I often leave my phone plugged into my MacBook over night. After switching to an iPhone with USB-C, it started charging up my Mac from the phone battery if the Mac isn't connected to power, which results in my phone being dead in the morning. I'm unsure whether the Mac's battery is already flat when this happens, or if it happens when the Mac is still sleeping. The battery settings on the iPhone show power being used by "USB-C Accessories".
Is there any way to disable this reverse charging behaviour?

M1 Mac mini (M1, 2020), with 2 Lenovo L22e-20 monitors.
I left the Mac unattended for 10 minutes, when I came back, 1 monitor is still on but the other has gone to sleep.
The one that stays on is connected via Thunderbolt, the one that goes to sleep is connected via HDMI.
I can't wake the HDMI monitor up by turning the monitor off and on.
The only solution that has ever worked is rebooting the Mac.
If I check Energy Saver preferences,
turn display off
is set to 1 hour.
How can I fix this issue?

How can I tell whether a drive is asleep?

Is there an application or command-line utility for Mac OS X to query a hard-disk to see if it is 'asleep' or 'awake' *right now*? (i.e. as controlled by Energy Saver /
pmset
disk sleeping preferences). Note that I'm after the *current* sleep state, not just whether the system will put the disk to sleep when its idle.
I have two hard drives in my MacBook Pro, an SSD for the System and a much larger "regular" mechanical drive for various large files I don't often use.
I'd like the physical drive to be put to sleep when not in use, and in general stay asleep unless I'm actually using it. I'd like this to be automatic, rather than mounting and unmounting the drive on a regular basis.
I've set up Energy Saver to put the disk to sleep, but I can't actually tell when the drive is asleep or awake (even pressing my ear against the laptop its hard to tell what's fan noise vs disk noise), so I don't know if I've appropriately divided my files between the two drives.
Is there some way of querying the drive to see if it's asleep, without actually waking it, so I can monitor this to see if its *generally* asleep or not?
I guess an alternate, equivalent question is, *What is the Mac OS X equivalent of the Linux command:*
hdparm -C
**Note:** It need not be an exact, command-line equivalent. Any means of finding out would be useful.
----
Some places I've looked so far, without success:
* The built-in *Disk Utility* and *System Information* applications don't seem to provide any information on sleep/wake state of drives.
* pmset -g
(built-in command ) offers various query functions, but the events seem to be about the *system* sleep events, not disks.
* smartctl -i -n sleep
(smartmontools via MacPorts ) seems to *always* think all drives are asleep for me! (would be interesting to hear if this is true for others)

The first time mac detects the new device. Worked great.
When I disconnected and reconnected the keyboard it only detects keys from A-Z. Not even spacebar or num keys. Tried going to keyboard settings >> Change Keyboard Type. It does not detect my keyboard. It only starts to work again when I restarted my mac. Now every time if my keyboard unplugged accidentally, I have to restart my mac. Is there any other way to do it without restarting macbook again and again everytime?

Is my external USB drive causing erratic sleep/hibernate behaviour?

I've been reading up around sleep settings as I keep finding my Late 2012 Mac Mini in a weird hung state each morning that requires a force-reboot (it's like running Windows 10 years ago!)
I thought the "deep sleep" function was to blame but when I ran
pmset-g
I got this:
System-wide power settings:
Currently in use:
standby 0
Sleep On Power Button 1
womp 1
autorestart 0
hibernatefile /var/vm/sleepimage
powernap 0
networkoversleep 0
disksleep 10
sleep 60
autopoweroffdelay 14400
hibernatemode 0
autopoweroff 1
ttyskeepawake 1
displaysleep 10
standbydelay 4200
However https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/113954/difference-between-autopoweroff-and-standby-in-pmset says:
> With the release of the OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.2 supplemental update
> 2.0, a new feature was introduced to enter safe sleep after four hours of the computer being connected to AC power. This is an effort to
> comply with the European Energy Standards (ErP Lot6). **This will only
> occur if there is no wireless or Ethernet activity and no activity
> from external devices such as USB storage devices**.
I have an external USB hard-drive as the 2nd drive on my SSD MacMini as my main data drive. If this is turned off, I recently noticed the system won't boot (folder with a question mark) which seems odd for an ancillary drive. Either way, would the presence of this drive prevent deep-sleep/hibernate/standby?
- It will sleep a couple of hours fine, it's only overnight it has issues
- It generally still has lights on my connected USB mini-hub when it is frozen
- It typically "semi-wakes"; the screen recognises an active input and typically I get a black screen with a responsive mouse cursor
I started writing a totally different question but then was thinking whether my USB drive might be a culprit here or I should be looking elsewhere?
How can I tell if the Mac is is sleeping Vs standby Vs hibernate Vs deep-sleep to track down which transition or action is causing the problem?

