I'm using a new MacBook Pro 15" with macOS 10.13.4 configured with the default Color LCD color profile. I'm doing some graphic design work and noticed that all colors in Chrome and Safari appear "washed out" when compared to Firefox. The latter has more saturated/vibrant colors. And this happens to native HTML/CSS elements (i.e. not images only). Here's a screenshot of the SmashingMagazine homepage with the comparison (Chrome on the left, Firefox on the right). Notice how the colors are more vibrant in Firefox (right): enter image description here If I change my display's color profile to sRGB IEC61966-2.1, then both Chrome and Firefox look the same. Why is this? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I’m looking at some video files (captured from various iOS and Android devices) using Finder’s Inspector. In the “more info” section, it lists Dimensions, Codecs, and Duration… but there’s also a “Color profile” which I don’t understand. For image files, this would be something like sRGB, but for video files, it just displays cryptic numbers. Depending on the file, it either displays as “HD (1-1-1)” or “(5-1-5)”. So my questions are: * Is there a webpage somewhere that explains what the numbers mean for these video color profiles? * Does one set of numbers indicate a higher-quality video (à la chroma subsampling)?

External display will not achieve full brightness?

My external display (HP 27f 4k ) will not achieve full brightness when connected to my M1 MacBook Pro (2020, 13", Ventura 13.2) via the official Apple USB-C HDMI adapter . - The display's brightness is cranked all the way up - "*True Tone*" is off - "*Automatically adjust brightness*" is off - "*Slightly dim display on battery*" is off - I've recalibrated the display color, gamma, and white point (in macOS) and then restored it back to the factory default (because it made no difference to the brightness) I noticed this because I sometimes need to use a Windows laptop with this display. The monitor on Windows was noticeably brighter. So, I measured the brightness with a screen calibration tool and compared the results of the same monitor in the same location (all the same external variables) with the monitor plugged into my MacBook and then into a Windows laptop. I measured against a fullscreen browser window displaying a page with nothing but #FFFFFF (white) as the background color. Results: - 290 nits from the MacBook - 335 nits from the Windows laptop What's going on here? I suspect this is a software thing because I *think* I've seen the display snap from full brightness to this dimmed state after login. I say "think" because now that I've decided to write this post, I can't reproduce it. But my memory is that I'll log in, and seconds after the desktop is displayed, the brightness snaps to this dimmed state.

I just upgraded to macOS Ventura and now the Preview.app doesn't seem to have a Print Quality option or a Color vs Black & White option when I'm printing from Preview. The only weird thing I notice in the Print dialog (shown below) is that it says my HP OfficeJet is using a Laser Printer driver. I've tried removing and reinstalling the printer a couple of times and it ends up the same way each time. Mac Studio 2022, Ventura 13.0.1 HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 Series screenshot of print dialog from Preview.app The file I'm trying to print is inherently black and white, so I thought that might be part of the problem. So I opened a color image in Preview.app and tried to print it. It turns it into black and white in the print preview and doesn't offer me the Quality or Color vs Black/White either: screenshot of preview with color image screenshot of print dialog showing the color image in black/white Any idea where it is or why the Print Quality and Color/Black&White might be missing?

