External display will not achieve full brightness?

My external display (HP 27f 4k ) will not achieve full brightness when connected to my M1 MacBook Pro (2020, 13", Ventura 13.2) via the official Apple USB-C HDMI adapter . - The display's brightness is cranked all the way up - "*True Tone*" is off - "*Automatically adjust brightness*" is off - "*Slightly dim display on battery*" is off - I've recalibrated the display color, gamma, and white point (in macOS) and then restored it back to the factory default (because it made no difference to the brightness) I noticed this because I sometimes need to use a Windows laptop with this display. The monitor on Windows was noticeably brighter. So, I measured the brightness with a screen calibration tool and compared the results of the same monitor in the same location (all the same external variables) with the monitor plugged into my MacBook and then into a Windows laptop. I measured against a fullscreen browser window displaying a page with nothing but #FFFFFF (white) as the background color. Results: - 290 nits from the MacBook - 335 nits from the Windows laptop What's going on here? I suspect this is a software thing because I *think* I've seen the display snap from full brightness to this dimmed state after login. I say "think" because now that I've decided to write this post, I can't reproduce it. But my memory is that I'll log in, and seconds after the desktop is displayed, the brightness snaps to this dimmed state.

I understand the "Automatically Adjust Brightness" feature, when enabled, is designed automatically to raise or lower the brightness of e.g. the Macbook's screen depending on whether the surrounding environment is dark or well-lit. I am curious what sensor onboard the Macbook laptop is used to detect the amount of light in the room. A cursory experiment caused my Macbook's screen to dim when I covered the webcam, even though the webcan was not on, and the green light wasn't lit. Is the Macbook's webcam constantly sensing light levels? I was under the impression that the webcam was wired to prevent the webcam from capturing without illuminating the green LED. If there is some other sensor positioned close to the webcam just for sensing light levels, what is it?

Apple seems to have completely removed the automatic brightness switch in recent iOS versions - the only 'automatic' settings now are for light/dark mode & Night Shift. I don't mind Night Shift changing my screen's white point as night comes on, but in regular daylight I heartily object to it constantly deciding for me how bright the backlight should be. I'm reading my book, it feels a bit dim for the ambient light I'm in, so I quickly dial the brightness up a bit…. then as I'm reading I can see the system just overruling me & turning it back down again. So I turn it up… the system turns it down. Rinse & repeat ad nauseum. I really do feel it's something I ought to be in charge of. Does anyone know the magic dance necessary to stop it doing this? enter image description here Picture of settings just in case I missed something really *really* obvious.

I use the automatic display brightness function in the System Preferences and I have noticed that it is doing totally wrong. When I turn the feature off and set the brightness to let‘s say maximum and turn the feature on again, the maximum will be used as the standard lighting. So when I set the maximum in a dark room, it will stay this bright. I tired it with 90 % brightness. When I open my windows to let light into the room, it goes up to 100 % and by closing the windows to a totally dark room it‘s going back to the 90 %. And sometimes when I set it to like 10 %, the iMac doesn‘t even react to my flash light. After a little time of tweaking around it works again. I have restarted the iMac a couple of times, but it didn‘t help at all. How can I fix that stupid behavior? My iPhone does fine. It uses the real ambient lighting. What i did is to cover the sensor, set the brightness to as low as possible and activate automation. Putting the hand away set it to an optimal level. Is this how it‘s done? – iMac Late 2015 27" (Mojave up-to-date, freshly installed a week ago) – iPhone 8 Plus (iOS up-to-date)

- I have unchecked Auto-Brightness under Settings app → General → Accessibility → Display Accommodations. - I have also disabled Night Shift under Settings app → Display & Brightness. - I have Low Power Mode turned off under Settings app → Battery. However, every time I use the iPhone for either more than 5 minutes or use any apps, the brightness automatically dims down. It’s frustrating since I play games and use apps all the time. The brightness keeps fluctuating. As I understand, there are no hardware faults. I believe this is purely a software bug. I would really like some help. I am using an iPhone 7 running iOS 12.3.1.

I've noticed that in Sierra (or so it seems), the OS's icon for the brightness HUD changed some—longer and thinner rays, thinner inner circle, etc. I would like to change the file that OSDisplay uses so that it matches the default icon. Apparently in the past these images were stored as PDF files in /System/Library/LoginPlugins/BezelServices.loginPlugin/Contents/Resources/BelzelUI/HiDPI, but I do not see them there any more. The Contents/Resources/ folder just contains a bunch of .lproj folders.

In my experience with macOS, there tend to be advanced or hidden settings preserved for features that Apple has removed from the UI. Is this the case with Auto-Brightness? Is there some way to get the auto dimming behavior back on my iPhone X?
