I’m using an iPhone 13. Yesterday, I received an automatic update prompt for iOS 18.x. I believe I was previously on iOS 17, although I did not pay close attention to the exact version. Since the update was taking a while, I left the phone connected to a charger and stepped away for a bit. When I came back, the phone was stuck on the black restore screen showing the cable and computer icon. I have tried force restarting it several times, but it keeps returning to that screen. I then connected it to iTunes (version 12.13.7.1 on Windows 10) and used the "Update" option. Unfortunately, the update fails after about 10 to 15 minutes. After failed "Update", currently iPhone is simply displaying the Apple logo with a progress bar which is stuck as shown in the screenshot below: enter image description here On top of that, iTunes keeps filling up my disk with temporary files located at C:\ProgramData\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Temporary Files 1 ... 8, which I had to manually delete to free up space. #### Is there any way to fix this and restore the phone without losing my data? The update was triggered automatically, and I did not make any manual changes. It seems like a bug with iOS, and now I am stuck without a working phone. I also noticed that the name of the .ipsw file is not labeled as iPhone 13. Instead, it is named iPhone14,5_18.5_22F76_Restore.ipsw, which I found a bit confusing.

Latest macOS Sequoia. tmutil version 4.0.0 (built Apr 22 2025) Because I am remote at the moment, I would like to use the command line tmutil to restore one folder (with many subfolders) on my computer to the state that it had 24 hours ago. since its 2025-06-10, this means 2025-06-09. I first want to restore the folder (/Users/me/Sync) to /tmp/ then inspect it, and if it is what I want, replace the current bad folder Sync with the good backup folder Sync. Started out well:
$ sudo bash
# tmutil listlocalsnapshots /
Snapshots for disk /:
com.apple.TimeMachine.2025-05-31-122127.local
com.apple.TimeMachine.2025-06-09-042552.local
com.apple.TimeMachine.2025-06-09-052552.local
com.apple.TimeMachine.2025-06-09-062552.local
com.apple.TimeMachine.2025-06-09-072552.local
good start. Using /bin/df, I can infer that there are a whole lot of volumes, none with 2025-06-09, though, so I hope TM built the 2025-06-09's on top of the earlier one somehow. It is a bit odd that the 2025-05-31 one has a different time stamp in the df version, one 122127 in the list, but 122147 .
# df | grep 2025-0
...
com.apple.TimeMachine.2025-05-31-122147.backup@/dev/disk7s2 3907025072 752036512 3089037832 20% 1067260 15445189160 0% /Volumes/.timemachine/708C5462-0DBA-483C-9AED-590D75ADC0A0/2025-05-31-122147.backup
...
ok, let's try to restore:
# mkdir /tmp/SSS
# tmutil restore "/Volumes/com.apple.TimeMachine.localsnapshots/Backups.backupdb/puck2025/2025-06-09-20255.local/Data/Users/me/Sync" "/tmp/SSS/"
/Volumes/com.apple.TimeMachine.localsnapshots/Backups.backupdb/puck2025/2025-06-09-20255.local/Data/Users/ivo/Sync: The operation couldn’t be completed. No such file or directory (error 2)
Restore failed
The error is pretty nondescript. There is more than enough space on the volume itself, and I just created the destination, so this is probably not it. It's probably my description of the source. so, I then tried a number of variations of this, with and without quotes, with the 2025-05-31-122127 and the oddly slightly different 2025-05-31-122147 , but always the same error. is there a more up-to-date guide to tmutil with working examples, or a way to elicit valid source listings, as in ls? pointers appreciated.

How do I transfer these files to a USB drive (formatted as Mac OS Extended) so that the Recovery mode will recognize it as a Time machine drive and will be able to recover from it ?