I have a strange issue with my Macbook.
- Macbook Pro (13" late 2011)
- Memory 4GB
- Processor Intel 2.4GHZ
- Graphics Intel HD
- Mac OS Sierra 10.12.6
- Two original Power Adapters 60W
A week ago my battery failed and the Macbook became very slow all the time under any condition. This makes all sense to me. After replacing the battery the condition changed (improved a lot). Anyhow, I decided also to do a clean reinstall of Sierra after so many years, which went without any problems. The following problem description is the same for the time before and after the re-install of Sierra.
Here is what happens:
- When charged a 100% while using the power adapter the mac gets very, very slow. The activity monitor is showing kernel CPU usage of up to 500%, the system is running at ~93%, user load is normal with ~8%. The activity monitor is not showing any processes with excessive energy consumption. Memory consumption is normal too. The Mac works well until the battery is fully charged.
- As soon as I disconnect the power adapter and the Mac is only running on battery the kernel goes down, system and user CPU load is running below 10% and all is back to normal. As soon as the battery charge goes down to ~95% or less, all is good again also with the re-connected power adapter.
- The problem repeats itself any time when the battery gets fully charged.
- No difference with different power adapters.
- The charging process and time seems to be absolutely normal.
- No difference with or without third party hardware connected.
- SMC / PRAM reset does not make a difference.
- Virus and malware check negative.
- Mac HD drive checks all good, no problems, no repair was required.
- Only when running in Safe mode, the Mac works well under any power supply and charge condition.
- Temperatures for battery, CPU and GPU as well as related fan speeds are all normal under any condition, also when the problem occurs.
- Over night I am leaving the Mac in sleep. It seems that the Mac shuts down at times automatically, but than also reboots on its own since there is a message in the morning that the external drive was not ejected correctly.
My best guess is an internal energy supply issue, but I have no idea how to continue from here. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone in advance.
**UPDATE**
- Ran the Battery completely empty.
- Recharged after that fully.
- Performed SMS / PRAM reset before restart.
- Strangely the battery Health (coconut) went from 100% to 101,2%
- The maximum capacity went from 5900mAh (which is also the design capacity) to 5971mAh.
- Problem remains the same and occurs only with full battery and charger attached.

I’m working on an A2179 2020 MBA. My old friend spilled something in the topcase and right-side keys weren’t working. Everything else was working fine when I took possession.
I did the repair once with a case/battery combination unit. When I powered on, the fan went full speed and the CPU was throttled to a near halt. It booted and worked, but barely. Also, the battery wouldn’t receive charge.
I read elsewhere that behavior can result if there is a thermal sensor somewhere not properly sending information, or if the battery is completely dead. I reseated all of the cables to no avail, so I returned the component figuring there was an error with the battery or its daughterboard.
I ordered a better grade battery (from here!) and case. I repeated the repair and I’m getting the same result. I’ve gone through and reseated the cables. Same thing.
So I’m stumped. Here are the basic conditions:
1. Previous to disassembly, the CPU worked fine. The only issue was problematic keying. Work arounds included external keyboard.
2. Two repairs with different components have both resulted in the computer protecting itself.
3. I’m reasonably certain the second battery and its controller are good quality.
4. I've come to learn this is a not uncommon issue with MBA topcase and screen repairs, and I even read a conversation about it with an iMac.
Reseating cables hasn’t fixed it. Having said that, I am wondering about some of the cabling around the trackpad. I’m also wondering about the tiny daughterboard just north of the trackpad on the A2179. I do wonder if something is goofy with the power/fingerprint button. I may order a new one of those, but that shouldn’t be sufficient for the unit to go into temperature protection.
Any thoughts or advice is super appreciated. Cheers!

How do I remove `System-wide power settings:` from pmset -g output?

