My home network has connected: an iMac (recently updated from Monterey to Sequoia), a Windows machine, and a fairly old HP LaserJet 2100 TN.
Before the update, both computers could print to the HP reliably.
After the update to Sequoia, printing does not work anymore for the iMac. The printer is accessible via
**UPDATE**
I managed to install a dedicated printer driver downloaded from the HP site. Now I don't get anymore an error message in Red, but still can't print. See this screenshot of the Printer Queue:
ping
and traceroute
, but when I try to print to it from the iMac, **System Settings > Printers & Scanners** says that the printer queue is idle, but when I open the printer queue, it says the "printer is not responding".
I tried to reinstall the printer. I removed the current printer definition and used "add printer" to install a new one. Since the list of printers in the **Defaults** tab was empty, I clicked on the **IP** tab and installed instead the "generic PCL driver" using the IP address of the printer. If I remember correctly, I also had to do this after buying the iMac (which was shipped with Monterey).
After reinstalling the printer drivers, **System Settings > Printers & Scanners** again says that the printer is idle, but if I click on **Printer Queue**, I now immediately see "Printer offline".
It is interesting to note that printing works fine from the Windows machine, but **only** if the iMac is turned off (or in sleep mode) by the time the HP is turned on. Once the iMac runs for a while (or tries to print something), the Windows machine can't print to the HP either. This makes me suspect whether the problem could also be due to some bad settings in my router, though I don't know what to look for.
In case it is important: My router has an IP address 10.1.1.11, the printer has 10.1.1.20 (fixed address assigned). For my iMac the command ifconfig -a | grep broadcast
displays:
inet 10.1.1.23 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 10.1.1.255
inet 10.1.1.21 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 10.1.1.255
which all look reasonable to me.
Does anybody have a suggestion on what I could do to narrow down the problem?
**UPDATE**
As requested by _LincDavis_, I'm providing the output of
lpstat -t
$ lpstat -t
scheduler is running
system default destination: _10_1_1_20
device for _10_1_1_20: ipp://10.1.1.20/

printer EPSON_WF_2860_Series is idle. enabled since Sun Jun 22 12:13:57 2025
Explanation:
The HP printer I'm talking about, is the 10.1.1.20.
The EPSON WF 2860 is another printer on the network I have added. It is a printer/scanner. Printing to it does not work either (I get the message _Communication error_ when looking at the print queue), but scanning from the Epson works. From the Windows computer on the network, printing and scanning with the Epson works. I hadn't included the information about the Epson, since I thought that it unnecessarily confuses the matter. As for installing the Epson, I did not use the "add printer" dialogue built into MacOS, but a setup program which I downloaded from the Epson site.
**UPDATE**
Also as requested by @LincDavis, I'm providing the output of /var/log/cups/*
:
==> /var/log/cups/access_log /var/log/cups/error_log . <==
I just wonder what information we can get from this, except what we already know, i.e. that the printer does not react.
**UPDATE**
Here is the content of my /etc/cups/ppd directory:

We have a mac on yosemite 10.10.5 that was printing to a canon printer just fine up until the other day. No matter what we do with a 7x9.5 document, the canon printer gets the job and is complaining because it doesn't have size b5 paper. The thing is, we are telling it to print on us letter which is what it should be printing on. That is what the computer is set to for default and when we are on the print options page we have double checked over and over again that nothing is set wrong.
I have removed the printer, deleted the driver, restarted the computer, then reinstalled the driver and nothing has worked.
If we send the document to a neighboring Mac computer it prints just fine from there with the exact same settings.
Are there preference files or something for printers or acrobat that I can reset?

If not, is there a way to present the comments inline, just pushed by a level (like in reply messages?)
Thanks in advance!

I'm hoping to find a way to get this printer running with some generic 3rd (4th even!) party software. I tried connecting the printer via USB cable and ran into the same problem.

I have an iMac ( 2017 ) running Catalina 10.15. A year and half ago when I was running Mojave I purchased Adobe photoshop Elements 2019 directly from Adobe . The program was very glitchy but did function after a fashion.
When I upgraded to Catalina, Elements got even worse and the only solution Adobe wanted to offer was to get me to pay more money and then to continue to do so. When I bought Elements 2019 it was not available in the App store and now it is.
My question is this: is the ability to design and print the multipage wall calendars that are part of the Adobe purchased app, still available in the App store version?

After a few trials it did launch the messages app but it didn't show the pdf within it, nothing to send. Wanted to try the same plug in with iBooks to see if it works and it did beautifully; saved the pdf to iBooks. I’m using the “open finder items” command. Is there something different I should do to make this work with messages app? My OS is BigSur 11.1.
Thanks!

