**The problem**
When I use my laptop, it always heats up a lot in the center above the touch bar on top.
I can feel it quite heated below as well under the top center.
The CPU is fine (no processes going crazy).
Fans are not really loud at all and I suspect they are working below the speed they should be. This was an issue when I bought it as well.
**SMC reset**
I did (multiple) SMC resets when I first bought, as this was an issue straight away. After the reset it worked fine for a few weeks and then I'd do another reset. A year and a half later thouhg, when I do an SMC reset, I don't notice the heat going away and it's still working the same way.
P.S. Since I have been working from home, I often connect to an external monitor, no-surprise there that this causes heat. When I don't work with one, it's still warmer that it should be in my opinion.
Any idea what may be the causing the issue and how can I fix it?
My Macbook has the following specs:
MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2018)
Processor 2.6 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7
Memory 32 GB 2400 MHz DDR4
Graphics Radeon Pro Vega 20 4 GB
Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB

# Brief Summary
2019 MBP 16" 2.3Ghz i9 shows severe thermal throttling
* CPU Frequency hovers around 1.9-2.0 Ghz
* Power draw doesn't exceed 30W
* Max Temperature only 76ish degrees Celcius
* Exporting a 5min clip on Adobe Premiere Pro which slams all 8 cores
I've attached screenshots below showing just how much the new MBP 16" i9 throttles. I haven't really had a problem with it until recently... but there are 2 variables:
## What's Changed?
* Catalina upgrade to 10.15.5 recently
* Applecare service replaced the logic board
## Questions
* Is it likely that the replacement logic board is not up to snuff?
* I haven't heard any complaints online (reddit, stack exchange, apple support) of thermal throttling lately. How does one test abnormal throttling?
## Screenshots
* terminal output after running
-g thermlog
* intel power gadget showing the aforementioned stats holding steady despite high CPU Utilization.

Aside from creating/editing scenes with explicit temperatures on a Mac running 10.14, does anyone have a suggestion for a solution?

I saw people recommend using a fan control app (used to do it from the BIOS in Windows), but I'm not sure how it works in a Mac, so kind of scared to ruin something.
For example, I don't see in the Mac's Fan Control app an option to define a curve, just a single temperature. Also, how does it affect the fans?
If there is some recommended setting, I would love to hear =)

What I find absolutely unbelievable that my Mac's CPU fans were running at maximum speed after just booting up, from a switched off state, with the charger cable disconnected. I can't see any reason for that, no applications should be running at this stage.
Is it possible to debug this somehow or is this simply an indication of a possible rootkit and a complete reinstall of my Mac?

I'm toasted. My long-awaited purchase disappoints me extremely.
I'm a quietness-freak. One of the main reasons to get **Macbook Pro 15" 2.8, R9 M370X** was Apple's tendency to keep hardware hot but quiet, and it's speakers.
Despite that the fans on it are mad. While you're using CPU only it's about "ok", but I had to undervolt and limit the TDP to ~35W to make the noise about reasonable. Speeds are down. **Temps - 50-60C on idle, up to 80-85 on load**.
When R9 M370X is involved performing even lightest things it goes insane though. GPU may simply be active but doing nothing, I play YT video and **fans ramp up to 50% while CPU is no more than 70C and GPU ~65C**.
So, **1-st problem - fans start to be much more aggressive when dGPU is on**.
When I do something (even lightest) in Cinema 4D it may be **~65C CPU and ~60 GPU it goes full blast**. Than at least a minute after I stopped working it goes on before calming down. Even when it's 55C already it still goes.
**So, second - fan speeds are much excessive and aren't adequate to temps.**
Than I tried MacsFanControl (TG Pro, doesn't matter) to lower the speeds. Despite I managed to get ~70-80C on load a minute later CPU went 800ghz flat! And nothing makes it speed up, I have to give the control back to system, it spins 6000rpm for a couple of minutes and than recovers. In Windows it's the same.
**So, third problem - inadequate and unavoidable artificial throttling.**
I'm getting mad. I can't bare this noise. Even lightest photo editing in C1 makes it shout out loud despite it's pretty cool, not speaking of C4D which is my main tool.
Fans are clean, paste is new (MX-4)
Is this a normal for this model? Does 2014 GT 750M does the same? How to f*** make it work silently, or at least reasonably?
Help me please. It doesn't give the performance nor comfort I bought it for, I'm so sad...