I ran the following sequence of commands as root:
Check output of
pmset -g
:
pmset -g
System-wide power settings:
Currently in use:
standby 1
Sleep On Power Button 1
hibernatefile /var/vm/sleepimage
powernap 1
networkoversleep 0
disksleep 10
sleep 0 (sleep prevented by Python, powerd)
hibernatemode 3
ttyskeepawake 1
displaysleep 0
tcpkeepalive 1
powermode 2
womp 1
Disable sleep using pmset disablesleep 1
and then run pmset -g
again:
pmset disablesleep 1
pmset -g
System-wide power settings:
SleepDisabled 1
Currently in use:
standby 1
Sleep On Power Button 1
hibernatefile /var/vm/sleepimage
powernap 1
networkoversleep 0
disksleep 10
sleep 1 (sleep prevented by powerd)
hibernatemode 3
ttyskeepawake 1
displaysleep 3
tcpkeepalive 1
powermode 2
womp 0
Observe the extra line SleepDisabled 1
that appears in the output above.
I then tried to remove the line by running pmset disablesleep 0
:
pmset disablesleep 0
System-wide power settings:
SleepDisabled 0
Currently in use:
standby 1
Sleep On Power Button 1
hibernatefile /var/vm/sleepimage
powernap 1
networkoversleep 0
disksleep 10
sleep 1 (sleep prevented by powerd)
hibernatemode 3
ttyskeepawake 1
displaysleep 3
tcpkeepalive 1
powermode 2
womp 0
Now I have a line that says SleepDisabled 0
.
**What command can I run to get back to a state where the line does not appear at all in the output of pmset -g
?**
Also, is SleepDisabled 0
equivalent in the state where the line does not appear at all?
---
**Update**: pmset restoredefaults
does something but it does not remove the scars left by using disablesleep
.
$ pmset -g
System-wide power settings:
SleepDisabled 0
Currently in use:
standby 1
Sleep On Power Button 1
hibernatefile /var/vm/sleepimage
powernap 1
networkoversleep 0
disksleep 10
sleep 0 (sleep prevented by powerd)
hibernatemode 3
ttyskeepawake 1
displaysleep 0
tcpkeepalive 1
powermode 2
womp 1
$ pmset restoredefaults
Restored Default settings.
$ pmset -g
System-wide power settings:
SleepDisabled 0
Currently in use:
standby 1
Sleep On Power Button 1
hibernatefile /var/vm/sleepimage
powernap 1
networkoversleep 0
disksleep 10
sleep 1 (sleep prevented by powerd)
hibernatemode 3
ttyskeepawake 1
displaysleep 10
tcpkeepalive 1
powermode 0

I’m using an iPhone 15 Pro Max with iOS 18.1.
For the past two or three days, it’s been losing battery way faster than normal.
Also (and I don’t know if this is connected), my screen time tracker seems to think the phone is always in use.
Also, the app that’s been most used for the past couple weeks is Settings.
I assure you I haven’t used the phone anywhere near that much.
Before this, my battery life was much more normal. Also, as I write this question (which has taken around 2 minutes), I have lost 6%, which is much worse than normal).
The phone’s been at what seems to be normal temperature. It hasn’t been slow at all. I close all tabs in my browser, and close the tabs of all apps. Nothing is using my location or Bluetooth.

At 2:14 every morning, my Mac wakes. Looking at the logs, I see it's a scheduled event, but nothing shows up in System Preferences > Power. When I go to terminal, and run pmset -g sched, I see
Scheduled power events:
wake at 03/31/13 02:14:00
Only one, for the next event. I can delete it through pmset, and it won't wake that night (morning). The next day, there's a new event. So for instance, after that one went, now I see
Scheduled power events:
wake at 04/01/13 02:14:00
I've locked the Power Management preferences, I've even set the com.apple.AutoWake.plist file to remove all write access through chmod, and the next day... a new entry appears.
Taking Lauri's suggestion, I ran opensnoop on the Autowake.plist, and at 2:15, this happened, inserting that power event:
2013 Apr 4 02:15:00 0 20 powerd 4 /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
2013 Apr 4 02:15:00 0 20 powerd 5 /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
2013 Apr 4 02:15:00 89 15241 mdworker 4 /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
I didn't see anything in /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or /Library/LaunchAgents/ that seemed relevant. Execsnoop returned
2013 Apr 4 02:15:00 89 15241 14058 mdworker
2013 Apr 5 02:15:00 89 24165 19851 mdworker
What the heck is going on, and how do I stop this from happening? Or what's the next step to troubleshoot this? Thanks.
Vitals: it's a Mac Mini, 10.8.3, but it's done this for ages (including when migrated from a previous Mac Mini via Time Machine).
