Same issue as related in this thread but I already did the following:
- Re-created a new GPT (GUID) partition table (using GParted, Ubuntu)
- Created an HFS+ partition specifically for my MacOS
- Re-created an EFI system partition of +500Mb
And yet, when using the Internet Recovery Mode, two things happen:
1. The wrong MacOS is being downloaded (Mac OS X Yosemite, instead of Monterrey)
2. The HFS+ partition created does not show.
-----------------
**What did I miss?**
A possible solution would be to reformat the hard drive using Diskutil (Terminal, Recovery Mode) but no idea how to target the correct hard drive.
-----------------
This what my partition table looks like from GParted:
And this is what my Disk Utility shows on Recovery Mode:
-----------------
Things to take into consideration:
- I used to have an APFS hard drive before. But that must have been replaced by the HFS+ partition.
- I did not use FileVault or encrypted the disk (have had a lot of problems in using that).

Why can macOS Big Sur format a USB flash drive but then can't mount it?

I have a USB flash drive and can format the stick, but when I try to mount it, the following error occurs:
Screenshot of an error message in German that reads:
> 'Mounting of 'Ohne Titel' has failed'
The error is in German, it means "Mounting of "Ohne Titel" has failed. (com.apple.DiskManagement.disenter -Error -119930873)"
I can't find any solutions online and don't know what to do.
There is no data on this stick so I can easily format it.

Which partition do I need to format or fix in order to install Sierra or lion?
I have tried in vain to get my MacBook Air back up and running. I did a system restore or reinstall a while back and something broke. I've tried command + R and a bootable USB, there doesn’t appear to be a time machine partition or option. [![enter image description here][1]][1] [

Does anyone have a Terminal command-line recipe for making a new bootable USB flash drive for one of the new MacBook Air's? Is there a way to dd copy the USB boot device that comes in the box and make the new copy bootable? I'd like to make a new backup copy of the USB rescue device for my MBA, preferably on a much larger flash drive with room for a backup of some of my working directories.
Added:
And is it possible to make, not just a rescue drive, but a bootable USB drive that will boot a fully updated version of the OS (say 10.6.8 or later)? If so how on a MacBook Air 11, and how big a USB stick will this require?

I want it to be like it just left the factory, at least in the software side. Like SMC and NVRAM reset etc. Or deleting the disk resets the things that I mentioned?
If not, when should I reset them? After deleting the disk and before installing the High Sierra (I will downgrade from Mojave to High Sierra) or after installing the High Sierra?
And are there any other things that can be reset like SMC and NVRAM? If there are, please mention them.

When I purchased the subject laptop last year I replaced the original Apple SSD with a non-Apple 2 TB SSD. For years I have always kept OS and data on separate drives or at least separate partitions. That always made backups and moving data to new machines simple for me. This time I struggled to create that same arrangement, but it proved too difficult.
I sat down recently to attempt to resolve the mess I created. It appears I had created a 1.05 TB and a .95 TB partition on the SSD. The 1.05 TB partition contained a "container" that contained my OS and data in a couple of "volumes". The remaining .95 TB partition of the SSD was simply a wasteland.
Over the last couple of days I have made numerous attempts to erase/reformat any or all of the SSD but the Disk Utility simply will not allow any of that (erase is ghosted). I have tried changing the size of the first partition, but Disk Utility will not allow that either. Next I tried a few things with diskutil in terminal but do not seem to be making any progress there either. Command + R and Command + Option + R did not work for me because Disk Utility there only shows disk0/OS X Base System, neither of which can be erased, and Reinstall OS X cannot find any drive at all for the install.
So, in summary, help! If I do a
diskutil list
in Terminal I see disk0 thru disk13... and that can't be right. I want to reformat and start over but nothing seems to get me there. Currently there is no important data on this machine. Oh, laptop still works fine, I just can't live with system and data on same partition.
Some of my symptoms sound similar to Redrighthand's "MacBook-pro Internal PCIe Samsung 512g SSD no longer recognized on MBP (mid 2015 15" A1398)" .
Thanks in advance for any help. First screenshot below of diskutil list taken in recovery mode, second screenshot taken of terminal after normal boot. Last two screenshots are of Disk Utility...