Topcase repair reassembly issues: A2179, fans

I’m working on an A2179 2020 MBA. My old friend spilled something in the topcase and right-side keys weren’t working. Everything else was working fine when I took possession.
I did the repair once with a case/battery combination unit. When I powered on, the fan went full speed and the CPU was throttled to a near halt. It booted and worked, but barely. Also, the battery wouldn’t receive charge.
I read elsewhere that behavior can result if there is a thermal sensor somewhere not properly sending information, or if the battery is completely dead. I reseated all of the cables to no avail, so I returned the component figuring there was an error with the battery or its daughterboard.
I ordered a better grade battery (from here!) and case. I repeated the repair and I’m getting the same result. I’ve gone through and reseated the cables. Same thing.
So I’m stumped. Here are the basic conditions:
1. Previous to disassembly, the CPU worked fine. The only issue was problematic keying. Work arounds included external keyboard.
2. Two repairs with different components have both resulted in the computer protecting itself.
3. I’m reasonably certain the second battery and its controller are good quality.
4. I've come to learn this is a not uncommon issue with MBA topcase and screen repairs, and I even read a conversation about it with an iMac.
Reseating cables hasn’t fixed it. Having said that, I am wondering about some of the cabling around the trackpad. I’m also wondering about the tiny daughterboard just north of the trackpad on the A2179. I do wonder if something is goofy with the power/fingerprint button. I may order a new one of those, but that shouldn’t be sufficient for the unit to go into temperature protection.
Any thoughts or advice is super appreciated. Cheers!

Temperature (PKG) is at around 65-75 degrees celsius while basically only using the browser. CPU utilization is hovering at 15% which is nothing. Is this normal? I doubt it... in other case if I'd hit 90%+ utilization the computer would probably fly away... The fans don't seem to be too dirty too. The air seems to be blowing fine so no idea what's going on but it's super annoying even how hot it gets.

Is it Possible to Make Thermal Throttling More Aggressive (Throttle Sooner)?

I have a 2018 hexacore Mac Mini, and under certain types of load it gets hot enough that it's causing the SSD to get extremely hot, enough that there's a risk the system will go to sleep to protect it (not sure of the exact trigger, but it seems to be around 68ºC).
But the only real source of heat in the system is the CPU, so thermal throttling should really be preventing this from being possible, but I'm guessing the system isn't using the SSD temperature as a consideration in how much throttling occurs.
So what I'm wondering is – is there any way for me to tweak macOS' thermal throttling to make it more aggressive (throttle sooner, or set a lower maximum CPU temperature)? I'd prefer my system to run cooler rather than faster, especially if forced sleep/shutdown is the alternative.
### Notes
I'm going to try to clean out the fan and take a few other measures as well, but it strikes me as odd that the system isn't throttling harder when it's on the verge of having to go to sleep, so I'd really prefer to change it so that isn't even possible to begin with, since the CPU is basically responsible for the SSD temperature in such a tiny machine, as the SSD itself isn't heavily used.
For those interested, I'm seeing the high SSD temperatures when running video transcoding in Handbrake while also watching a video in Plex (the viewer application). Even though it should be using direct play (files are already in a suitable format, no further transcoding required) this seems to be enough to tip the temperature over the edge after a while – watching the same files in Quicktime Player does not cause this issue even with Handbrake running (SSD temperature doesn't exceed 65-66ºC at its highest).

Then I tried a dozen of other suggestions, but none of them work well with Apple Silicon.
It's a very strange decision for me to get rid of those sensors; definitely a classic Apple-way. Also iStats, TG Pro, and other GUI tools work perfectly fine, so something there definitely exists.
Also, I wanted to add temperature sensors in htop
, but I don't think it's possible.

Thanks :)

Sometimes even when temperature is 60 Celsius cpu speed limit stays at 20%. Only after a reboot it gets to 100%. Or it takes a very very long time.It might be inactivity of half a day or a day. But cannot predict when it will be reset. Is there any reason for this? Or is is it a hardware fault. I have tried clean install of OS. NVRAM SCM ..etc all the resets. But issue stays the same.
I have asked the same question here as well.

