I was using a APFS external USB Disk on a PC using a commercial driver. Suddenly it stopped being accessible.. Now I can´t mount the Volume inside the APFS container anymore, on PC but also not on a Mac! If I try diskutils - please see the log:
123$ diskutil verifyvolume disk4s1
Started file system verification on disk4s1 DISK-XYZ
Verifying file system
Volume is already unmounted
Performing fsck_apfs -n -x /dev/rdisk4s1
Checking the container superblock
Checking the space manager
error: (oid 0x400) sm: invalid o_cksum (0x74dfcb428a5691c4)
error: verification/reading of the spaceman object failed: Illegal byte sequence
Space manager is invalid
The volume /dev/rdisk4s1 could not be verified completely
File system check exit code is 8
Restoring the original state found as unmounted
Error: -69845: File system verify or repair failed
Underlying error: 8
Any idea how to fix it? As there is important stuff on the drive I currently draw an image to be held safely while testing on the drive. Or should I try the other way round? How do you evaluate chances to fix it with fsck? Do you know of any other handy tools? Disk Warrior does not handle APFS unfortunately.. ah- btw - mounting read only does not work unfortunately.
123$ diskutil mount readOnly /dev/disk4s1
Volume on disk4s1 failed to mount; it appears to be an APFS Volume which might be locked
Try "diskutil apfs unlockVolume"
Thanks and best, DHVD

After installing Windows on an external drive, it crashes when connecting via a SATA case. (Crashes when booting Windows, Linux, and macOS). The installation was based on the answer from [Drivers not working on Windows 10 installed (CLI process) on external SSD running on MacBook Air 2018](https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/384355/drivers-not-working-on-windows-10-installed-cli-process-on-external-ssd-runnin/384447#384447) . However, the exact procedure, including additional steps taken, is documented in a secret gist on GitHub. I have tried multiple different cables and cases. I am using an Imac18,3. I have tried plugging the SATA case into the mac via USB-C to USB-C and USB-A to USB-C. All of these cables should allow data transfer. The Cable that it works with is a USB-A to SATA cable. The device crashes when plugging the drive in from boot. (Only if booting from that drive though) Does anyone know why this happens? Is there a way to fix it?

I find that I generally cannot remove files on my main (hfs) external drive via Preview. I can remove them via a Finder window, and I can remove then from Terminal, just not Preview! If they're on my main drive (the internal SSD on my Mac Mini), I can remove them via Preview without any problem. Here's the directories (and security flags) for one file in question (foo.jpg): ls -l -d / /Volumes/ss /Volumes/ss/pics /Volumes/ss/pics/misc drwxr-xr-x 20 root wheel 640 Oct 12 2022 / drwxrwxr-x+ 97 root wheel 3366 Jul 26 22:49 /Volumes/ss drwxrwxr-x 33 sieler staff 1122 Jul 27 21:17 /Volumes/ss/pics drwxrwxr-x 13 sieler staff 442 Jul 27 21:24 /Volumes/ss/pics/misc -rw-r--r-- 1 sieler staff 3035137 Jul 19 12:40 foo.jpg Attempts to remove via Previe (e.g., right-click, select 'Move to Trash'; or left click and hit command-backspace) get a popup: You do not have permission to move the file "foo.jpg" to the trash. What's wrong with Preview? (And, can I fix it?) My external drive is: macOS Extended (Journaled) I'm on Monterey (12.6.1) *** **Update**: Oddly, Preview will let me rotate them and save them back in place, which effectively removes (and recreates) them, so it *has* access! And, since I can Finder-remove, or Terminal/rm-remove, I clearly have the rights to remove the file (and to access the .Trash folder). (Yes, the vast majority of other files on the drive are Preview removable.)

The deal is my Apple MacBook Pro (2020, M1, 13 inch) with 1TB of storage is running low on space. Most of the space used is photos and videos. So I thought the simplest way to free stuff on the local hard drive would be to put it all on an external drive; I have a few 1TBs laying around. I know the first thing to do, BTW, is a good Time Machine backup. :-) But that said, I wanted to check if there is a relatively simple way to move all the photos - basically the whole photo library - onto an external drive, and when I run phtoos it can run it from there. I know I could get a bunch of iCloud storage and use that too, but I want to have a local backup, and also be able to run Photos without worrying too much about whether my connection is working. I don't mind taping it to the lid or something :-) By the way I am not a sophisticated user of Photos, I haven't used as far as I know any of the advanced file features and honestly never really got fluent with it. I'm just saving photos on the app as I download them from my phone. I am sure there is probably something simple. It's just not a feature/capability I have used yet. I thought to just drag the folder from the one with my username. But I am never sure if the file pathways and links will keep working, sometimes these things get messed up if you aren't careful. This question was almost answered here https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/193035/how-to-backup-export-photos-videos-from-the-new-photos-app-to-an-external-hard-d But the person asking wanted to know about making it Windows-readable, and I am not sure a) that the procedure would be the same, if it is, then no worries b) if it is applicable to OS Big Sur - again if it is, I will try it

