Some of them I recognize, but some I don't. I've never knowingly done anything to block any of them. Are they blocked from receiving packets, sending packets, or both? Is the block outside my local subnet, or does it include items within (printer, iPhones, iPads, router).

I'm trying to connect my Mac Pro tower (2020) to my network using ethernet but am experiencing problems if use my Netgear GS105 switch, this setup results in the MacPro saying "Cable connected but self-assigned IP". I've renewed DHCP leases, changed all sorts of settings including on my router but nothing works, I have also validated that this setup does work fine with every other computer (including a MacPro Trashcan) and if I connect the MacPro Cheese-grater directly to the router it works so to recap:
This does *not* work:
[Router]----[Switch]----[MacPro2020]
This does work:
[Router]----[Switch]----[MacPro Trashcan]
These also work:
[Router]----[MacPro2020]
[Router]----[MacPro2020]
I've also tried different cables in place of both and and it doesn't improve the situation, every possible combo works except if I have the MacPro 2020 Tower plugged in via the Netgear switch. Is there some issue with unmanaged switches and MacPro 2020 Towers?

I've been using this mac for about 8 months with my current wifi setup. For some reason, one day I just started getting a lot of ERR_NETWORK_CHANGED errors in Google Chrome. Nothing has changed, I have not moved my router or my Mac and the devices connected to the wifi are the same, yet I still get these errors. I did not apply any software updates to my Mac so I don't know what the root cause could be.
What are some possible causes in a sudden uptick of these errors?

I recently had to clear some network related settings and preferences in order to get online at an airport using a captive hotspot. This was done because the login window was not opening in Safari or any other browser. I tried using http://captive.apple.com , but it would not launch the window.
After these changes were made, I was able to get online on the airport wifi, but I am now unable to connect to my remote website servers using SSH in the Terminal app. When I try to connect to various remote servers, the connection hangs and eventually times out.
I have tried connecting to multiple servers using verbose output, and the following is returned:
OpenSSH_9.8p1, LibreSSL 3.3.6
debug1: Reading configuration data /Users/username/.ssh/config
debug1: /Users/username/.ssh/config line 85: Applying options for *

debug3: set_sock_tos: set socket 3 IP_TOS 0x48
Nothing is returned after the
set_sock_tos
line.
Things that I have tried:
- Tried enabling/disabling the built-in firewall, but it does not correct the issue.
- Tried removing plist files from Library > Preferences > System Configuration and restarted my MacBook to allow macOS to rebuild the preference files. This did not work. I backed up all of the files prior to completing this.
**Update**
Preference list files backed up and removed from the Library > Preferences > System Configuration folder:
- com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
- com.apple.wifi.message-tracer.plist
- NetworkInterfaces.plist
- preferences.plist
I am able to connect to the servers via SFTP in Transmit with no issues, and can do the same via SSH on my iPhone using Prompt.
No other changes were made while trying to connect to the airport Wifi using the captive hotspot.
Any ideas on how to resolve this issue?

My home network has connected: an iMac (recently updated from Monterey to Sequoia), a Windows machine, and a fairly old HP LaserJet 2100 TN.
Before the update, both computers could print to the HP reliably.

**UPDATE**
I managed to install a dedicated printer driver downloaded from the HP site. Now I don't get anymore an error message in Red, but still can't print. See this screenshot of the Printer Queue:
ping
and traceroute
, but when I try to print to it from the iMac, **System Settings > Printers & Scanners** says that the printer queue is idle, but when I open the printer queue, it says the "printer is not responding".
I tried to reinstall the printer. I removed the current printer definition and used "add printer" to install a new one. Since the list of printers in the **Defaults** tab was empty, I clicked on the **IP** tab and installed instead the "generic PCL driver" using the IP address of the printer. If I remember correctly, I also had to do this after buying the iMac (which was shipped with Monterey).
After reinstalling the printer drivers, **System Settings > Printers & Scanners** again says that the printer is idle, but if I click on **Printer Queue**, I now immediately see "Printer offline".
It is interesting to note that printing works fine from the Windows machine, but **only** if the iMac is turned off (or in sleep mode) by the time the HP is turned on. Once the iMac runs for a while (or tries to print something), the Windows machine can't print to the HP either. This makes me suspect whether the problem could also be due to some bad settings in my router, though I don't know what to look for.
In case it is important: My router has an IP address 10.1.1.11, the printer has 10.1.1.20 (fixed address assigned). For my iMac the command ifconfig -a | grep broadcast
displays:
inet 10.1.1.23 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 10.1.1.255
inet 10.1.1.21 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 10.1.1.255
which all look reasonable to me.
Does anybody have a suggestion on what I could do to narrow down the problem?
**UPDATE**
As requested by _LincDavis_, I'm providing the output of

