Lately my Mac cannot connect to any scanners. I get this error message every time I open the system scan tool on any of the connected scanners:
Failed to open a connection to the device (-21345)
I've tried removing all scanners and re-installing.
I've tried doing "reset print system" on each connected device and then rebooting my system.
I've tried buying a brand new scanner (HP Deskjet 2755e in this case) but that new scanner has the same issue.
Tried updating to Mac OS 11.6 Big Sur.
This is the 2nd Mac I've had that is affected by this and so far the only thing that has ever (temporarily) fixed it is wiping the entire thing and reinstalling my system. I shouldn't have to do this every time I get this error.
All the scanners are connected over Bonjour AirPrint.
How do I fix this?

First off, I hope this is correct forum and not Stack Exchange for instance. I have Apple M3 Max chip MacBook Pro running Sequoia 15.4.1
With the last 2 OS updates I've received the attached Mac message:
I use Canon IJ Scan Utility V 1.4.0 and my MX922 has driver 3.031 installed. Current driver update available is 3.041 and I'm pretty sure there is an update for the App - I forgot to check. Lately the app has been a little wonky - takes longer than usual to scan or occasionally freezes up and I have to force quit.
I'd like to update the driver and app if applicable, but I am worried about either not being compatible with Sequoia. I dont want to update the system into "incompatibility" and have a busted app or unusable MX922.
Suggestions? Can anyone can tell me if the latest versions will work for sure with my version of macOS with no issues? Update driver and app or what?? Just keep putting up with it? Looking for help. Thank you!!

Preview has forever been my go to app on Apple. Trusted, versatile, a major component in my workflow.
Now it appears to be potentially handicapped (in Sonoma 14.14.1) because it is **attaching quarantine metadata to every file it opens!** So once a file, from any source (the tests I have done are on images I created), is touched by Preview it becomes potentially unusable, apparently marked as a threat to my system.
I came across this behavior because of a bug in Image Capture's scanner software. Files from the scanner were unable to be saved after opening and making changes in Preview. After more testing this appears to only happen when doing flat scans, black&white image, set to thousands of greys. This initiated the ask, but the question remains the same:
How do I stop Preview from making this mistake? And how do I fix the files it has mislabled?
I have already: used
xattr -r -d com.apple.quarantine
to clear the flag which does not work, it just returns after being cleared.
(edit:removed stuff related to scanner bug, focus on quarantine info.)

When scanning images using the default macOS Scanner app (from Printers & Scanners) I noticed that when I do a 600 dpi scan and choose a lossless image format like PNG or BMP, the resulting image still produces horrible JPEG artifacts.
The same happens with TIFF, HEIC, JPEG2000 and obviously also with regular JPEG itself.
I suspect some internal conversion or compression is taking place even before saving the image. Is there a way to circumvent that, or improve (i.e. lower) the compression rate?

Why/How does Image Capture make TIFF scans 85% smaller when rotation is applied?

When I use Image Capture to scan a 4x6 print photo on my flatbed scanner at 600 dpi, with no rotation applied to the bounding box, the resulting TIFF file is generally around 11 MB in size, and the same scan saved as JPEG is about 1.2 MB in size. However, I've discovered that if I use any nonzero amount of rotation on the bounding box, the resulting TIFF is about 1.8 MB in size, while the same scan saved as a JPEG is (again) 1.2 MB in size. In other words, I'm consistently finding that applying rotation shrinks the file size of the resulting TIFF by a whopping 85% — nearly as big a difference as saving in JPEG. Other than the tilt, however slight, the two TIFFs are visually indistinguishable, and both have exactly the same dimensions in pixels. If I open each TIFF in GraphicConverter 12 and re-save each as a TIFF with ZIP compression, both of the resulting files are about the same size as the original zero-rotation TIFF (i.e., the shrinkage of the rotated-capture TIFF goes away).
Here's a small screenshot to illustrate the results of my test:
Again, I have found this result to be consistent across dozens of scans. What on earth is going on here, to make the very-slightly-rotated-capture TIFF so dramatically smaller than the orthogonal-capture TIFF?

Sometimes I have a picture of a piece of paper that I would like to transform in the same way. Unfortunately, it seems the Notes app only allows the camera as input to "scan document" and not a picture.
Is there a workaround to achieve the same result when the input is a picture?