I just upgraded to macOS Ventura and now the Preview.app doesn't seem to have a Print Quality option or a Color vs Black & White option when I'm printing from Preview.
The only weird thing I notice in the Print dialog (shown below) is that it says my HP OfficeJet is using a Laser Printer driver.
I've tried removing and reinstalling the printer a couple of times and it ends up the same way each time.
Mac Studio 2022, Ventura 13.0.1
HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 Series
The file I'm trying to print is inherently black and white, so I thought that might be part of the problem. So I opened a color image in Preview.app and tried to print it. It turns it into black and white in the print preview and doesn't offer me the Quality or Color vs Black/White either:
Any idea where it is or why the Print Quality and Color/Black&White might be missing?

Is there a way to determine from the terminal (or a shell script) whether or not a printer is online? The printer list in System Settings can display whether a printer is online, so I hope there might be shell-script way of doing it.
I've searched extensively, and can't find an uptodate answer.

First off, I hope this is correct forum and not Stack Exchange for instance. I have Apple M3 Max chip MacBook Pro running Sequoia 15.4.1
With the last 2 OS updates I've received the attached Mac message:
I use Canon IJ Scan Utility V 1.4.0 and my MX922 has driver 3.031 installed. Current driver update available is 3.041 and I'm pretty sure there is an update for the App - I forgot to check. Lately the app has been a little wonky - takes longer than usual to scan or occasionally freezes up and I have to force quit.
I'd like to update the driver and app if applicable, but I am worried about either not being compatible with Sequoia. I dont want to update the system into "incompatibility" and have a busted app or unusable MX922.
Suggestions? Can anyone can tell me if the latest versions will work for sure with my version of macOS with no issues? Update driver and app or what?? Just keep putting up with it? Looking for help. Thank you!!

I'll attempt to print a one-page email using the File -> Print dialog in Mail and sometimes, I would say randomly, the header will print all by itself as the first page. Then, the body of the email prints as the second page. There doesn't seem to be a way to distinguish which emails will trigger this phenomenon. This can happen on pure text emails, no HTML or images required. I'm talking about the standard short header of From:, To: and Subject:
This occurs on Sequoia 15.4.1 and an HP 8020 series printer. Restarting Mail or even rebooting doesn't help. Another odd thing about it is that the Print Preview shows the header by itself as the first page, so the preview and the actual printed result are in sync.

I have two Macs:
- One I upgraded to High Sierra without wiping it. All my existing printer drivers function properly.
- The second Mac I upgraded fresh to High Sierra after a complete wipe. The printer drivers aren't working.
I have a Konica Minolta Magicolor 7540 Grafx II. On the machine with the fresh OS install, the option for duplexing 11x17 is missing. I've tried several different versions of the driver, from various sources, and when I can get it to duplex, it only prints out the left hand side of the page. On one side of the double-sided print, it prints the left hand side of the page, properly positioned on the left hand side of the paper. One the second side of the duplex print, it prints the left hand side of the paper, but it is scooted over to the right, so there is a huge blank space on the left.
Is there a way to transfer all the properly function print drivers from one mac to another? I have tried copying the file from "Library -> Printers ->" and "Users -> Library -> Printers." That does indeed give me a second installation of the printer, but the duplexing issue is still there.
Konica has not upgraded their print driver for almost two years, so simply downloading a new one for OS 10.13 isn't possible. The print driver that currently functions properly on my upgraded machine is version 1.7.
I have tried downloading new drivers, both of version 1.9 and version 1.7. I have tried copying the Printer settings from the old machine to the new machine. I've tried using the "Add Printer" function in the system preferences.
I don't know what else to try. Can anyone assist?

~/Library/PDF Services
still has this folder alias but when I select it to "print" to, there is no PDF file generated.
I've read some stuff about PDF Services changing in Big Sur but no conclusive answer how to bring back this essential function where I can print anything to PDF to a preset folder with like 3 clicks.