I have a MacBook Pro 2017 that was sent for replacement. The system was always synced with Time Machine. I have a temporary MacBook Pro 2017 I am trying to restore to, but I can't get it to work. The Time Machine backup is on a NAS partition (Synology DS216). The path from the NAS' perspective is: > smb://SynologyDS216/volume1/TimeMachine The path from Finder's perspective is: > smb://SynologyDS216._smb._tcp.local/TimeMachine I reboot the computer to macOS Recovery, it finds the NAS, I can connect to the partition providing the username / password, and then nothing happens from there. It stays on the same screen. enter image description here It is the same behavior whether I try to use the auto detected path, the NAS' path, or the path Finder creates. No backup appears. When I connected with the original Mac, through Time Machine, I can see the files, the history, etc. so the files are there. Now I have two questions: - Is there such a thing as a 'machine backup' vs. 'just some folders backup'? I had a lot of folders exclusion in my Time Machine settings, so maybe the files are there but not the OS. - If I connect to this backup through Time Machine, instead of the system restore/migration, is there a way to connect as read-only so the temporary computer will not start to edit the backup? As a side note, the backup is from macOS Catalina (on a MacBook Pro 2017 15") and the temp laptop is running macOS High Sierra (on a MacBook Pro 2017 13"), if that makes a difference.

I want to restore my external USB drive to a new drive from a Time Machine backup. I used sudo tmutil associatedisk as was suggested in this answer to a similar question . The actual restoring worked well and I could also associate the new disk to the old backup, however I could only associate it to one snapshot at a time. A comment suggested using the -a flag, as per the man page: thermopylae:~ thoth$ sudo tmutil associatedisk [-a] "/Volumes/MyNewStuffDisk" "/Volumes/Chronoton/Backups.backupdb/thermopylae/Latest/MyStuff" The result of the above command would associate the volume store MyStuff in the specified backup with the source volume MyNewStuffDisk. The volume store would also be renamed to match. The -a option tells associatedisk to find all volume stores in the same machine directory that match the identity of MyStuff, and then perform the association on all of them. However I can't get it to work. When I run sudo tmutil associatedisk -a "/Volumes/My Drive" "/Volumes/Time Machine/Backups.backupdb/My Macbook/Latest/My Drive" I only get the usage message printed Usage: tmutil associatedisk [-a] mount_point volume_backup_directory A local volume mount point and a snapshot volume path are required. I am sure that I used the correct mount_point and volume_backup_directory, because when I run the command without the -a flag the association works – with the caveat being that while I can view that specific snapshot of the drive when browsing Time Machine backups, the (new) drive is still not included when backing up. I am out of ideas here, because I can not see my error in using the command and I can't seem to find anyone who has had a similar problem. Any ideas would be appreciated. I would like to keep the drive history, but if that is not possible (i.e. if I can only associate the most recent snapshot) then most importantly I need Time Machine to recognise that it should keep backing up this drive. If this is important: As a last ditch idea I also tried using the command with [-a] instead of -a but that only yielded the result zsh: no matches found: [-a] with the backup then being un-associated again. **Edit:** The external disk is formatted as HFS+ (so is the Time Machine disk, as to my knowledge Time Machine does not work with APFS-formatted disks), I am using macOS Ventura 13.2.1 on an M2 MacBook Air.

I automatically back up my Mac to an attached external drive with Time Machine. But just in case something bad happens to both at the same time (flood, theft, rm rf /, etc.) I'd like to store a cloud backup as well, with the plan being that I download it onto a hard drive and restore my Mac to it, just like I could do from a normal Time Machine drive. I could make a disk image of the entire drive and upload that, but this would take a lot of space, and I don't want to pay for more cloud storage than I have to. I want to upload only the most recent snapshot. I could clone the drive to another one, delete all older snapshots on that one only, then make an image of that second disk, but that's a pain. Surely there's an easier way to do this? (I tried making a tarball of just one snapshot, but that seems to get corrupted in some way.)