$ lpstat -t

printer EPSON_WF_2860_Series is idle. enabled since Sun Jun 22 12:13:57 2025
Explanation:
The HP printer I'm talking about, is the 10.1.1.20.
The EPSON WF 2860 is another printer on the network I have added. It is a printer/scanner. Printing to it does not work either (I get the message _Communication error_ when looking at the print queue), but scanning from the Epson works. From the Windows computer on the network, printing and scanning with the Epson works. I hadn't included the information about the Epson, since I thought that it unnecessarily confuses the matter. As for installing the Epson, I did not use the "add printer" dialogue built into MacOS, but a setup program which I downloaded from the Epson site.
**UPDATE**
Also as requested by @LincDavis, I'm providing the output of /var/log/cups/*

I just wonder what information we can get from this, except what we already know, i.e. that the printer does not react.
**UPDATE**
Here is the content of my /etc/cups/ppd directory:

I can sort by 'Rcvd Bytes' or 'Rcvd Packets', but those would seem to be cumulative totals. Isn't there some kind of '% Network' column??

For the life of me I cannot resolve this issue. I was given a 2013 MacBook Air and upgraded it to Big Sur using my work’s WiFi.
At home it will connect only to the 5GHz network (it will not connect to 2.4GHz it says “incorrect password” even though it’s correct). Once connected it shows the green dot and connected IP, however no webpages will load.
I’ve spent hours trying things online such as:
1) Restarting router/modem
2) Deleting system configuration files in the preferences library
3) Changing network options under the network pretences for DNS
4) Forgetting the network and re-adding it
5) Starting in Safe Mode - problems still persist
6) Clearing DNS cache via Terminal
7) Adding “new” locations
8) Making sure time/date/region settings are correct
9) Turn off firewalls and removing anti virus software
10) Checking router blacklist & settings
I do not know where to go from here, the laptop works on other connections as well as my phone Hotspot.
Most errors in the browser window are “DNS_PROBE_...
NO INTERNET”
When I checked my DNS via Terminal, there are 7 resolvers all unreachable and at the bottom under (for scoped queries)
Reachable (8.8.8.8)
I have fiddled around with so many different “fixes” online and nothing has worked.
Any advice would be highly appreciated

I’m trying to retrieve the name of my Wi-Fi network via the terminal, but I’m encountering some issues.
I tried with the command:
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Apple80211.framework/Versions/Current/Resources/airport -s
However, it returns the following warning:
WARNING: The airport command line tool is deprecated and will be removed in a future release.
For diagnosing Wi-Fi related issues, use the Wireless Diagnostics app or the wdutil command line tool.
I also tried:
networksetup -getairportnetwork en0
But it returns:
You are not associated with an AirPort network.
Even though I am connected to Wi-Fi. I have tried disconnecting and reconnecting, as well as deleting the following .plist files in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/
:
com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
com.apple.network.identification.plist
com.apple.wifi.message-tracer.plist
NetworkInterfaces.plist
preferences.plist
Despite these efforts, I still have not resolved the issue.
I **DON'T** want to use wdutil
since it requires the sudo password. Is there any way to fix the problem with networksetup, or is there an alternative method to retrieve the Wi-Fi name?
Specifications: macOS Sequoia 15.0
Apple Silicon M3 Pro
**UPDATE:** Today I reset my mac to the factory settings and the system installed Sonoma as the default OS. I have tried the terminal command networksetup
and it works fine. After updating again to Sequoia the problem appears again so I think the problem is directly related to this new update. Unfortunately, I can't find any info about deprecation or warnings on the man.