I have a Brother MFC-2740DW that I have been using for many years. For over a year I have had it connected to the local network via wifi. It has a scanner function, which I normally use via the Printer application on my Mac. Today the scanner function is no longer present.
I found some advice online to reset the print system, which involves deleting the printers in the Printers and Scanners preferences app, then re-adding them back. I tried that, and still there is no scanner function.
When accessing the app, the dialog now looks like this:
This looks different from how it looked previously. But at the top right there appears to be a printer icon and a fax icon, but no scanner icon. Clicking on any of these icons show nothing.
I can access the website built into the printer driver, and for scanning it only shows the option to scan to FTP, which is not what I want.
The printer control panel has a scan option, but when using it and attempting to scan to a file (or any other option) it just says "Check Connection".
The printer still prints normally, which tells me that the wifi connection is working. Rebooting the Mac or power cycling the printer does not help.
I am wondering if this can be fixed.
EDIT:
I temporarily accepted an answer because the scan function appeared to have been restored. The scanner apps looks just like it used to. However, when I tried a scan, I get "Scanner reported an error" and "an error occurred while communicating with the scanner." So I am not out of the woods yet!
Because of those error message decided to reboot the Mac. After that, the scanning is connecting up, and scanning is working.
So again selecting the first answer to come in.
EDIT 2:
I don't scan very often. But over the last couple of years, every time I try to use the scanner function, the scanner icon is dimmed out. Rebooting printer and computer sometimes helps, but usually I have to reinstall the scanner driver, as described in my answer below.
Sometimes the scanner icon is not even present.
Is there some fix other than reinstalling the driver every time?

I'm running macOS 14.1 (23B74). I have a Canon MF656Cdw.
I find if I scan from the document feeder using Preview, it will sometimes break up the scan into separate PDFs in a way that's, well, incorrect. The thumbnail tray will show, for example, the first three pages in one PDF, but then all the pages in a second PDF. It's confusing. The relevant settings are:
- Duplex
- PDF Format
- Combine into a single document
- OCR
By contrast, Image Capture never has this problem. However, Image Capture requires that I know where I want to put the file and what I want to call it. My preferred workflow would be do scan the document, then figure all that out sitting at the computer with the PDF open. I also find the UI for picking the name in advance incredibly clunky. Plus I then have an extra operation to apply the "Reduce Size" Quartz filter with every scan rather than doing that as part of the save process.
I'm totally open to this being an EBKAC. What am I doing wrong, if anything, and how can I get Preview to actually combine everything into a single document? Thanks!
**edit**: Adding this heavily redacted screenshot. This just happened. The document is 14 pages. I watched all 7 pages be individually fed through the document scanner. However, I ended up with two documents, one of which contained the first two pages (labeled A and B in my screenshot) and the other of which also included the third page (labeled C). I tried this scan twice just now with identical results.
**edit:** Added screenshot for of settings. I've tried with both of these settings with a shorter document -- four pages duplex on two sheets of paper, and I still get two partial PDFs. With

Open each file in its own window
, Preview *creates* two windows *during* the scan, but *then* puts both partial PDFs into the same window when things are done *despite* having that setting on.
**edit 2:** Getting this with another document as well.

I've had an HP OfficeJet 8600 for years with a Scan to Network Folder profile that will save the scanned file directly to a shared folder (shared as

) on my Mac. I just got a new HP OfficeJet 9020 series (9025e) and configured it the same way, but testing the Scan to Network Folder profile fails with "Incorrect Credentials".
8600 Configuration which works:
Network Path: \\192.168.1.153\Scans Local
Username: kenny
I have verified I'm using the same password on both.
Setting up the 9025, I created a new profile with the exact same configuration, but it just keeps saying:
Incorrect credentials. Check your username/password and try again.
The 8600, the 9025, and my Mac are all on the same 192.168.1.* network. I'm able to print to the 9025 from my Mac. I'm able to use the HP Smart app to tell the 9025 to scan the document on the glass and it sends it to the HP Smart app on my Mac and I can manually save it that way (i.e. I can talk to the printer and the printer can talk to me.)
I've even tried creating a new profile on the old 8600 with the same configuration just to make sure I had the right password. And the new profile, with all the same info, works just fine on the 8600.
What is different about the 9025? How can I get the 9025 working so that I can scan things directly to my Mac?
Any help is appreciated.

