I use a Synology NAS to backup my family's MacBooks. Two are still working fine, but one of them was unable to make a backup for about a week. Because the other two MacBooks are still fine I am pretty sure that the issue is not related to the recent MacOS update nor to the recent Synology firmware update.

in this example) is always different on each try. And it is always created at the time the backup attempt started. And it always contains only one empty folder called time-machine

What I tried so far:
* Run hard disk tests on the Synology NAS (all HDDs are fine)
* Disabled and enabled Time Machine
* Run Disk Utility – First Aid on all disks
* Manually deleted all existing folders in /Volumes/.timemachine/Synology._smb._tcp.local./
* Told Time Machine to remove the existing backup and start from scratch
* Rebooted the Mac a couple of times
None of that made a difference. Any idea how to fix this issue?

**Problem:**
I have an almost 2TB Apple Photos library already downloaded onto an external drive. I wanted to migrate this library into Synology Photos without re-downloading it from the internet. Exporting originals from Apple Photos was too time-consuming and impractical. After some investigation, I discovered that the
.photoslibrary
file is essentially a regular folder containing an SQLite database and the original images and videos. So, I moved this file to my Synology NAS.
**Expected Outcome:**
I wanted to move the media files from the .photoslibrary/originals
directory into home/Photos
on my NAS, organized in a %Y/%m/%d
directory hierarchy. Ideally I would like to keep as much as possible metadata from Apple Photos.
**Solution:**
I created a program that:
1. Recursively loops through all files inside the originals
directory.
2. Queries a CSV file (exported from the ZASSET
table in the Apple Photos SQLite database). The CSV contains two columns: ZFILENAME
and ZDATECREATED
.
3. Converts ZDATECREATED
into %Y/%m/%d
format and creates/selects the appropriate folder inside home/Photos
.
4. Moves the file into that directory.
**Shortcomings:**
A significant number of files in the originals
directory have _2
, _3
suffixes before the extension, and the database does not have ZASSET
records for these files. How should I handle these?
In general, I'd like to hear suggestions from anyone who has done a similar migration of their Apple Photos library to Synology Photos. What is the best method with the least metadata loss?

I am trying to find out why my MacBook Pro will not connect to my QNAP NAS. When attempting to use Finder in macOS to access the files on the NAS, it tries to connect but fails each time.
When attempting to click "Connect As..." at the top right of the Finder window, it simply attempts to connect again without prompting you for a username and password as it typically would in the past.
Things that I can confirm:
- All other computers on my network (Windows and Linux) are able to access the NAS
- The MacBook has been able to connect to the NAS successfully in the past with no problems, however, I don't recall how far back it stopped working
- I can ping the NAS IP Address from the MacBook
- I have ensured that the NAS settings have Apple file sharing protocols enabled
- The NAS does appear in the Finder window's sidebar, you just cannot access it.
Equipment:
- MacBook Pro (Mid 2015) running macOS Catalina 10.15.4.
- QNAP TS-251 NAS w/ most recent updates.

I can see the device on the network and I can open it and select a share. But when I try to mount the share, I get the following error:
"The operation can’t be completed because the original item for “Foo” can’t be found"
I think this is because my little NAS changed to a new IP and OS X somehow cached the original (alias?) somewhere.
The fact that I can successfully open these shares from another Mac, which had never seen these before, confirms that I think.
Does anyone know where this is potentially cached? Is there anything I can reset or throw away to get past this error?

On Monterey 12.7.4, I have used Time Machine to back up to an external hard drive. However, I would like to set up an additional network backup location so I don't have to remember to plug in my external drive. I have set up the samba share that I intend to use and am able to mount the share successfully on my mac. I see that I have read and write privileges and am able to create files and folders (
ls -l
shows drwx------
). I am also able to view the share in Time Machine, and have set up Time Machine to use the share as an additional backup location. When I run Time Machine, it begins to run and see that a sparsebundle is created on share.
However, seconds later, the backup fails and an exclamation mark appears next to the share location stating "Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to "my share" The backup disk image could not be created." How can I fix this error and get backups working properly? I am especially perplexed because the sparsebundle does briefly appear in Finder and then quickly disappears at the time the backup fails.

Nevertheless, I can login into the NAS using SSH and I can see the files:
nas% ls /mnt/uloziste/macbackup/mini/vladak/
.apdisk .DS_Store Vladimir’s Mac mini.sparsebundle/
nas% ls /mnt/uloziste/macbackup/mini/vladak/Vladimir’s\ Mac\ mini.sparsebundle/

com.apple.TimeMachine.MachineID.bckup com.apple.TimeMachine.SnapshotHistory.plist token
com.apple.TimeMachine.MachineID.plist Info.bckup
How do I transfer these files to a USB drive (formatted as Mac OS Extended) so that the Recovery mode will recognize it as a Time machine drive and will be able to recover from it ?

I have a MacBook Pro 2017 that was sent for replacement. The system was always synced with Time Machine.
I have a temporary MacBook Pro 2017 I am trying to restore to, but I can't get it to work.
The Time Machine backup is on a NAS partition (Synology DS216).
The path from the NAS' perspective is:
> smb://SynologyDS216/volume1/TimeMachine
The path from Finder's perspective is:
> smb://SynologyDS216._smb._tcp.local/TimeMachine
I reboot the computer to macOS Recovery, it finds the NAS, I can connect to the partition providing the username / password, and then nothing happens from there. It stays on the same screen.
It is the same behavior whether I try to use the auto detected path, the NAS' path, or the path Finder creates.
No backup appears.
When I connected with the original Mac, through Time Machine, I can see the files, the history, etc. so the files are there.
Now I have two questions:
- Is there such a thing as a 'machine backup' vs. 'just some folders backup'? I had a lot of folders exclusion in my Time Machine settings, so maybe the files are there but not the OS.
- If I connect to this backup through Time Machine, instead of the system restore/migration, is there a way to connect as read-only so the temporary computer will not start to edit the backup?
As a side note, the backup is from macOS Catalina (on a MacBook Pro 2017 15") and the temp laptop is running macOS High Sierra (on a MacBook Pro 2017 13"), if that makes a difference.

