I understand that Apple automatically updates the firmware for AirPods while charging when connected to an iPhone. I have some AirPods used only with Apple TV. Will those get updated as well? Or should I occasionally connect the AirPods to my iPhone (and leave charging)? Apple published the page [*About firmware updates for AirPods*](https://support.apple.com/en-us/106340) . That page lists current firmware version numbers. As for updating, it says: > Firmware updates are delivered automatically while your AirPods are charging and in Bluetooth range of your iPhone, iPad, or Mac that's connected to Wi-Fi. That document omits any mention of Apple TV. So I would conclude that Apple TV does not update firmware, but I thought I would ask for confirmation here.

Basically I am trying to install a brand new Aura Pro X2 480gb SSD into a Macbook Air 2014, the original apple SSD has failed and is not seen by the Macbook Air. I know the Aura Pro X2 requires High Sierra as the previous system so the firmware updates via the Macbook Air. But for some reason whenever I try to install High Sierra using a bootable installer via the Macbook Air, I get an error message stating that the computer is missing firmware partition on any device. I try to install High Sierra on to, been it a USB key or an external hard drive etc. Is there anyway I can get High Sierra installed via a USB or external hard drive so the firmware partition updates, so I can then see the new Auro Pro X2 480gb SSD and install new system on to it? I've tried formatting USB keys and hard drives in different ways but keep getting the missing firmware partition message on anything I do. I have an old 2008 Mac Pro and also a 2011 Mac mini, if those can be useful in anyway to solving this issue I have.

I have a 13" Macbook Pro 2016 non-touchbar with Intel i5 processor on it. The trouble with it that i can't get its firmware updated from 205.0.0.0.0 to the latest 499.40.2.0.0 The laptop was liquid damaged.Ii replaced the battery and keyboard together. The battery was used and came together with keyboard. There was no other problems seen when it works. So far this is what i tried -tried on a identical genuine apple ssd -disconnected the battery. -reset nvram -tried on a 3rd party sabrent ssd -installed all osxs available for this Mac from High Sierra to Ventura. All but Ventura successfully installs. All finished installing but goes to black screen at first reboot after the first online update downloaded and installed. It goes to black screen because the online update contains firmware update and the firmware update does not initiate. At this moment I can bring the laptop back alive pressing Shift Option Command and POWER buttons several times. Maybe the boot ROM attempts to update from a very low version to something much greater for it to handle. Can anyone send me a firmware update that is not the latest available but something in between 205... and 499...?

0 I know absolutely nothing about installing firmware onto devices and have been struggling for hours to get my Mac Studio to restore an old iPod Shuffle 4th gen I (regrettably) erased (yes... ouch) and may never get the 1.0.2 OS back onto it. Unfortunately, Apple no longer supports the iPod shuffle so the server for the software also no longer exists for any of my Macs go fetch it from to restore the iPod. I did, however, find these [pictured in screen grab] items and need to know how, and if, I can use them to get the firmware/software back onto the iPod so I can load music onto it with Apple Music. Yes, I also realize I can put music on my iPhone, but I have a BluTooth speaker that I want to just plug a little MP3 player into to shuffle a few hours of music at a time without tying up my phone. NOTE: I have ZERO experience using Terminal, so please be patient with your explanations. In case you can't see the screen grab, the filename is "iPod_135.1.0.2.ips" and one just like it with "Documentation" and .ipd plus a sticky with a SHA1 Hash string of characters that I imagine is some sort of key.

Do macOS updates update/reset firmware as well
If I’m not mistaken, on macOS, the firmware is integrated into the operating system. When a macOS update occurs, does it also automatically reset or update the firmware?

I had never used it until this morning, when trying to access from another partition I have to write it inevitably to be able to do anything; I can't even return to the primary boot partition anymore. The problem comes here. My password includes special characters, such a #. But I'm not able to write that or other characters, which the system allowed me to include when I configured the password.

This quote is the worry - and could be what bit me once already: > "In some cases, users have lost the ability to boot Windows due to EFI partition losing Microsoft boot files." And > "macOS updates now embed firmware updates, which primarily reside in > the EFI partition. It has the side effect of removing parts, that > should not be touched." From here Apple Discussions Our scenario is we have Intel iMacs that were all configured to have Boot Camp/Windows partition. Those that have basically never booted into Boot Camp are fully updated to latest Apple security and feature updates for MacOS. Those that *always* boot directly to Windows of course do not. We are trying to determine if it's reasonable or of any benefit to update the windows Macs to a new macOS. Can Mac updates to a Mac listed as iMac: Apple Inc. 1731.140.1.0.0 SMBIOS 3.3 Date: 5/3/2022 do anything on the firmware side or other that will break Boot Camp and render that useless, or worse, brick the iMac?

I've downloaded the correct .ipsw file and verified the sha1 checksum on [theiphonewiki.com](https://www.theiphonewiki.com/wiki/Firmware) . Will restoring from that wipe all the settings? (apps, network, home screen layout etc. etc.) and if so, is there any way I can back the settings up first? Remember I'm upgrading (from 14.3 to 14.8), not downgrading, should that make a difference… (I am currently running iTunes on macOS Mojave.) Thanks.