I have two macOS systems, one on Monterey (Intel) and one on Ventura (Apple Silicon), both with latests updates etc. I also have a Canon LiDE 220 scanner.
On the Monterey system this scanner works perfectly using the App Image Capture app, and has done for a number of years.
On the Ventura system, the same scanner has also worked well using Image Capture, but recently (within the last month) it start failing with an error messages like this:
The problem being that until I saw that error message I didn't even realize that the scanner had a lock switch! Of course following those instructions does not fix anything.
On occasion Image Capture doesn't report that error, but instead when you attempt to scan something, you just end up with a totally black image (and again note that this same scanner works perfectly well on my Monterey system).
I have followed the error dialog suggestions, I have also downloaded and installed the latest Canon drives for Ventura from here , as well as the Canon IJ Scan Utility (from that same location).
Somehow, a couple of days ago I got it to work, but then it failed again yesterday.
Can anyone suggest anything that might help with this?
---
Update 10/14/2023
Based on suggestions I installed VueScan on the Ventura system, and initially it worked fine. But now, with the macOS on Sonoma 14.1, VueScan itself is failing, as well as Image Capture. I contacted VueScan support, and the eventually the replay came back as:
> Once you get Image Capture to work, VueScan should work too.
So VueScan depends on the Apple/Canon infrastructure.
Also, 2 Days ago I updated a Canon driver, but now the Canon site is denying that there are any drives to download ::eye_roll::

My usual workflow when I scan a text document is to correct colors and play with contract to reduce their file size. However, since I upgraded to Sonoma, I find that whatever image I scan, to whatever format (tried png and jpeg so far) end up creating files that I am totally unable to save after modification, or save as another name, from the Preview app of macOS.
I get this message on Save As:
The document “scan.png” could not be saved as “scan-a”.
And this when I play with the colors and Save:
The document “scan.png” could not be saved.
If anyone knows a fix for this, I would be most grateful, as fixing colors of scanned PNG images reduces their size from 20 MiB to between 1 and 2 MiB. It also helps removing scan artifacts by playing with the contrast.
There seem to be additional macOS permissions happening here (judging from the
@
in the permissions), but I don't know much more. In the _Inspect_ window for the file, I don't see it being _Locked_ and the listed privileges for my user are _Read & Write_.

Funny, this quarantine
metadata that we see there 🤔. However, even after removing it...
xattr -d com.apple.quarantine scan.png

And the moment I try again to open it in _Preview_ and save it, the quarantine
metadata comes back.
### Alternatives Tried
The software saves automatically in ~/Pictures/Scan
. I tried copying the file over to ~/Downloads
and it had the same effect. I tried _Duplicate_-ing the file from _Finder_ and it still had the same behavior.

1. Is this normal?
2. Would it be safe to "Force Quit" Onyx - is it just doing a scan or is it moving things about?
3. When Onyx says that it is scanning the Data volume, does this indicate that it is scanning the main part of the disk?
4. Why, oh why, oh why could the makers of Onyx put some sort of progress indicator in their app. I hear that %age displays are popular these days 😉

I have multiple Macs at home. I have a Brother MFC L8850CDW. On all the computers except for one, this printer is recognized as a scanner by Apple's Brother print driver. I can't figure out why this computer can print but won't recognize the scanning functionality. Things I've tried (and I'll focus on two computers that are sitting next to each other side by side):
- Updating Brother firmware didn't help.
- Two Apple Silicon laptops, same OS (latest ventura os), same AirPrint driver, but only one recognizes the scanning functionality.
- On the laptop that doesn't recognize the scanner, resetting the print system didn't help.
- Not using Bonjour (and using IP) didn't help.
- Restarting computers or printer didn't help.
I'm out of ideas. These two computers are nearly identical (and software-wise, are completely identical), but one will scan and the other won't!

I have a Brother MFC-1910W connected by WIFI (multi functional wireless b/w laser printer, scanner and fax). Since a few days I cannot use the scanner any more.
In the first place the scanner icon was disabled so I decided to remove and add the printer. Since than the whole scanner icon disappeared as if the MFC has no scanner capabilities.
I have Brother driver 4.0.5 installed. I found a scanner 4.2.0 on brother support site (sorry, page not available in english ). From that installation on I cannot connect using bonjour any more but using IP but still no scanner available.
Now the best: Accessing from another MacBook (both running 10.13.2) there is no problem. It seems some printer driver installation or preferences are broken.
Any idea how to fix, cleanup, whatever (maybe an option to reset all printer driver info would be fine)?