I installed a new logic board and thought I had to reinstall MacOS, so I upgraded to the final release of Big Sur. I've realized the bash shell is no longer being used, and now MacOS is using zsh, and simply editing my bash_profile file. This is one reason why I don't like upgrading to newer OS's, but can also no longer remain on Mojave for multiple reasons. My attempts: 1. Since nano ~/.bash_profile is no longer being looked at by MacOS, I've tried simply updating zsh_profile, .zprofile, and .profile with my original commands that were exactly what I wanted for my profile: export CLICOLOR=1 export LSCOLORS=GxFxCxDxBxegedabagaced and unfortunately this has done nothing after properly saving, confirmed the save state, exiting and restarting the computer each time with no change. 2. Additionally, I did open ~/.zshrc and added the export commands along with the following conditional command: if [ -f ~/.bash_profile ]; then . ~/.bash_profile; fi which was in a thread from Stack Overflow, but this did not work either. 3. I also went into my Terminal Preferences and under the General settings, changed my 'Shell open with' from the Default login shell to 'Command (complete path) /bin/bash but this changed nothing even when I made sure my bash_profile is also updated on this new installation of Big Sur. 4. When clicking 'Profiles' and selecting the Advanced tab, I've declared terminal as xterm hoping this would also update my main color scheme, but no. 5. I "brute forced" the colors by altering the ANSI colors from magenta and cyan to red and blue which partially worked for the terminal, but then when I verified what Vim looked like afterward, it obviously inverted my colors which I do not like. So I switched the ANSI colors back. I have Vim exactly as I want it for traditional Linux highlighting. I could technically switch the ANSI colors back in Terminal Preferences again and just alter my highlighting LineNr, ctermfg and Tagname colors in my ~/.vimrc file, but I really don't feel like I should have to make those kind of alterations. I would much prefer to get the system to just properly see my zsh color scheme to classic Linux xterm colors. I cannot stand the zsh color scheme and just want the old bash highlighting theme, but as mentioned, I can no longer use Mojave, and Monterey has a bad reputation for eating through batteries. I also replaced my old battery with a brand new one and everyone seems to like the final release of Big Sur, rather than upgrading to the latest OS's. How can I change zsh to be like bash used to work?

Zoom in and see that the settings are the same, the resolution is the same, the refresh rate is the same and the color profile is the same. But here's what's *even weirder*--when you close the lid of the MBP *the external display becomes washed out too*! What could cause that? Top is on MBP, nice blacks, bottom is on the Air, all nasty gray

I have a MacBook Pro Touch 2017. A few days ago, I noticed that the display seems to have started to have a very ***faint*** warm/reddish tint, but I can tell the difference nonetheless. The greys aren't "cool grey" anymore, but more like "red grey", and the whites are sort of "_faint pink_-white". I really started noticing this because once after startup of macOS, the display was first "cool/bright" (what I would describe as normal), but perhaps 30 seconds after entry to the OS/Desktop, the whole screen switched to the red tint. This "alteration" doesn't happen every time starting the computer, but quite regularly. When comparing the display to that of a MacBook Pro 2013, it is clearly bluer/cooler in its display. Note that the displays aren't calibrated beyond the factory calibration and default profiles. The issue occurs regardless of any external displays being connected. This is not related to True Tone, Night Shift or anything like that.

I'm not sure if it's possible but I'd like to disable color management on OS X, or at least when working with Photoshop and Illustrator. The problem is that no matter what I do in both application when trying to set a color mode, a color profile or the Proof Color options, both apps are showing different colors for the same image. Here is a screenshot with how it looks when I have both application windows with one part over the built-in monitor and the other over an external monitor. enter image description here Also, when I was tracking down the issue, I discovered that [when dragging the windows](https://youtu.be/iF_auRnofrA) from one monitor to the other, the colors look like if the window is still on the first monitor, but then change to how they look in the second monitor after I stop dragging the window. This makes me thing that is not a color calibration issue, but rather something with the way the app manage the color profile for that monitor. So, is there a way to solve this problem? maybe disabling color management at all for the whole system, or only for some applications?

I use a giant cursor, and have it rendered as yellow outlined by red. Yeah, my vision is bad enough that I really LOVE those features! (size and color of mouse pointer) However, when I encounter mouse-over text, the cursor sits on top of it and I can't read most of it. I've tried to quickly move the mouse pointer away, but that usually doesn't work. I had the idea today to make my giant mouse pointer colors slightly transparent, so I could read the moused-over text through the pointer. BUT if you set the transparency of the outline color below 92% it changes to white. If you set the transparency of the fill color below 92% it turns black. I understand that letting people turn down transparency all the way, you could lose the mouse pointer completely, so it makes sense that transparency is limited for the mouse colors. But it seems like a 50% or 75% opaque would still allow the cursor to be seen AND still see the text that's behind it. At 92% opaque, you can sort of see the text behind the cursor, it's not a complete failure, but it's very faint. Does anybody know about this subject in more depth. Because it's a real-world accessibility issue, I'd like to tell Apple about it? Any other thoughts?

