I'm trying to connect my Mac Pro tower (2020) to my network using ethernet but am experiencing problems if use my Netgear GS105 switch, this setup results in the MacPro saying "Cable connected but self-assigned IP". I've renewed DHCP leases, changed all sorts of settings including on my router but nothing works, I have also validated that this setup does work fine with every other computer (including a MacPro Trashcan) and if I connect the MacPro Cheese-grater directly to the router it works so to recap:
This does *not* work:

I've also tried different cables in place of both and and it doesn't improve the situation, every possible combo works except if I have the MacPro 2020 Tower plugged in via the Netgear switch. Is there some issue with unmanaged switches and MacPro 2020 Towers?

I have a MacBook Pro Retina 2012 running Mojave. I was using USB ethernet on my Mac and sharing that as a WiFi to my android phone. All was stable.
Last week I had a partition error while I was resizing the disk and OS had crashed. I had to reinstall Mojave.
Now I’m trying to use the same setup. MacBook is getting internet from USB ethernet fine. I then shared the ethernet into my WiFi like last time for my Android. The Android connects to the WiFi but this time keeps saying no Internet. Mac can connect to WiFi, but cannot share internet through it. (I would guess the NAT server is not working or something like it)
I don't know how to diagnose the problem and fix it.
Please suggest.

To let a Mac automatically use Wifi and Ethernet to double the connection speed?

I am staying at a hotel, and for some reason, I think they limit each Wifi connection to 95 kbyte / s. So that is roughly 1.2 Mbps... and since I have 18 Mbps at home, I am using a speed that is less than 1/10 of the speed at home.
So I asked at the front desk to see if they have a room with a wired connection, and the answer is yes, and I switched to this room, and even bought a Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter for the Macbook Air to be able to use the Ethernet wired connection.
But to my surprise, the speed of that connection is just the same: 95 kbyte / s. Is there an easy way to tell OS X to automatically use both connections so that the speed can be doubled?
For example, if one tab in Chrome uses one connection and the downloading file in Chrome uses another connection. Or if Chrome uses one connection and Firefox uses another one, that might work too. Or can the OS be smart and just "merge" the 2 connections transparently?
(or if the OS "randomly" uses one or the other connection each time a connection is made, then the effect is roughly achieved too).

- I confirmed I have Internet with the ethernet in the USB hub in macOS.
- I verified that this is en8 interface with the USB 10/100/1000 name
- I enabled Internet sharing over the same interface over WiFi to turn macOS into an AP
- I configured the WiFi SSID to broadcast under a custom name with a custom WPA2/3 password
- My WiFi Internet icon on the top right says I'm sharing over channel 11
The issue is:
- My phone can see a new broadcasted SSID but its the hostname of my laptop instead of my custom SSID name
- When I connect my phone to macOS AP WiFi, there is no Internet
- Network settings in macOS show that the WiFi is 'Not Connected'
- No error messages are shown
- I checked logs in /var/logs and no luck
This seems like a configuration issue. How can I debug this?
I looked at related questions and couldn't find a way forward.

Why does transfer speed drop when I send and receive at the same time?

But I'm running some tests between two modern Mac computers and I'm seeing results that make me think there's something crucial I'm missing in my understanding.
The test rig is two Mac Studio M2 Ultra boxes, one with Ventura v13.7.4 and one with Sonoma 14.7.4
In order to reduce complexity, I've connected them directly to each other with a short CAT6 copper ethernet cable between their built-in NICs. When I let it auto-negotiate the speed it says 10GbaseT as expected, and for part of the test I set it to manual and 1000baseT
System Preferences > Network > Ethernet > Hardware (and ifconfig) say Full Duplex in both modes
- At 10GbaseT, using a finder copy on Mac A, copying from the local drive on mac A to the local drive on mac B, I get ~1200 MegaBytes/sec as expected (transmit-only)
- At 10GbaseT, using a finder copy on Mac A, copying from the local drive on mac B to the local drive on mac A, I get ~1200 MegaBytes/sec as expected (receive-only)
- At 10GbaseT, using a finder copy on Mac A, copying from the local drive on mac B to another share of the local drive on mac B, I get **~650 MegaBytes/sec** (simultaneous transmit/receive, **a little over half speed**)
[I get similar results running two copies at once, one transmitting and one receiving]
- At 1000baseT, using a finder copy on Mac A, copying from the local drive on mac A to the local drive on mac B, I get ~120 MegaBytes/sec as expected (transmit-only)
- At 1000baseT, using a finder copy on Mac A, copying from the local drive on mac B to the local drive on mac A, I get ~120 MegaBytes/sec as expected (receive-only)
- At 1000baseT, using a finder copy on Mac A, copying from the local drive on mac B to another share of the local drive on mac B, I get **~65 MegaBytes/sec** (simultaneous transmit/receive, again **a little over half speed**)
[Again, similar results running two copies at once, one transmitting and one receiving]
What gives? It's not just Finder, because terminal commands to copy do the same thing. It's not crappy third party hardware, I'm using the built-in ethernet. Even if there was some hardware limitation in the NIC, or a problem with storage speed, wouldn't it at least be able to get full 1GbE speed simultaneously sending/receiving in 1GbE mode?
The reason we went testing is because we're seeing similar performance using switches and connecting to an actual fileserver, the test rig was just to eliminate variables. Auto-negotiating to a single 1GbE switch in between the two test boxes didn't fix it, and I tried NFS which didn't seem to make much difference. Jumbo Frames (MTU 9000) helped somewhat, it got up to about 85 MB/sec, but it didn't go all the way to the same speed as one-way copies, and we can't use Jumbo Frames in production unfortunately anyways.