I've numbered each point – as there are a lot – in the hope it makes it easier to reply or ask me for further info. Thanks! 1. The Problem 2. What I've Tried So Far... 3. Next Steps? 4. Screenshots The Problem -------------- 2. 2018 MBP Will not boot using Internet Recovery, nor any other type of Recovery thus far. 3. Get variety of errors - 1008f, 2300f, 2100f. 4. 2018 MBP is running Big Sur (*possibly* a recent beta version, icr) 5. Have updated 2011 iMac to **High Sierra 10.13.6**. It's moving slowly, but it's definitely moving. It's a 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3, plenty of free disk space - 1.76TB. 6. I have *most* important stuff on the MBP backed up, but concerned due to medical reasons that vital things may not have been backed up in recent times - my eye has been off the ball somewhat... 7. I really want to access the Data on the MBP if I *possibly* can. 8. I fear the Logic Board *might* be on it's way, but hope I can salvage something. What I've Tried Already -------------------------- 9. Updated iMac to HS, to create **bootable installer of High Sierra** using Terminal commands. It's Extended Volume, not AFPS. Can make another in AFPS if it will remotely help. 10. MBP did not boot to it. Still brings up Network prompt which ultimately seems to cause the fail each time. 11. MBP *appears* to process connecting the MBP to WiFi Network each time, but then produces variety of error codes at the end, even when using bootable installer and Option key. 12 Have even put entire High Sierra OS on external drive, endeavouring to effectively use external drive as a Mac Mini with ailing MBP just the screen. Nope. Still wants to connect to to Network (this is for the Firmware, afaik?) 13. Have today connected MBP to iMac using Thunderbolt 3 cable and USB-C to Thunderbolt adaptor. 14. Endeavouring to boot using **Target Disk Mode**. 15. Can see **MBP Macintosh HD - Data** in Disk Utility, but cannot perform **First Aid**, nor **Mount** it. **IMAGE BELOW** 16. Also have a Drive titled **Update** in externals, which seems to show the Data and ?(Big Sur beta update?) maybe? (I haven't called it Update, and I'm not quite sure what it is) **IMAGE BELOW** 17. Tried Terminal commands to Verify **Data**, getting a variety of **Permission Denied** errors. **IMAGE BELOW** 18. Tried \\\ diskutil verifyDisk disk2 \\\ which gives: *Unable to verify this whole disk: A GUID Partition Table (GPT) partitioning scheme is required (-69773)* 19. Tried \\\ diskutil verifyDisk disk2s1 \\\ (that's the volume(?) with the data on) which gives: *"A whole disk must be specified"* 20. 21. Downloaded iBoysoft to try and recover data. 22. It can see the Data, but there's a padlock on the Drive and it's asking: *"Please enter the password of your encrypted APFS partition"* **IMAGE BELOW** 23. Wondering if this is a FireVault thing? I'm not sure if it's switched on, on the MBP or not. If it is, I have absolutely no idea what the **encrypted partition password** is, nor where I'd find such information. 24. Apparently, I can run iBoysoft Data Recovery in *macOS Recovery mode*. 25. I'm not sure if this will be complicated because I am also using **Target Disk Mode**, rather than running iBoysoft directly on the affected MBP, because I can't. A search of the iBoysoft FAQs fails to offer an answer to this query. Next Steps ---------- 26. Is there any point in creating *another* **Bootable Installer**, this time as APFS, rather than Extended Volume? 27. Where can I find the **encrypted APFS password** info? (I'm not convinced I have one, but it may have switched on by default?) I am a devil for recording passwords so if I was aware this existed, I absolutely would have made a note of it. What would it look like format-wise? 28. And where would I enter it for the Disk Utility or Terminal to be able to access *'MBP Macintosh HD - Data'*? 29. Would entering the command prompt \\\ sudo Fsck_APFS /dev/disk2s1 \\\ do anything helpful? 30. I have a 2019 MBP running Big Sur which thoughtfully simultaneously fell over. This happened while I was awaiting delivery of the super-fast Thunderbolt 3 cable to do the data transfer. It has refused to switch on since, so I am pretty much stuck with the 2011 iMac as rescuer for now. (And yes, I've tried all the usual suspects NVRAM, SMC on the dead second MBP etc) I am an absolute novice at all of this, so please speak ** s l o w l y ** to me in simple terms. This is my first post and I'm doing my best... Screenshots -------------- Update disk is mounted, but Macintosh HD - Data from MBP is unmounted and I cannot mount it Macintosh HD - Data from MBP is unmounted and I cannot mount it First Aid didn't work on the MBP Macintosh HD - Data Terminal distil repairVolume failed due to Permissions APFS Volume Data The specific Volume I need to access What iBoysoft is asking for, and mention of Recovery - see #27