I logged out of my Macbook (pro 2019, Catalina) then after mistyping my password, accidentally hit the “recover password” button (or something along those lines, can’t remember). I do remember my password, so that’s not the issue. My Macbook then rebooted and took me to a black screen with a grey lock and a password prompt (which I learned was the firmware password page). I don’t remember ever setting a firmware password. I tried my regular login password, which didn’t work. I also tried any other password I could think of. None worked. I tried booting into recovery mode with command+r, but I still get the same screen. I think the issue could be that my Macbook is trying to boot into recovery mode (because I accidentally clicked to recover my password), but recovery mode requires the firmware password. And now I can’t get it to boot normally, without recovery mode. I tried following [these steps](https://windowsreport.com/mac/macbook-stuck-recovery-mode/) , but I always get the lockscreen. Is there a way to go back to how it was before, with the normal login screen (with my known password)?

I suppose that the HDD is dying, she would like to downgrade the OS, because she wants this computer to freeze to 10.10 to use only for Aperture. I think the easiest way to change the drives to a bigger SSD (the one in the mbp is an old 128gb, the HDD is the original 320gb), install the original OSX from apple recovery, and upgrade it to 10.10. What will happen to the "bios"/firmware of the mbp, if I do like this? Can I change back to the original disks, the mbp should work as before? I'm newbie in Apple stuff, I use PC for a long time, sometimes with more than one disks with different OS installations, but I don't know, how does it work in this case.

Any proper list of Mac firmware versions (Boot ROM versions) and the corresponding macOS version? This can be useful if you receive a Mac with the storage damaged and the customer wants to have the same macOS version that was installed when the storage broke. You’d start the mac with an external macOS volume and check the firmware version in System Information. The official Apple article for this only lists the firmware that originally shipped with the Mac. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201518 I found this one shows most, but doesn’t have a proper list of firmware version / corresponding macOS: https://browser.geekbench.com

Macbook Air (mid 2012) Efi Firmware Downgrade –to original

I want to bring back my beloved Macbook Air 2012 (MBA5,2) to its 'original firmware'. I have identified the file as MBA51_00EF_B01.scap, which I extracted using unpkg over the downloadable offered by Apple here: MacBook Air EFI Firmware Update 2.5 . That version allows one to install OSX 10.7.4, which is the (oldest) OS that shipped with this machine. That will allow me to reactive an old M-Audio sound interface that only works with Lion OSX. But also to experience and use this hardware performing the lightest, for I mainly use it as a working station with vintage software. Presently I have Mountain Lion (10.8.4) installed, but once I had El Capitan which upgraded me to BootROM MBA51.00EF.B04 and SMC 2.5f9. I managed to downgrade the SMC firmware to version 2.5f7, which is compatible with 10.7.4–I used rEFIt and SmcFlasher.efi for it. But Bootrom remains MBA51.00EF.B04. I followed this guide and ran the following command in the Terminal: /usr/sbin/bless -mount / -firmware "MBA51_00EF_B01.scap" --recovery --verbose Firmware preloads successfully. But when I reboot to start the installation a black screen remains during three continuous fast reboots (I guess trying to install the new firmware). Then it boots normally and no firmware downgrade happened. Any idea why this is happening? Are there any other methods to load the BootROM, supposing that it is just being refused by "bless" for being older that the installed one? Hope this contributes and appeals to those willing to revive the past. ----- UPDATE 30/07/19 ----- Still trying to downgrade firmware in MBA mid2012. Normal method via 'bless' command and extracted .scap didn't work. I just get a longer black screen and no firmware update, like to someone here and here (with the same model). I presume apple introduced the iOS policy of no-return in newer firmwares? An alternative way would be to inject the older firmware with 'flashrom' over linux , but I don't have another MBA with original firmware from where to extract it. Someone uploaded a similar dump here . But it is for MBA2012 11" i7, mine is MBA2012 13" i5. I guess the firmware is the same, but double risk to brick it.

How to bless boot partition for Ubuntu 22.04 on an Intel (2009) MacBookPro

I asked this on the Ubuntu exchange where I personally think it belongs, but they directed me here so please don't close this and tell me to ask there. I'm booting from the Mac OS X Lion installation disk that comes with the laptop and then opening a terminal from inside that. So after trying out different variations, here are the results: bless --device /dev/disk0s1 --setBoot doesn't appear to do anything. Still long timeout on white screen. System still booting afterwards. bless --device /dev/disk0s2 --setBoot same as above. bless --device /dev/disk0s1 --setBoot --legacy still long timeout on white screen. After that system goes to black screen and won't boot into Ubuntu. There are only /dev/disk0s1 and /dev/disk0s2 listed in fdisk for /dev/disk0. I'm assuming /dev/disk0s1 is /boot/efi but I have no idea. I have performed a full-disk install of Ubuntu 22.04 on an old MacBook Pro (MBP 5.2 from 2009, Core 2 Duo) machine completely wiping OSX in the process. I'm now facing the known issue of the 30-second white screen delay on boot. I already figured out I have to use the bless utility to set Ubuntu as the boot partition. My question is what command-line arguments do I have to pass exactly? All examples on the internet make use of the --legacy option and talk about BIOS mode but from what I could figure out my Ubuntu installation is using EFI (the /sys/firmware/efi directory exists ). I assume then that I shouldn't use the --legacy option when blessing the partition. Here's the output of df -h when run in Ubuntu: t30@macbook:~$ df -h tmpfs 770M 1,7M 768M 1% /run /dev/sda2 457G 12G 423G 3% / tmpfs 3,8G 0 3,8G 0% /dev/shm tmpfs 5,0M 4,0K 5,0M 1% /run/lock /dev/sda1 511M 6,1M 505M 2% /boot/efi tmpfs 770M 52K 770M 1% /run/user/1000 I think I should invoke bless like this (replacing /dev/sda1 with whatever it's mounted as under bless). bless --device /dev/sda1 --setBoot Is there a guide or can someone confirm which partition do I have to bless?