How can I prevent whatever re-encoding is doing this? I’ve tried exporting the wallpaper as an 8-bit PNG, but that introduces banding even when viewed in Preview. I’ve also tried the sRBG, Display P3, and Color LCD color profiles, and using a TIFF, as well as setting the wallpaper via System Settings, the Finder context menu, and an AppleScript that tells Finder set desktop picture to POSIX file "/example/filename.png".

I am reusing two old monitors for which I found no custom way to set brightness, contrast, and gamma (see appendix below for full details). On a bright background, the colors look dull and I want to change the gamma correction to something close to a MacBook Pro retina display, which has sharp colors on the same background. On a Windows computer with the same monitor, I can change brightness, contrast, and gamma for the NVIDIA GeForce GT 220 graphic card with the utility in C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\Control Panel Client\nvcplui.exe. It shows three sliders for brightness, contrast, and gamma that have an immediate effect. NVIDIA tool to set brightness, contrast, and gamma On macOS, the Display Calibrator Assistant (from System Preferences > Displays) asks to change brightness and contrast with the monitor's buttons and to choose a white point. It says nothing about gamma, and does not change any of the settings. With ColorSync Utility, I was able to view the ICC profile of the monitor and confirm it has gamma correction: Gamma correction for ICC profile I was also able to load a different profile (that of an LED Home Cinema Display that has sharp and crisp colors) but this made no difference on the monitor: Different display I have read https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/302594/set-the-color-profile-of-my-external-monitor and https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/244928/can-i-calibrate-2-screens-to-match-without-buying-expensive-gear/244976 and still don't know how to change the gamma. I am on macOS 10.14.6. Can I adjust brightness, contrast, and gamma of a monitor on macOS? If not, why is it impossible? ## details on monitors The monitors are Samsung SyncMaster SA100 and S22A460. The monitor SA100 only has a power button. [This page](https://helper365.blogspot.com/2012/02/how-to-adjust-brightness-in-samsung-19.html) suggests an auto-adjustment by holding the on/off button for 10 seconds. This method works but the result is still dull (it's probably how it came). I downloaded the latest MagicTune software for macOS from [this page](http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/learningresources/monitor/magetune/pop_download.html) , for macOS 10.3.9-10.5.7 and the installer says:
This package is incompatible with this version of macOS and may fail to install.
The installation fails. I downloaded the latest version [for Windows 8](https://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/learningresources/monitor/magetune/pop_download.html) , MagicTune Premium 64 bit 4.0.36. No program of that name is in install in C:\Program Files, but when I try to install again I get a warning that the program is already installed. I found [this page](http://freevbs.blogspot.com/p/computer.html) that addresses the same problem. The third option mentions an open-source program, whose link redirects to a blog where I found [the tool](https://devoptions.blogspot.com/2013/03/monitor-brightness-adjustment-tool-for.html) , which is for Windows only. I installed .NET on a Windows computer and was able to run the tool, but it only controls brightness, not contrast and gamma: Adjustment tool on Windows Furthermore, the brightness setting does not port when I connect the monitor to macOS, so the settings are probably saved on the Windows machine and not on the monitor. The page does not provide the source code for me to have a play (the 7-zip archive contains the executable). On a SyncMaster S22A460, where I have buttons to control the display, I can adjust the brightness and contrast but not the gamma.

Right from the start, I've been experiencing occasional color glitches. Every 3rd or 4th time I wake the MacBook from sleep, the external display will show very low contrast (like a gray filter applied to the whole image). The MacBook's built-in display is unaffected. Most times, I can get back to normal colors by temporarily changing the external monitor's resolution. Any ideas what could be causing this and how to fix it permanently? I was unable to find any firmware updates for this display.
