **iPhone 12 Pro** with several thousands of photos and videos inside of it that I would like to offload onto an external hard drive. I need to reduce the amount of data on the phone *before* I can back it up with **iTunes**.
I have a **Mac Mini 2011** running **High Sierra**.
I plugged in and unlocked the **iPhone** and opened Apple's Image Capture .
I dragged the photos I wanted to copy to a folder where I wanted to back them up, several thousands at a time (there are over 20'000 photos on the iPhone), and always get errors such as:
I cannot see the list of files that are not transferred (it clips after 5). There is no "retry" button or explanation.
Even when I try dragging smaller batches, I have the error even dragging just one file at a time.
Sometimes the transfer stops because the phone was going to sleep and needing to be unlocked again, which made the process more cumbersome.
I tried another, third-party app called **SendAnywhere** which resulted in an error message when attemptimg to transfer over 2'000 photos, but it helped me find out that the files that are not copying with **Image Capture** are not corrupted because they transferred fine.
I also wanted to try another 3rd party app called **iMazing**, but it requires an **iTunes** backup to work and I don't have enough local hard drive space for that now.
Although I am very curious and intrigued as to why this error occurs on a software created by the company that claims to have invented drag-and-drop (corrupted data on the files? Lightning cable issue? Bad software?), I would very much like to be able to transfer large amounts of data from my phone back to my computer.
**How can I do that?**

If Image Capture is already running on my Mac and I take a screenshot/recording on my iPhone then quite often (not always however) Image Capture does not update/refresh the device contents and the new screenshots/videos and not available for download.
The only way I am currently able to force Image Capture to refresh the contents of the connected device is to unplug and replug its USB cable.
Does anyone know of a way I might force Image Catpure to refresh the contents without having to pull the cable?
PS:
- Restarting Image Capture does not work

This issue has created a lot of frustration, so I'm hoping someone here might have the answer. I'm using Image Capture to work with some photos on my iPhone. When I select one or more photos on the Image Capture screen and hit the "Delete" button, the photos disappear from the Image Capture screen but nothing happens on my phone. The photos don't delete. When I restart Image Capture, the supposedly deleted photos reappear!
I'm using an iPhone 11 running iOS 14.0.1. I'm connected to a 2018 Mac Mini running 10.15.7. I'm also having the same issue on a 2015 iMac running 10.15.7 and a similar problem on an equivalent photo management program on a Windows machine, so the problem must be in my phone.
I've tried USB-A and USB-C cables and all the available USB ports. I've erased the phone and set it up as a new machine. The issue occurred even on a newly installed operating system with no other programs. It's infuriating.
Looking forward to your thoughts.
