I have a domain server mydomain.com and a DFS server which is part of mydomain.com. DFS server has a share with namespace //mydomain.com/Datashare, which points to a TestData folder inside the machine. TestData has a few files 1.txt, 2.txt. When I access my DFS share on a Windows machine it mounts the share and shows the folder TestData with files 1.txt and 2.txt. When I access the same share on my Mac machine it mounts the share and displays the TestData folder. however, it does not show any files inside this folder. Someone discussed a solution of setting the same search domain on a Mac machine as AD sets on Windows but that solution does not work for me.

I'm trying to connect to samba shares on a debian machine in the same network from a Mac running Ventura 13.4.1. It all works perfectly fine if I do CMD+K, and input the credentials there (like smb://user@serverIP) However, trying to connect via double-clicking the share under "Network" on Mac results in the error "The operation can't be completed because the original item can't be found". I installed avahi-deamon after which the server started to be discovered by mac automatically but I can't connect to it double-clicking the auto discovered share. I'm absolutely out of ideas.enter image description hereenter image description here

Permissions issue with shared folder using SMB. macOS can't open Linux files, but Linux can open macOS files without issue

Why can't the macOS machine open any files in the shared folder that were **transferred from the Linux machine**? The permissions seem to be correct. **The shared folder is located on the macOS machine** / it owns the shared folder. --- I have a shared folder on macOS Catalina (It's just the default Public folder) that can be accessed by an Ubuntu machine. The share is set up using SMB. If the Linux machine copies over a photo, text file, whatever into the shared folder, the macOS machine cannot open it. I get a permissions error. If the macOS machine does the same, the Linux machine has no problems whatsoever. I have tried many settings on macOS to no avail including "Apply to enclosed items". Here's a screenshot of all the sharing settings on macOS so you can see what I have done. Permissions issue The first screenshot shows the error when the admin account on macOS tries to open any file that was transferred from the Linux machine. The account has read/write permissions to the shared folder. Even if I copy a file to the macOS desktop, the error persists. The second screenshot shows Sharing settings in System Preferences. The blacked out parts are just the folder name and the two users who have access to said folder. One user is the macOS admin account, the other user is login credentials for the Linux machine. The third screenshot is details of the shared folder by right clicking > Get Info. - macOS Catalina is the machine sharing the folder - Ubuntu 20.0.4 can see the shared folder and use it without issue - The machines are connected on a local network - The Linux machine has it's own login credentials to the shared folder that were set up on the mac. It is not using a "guest" account.

Running Big Sur 11.5 and trying to use File Sharing to access my drive on my local network. I only wish to allow the primary user access so I set the permissions accordingly ("everyone" has no access). However, after ~1 day (hard to figure out exactly when), the permissions will revert, allowing anyone read access which is the default setting. This occurs without rebooting, the only operations being connecting to the SMB share and waiting some amount of time. Is there something I'm doing wrong with the configuration? I've looked into alternative network file sharing servers (even just brew install samba) but can't find anything with good documentation besides the native SMB file sharing.

I've tried accessing my macOS 15.3 SMB shares from Windows 10 without success. "Windows sharing" is enabled in macOS. I get a login prompt but it says the credentials are wrong every time. I know they're not. What I tried: - Username with and without workgroup, i.e: WORKGROUP\username and username - Connecting using smb://{ip address, mDNS hostname}, \\netbiosname, netbiosname in Explorer's address field... Every variation I could think of. - Connected to other SMB shares on the network, e.g. \\rpi.local, which worked - Connecting in the other direction (from macOS) which I could not make work either What else is there to try?

My desktop Mac mini (2018) shares files to other computers on the network. I've set it up in System Preferences > Sharing so that only known users can connect, with their username and password. If I go to restart my Mini, I sometimes get a message to say that 1 or more users are connected. **Is there an easy way to find out which users are connected?** I used to use Server.app, and it would be easy to use that (or serveradmin on the CLI) to determine who was logged in. But since Server has been 'withdrawn', it doesn't seem so easy. I'm on Mojave. last |grep "logged in" gives: Ben ttys000 Sun Jun 7 15:24 still logged in Ben console Sun Jun 7 15:22 still logged in which doesn't seem to include current AFP connected users, as suggested by the recommended article. Nor does it give those connected to TM sharing or other connections; however, those can be gleaned from Activity Monitor. netstat -na |grep 139 just gives me a bunch of IP6 addresses. tcp6 0 0 fe80::18cf:f908:.51390 fe80::cab:3d08:d.61984 ESTABLISHED tcp6 0 0 fe80::18cf:f908:.61391 fe80::cab:3d08:d.61898 CLOSE_WAIT tcp6 0 0 fe80::18cf:f908:.54029 fe80::cab:3d08:d.61394 CLOSE_WAIT tcp6 0 0 fe80::18cf:f908:.64954 fe80::cab:3d08:d.56139 CLOSE_WAIT tcp6 0 0 fe80::18cf:f908:.50799 fe80::cab:3d08:d.51394 CLOSE_WAIT tcp6 0 0 fe80::18cf:f908:.52279 fe80::cab:3d08:d.61394 CLOSE_WAIT 6f249e60a5b12c27 stream 0 0 0 6f249e60a5b1396f 0 0 6f249e60a5b1396f stream 0 0 0 6f249e60a5b12c27 0 0 The best I've found is: netstat -f inet -n | grep '.548 ' | awk '{ print $5 }' | sed 's/\.[^.]*$//' which gives me IP4 addresses for all connections except SMB. Ideally, something that lists the connection type and username would be ideal, but it does seem that this is going to require a script rather than a one-liner.