I had to reformat an external raid drive (called *Joshua*) after expanding its size. After reformatting it, I restored it from our TM drive (called *Moses*). However once everything is copied over and I go to back it up, TM wants to call the new drive *Joshua 1*, and of course take up the full space of the drive. I should mention at this point, that we are on a 2023 MacMini M2 Pro, with Sonoma 14.5. This seems to be significant because the recent versions of MacOS format a TM drive as APFS by default. For some reason, inheritbackup and associatedisk do not work with APFS, or if they do, it is not well documented. https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/375894/inheriting-time-machine-backup-invalid-target/376133#376133 mentions a way to resolve moving time machine from one Mac to another. This case is somewhat different in that I am "merely" trying to get TM to recognize the "Old" Joshua backup as being the same as the "New" Joshua's data. As this other post suggests trying, I got the extended metadata from the respective folders so that hopefully I can write new metadata. For some reason, though if I put xattr -l /volumes/Joshua into terminal, it does not give me any metadata. Not sure if I am doing it wrong, or if Joshua simply doesn't have any metadata. I put the UUID metadata from the TM backups into a spreadsheet (I have two backups that I pulled data from; and a third backup that I am keeping offline for safety reasons.) I can't seem to bring the screenshot in, but com.apple.backupd.SnapshotVolumeUUID are identical for the old Joshua between Moses and OffsiteBackup. I thought I found what I needed; however, the com.apple.backupd.SnapshotVolumeUUID for the new Joshua are different for Moses and OffsiteBackup. My ultimate goal is to get Moses (and the other offsite backups) to associate the "new" Joshua with the backup data for the "old" Joshua. 1. I have not been able to get inheritbackup or associatedisk to work; and my research indicates that this is due to the TM drives using APFS. Is this correct? 2. Is com.apple.backupd.SnapshotVolumeUUID the "magical" metadata that I need to change to get Moses to recognize the "new" Joshua in place of the "old"? Or is there something else? And how do I get xattr to show me what the metadata for the new /Volumes/Joshua? TM will be busy restoring data for most of the weekend, but I'll be monitoring this post over the weekend. Thank you for any help you can give.

I then open up iTunes and still get a "an iPhone was detected in recovery mode" error. My iPhone shows the frustrating image of the USB cable plugging into iTunes. What could I be doing wrong? I'm at my wits end here. Thanks.

0 I know absolutely nothing about installing firmware onto devices and have been struggling for hours to get my Mac Studio to restore an old iPod Shuffle 4th gen I (regrettably) erased (yes... ouch) and may never get the 1.0.2 OS back onto it. Unfortunately, Apple no longer supports the iPod shuffle so the server for the software also no longer exists for any of my Macs go fetch it from to restore the iPod. I did, however, find these [pictured in screen grab] items and need to know how, and if, I can use them to get the firmware/software back onto the iPod so I can load music onto it with Apple Music. Yes, I also realize I can put music on my iPhone, but I have a BluTooth speaker that I want to just plug a little MP3 player into to shuffle a few hours of music at a time without tying up my phone. NOTE: I have ZERO experience using Terminal, so please be patient with your explanations. In case you can't see the screen grab, the filename is "iPod_135.1.0.2.ips" and one just like it with "Documentation" and .ipd plus a sticky with a SHA1 Hash string of characters that I imagine is some sort of key.

I am trying to clone my 2016 Mac running Mojave 10.14.6 to an external disk. It runs for a good few hours and then eventually tells me that it failed because it "Could not fix UUIDs for APFS volumes". I am following [this guide](https://mactakeawaydata.com/clone-mac-boot-drive/) to do it - boot to recovery mode, erase the external drive, then restore the internal drive to the external drive. I tried it twice, both times the same thing happened. Is this an issue with the external disk being bigger than the internal drive? (The internal drive is 1Tb, the external disk in a 2Tb Crucial X9 SSD). Would a different external drive be more likely to work? What can I try to resolve this problem? Thanks!

Does anyone have experience restoring email from a Time Machine backup? This was easier in earlier versions of MacOS, when Time Machine provided a UI through the Mail program itself. Now it seems to be necessary to go spelunking through the
~/Library/Mail
folder. This *almost* works for me, but I've run into an odd problem. Here's what I've done (running MacOS 13.1): 1. Go to
~/Library/Mail/V10
in Finder. 2. Enter Time Machine. 3. Go to the last backup that contains deleted messages. 4. Restore the
subdirectory corresponding to the account in question. 5. Exit Time Machine. 6. Open Mail. 7. Select
/Import
. 8. Select format:
Mail
9. Select the restored
subdirectory. 10. Select one or more mailboxes from the account to import. At this point, everything looks good. The selected mailbox(es) are restored to a local folder named
, and when I browse through them, everything seems to be in order. The problem appears when I try to move selected messages to another mailbox. (I want to do this because the messages are restored to a local mailbox, but originally came from a mailbox on an IMAP server.) After the move, every message that contained attachments appears to have lost all its content. The message body is blank, and even
... Raw Source
is blank.
... All Headers
shows only
(No Subject)
. Most messages without attachments are unaffected, but a few of these *may* be lost as well. Oddly enough, the same losage occurs when I just rebuild the imported mailbox. It's not clear if this is a bug, or if I'm doing something wrong. I'm sure I'm not the first person who's wanted to restore email from a backup, but I'm finding very little useful documentation on how to deal with this. Any suggestions much appreciated!

