I am trying to sync my computer through google drive. Often these symbols appear next to folders and files and I would like to understand exactly what they mean, and when I will see them. Surely there is some big list of the definitions of each symbol? 1. Blue and white cloud: Blue and white cloud 2. Empty cloud: Empty cloud 3. Empty cloud with arrow: Empty cloud with arrow 4. Dotted cloud: dotted cloud 5. Green checkmark: Green checkmark 6. Red exclamation mark xclamation mark 7. Nothing (even when inside a folder with one of the other symbols, or a folder containing files with one of the other symbols) nothing 8. Looks like I can also have multiple of these: (blue and white cloud + empty cloud): double Probably there are others, but I'm just surprised to keep encountering new symbols I haven't seen, and I really want to understand the technical meaning behind them.

I used to convert a bunch of HEIC pictures on my MacBook into JPEG format by using Finder, marking the HEIC, and use from the context menu "Quick Actions" and then "Convert Image". Since my update to MacOS 12.7.3 (I think I had before 12.7.1 or 12.7.2), this does not work anymore. I don't get any error message or other visual feedback either. Clicking on "Convert to JPEG" simply does not have any observable effect. How can this be fixed?

How to interpret reported file sizes from dd?

System: iMac M4, Sequoia 15.6 I found various suggestions for quick ways to create a large file for testing purposes. What I don't understand is what dd actually produces. Example: dd if=/dev/urandom of=bar.txt bs=1g count=10 seek=100 Finder window says "bar.txt 118.11 GB" . But the GetInfo window says "size 118,111,600,640 bytes (10.75 GB on disk) " Further, the GetInfo window for "Macintosh HD" seems to agree with the smaller value so far as disk space used vs. free is concerned. I'm guessing that my inexperience with dd means I'm not using bs and seek correctly? If so, what are a set of compatible args to use so the output file has a reliable size reported? As a side note, mkfile 10g fmkfile.txt produces a file that both Finder and GetInfo agree is 10.74 GB.

I find that I generally cannot remove files on my main (hfs) external drive via Preview. I can remove them via a Finder window, and I can remove then from Terminal, just not Preview! If they're on my main drive (the internal SSD on my Mac Mini), I can remove them via Preview without any problem. Here's the directories (and security flags) for one file in question (foo.jpg): ls -l -d / /Volumes/ss /Volumes/ss/pics /Volumes/ss/pics/misc drwxr-xr-x 20 root wheel 640 Oct 12 2022 / drwxrwxr-x+ 97 root wheel 3366 Jul 26 22:49 /Volumes/ss drwxrwxr-x 33 sieler staff 1122 Jul 27 21:17 /Volumes/ss/pics drwxrwxr-x 13 sieler staff 442 Jul 27 21:24 /Volumes/ss/pics/misc -rw-r--r-- 1 sieler staff 3035137 Jul 19 12:40 foo.jpg Attempts to remove via Previe (e.g., right-click, select 'Move to Trash'; or left click and hit command-backspace) get a popup: You do not have permission to move the file "foo.jpg" to the trash. What's wrong with Preview? (And, can I fix it?) My external drive is: macOS Extended (Journaled) I'm on Monterey (12.6.1) *** **Update**: Oddly, Preview will let me rotate them and save them back in place, which effectively removes (and recreates) them, so it *has* access! And, since I can Finder-remove, or Terminal/rm-remove, I clearly have the rights to remove the file (and to access the .Trash folder). (Yes, the vast majority of other files on the drive are Preview removable.)

Thanks! EDIT: I tried restoring "com.apple.finder.plist" from /Users/[User]/Library/Preferences but it doesn't work. I don't think the system is letting me do this properly while Finder is running. Is there a way to keep it killed while I swap the file? Or how could I do this from recovery? Does this file even store the open folders?

I’m looking at some video files (captured from various iOS and Android devices) using Finder’s Inspector. In the “more info” section, it lists Dimensions, Codecs, and Duration… but there’s also a “Color profile” which I don’t understand. For image files, this would be something like sRGB, but for video files, it just displays cryptic numbers. Depending on the file, it either displays as “HD (1-1-1)” or “(5-1-5)”. So my questions are: * Is there a webpage somewhere that explains what the numbers mean for these video color profiles? * Does one set of numbers indicate a higher-quality video (à la chroma subsampling)?

I'm on macOS Big Sur 11.1, and I wanted to use a different folder for my Safari downloads, so I created another directory and did
-s ~/Downloads
on it (symlinked). Everything works fine except for a small thing. In the Finder app, on the sidebar, this folder has a "standard folder" icon, even if it is recognized in the preferences as my Downloads folder (see the attached pictures). Is there any way to at least make the Finder think that folder as the original Downloads folder? Or maybe is there a way to manually change its icon? Please note that I already found some answers to my question on this site, but they seem to not to be compatible with Big Sur. Sidebar Finder Preferences

According to System Preferences, the Downtime feature of Screen Time "[s]ets a schedule for time away from the screen. During downtime, only apps that you choose to allow and phone calls will be available." Downtime blocks most apps, but it does not block Finder. It blocks the Quick Look feature of Finder for video but not audio or PDF. How can I block Quick Look for all file types during downtime? Alternatively, can I force a log out during downtime? As I recall, the Restrictions feature that preceded Screen Time could force a log out. If Screen Time cannot do this, then what parental control apps can?

Isn't the whole idea of this that I can see what is in my Photos library? And, I have verified that the intended picture is actually showing up in Photos app, just not in the file picker in the Finder integration.

Can I use Terminal, or some kind of script, to prevent Finder from click-drag-moving or renaming files (unless a user defined modifier key is pressed at the same time, like ⌥ Option or ⌘ Command) There's the Esc button in order to cancel an action, indeed, (as well as the Undo function), but unfortunately due to my OCD, it doesn't reassure me.