The printer (HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 (N911g)) stopped working after upgrading the printer driver as per 'HP Easy Start'.
Every print job now times out and all there is to see in the Print Queue application is the message "Printing – Filter failed".
The logs in
/var/log/cups
show no indication of anything wrong.
The log System Report
shows that 'Inkjet3' crashed.
(/Library/Printers/hp/cups/Inkjet3.driver/Contents/MacOS/Inkjet3
)
> Termination Reason: DYLD, [0x4] Symbol missing
>
> Dyld Error Message:
> Symbol not found: _cupsRasterOpen
> Referenced from: /Library/Printers/hp/cups/Inkjet3.driver/Contents/MacOS/Inkjet3
> Expected in: /usr/lib/libcups.2.dylib
Printer is connected via USB.
Drivers I tried amonng others from HP were:
- hp-printer-essentials-S-5_14_8_4.pkg
- hp-printer-essentials-H-5_15_5_5.pkg
Which all seem to report version number '4.5.0' to the system.
The packages available from 'HP Easy Admin' for various macOS versions are all the same down to MacOSX 10.9: "Essential Software 5.10.5.5" 164,4MB
In that state the printer is accepting test-pages from HP utilities and printing them just fine!
Things not resolving the issue:
- re-installing the latest driver package(s)
- deleting the printer and re-adding the printer from the PreferencePane
- resetting the print system (including a reboot before adding printers)
Workaround to get it to print:
1. resetting the print system
2. deleting the entire folders /Library/Printers/hp
and /Library/Printers/PPDs
3. adding the printer anew
only now it automatically downloads old Apple provided drivers?
Version is identifying as '4.1.1'
This brings ink to paper.
(AFAIK among the changes made in a later update by HP was a better ink-economy, so this is financially worth-while to update, if not necessary. The same driver version number is reported if one uses a recent HP forum suggestion to install 'HPPrinterDrivers5.1.dmg' from HP.)
When in that state another attempt to upgrade the drivers is made, it again ends up at the exact same starting point: no printing "Filter failed"/Inkjet3 crashing…
Related questions not resolving this issue:
- https://apple.stackexchange.com/q/107362 (listing the same non-descript error message as presented to users)
- https://apple.stackexchange.com/q/404993/ (showing some issues a few weeks ago that disabled HP devices generally with a driver update because of some certificate trouble)
Looking through other forums, including those from HP, I do not see any solution that allows me printing from macOS 10.12 Sierra to that device with up-to-date drivers.
Printer driver version number as reported to the system 4.1.1 seems to work, version 4.5.0 does not.
How do I get this device to print with the latest working drivers?

I have absolutely no knowledge or experience in using Applescript or Automator. I'm hoping by using either to create an app (or script) that will print a test page off my printer automatically. I know how to open the printer app (Canon iX6800 series.app), but I'm stuck from there with the dialog box not knowing how to continue to do the following steps:
1. Run "Canon iX6800 series" - I got this part…
2. Select "Settings" or Command S
3. Select "Utility"
4. Select "Print Test Page"
5. Click "OK"
6. Quit the app.
Any suggestions or help will be greatly appreciated. I can send the actual app to whoever might need it. Thanks in advance.

I followed the two answers from including removing and re-adding the printer. These were very helpful - thank you! By using the FX Docuprint C525 A-AP v3.2 Driver software I can now print via the manual feed but not the paper tray.
In the print dialogue screen I did not see all the content from the previous post:
Maybe I'm missing something in this Layout step? Maybe I need to be in "Admin" mode or something?
In the printer settings I can choose from :
No matter the choice output only prints via the manual feed.
In the print job presets from Pages, I see that the Fuji Xerox is set for the alternate paper source. Maybe if this could be changed I'd be in business?
Thanks in advance for any insights and suggestions!

I have Samsung(acquired by HP) SL-C410W printer which works fine besides vendors try to force my to new one by not providing drivers to new operating systems anymore.
I'm trying to ran it on M1 Mac but the OS (Sequoia) / vendor drivers doesn't like themself.
Although I have old MacBook Pro 2011 which had those drivers installed in past. The old one thanks to **OpenCore Legacy Patcher** is running OSX Sonoma and the old printer drivers **work fine** with my printer. I realised although that if I need reinstall get rid of this computer I will loose the only path to still use my printer.
So instead of using installer I attempt to use PPD filles from the old computer. I've copied over those:

The string 'Szukam drukarki' is localized'Looking for printer' . Although it seems to resolve printer IP correctly via Bonjour, IPP and LPD. Not sure if this is indeed something network related or to the filter. It could be some permissions related to filter files but I'm not sure about correct ones - during copy I've destroyed printing capability on the old Intel Mac also by mistakenly doing some chown
/chmod
in wrong place. It's Printing Utility even says that there is permission error and proposes to fix it but nothing is fixed after the attempt, it strikes back while after.
Regarding /usr/libexec
part I didn't copied it into Apple Silicon OS as it doesn't seem to contain anything Samsung specific and I'm afraid Intel vs ARM binaries could get be into trouble works fine.
The file:
/Library/Printers/Samsung/Filters/rastertosec2
is multiarch x86/x64 however it runs fine with Rosetta2 on M1:

Per ChatGPT suggestion I've attempted to feed it with some test file but having trouble generating the test raster file and command:

Specifically, I want to change the colour matching for my Canon Pixma G3500 from Canon Color Matching to ColorSync.
In the print dialog,
Default Settings
, Draft Printing on Plain Paper
and Fine Printing on Plain Paper
cannot be permanently changed or deleted.
I can create custom settings but ideally I would like to change the defaults to avoid accidental wasted prints in future, for example if somebody using the print dialog chooses one of the three hardcoded presets instead of custom settings.