We have a "Apple Studio M1" with macOS 13.6.1 (Ventura) in one of our studios.
As the machine is little used but running 24/7, I've set it up as a CI-runner for our local GitLab instance (using
gitlab-runner
+tart
).
Mostly things work as expected.
However, every now and then, the machine becomes unreachable over the network.
That is:
- I **can** still ping
the machine
- trying to ssh
into the machine stalls
- open ssh
sessions become unresponsive
after a while (a couple of minutes), the system goes back to normal, and I can resume my work in the ssh
session (or login via ssh
again).
the gitlab-ci jobs are run within a virtual machine (tart
is using the *Virtualization.Framework*).
if a gitlab-ci job has been running during the network outage, it appears to keep running fine.
only, if it needs to access the network itself (e.g. because it installs something via brew
, or tries to download stuff otherwise,...) the job will fail with something like this:
$ which automake || brew install automake
automake not found
==> Fetching dependencies for automake: m4 and autoconf
==> Fetching m4
==> Downloading https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/homebrew-core/c8215d5f7473269cd331dcd8cd3ab38e7c26dfe9/Formula/m/m4.rb
curl: (6) Could not resolve host: raw.githubusercontent.com
the host has currently some problems with its monitor (it's behind an oldish KVM switch) and besides it is in another floor, so its impractical to check the situation directly at the machine.
on the plus side, this means that I am pretty sure that nobody is fuddling with the settings :-)
as i'm a linux guy by trade, i would like some advice on how to debug this issue (e.g. which logs to check, which tools to run,...)
my naive checks of some of the things like system.log revealed nothing.
e.g. i logged into the machine about an hour ago, and the connection stalled at about 11:45. it is now (12:05) reachable again, and the syslog says:

When I access my DFS share on a Windows machine it mounts the share and shows the folder TestData

Someone discussed a solution of setting the same search domain on a Mac machine as AD sets on Windows but that solution does not work for me.

My MacBook Pro running macOS 12.2.1, fails to connect to any Wi-Fi network after it has been asleep for some time.
I open my laptop assuming it will be connected still, which it is not, then when I go to reselect the network it should already be connected too, it connects for a couple seconds then disconnects.
I have to restart my MacBook just for it to hold it's connection.
I'm assuming this is a software bug, does anyone else have this issue?

What is Apple doing with UUCP? I found this post on the Apple forums by someone who noticed a UUCP user, but no one came forward with an explanation, so I'm hoping someone here will know.
I'm especially curious because /usr/share/*
falls under System Integrity Protection in El Capitan, which means I'll need to set up a separate UUCP implementation if I want to use it for my purposes — but it also suggests that, if Apple's shipping OS X with a UUCP that only they can use, they must be using it for *something.*
*ETA:* I've also found a launchd daemon at /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.uucp.plist
. It has Disabled
in the plist, so it won't be run by default, but other daemons could enable it programmatically without altering the plist. I'm also intrigued to see that it's in /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/
(and thus subject to SIP) rather than /Library/LaunchDaemons/
— it adds to my hunch that it's something Apple is using (or maybe was using, as patrix comments), rather than just a miscellaneous *nix tool they happened to include.