I have problems with a windows game on Bootcamp that used to work fine, and now doesn't. So I tried making a bootable bootcamp on a USB. Bootcamp runs on the USB but I would say it doesn't run as well as on my mac's internal HDD. Windows tend to not respond a lot. Also, the 32bit windows game on the USB crashes from memory errors even though I use LargeAddressAware. The game does not crash on my original bootcamp and I can get the game to use over 2GB RAM and it doesn't crash. I think maybe getting my original bootcamp setup on the flash drive might fix my issue. I also want to use this USB to be able to test doing things without it messing up my original bootcamp. I have read that bootcamp can have problems from USB and it's better to clone your existing bootcamp to the USB. Using WintoUSB seems like a great option, but I have Windows 10 Pro, and you can't use WintoUSB with Windows 10 Pro. I have also read that you can create a .CDR image using Disk Utility and then convert it to an .iso; then I guess I can use Rufus maybe to burn it to the usb. But the problem is, the BOOTCAMP uses 100GB but is a 230GB partition. I have more than 100GB available on my mac, but not 230GB and it told me there's not enough space. Also, everything I try takes so long, so I want to know what will work because I'm getting nowhere when trying things myself. Can anyone suggest an easy way to clone BOOTCAMP (with Windows 10 Pro) to a USB? I have access to both Mac and Windows to do this from. Ideally I want it to clone directly so I don't have to store the 100GB or 230GB somewhere other than the USB drive.

I have a macbook Air 128 GB (2017) model. It was working fine, until I decided to reset it. I restarted and went into recovery mode, into Disk Utility and erased the “Macintosh HD” volume group. After that, the disk utility menu showed only the Apple SSD Volume, at which point I restarted the mac. It showed a folder with a question mark instead of the apple logo, which seemed fair since I had deleted the default startup volume. But, the issue was that I wasn’t able to go into the built-in recovery mode after that. Whenever I try to go into recovery mode now, It automatically goes to internet recovery which doesn’t even show a progress bar, just keeps failing and shows the error code 1003f. I tried the following already: 1. Resetting the NVRAM 2. Using an ethernet cable during Internet Recovery. 3. Tried to change my Startup Disk. Also, it shows Internet Recovery as the only option in this mode. I don’t know what to do now, please help.

I use to have a Bootcamp partition, which was about 100Gb, but it has disappeared from the boot options and I am not sure if it still exists on my HD. I am looking to sell this iMac, so I was going to try and remove this partition anyway, but I don't want to sell it if someone could recover it and access my login. I have been trying *Disk Utility > First Aid* on the drive I have also been running /sbin/fsck -fy in Single User mode. This is the current situation of my HDD. 1. Does the Windows partition still exist? 2. As I didn't remove the partition/windows installation properly from BootCamp Assistant, can it be recovered? 3. If I perform the *Recovery > Re-install MacOS* for the sale, will this wipe the entire 1TB disk properly? enter image description here EDIT After running diskutil ap resizecontainer disk2 0b I am getting the error object map is invalid enter image description here

Same issue as related in this thread but I already did the following: - Re-created a new GPT (GUID) partition table (using GParted, Ubuntu) - Created an HFS+ partition specifically for my MacOS - Re-created an EFI system partition of +500Mb And yet, when using the Internet Recovery Mode, two things happen: 1. The wrong MacOS is being downloaded (Mac OS X Yosemite, instead of Monterrey) 2. The HFS+ partition created does not show. ----------------- **What did I miss?** A possible solution would be to reformat the hard drive using Diskutil (Terminal, Recovery Mode) but no idea how to target the correct hard drive. ----------------- This what my partition table looks like from GParted: enter image description here And this is what my Disk Utility shows on Recovery Mode: enter image description here ----------------- Things to take into consideration: - I used to have an APFS hard drive before. But that must have been replaced by the HFS+ partition. - I did not use FileVault or encrypted the disk (have had a lot of problems in using that).

Had a 1TB hard drive in a Windows laptop that I replaced with an SSD. I've put the old hard drive in a USB enclosure so I can use it as an external drive. I plugged it into my Mac and opened disk utility where I saw two new mounted drives:
WINDOWS
RECOVERY
I clicked on the WINDOWS drive (981.9GB) and erased it to the ExFat format. However, the RECOVERY drive is still there (16.85GB). I've tried unplugging it, using the MacOS format, etc. but they still show up as separate drives. How can I merge these into one external hard drive?

After a reboot I am unable to mount an external USB-C SSD with Catalina 10.15.5 Disk Utility is recognizing the disk, I can see a "**disk3**" container with my APFS volume , but once I try to activate it I get a *com.apple.DiskManagement.disenter error 49218* When trying a diskutil repair I get : Started file system repair on disk3s1 1TB - SSD Repairing file system Volume is already unmounted Performing fsck_apfs -y -x /dev/rdisk3s1 Checking the container superblock Checking the space manager error: (oid 0xa550) cib: invalid o_cksum (0x0) error: failed to read spaceman cib 0xa550 Space manager is invalid The volume /dev/rdisk3s1 could not be verified completely File system check exit code is 0 Restoring the original state found as unmounted Finished file system repair on disk3s1 1TB - SSD But disk still cannot be activated afterwards. I already tried disk utility from recovery mode, no success... Also tried to connect the disk with another USB-C cable with no success... The disk is 4 months old and worked initially. What are my data recovery options?