Edit:
Is there a way to translate this to the IP address of the NAS or otherwise learn this information?
Is there any way to find out the IP address of the NAS which is used to mount this share?
The tricky part is that my NAS can be reached on two different IP addresses (direct wired 1Gbps and wireless through my router).
On different sessions from the transfer speeds alone I have concluded that either of the IP addresses were in use. So I can't definitely tell to which of the two addresses I am connected for the SMB sharing.
The host
command didn't works only with the wireless interface. I have also tried lsof -i -n
but it shows no SMB related connections.
I hoped that smbutil lookup nas-smb
could tell me what I want, but it doesn't. When the speeds show that the wired interface is in use, it still returns the address of the wireless interface.
Thanks!

Question relates to the desktop icon for a mounted networked drive.
MacOS 10.14.6 - Seagate NAS SMB - Computer stays on and is set to never sleep. Airport Extreme.
I mount the drive/volume and I get an icon. I put the icon in a specific location and then at some point it moves to first available location on desktop. How can I make it stay where I put it? It's not a huge thing but it is annoying.
Every other icon on my desktop stays where I put it (Time Capsule drives, Time Machine USB drive, internal drive, files, folders, etc.)
My hunch is that the connection to the drive times out and then automatically reconnects, during this process the icon goes away (connection to drive ends) and then comes back and goes to first open location (connection to drive is re-established).
Any ideas on how to keep my NAS drive/volume icon where I put it?

After making an initial Time Machine backup to this device I wanted to mount the resulting (encrypted) disk image but when doing so I just received an error message "Resource temporarily unavailable". Googling this error message returned a lot of Voodoo fixes. However, after playing around a bit, restarting a few times etc I realised that I had something called Time Machine service enabled for this share. Turning this service off immediately made the disk image available as expected.

I have been looking for a nice two-pane file manager (like [Total Commander](https://www.ghisler.com)) and like [Marta](https://marta.sh) - super sleek and slim, does what I need... except for accessing my network drives.
In finder, I can see my network drives under "locations" and from there browse their file system. I haven't been able to find them in Marta. Sorry if this is a stupid question, I am not very experienced on MacOs.
I tried creating an alias on the desktop (that would be an awkward workaround...), but opening that in Marta actually calls Finder :-(
I wonder if I am missing something... or if Marta misses this key feature?
*(BTW, I am aware this is a very specific question for stackexchange... but was not able to find any community for Marta)*

I was experimenting with iMazing doing backups to my old Zyxl Nas542.
I did tests with AFP, SMB and NFS. Everything was dead slow.
After a while I found out the SMB performance on the Mac is low but could be fixed by setting
[default]
signing_required=no
in a newly created
sudo vi /etc/nsmb.conf
and a reboot of the Mac.
I got 116Mb/s for write and 75Mb/s for read on SMB3. Before write performance was at 2,5Mb/s
Anyway, as the Backup writes a lot of small files and folders performance didn't improve on either protocol.
75GB Backup took still several hours.
So I gave up.
This morning I created a growable disk image (sparseimage) on the SMB mount with AFPS format. Then tried to create a backup there and the first backup finished in about 45min for 75GB.
Subsequent backups didn't finish before too, now finish in about 10min.
So is there anything I should be aware of using sparseimage for backup or is there anything else better to improve the backup to then as?

I am using El Capitan (latest version) on a Mac Mini and have setup a shared drive to my Synology NAS. The connection uses SMB (have also tried AFP).
Problem: after a period of time (hours / days) the network share will disappear.
What I have tried so far: I have added the share to my login items under System Prefs > Users & Groups - this works, in that when I logon to the Mac Mini the shares are added. However it does not stop the shares disappearing later.
I have also put the connection username & password into my keychain so that the Mac remembers. This also works, because when I re-add the share I don't have to provide username or password.
The Mac Mini is used as a media server (Plex) and all my media is on the NAS. This means that when Plex is used, we get occasions where Plex says there is no media. The NAS is not powerful enough to run Plex itself.

Can I use a MacBook as a server with the lid closed?
I have an old MacBook laying around, and I wonder if it's possible to use it safely when the lid is closed? I want to run it as a network device, store files in my home network on it etc. Is there a way to use it just plugged in to power and ethernet, close the lid and let it run as a server?

After the upgrade my Mac cannot access ANY homelab's service webpages from MBP, because browsers (Firefox, Safari, Chrome, etc.) consider they are unsafe:
I know those services provide self-signed certificates only and macOS consider they are "unsafe", but they have been running, used by myself for years and all can be opened on macOS 14, and all my Windows/mobile devices can access them without any issues. I believe there must be some security settings changed on macOS 15 and I would like to seek for help on configuration on this, thanks!

I would like use (read/write) those PSTs from my Mac using MS Outlook for Mac. (The PST would be open by one and only one Outlook instance at a time.)
Can I open (**not import**) such a PST from my Mac using MS Outlook for Mac and, if so, how?