I'd like to try DFU mode for my iPad (A1709) recovery. Background: I was prompted to update iOS and experienced failures with repeated retry attempts. This wasn't a major issue, but I grew tired of the repeated failures and tried updating using: Apple Configurator Version 2.17 (9A15) Installed frameworks AirTrafficHost (4024.300.19) MobileDevice (1759.81.1) MacBook Pro 15-inch, 2019 MacOS Sequoia 15.3.1 (24D70) However, it failed with error code 9. That was the beginning of a nightmare.
RestoreOS device removed before restored completed [com.apple.MobileDevice.MobileRestore – 0x9 (9)]
Furthermore, my iPad got stuck in recovery mode. Updates and recovery attempts using Finder, multiple genuine cables, and even Windows+iTunes combinations all failed with error code 9, turning my beloved iPad (A1709) that I've used for years into just a piece of junk. I'd like to try DFU mode, but I can't get past recovery mode to a black screen. When I press the home button and power button for 10 seconds, the Apple logo appears. When I press the home button and power button for 8 seconds, then release the power button, the Apple logo appears after about 2 seconds. When I press the home button and power button for 5 seconds, then release the power button, the Apple logo appears after about 5 seconds. With every method, after the Apple logo, the recovery mode cable image appears on screen. I'd be fine with restoring to factory settings even if I can't update. Could you please teach me the steps to enter DFU mode or restore to factory settings? Or should I just give up? I have already tried these and get error 9. https://support.apple.com/en-us/102561 I have already discussed this with my support person but no good solution was suggested. I thought it would be good if I could overwrite it with an older OS that worked fine, but is that not possible?

I reset my iPad, and it resulted in me losing all my save progress on the games *Plants vs. Zombies 2* and *Pokémon GO*. I was hoping it would resolve itself automatically over time, but it hasn't. Is there a way to recover my save progress on these games after resetting my iPad?

How to supervise an unsupervised iOS device keeping the users Data?

I'm pretty new to the whole Apple story, so i'm not sure if this is possible at all. The story is that we have unsupervised corporate-owned iPhones at work. Now we are about to enroll an MDM (specific MobileIron) and the devices need to be in supervised mode. *What we tried so far:* Backup the iPhone (iTunes), supervise the device in Apple configurator 2, and push the backup back onto the iPhone. **Somehow** my Instructor managed to get it working: the iPhone was now supervised containing all user data. New day, new iPhone, he did all the same steps again (iTunes and iCloud Backup), an reproductibly we couldn't get the backup back to supervised mode. We've tried it with 3 iPhones 5s and on one iPad mini 2, it was either *wiped and supervised*, or it was only the *unsupervised* user backup. I've been searching https://discussions.apple.com and other boards since last friday, no success so far. What i found were instructions for new, wiped devices, which didn't help. My last hope is that you can help me solving this problem. **Is it possible to supervise a device without wiping it and restoring or keeping the users data for it?** Thanks folks!

I'm on a 2018 MBP running 10.15.7 (Catalina) I recently moved web hosting for a domain I have an email account on, but forgot to backup my email account's sent mail before I changed hosts, and it's gone at the old host now. Fortunately (or so I thought), I use TimeMachine and have for years! So I select my Sent Mail folder in Apple Mail, Enter Time Machine, and after a moment I'm greeted with all my sent mails. But, the Restore button is greyed out, and I also can't go back in time although I can scroll through on the right side and see all the many, many, many backups that are there (my archives go back to 2022 apparently). How can I get it to allow me to restore? It shows me the messages, all 200 of them (it wasn't a heavily used account, but an important one to me), I just can't click restore!

My iPod (4g iOS 6.1.6) is stuck in soft DFU mode because I quit out of redsn0w too early. Then I also used an app to exit recovery mode and now it's in soft DFU mode. I had to use the DFU IPSW in order to put my device in DFU mode in the first place. When I attempt to restore it in iTunes, after the "extracting software" step, the software says "preparing iPod for restore". After the 1-2 minutes, pass the boot logo does not show up and iTunes says "The iPod (iPod) could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1601)." I'm just going to try and let my iPod die and then reboot it. Any alternative suggestions on how to regain control of the device?