I am running a 2018 Mac Mini with a 27" Thunderbolt display as the main and a 27" Benq as a 2nd (extended) display. I'm using an Apple TB3 to TB2 adaptor for the Thunderbolt and connecting to the Benq via HDMI. MacOS v14.4.1.
Just for the past couple evenings the Thunderbolt display has been working fine all day but during sessions usually right before bed it has been going dark out of nowhere. I don't think it's actually dropping the connection because the dock, menubar and desktop icons are not moving over to the Benq like they do if I were to disconnect the cable from the back of the Mac, but it's definitely all black and the only thing that bings it back is a restart or disconnecting and reconnecting the cable from the adaptor or back of the Mac. And even after that, in most cases it has stayed on for a minute or 2 and then goes black again.
Mac Fan Control isn't indicating that any internal temps are too high, but the box HAS felt rather hot. I currently have the fan running at full speed constantly and it hasn't gone dark since I made that change (about the past 20 minutes... whereas it was going dark consistently for the 30 minutes before that). Is this a coincidence or does it make sense that the picture would go out if something (video card) got too hot? And in the case of the latter, is this an issue with my Mac's temperature sensing capabilities?

However, I sometimes want to use the MBP casually and would be willing to throttle down the CPU to decrease/eliminate the likelihood of the fans kicking in. Is there a relatively safe way to do that? I noticed that starting Siri pauses the fans, probably combined with throttling the CPU.
Does anybody know a good way to approach this?

**** SMC sensors ****
CPU Thermal level: 180
GPU Thermal level: 30
IO Thermal level: 30
Fan: 2471 rpm
CPU die temperature: 38.38 C
GPU die temperature: 41.00 C
I checked all sensors and there is not a single one reporting temperature higher than 42C. What are those thermal levels based on?
Desperately seeking for any pointers... Thanks in advance!

kernel_task slowing down on Intel-based MacBook Pro

I have a 2020 MacBook Pro 16", the last of the Intel based Macs. Just in the last couple of weeks it has been slowing down due the kernel_task process going up to 1000% CPU usage.
I have done a SMC and NVRAM reset to no avail. I have followed the advice in this thread and have nothing plugged in on the left side and also disabled Turbo Boost. The lid is closed with one external monitor and I have both left and right fans running at full RPM.
The usage does not seem limited to any one application (eg browser etc), it happens without or with various apps open. Temps are fine as per the image below? 60c.
The one thing I can say is that it generally starts occurring after about 7-8 hours of work time (regardless of when I start work). Work is just browsers, nothing taxing.
Any ideas on what I can do next? Have just about had it with my laptop slowing to a crawl every single afternoon.

To be more specific, I'd like to be able to get the same info available in the iStat widget under the Fans and Temps tabs on the command line.
I'd like to be able to find these values at the command line so it could be scripted and plugged into a monitoring setup on my Mac - I have a data-nerd desire to collect and graph these values (and other stats) on my Macbook over time.
On Linux, it seems like this would be possible by reading a pseudo-file under the
/proc
directory, but I'm not sure how to do the equivalent on OS X (if it exists).

I've noticed recently that my 2019 MBP 16' (running latest version of Big Sur) becomes very slow and sluggish after being connected to an external monitor for a certain amount of time (the time varies, sometimes it's 1 hour, 2 hours, 30 mins, etc). For some reason CPU usage goes to 80-90% across all cores when this happens, although the temperature remains steady at ~60C (so I don't think it's CPU throttling or anything like that). Opening Activity Monitor shows that
kernel_task
consumes most of that CPU, which I understand it to be part of the OS, although I don't know why it suddenly spikes. I've monitored GPU temps when this happens, and they also seem to be somewhere in the 60s C most of the time. I don't think that's hot enough for throttling, although I don't know for sure.
The issue persists whether I use an USB-C to HDMI dock, or a USB-C to DP cable. Disconnecting the external monitor for a few minutes resolves the issue, but it inevitably happens again once I reconnect it.
I've tried a few things like resetting the SMC (at least I think I have; the OS gives you no confirmation), or connected the power cable and monitor on different sides, but to no avail.
Any solutions to this problem? I'm using a Dell monitor, in case that matters.