The file sharing dialog has confused me in every version of macOS I've used so far (Mojave, Ventura, Sonoma...) and I would like to understand the situation better. In advanced sharing settings (System Settings > General > Sharing > File sharing (i) > Options...) there is a concept called "Windows File Sharing" or "Windows sharing" that, for some reason, appears to be treated separately from simply "SMB sharing". #### Question By "Windows sharing", is macOS referring to something **distinct from SMB sharing?** I can't but conclude that it is, but **what then, more concretely, is this referring to?** I would've thought that the two terms "Windows sharing" and "SMB sharing" were generally used synonymously -- especially in an Apple context. I guess that in other words I'm asking: In macOS, does SMB sharing *without activating Windows sharing* imply "SMB sharing *with other Macs only*"? I find it difficult to tell, and so I can't adjust my expectations accordingly. ### Background I have many SMB clients that I currently have no idea what to expect from. For example: - Debian 13 - Ubuntu 24.10 (same client as Debian most likely) - Windows 10 - App-integrated SMB client libraries (like Kodi 21, and some iOS apps) None of them appears to be able to access macOS SMB shares without "Windows sharing". Should any of them work? I can't tell. Compound this with that I can access macOS SMB shares from other macOS systems, and it's clear that the shares do work -- just not for any OS but macOS (and, sometimes, iOS). ##### Forget about it Why not just enable "Windows sharing" and forget about it? Because... - I still wouldn't understand the situation, which I want to do. It suggests a gap in my knowledge that I would like to fill. - It gives me the impression that my non-macOS SMB clients are configured to be needlessly insecure. This suggests that they might not be configured properly, period. I'd like to find out if this is the case. - If storing passwords "less securely" is not a noteworthy detail, then surely Apple wouldn't have bothered to clutter their UI with the note. Therefore I can assume it's worth finding out more. *My knowledge level is: "Not an SMB expert" -- I have at most enabled some vfs modules in Linux Samba configurations (e.g. to allow TimeMachine to use shares as targets, and allow iOS to copy files to a share). I'm not familiar with its deeper intricacies.*

I have my Macbook Pro (MacOS Mojave) connecting to an NFS share on a Linux machine directly connected via Thunderbolt with jumbo frames. Testing with iperf3, I can do ~14 Gbps (~1.8 GBps) over the connection, so I expect that network is not the bottleneck. Here is the /etc/exports:
/srv/share         169.254.0.*(rw,sync,insecure,rw,all_squash,anonuid=1000,anongid=1000,no_subtree_check)
Doing some simple testing with dd, here is what I see: ### Direct to disk on the server (~800MB/s)
~$ dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp/testfile bs=5120 count=100000
100000+0 records in
100000+0 records out
512000000 bytes (512 MB, 488 MiB) copied, 0.62477 s, 820 MB/s
### NFS from the server (~660 MB/s) I connected a client on the server to see how it performed with a Linux client and taking the network out of the equation.
$ sudo mount -t nfs -o rw 169.254.0.1:/srv/share /tmp/share
$ nfsstat -m
/tmp/share from 169.254.0.1:/srv/share
 Flags:	rw,relatime,vers=4.2,rsize=1048576,wsize=1048576,namlen=255,hard,proto=tcp,timeo=600,retrans=2,sec=sys,clientaddr=169.254.0.1,local_lock=none,addr=169.254.0.1

100000+0 records out
512000000 bytes (512 MB, 488 MiB) copied, 0.76516 s, 669 MB/s
### From Macbook Pro over Thunderbolt (~150MBps) I tried to match the default NFS client connection from Linux, but the Mac client doesn't support the same options. I've tried vers=3 and even async, but am never able to get it much faster than this.
$ sudo mount -t nfs -o rw,vers=4,rsize=1048576,wsize=1048576,hard,proto=tcp,timeo=600,retrans=2,sec=sys 169.254.0.1:/srv/share /srv/share

     File system locations:

$ dd if=/dev/zero of=/srv/share/testfile bs=5120 count=10000
10000+0 records in
10000+0 records out
51200000 bytes transferred in 0.337533 secs (151688873 bytes/sec)
--- Given how fast the network is, it seems like I should be able to get 3-4x the speeds I'm seeing from the Mac. How can I improve the performance?