When I move between different ethernet networks (e.g., at work using ethernet on an external display, at home using thunderbolt ethernet), the ethernet does not always connect. However, I don't get immediate feedback. Instead, I connect to wi-fi. However, wi-fi is both slower and less reliable than ethernet. Thus, I'd like to know whether I am connected to ethernet or not. Of course I can go into preferences and network settings to see whether I'm connected to ethernet, but it would be better if there was some form of indicator in the status bar, just as there is for wi-fi.
Thus, my question:
**Is there a way of getting an indicator of ethernet connectivity in the OSX menu-bar?**
Perhaps there is a free application that can do this.

On a shell I would do

which would give me a mapping of Hardware Port to Device. From that I would grep the device for Hardware Port: Ethernet and then use ifaddr struct to get my IP.
I know the ifaddr part, please suggest how to do the first part programmatically.
Also, is there an alternative approach ?

I'm trying to connect to a microcomputer from my Mac over WiFi via SSH but am also connected to Ethernet. If I go to “System Preferences > Network,” I can see that I'm connected to both the Ethernet and WiFi networks simultaneously. I want the Ethernet network to be of higher priority (higher on the list) so that most programs use that connection (e.g., when I open a web browser, it connects via the Ethernet network). However, I want to be able to open the terminal and SSH to the microcomputer over the WiFi network that I'm also connected to.
I know that both connections can be used simultaneously because I can make it work with this order of operations:
1. Disconnect from the Ethernet network by physically removing the Ethernet jack from the Mac (now WiFi to the other microcomputer is the only connection in “System Preferences > Network”).
2. SSH from the Mac to the address of the microcomputer
3. Reconnect to Ethernet by plugging the Ethernet cable back into the Mac. Now I can see communicate with the microcomputer over the SSH connection I established in step 2 but can also use the Ethernet network for all other programs.
I don't like this process because I frequently need to disconnect and reconnect to the SSH connection. I'd prefer to be able to keep my Ethernet cable connected to my Mac but still be able to SSH over the WiFi network.
The ideal solution is that there flag I can pass to the SSH command to specify that I want to use the WiFi connection to perform the SSH rather than the Ethernet connection. What is the easiest way to do this from the terminal?

. (busybox on the device does not include the udhcp client.)
But when traveling I need to connect the device directly to my Mac with an Ethernet cable, through an Anker USB 3 to Ethernet adapter. I enabled Internet Sharing on my Mac.
Inside System Information under Network the Ethernet adapter shows as "AX88179A". It shows "IPv4 Addresses: 169.254.2.40".

My questions are:
How to I assign an IP number to the device that the Mac will be able to find a route to?
How do I determine the gateway IP number to use on the device?
Will the Mac (properly configured) route packets to my embedded device? (eg. Can I successfully ping a host outside the subnet from the device?)
How do I determine the IP number for the device that I can use on hosts outside this subnet? Perhaps, that's not possible, since only the Mac--which is acting as a router--is visible.
So can I configure the Mac to forward packets for specified ports to my device? (This would allow connect GDB running on a computer that is not on the subnet to GDB Server running on the device with an specific port. I would specify the Mac's IP number in GDB.)
**Update:** Seamus 's comment suggests I assign one IP number to my Mac and one to the device, both on the same subnet. I guess as long as both start with 169.254. they will be on the same subnet, since the subnet mask is 255.255.0.0.
But what does the IP number 169.254.128.214
in the results of ifconfig en8
indicate? Is that already assigned to my Mac? Or do I need to choose a different one for my Mac? And what IP number do I use for the gateway that I specify on the embedded device?

I have an interesting problem and I believe I may be halfway to understanding it but don’t know how to fix it. My home network has two routers. One is the main one and is in a cabinet so I do not have wifi enabled as the cabinet limits the range of the wifi. I have a second router placed elsewhere which runs my wifi. Currently Ethernet shows connected but no access To the internet. My guess is there is an issue with the iP address as the internet works on wifi with the Ethernet cable disconnected and slowly with it connected. With wifi off the Ethernet still doesn’t connect to internet even though shows green. I guess there is a conflict and would appreciate some advice. Thanks in advance