How to ensure newly created files on network drive are read-write for everyone?
------------------------------------------------------------------------
**In brief.**
When a user creates a document/file on the network server volume at /users/shared/"M C"/, the document ends up being editable only for the user who created it and Read-Only for everyone else. I need it be editable for everyone.
**Specifics**
With the client user Mac account 'AAA', a file is created on the networked drive in a folder called 'M C' in /users/shared. **The permissions for that newly created file will be Read-Write only for user 'AAA' and undesirably Read Only for the 2 other users listed: 'Staff' and 'Everyone'. I want it to be 'Read-Write' for everyone** (or preferably for only certain users but I'll settle for everyone right now)
Similarly, if a Mac user 'BBB', in the same way as 'AAA', connects to the server and creates a file, it will be Read-Write for 'BBB' but Read-Only for all other users. I need all newly created and edited files to be editable by all users. The files in that directory need be shared.
**Environment**
The client Mac runs macOS 13 (Ventura). The server runs macOS 12 (Monterey) but may upgrade it soon to macOS 15 (Sequoia).
User 'AAA' connects to server using their own (sharing only) Mac account on that server.
The folder 'M C' is shared: The folder 'M C' has been added to the list at System Settings > Sharing > File Sharing > Shared Folders. Its 'Get Info' window has 'Shared' ticked.
The folder 'M C' has Read-Write permissions listed for the users 'AAA', 'BBB', 'Staff', and 'Everyone'. This is shown in both 'Get Info' window and sharing control panel.
**What I've tried already**
I applied Read-Write permissions to the folder 'M C' for all users but that doesn't help. The contents are unaffected (as expected).
I applied Read-Write permissions to the folder 'M C' for all users and all contents but that doesn't help. Existing files will get Read-Write permissions for all users but thereafter, newly created files will be Read-Write only for 'AAA'.
Where possible, I tried making these changes in both the Finder's 'Get Info' window, and the System Settings > Sharing control panel.
In the System Settings > Sharing control panel, in desperation, for the folder 'M C', I even secondary-clicked it > Advanced Options > ticked 'Allow guest users', but that did not help. (Other options there are not ticked)
I have tried placing the folder in other locations (eg, server's home folder), but it makes no difference and I figure /users/shared/ ought be the safest option for this to work.
Can anyone help with this issue?

Sometime later, if either:

or
2. Your device finds another network with the same SSID, which does not have the same certificate (has no certificate or has a different certificate)
Will your iPhone/iPad alert you or will it quietly join without asking you about anything?

I would like to use my favourite torrent client, Transmission, over a VPN service but at the same time I do not want to direct any other traffic therethrough. That is, I want to use my VPN service only for torrenting with the Transmission client.
I intend to use NordVPN service and I am coming across 2 problems:
1. NordVPN offers IKEv2 and OpenVPN protocols on Mac and I'm not sure
whether and how I can connect to this VPN so that NOT all traffic is
directed therethrough. As for the IKEv2 settings in Mac's Network
Preferences, there is no "Send all traffic over VPN connection"
option to keep unchecked, like it is for L2TP VPN protocol on Mac.
As for the OpenVPN protocol, I'm not sure if this is possible with
Tunnelblick for example or other client.
2. Let's say I solve the first
problem and I'm connected to the VPN service without sending all the
traffic therethrough. How can I now make Transmission to use
that specific network interface whereon I'm connected to the VPN?
I searched Google and I have found some procedures/methods but I am none the wiser thereon.
E.g.:
1. Transmission Interface Binder - this one seems outdated
2. docker-transmission-openvpn - could be working but I am totally lost
hereon.
3. For Ubuntu , but perhaps could be employed on Mac too but I
have no idea on what they talk about there
4. Ditto
I should appreciate
some advice from the more experienced or knowledgeable
hereabout.

I know that with /etc/hosts I can totally block connection to a host, but it's not what I need here. As a minimum solution, if I were able to make a host never respond, but just keeps loading forever, it would work, too.

(MacBook pro 16" 2019 big sur [latest])
I have a problem with my wifi. I noticed that my browser gets "stuck" by not loading pages, or taking too long doing that (any browser).
I tested this using the command in the terminal:
I tested this on my android phone which is located right next to my macbook and connected to the same wifi network with a 100% success.
Can you please help me resolve the problem?
ping 8.8.8.8
and noticed that it misses packets every once in a while and then gets back to normal. sometimes this happens with big chunks of packets, and sometimes with 1-4.

I have a M2 MBP which Im having some issues with.
Under normal operation, it will connect to a wifi network with no issues - DHCP will assign an IP, DNS and router.
Every now and then, it suddenly drops the DHCP info, leaving me with no IP address, DNS servers or routing, and nothing I can do will get it working again on DHCP until it sorts itself out.
The MBP is connected to the wifi network, it just wont talk to the DHCP server.
It can remain in this state for several minutes before correcting itself - or I can set a manual IP address and Im back on the network immediately. Sometimes a reboot also fixes it, but not always.
I have his issue on multiple wifi networks that have nothing in common apart from this laptop - it even happens on my iPhones hotspot.