Before upgrading to Mavericks, I had a "Sharing only" account called "Shared" with a password, which I used to allow other computers to connect to my Mac. However, since upgrading to Mavericks, this account no longer appears in the "Users & Groups" System Preferences pane. I believe this is because it conflicted with the built-in "Shared" folder in /Users/Shared, so Mavericks probably had trouble with this account when upgrading OS X. However, the account itself still works, with my old password. Is there a way to delete this account, even if it doesn't appear in "Users & Groups", without deleting the /Users/Shared folder (which is separate; the folder is part of OS X, and my "Sharing only" account has no Home folder).

On a new M4 Mini with Sequoia 15.2 (24C101) I'm trying to share a USB printer. But unless the computer has a user account with a username matching the username from the incoming request, CUPS rejects the job. Print sharing is enabled in Settings > General > Sharing > Printer Sharing, and the printer is checked for sharing, and the permissions are that "Everyone" "Can Print". I've enabled debug logging with cupsctl and here's the relevant portion of the log: D [07/Jan/2025:21:45:28 -0500] [Client 13] 2.0 Create-Job 3 D [07/Jan/2025:21:45:28 -0500] Create-Job ipps://Mac-mini.local.:631/printers/EPSON_Stylus_Photo_R2880 D [07/Jan/2025:21:45:28 -0500] check_quotas: UUID lookup failed for user "bames53" I [07/Jan/2025:21:45:28 -0500] Denying user "bames53" access to printer "EPSON_Stylus_Photo_R2880" (unknown user)... D [07/Jan/2025:21:45:28 -0500] Create-Job client-error-not-authorized: Not allowed to print. E [07/Jan/2025:21:45:28 -0500] [Client 13] Returning IPP client-error-not-authorized for Create-Job (ipps://Mac-mini.local.:631/printers/EPSON_Stylus_Photo_R2880) from [v1.fe80::10:b08d:dd81:36e9+en0]. The computer sharing the printer can print fine. So the printer works, the USB connection works. The drivers are updated. If I create, on the computer sharing the printer, a user with a username matching the remote user trying to print, even if the passwords don't match, then there's no error and print sharing works fine. So I believe this rules out any issues with the network, firewalls, etc. Also installing a Print-to-PDF printer from the app store and sharing that shows precisely the same behavior and error, so the particular printer is not the issue. Also the behavior is the same regardless of the client computer trying to print, both Mac and Windows clients. Looking at cups configuration files, quotas appear to be disabled on /etc/cups/printers.conf: QuotaPeriod 0 PageLimit 0 KLimit 0 AI suggested also adding a Enabled No section to the cupsd.conf file, which did not change the error. Also adding Allow @LOCAL and Allow all to the various `` sections that cover Create-Job did not change the behavior. Apple Support suggested adding Sandboxing Relaxed to cups-files.conf, also with no change. I see a someone else had the same issue in 2010 on Apple's support forums, with no solution: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2426299?login=true&sortBy=rank Configuring other macs with printer sharing similarly does not exhibit the same error. The work-around of creating a dummy account with matching name might almost be acceptable at this point, but it doesn't work to allow windows computers to print, because the username they send contains a backslash (domain\username). Here's a screenshot of the printer sharing panel with user list: ![](https://i.imgur.com/qgtPMvc.jpeg)

I installed a Mac on my home network. I have an HP Laserjet 553 printer that I use to print to from Windows and Linux (Fedora). **The printer is shared on the Mac and works fine when printing directly from the Mac.** The Linux computer finds the printer and allows me to configure it. When I run:
lpstat -p
I get: printer Color_LaserJet_M553 is idle. But when I print, I get the following error: E [04/Jan/2025:13:18:48 -0600] [Client 326] Returning IPP client-error-not-authorized for Create-Job (ipps://Susans-iMac.local:631/printers/HP_Color_LaserJet_M553__7E8380__2) from 192.168.86.25. and the file does not print. Here is what I get from lpstat -s: dnssd://HP%20Color%20LaserJet%20M553%20%5B7E8380%5D%20%40%20Susan%E2%80%99s%20iMac._ipp._tcp.local/cups?uuid=64e79165-56b3-3da8-6381-9184b421f66c I could print from Linux before connecting the Mac.

I noticed whenever I'm in mobile safari about to share a webpage that has text selected if I select the share for Messages app it embeds a quote of the selected text like seen in the first image below which has the quote > Today's news reinforces that doing it the hard way was the right decision. However if I share the same selected text and website in the Notes app the quote is absent. Is there a configuration or some means to accomplish getting the quote embedded like how the Messages app does it? selected text shared as quote in messages webpage shared in notes

Mac mini m4, macOS Sequoia apache httpd webdav nfs Both httpd and nfsd work well when I share a directory on internal storage like /Users/abc/share. When I share a directory on usb external storage like /Volumes/udisk/share, both httpd and nfsd raised errors like "can not read /Volumes/udisk/share" and "not permitted". The exteranl storage file system is APFS. The owner user:group of /Volumes/udisk/share is abc:staff, the same as /Users/abc/share, and file mode is 777. The only difference is internal/external storage. Does accessing external storage require additional authorization? How can I resolve this issue? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