I have a 2020 MacBook with Intel CPU and macOS Ventura (currently). I've recently bought a unitek D1026B hub. I plug the ethernet from xiaomi 4a router WAN port to the hub, and the hub to my laptop.
When I use my work laptop with windows it works fine.
When I switch to using macOS, the internet shuts down (especially when I start some games like League of Legends). In the options it indicates that the connection is fine (green dot) but I can't connect to any website.
This issue has been occurringfor 2 weeks now and I haven't found anything that would help.
Things I've tried:
- change ethernet cable (2 different ones and works fine with windows)
- downloading special drivers for hub
- rebooting Mac or router (several times)
-remove and add back the ethernet device in network settings
-using sudo ifconfig en4 down/up (to restart network device I guess)
-changing location in network settings
-connecting directly from socket in walls (I live in dorm) and skipping router
-downgrading from macOS Sonoma to Ventura
-booting in safe mode (still lost connection)
-renew DHCP lease (it won't even get correct ip address)
From all of this I think it is some MacOS issue but I don't want to downgrade it even more and don't know how to solve it.
Also I can't change Hardware settings in network settings I can only switch from automatic to manual but when I switch for example speed it won't save.
After I downgraded to Ventura it was okay for about 2 days but after that time it started "crashing" again. My dorm officials require to use DHCP so I can't use static IP or DNS. Does anyone have any idea how to track the issue and how to solve it?

Connected to a LAN with Wifi using DHCP. I have also a dock with 10G ethernet card connected to 10G switch on the same LAN using DHCP. There are also some other computers connected with 10G to the same switch.
Ethernet adapter is before WiFi in network service order in System Preferences. Everything works fine when I connecting to other computers from it.
Problem:
When MBP m3 is connected to WiFi and to ethernet at the same time, it registers its name with DHCP on the router for both addresses.
% host mbp-m3
mbp-m3 has address 192.168.1.196
mbp-m3 has address 192.168.1.113
.196 is wifi address and .113 is the ethernet. When I am connecting from other computers to this mbp-m3 (say, with ssh or any other app), their resolver choose either one address or another in a non-predictable way. So sometimes it chooses slower WiFi address instead of 10G. But I'd like it always choose ethernet address when MPB is connected to ethernet. And choose WiFi address otherwise.
What would be the best way to do this?

The easiest and simplest thing to do is just turn off WiFi just as @SteveChambers suggested. Unfortunately, it will also disable airdrop, unlocking with watch, etc.
The best solution may be to temporarily change DHCP hostname on wifi interface. Or change mDNS hostname on wifi interface. I could use mbp-m3.local also. But I don't see a way to do this.

2019 Mac Pro 10GB Ethernet limited to 1.10GBytes Transfer, 944MBits/sec bandwidth

I have a 2019 Mac Pro (Sonoma 14.2.1) that is plugged into a 10GB ethernet switch. The other end is also plugged into a 10GB switch. No matter which direction, iPerf3 is reporting that I'm only getting 1.10Gbits Transfer and 943Mbits/sec bandwidth. I have confirmed the switches are working as iPerf reports ~7Gbits/sec between two other servers.
I have disabled all ethernet and wifi connections except the one I'm testing.
I have ensured Jumbo Frames were enabled on the local switch (I also tried another local switch that is 10GB only).
I have ensured Jumbo (9000) is selected on the interface MTU.
I have tried both AVB/EAV mode enabled and disabled.
I have ensured all cables are Cat6+
The speed is recognized as 10GB when set to auto (but when set to auto, MTU stays at 1500, so the rest of the testing has been done with interface set to Manual, 10Gbase-T, full-duplex, Jumbo(9000) MTU).
No proxies or QOS or VLAN's or anything fancy. Limit IP address tracking is disabled.
Same speed whether running iperf client or server on Mac. The other end I'm testing on are a couple of CentOS boxes. The 2 centos boxes are seeing 10GB speeds between themselves and are passing through the other 10GB switch.
Any ideas what could be causing this issue? I had gotten 10GB speeds in the past but moved stuff around and just reconnected the 10GB stuff this morning.
I have used a Cisco CBS250-48T-4x which had Jumbo Frames enabled on the 10GB SPF+ ports and saw the connection as 10GB. I'm also testing with a Ubiquiti USW-Aggregation which is 10GB-only. The other end is a Meraki MS425-16 which is 10GB/40GB (plugged into at 10G port) which is auto-negotiation the port at 10GB.

I am using an M1 MacBook Air on the latest OS Update and a Windows 11 desktop PC and I would like to move files between them in the realm of a couple of GiB (1-100, so transfer speeds do matter).
They are connected in the same Network via either ethernet Cat6 or Wifi 5GHz (for testing and stability I used ethernet, but in theory 5GHz Wifi would be plenty). The network includes a router and the Windows machines are connected via one dumb ethernet switch (i.e. non-configurable), all 1000Base-T, machines verified to be connected and recognise that.
The issue: Throughput between MacOS and Windows is limited to 100Mbps.
I can't figure out where the bottleneck is and how to resolve this.
Multiple restarts etc. didn't yield any results, different programs and transfer protocols didn't either.
I used iperf on all machines - MacOS and Windows have a throughput of around 96Mbps and Windows to Windows the expected 980Mbps.
Any tips, something I overlooked? A setting? Maybe someone has a recommendation for a (free) software solution to easily share files between the systems?