The card became unreadable after I used to extend the hard drive space of an Android 13 tablet. I tried Windows 10 and Android 13 to reformat the card, but they do not even recognize the drive. I do not have an older Android device at the moment, but I would appreciate if anyone that can reproduce or has had this error and would be kind enough to report.

How do I remove the partition?
It's completely empty now and I've cleared it by formatting it but I want to completely remove the partition and merge the free space back into the bigger partition.
I've tried doing this but it doesn't work in Terminal:
diskutil eraseVolume format name device
diskutil eraseVolume HFS+ awer disk1s4
It didn't work:
Started erase on disk1s4 asdf
Unmounting disk

I'm new to OS Development, and I want to format a 1.44MB floppy image with the FAT12 file system. I created the disk using
dd if=/dev/zero of= bs=512 count=2880
, so it's just a raw image filled with zeros. Next, I wanted to create the file system. The guy in the tutorial used mkfs.fat12
, but I'm working on MacOS.
The only command I've found for formatting disks there is newfs_msdos -f 2880 -F 12
.
But that commands just prints an error: newfs_msdos: Inappropriate ioctl for device: build/disk2.img: Cannot get partition offset
I've also found diskutil eraseDisk
, but that only works for a mounted device, not for disk images, and I can't mount a disk image if it has no working file system.
I'd be thankful if someone knows a command that works for floppy images, or if someone can tell me what triggered this error and how I can avoid it.
How can I tell the command that there is no partitions or offsets, and I just want to format the whole disk?

I recently purchased a Sandisk Extreme SSD to work with Mac and Android.
1. Is it possible to create 2 exFAT partitions of the drive? (Currently, I managed to do a combination of exFAT and HFS/Mac OS Extended (Journaled))
2. Is it possible to change the allocation size using Disk Utility on Mac?
Running the command:
diskutil info /Volumes/PartitionName/ | grep "Block Size"
gives the default sector size as:
# For exFAT partition
Device Block Size: 512 Bytes
Allocation Block Size: 131072 Bytes
# For Mac OS Extended partition
Device Block Size: 512 Bytes
Allocation Block Size: 4096 Bytes
However, I didn't get the option to decide the allocation block size while partitioning/erasing the disk on Mac. Am I missing something?
Also, what should be the appropriate allocation size considering I am planning to store photos, documents and backup data? For eg. this [review](https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/R2P6K0OF0PX858?ASIN=B078STRHBX#R2P6K0OF0PX858) suggests formatting the hard disk before using with appropriate allocation size on Windows (like 128kb).
If we follow the answer provided [here](https://apple.stackexchange.com/a/213888/395465) , could you please explain how to change allocation size (instead of device block size) with newfs_exfat

External SSD partition map damaged, can't format (69773/found zeroed-out block/69623)

So my external SSD (1TB Samsung 970 evo plus in an Orico TB3 housing) died. I unmounted it but probably didn't wait long enough and unplugged the drive before completing the unmounting procedure. So the partition map got damaged and I couldn't mount it. I managed to save all data on it with Easeus, but I'm unable to format it. In Disk Utility it only sees the container.
Things I tried:
Disk Utility: I tried first aid and formatting, they failed (for formatting: 69623), both in normal mode and recovery mode.
Terminal: I tried to force unmount (diskutil unmountDisk force /dev/disk0), it failed.
Single user: I tried unmounting and it says: not currently mounted.
Formatting on a Windows machine: it doesn't even recognize it at all.
Could I theoretically try to format the disk in terminal without ejecting it first?
Weird thing is that in single user mode, when the disk is plugged in, there's a disk0, disk0s1, disk0s2 which I think is this external drive (the internal is supposed to be disk1 with more partitions), but when unplug it and replug it, there's still a disk0, disk0s1, disk0s2, AND a disk2 and a disk3. Maybe the disk0 is the one that I should try to unmount because it's stuck?
diskutil info says:

I'm not a computer scientist or anything, all I "know" is from reading stuff on google.
Any help appreciated!
