How to put blank lines between bullets in macOS Mail?
In macOS Mail, when adding lines to a bullet list, there is no space between the lines. For long list items with multiple sentences, it would be better to separate the list items with blank lines. How can I do that?

I use Apple Mail daily, and up until recently I could have images inside my mail by referencing an external source. However the external source has since become unavailable, so ideally I would like to embed the images into my mail signatures. I am pretty good with creating the signature in HTML and create the webarchive for it, however have no idea where to begin as far as embedding the images are concerned.
Has anyone actually done this, or know of a very good resource that I can use to figure it out?

I'm currently using Pages to write a rather long essay and have run into an annoying problem I can't seem to find the answer to. I have included a bibliography in my document and have referenced the bibliography elsewhere in the essay with `
where
1` is the book number I am referencing. Here is an example sentence:
> Here we see , "the quick brown fox", jumps over the "Lazy dog".
My intention is to format the sentence like this:
> Here we see , "the quick brown fox" , jumps over the "Lazy dog".
Whilst I understand you can select the text, click Format, Font, Baseline and select Superscript; this would take an extremely long time to do as there are around 100 places where I would need to do this.
Is there a way to find and replace a string, e.g. with , throughout the whole document?

The .pages file continually opens in adobe vs the mac file, and the format must be adjusted.
One issue I need help with is the Table of Contents. I have used Format/Text/Tabs to separate the page #s from the chapter titles, but some of the page numbers remain snuggled up to the title. AND the "leader" will not install the ... between title and page # as it should. Ideas?

For years I have used Cmd+Shift+C to copy text style in Microsoft Word, and then Cmd+Shift+V to paste the style. Recently when I'm in Word (or Excel) and type Cmd+Shift+C it always opens my Calendar program (which happens to be BusyCal, though I don't think that's pertinent to this issue). I can copy the style by clicking on the format paintbrush, and then paste the style using Cmd+Shift+V. But can't copy using Cmd+Shift+C.
I've checked "Customize Keyboard" in MS Word and it shows Cmd+Shift+C as the shortcut to copy the style. I've checked **System Preferences** > **Keyboard** > **Shortcuts**, no issue there. I've checked Keyboard Maestro, which I use for lots of shortcuts, and nothing is defined in there for Cmd+Shift+C. I don't know what else to try. Restarting my Mac seemed to fix the problem for at least one copy and paste of a style, but then it goes back to opening my calendar (and often creating an event with the text I had copied!). The issue occurs in Word & Excel, but not in PowerPoint.
Help! I use the Cmd+Shift+C keyboard shortcut a hundred times a day!

Recently got a new Macbook Pro 13″ and I'm preparing my old Macbook Air for sale. I'm following steps in the [Apple Support article](http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5189) on this topic (as well as other similar articles I've found).
I'm currently at the stage of Erasing the startup disk. I've booted my machine with ⌘R and am running Disk Utility. Initially I was able to set Security Options to Most Secure (7 pass zeros), but after I clicked Erase there was some error and it said it could not be completed.
Now Security Options is grayed out (unavailable), however Erase is still available.
The error occurred after only seconds, so I'm assuming it did not actually complete a 7 pass erase and rewrite before stopping. Guessing that means my data is still there and relatively accessible.
Is there anyway to re-access the Security Options and get this thing to securely wipe from this point?

Prior to Sonoma, when using TextEdit (virtually always editing rich text docs), I could select any text and add/remove a style to whatever styles were present in the text. For example, if I had a sentence: This is an example of **bold**, and I wanted to use *italics* for the whole sentence, I simply selected the whole sentence and clicked the *I* button. Simple, and common to most editors.
In Sonoma, however, if I select the wole sentence, the menu options become gray/disabled. I am forced to first select the non-bold part, italicize it, then select the bold part, and italicize that. Since I edit docs extensively, this requires a LOT of extra time.
I've searched haven't found anyone else mentioning this change, so I'm wondering if it is specific to my machine? Or some setting I'm missing? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

The way that the Pages app handles straight and smart quotes is clunky and problematic. Is there a way to fix it? Here's the problem.
**Update: I assumed when asking this question that "straight apostrophes" are correct even in styles where "curly quotes" are correct. On further research, however, I can't find examples of published works using this mix. This question and its answer (below) may still be of use to people with the same false assumption I had—if they exist.**
If you disable smart quotes (via Settings > Auto-Correction -> "Use Smart Quotes and Dashes"), then apostrophes are placed correctly but double and single quotes are "straight". For example:
> She said, "She's telling me, 'That's no moon.'"
If you enable smart quotes, the quotes are now all correct, but apostrophes (at "She's" and "That's") are now changed to curly quotes.
> She said, “She’s telling me, ‘That’s no moon.’”
This is *also* incorrect. Correct would be to use curly quotes (double and single) but a "straight" apostrophe, thus:
> She said, “She's telling me, ‘That's no moon.’”
An apostrophe is not the same as a single quote. In the interest of clarity, in terms of HTML what is correct would be (I've typed HTML here, though it may appear as normal text, but at least formatted correctly):
> She said, "She's telling me, 'That's no moon.'"
The question, then, is: is there a setting in Pages that enables it to type English correctly, as many other word processors do; that is, to use curly quotes in general but to automatically recognize apostrophes and place them where appropriate? And to be clear, I'm not asking how to type straight apostrophes manually. I know that Ctrl+' will type a straight quote. If Pages required me to do that it would be the only word processor I know of that does so. I'm asking whether it knows how to do so automatically?

How do I remove the partition?
It's completely empty now and I've cleared it by formatting it but I want to completely remove the partition and merge the free space back into the bigger partition.
I've tried doing this but it doesn't work in Terminal:
diskutil eraseVolume format name device
diskutil eraseVolume HFS+ awer disk1s4
It didn't work:
Started erase on disk1s4 asdf
Unmounting disk
Error: -69879: Couldn't open disk

I am not 100% sure, but if I remember correctly, about 6 months ago I, somehow, managed to retain the width of the note window and its dark background while exporting a note.
How can I export my notes with the correct formatting?

Here is a simple sequence of actions in TextEdit in macOS 10.13.6 that produces an unexpected side-effect. I don’t understand why, and would like to know how to prevent it.
1. Create a new document in TextEdit (using ⌘-n or menu item File ➜ New).
2. Look at the style bar at the top, and note the font & font size. The font that TextEdit uses at this point is what I set in my TextEdit preferences for "Rich Text Font". (In my case, Roboto 14pt.)
3. Capture an image to the clipboard, e.g., using the [standard macOS facility](https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201361) for capturing a portion of the screen as an image to the clipboard. (Any image will do.)
4. Paste the image in the document (using ⌘-v or menu item Edit ➜ Paste).
5. Look at the style bar again: the **font & font size have changed** to Helvetica 12pt.
This affects text that you type in the document: if you type text before you paste in an image, the text will be in the font and font size you set in your preferences; once you paste in an image, any text that you type in the document after the location of the image will use a different font & font size. (It is not merely a glitch in the style displayed in the style bar.)
**Why does the font change?** What controls this behavior? **And how can I make it stop changing**, so that text typed after step #4 continues to be the font set in my “Rich Text & Note Font” preference instead of being switched to Helvetica 12pt?
In case it is relevant, here is an image of my TextEdit Preferences panel:

Surely there is a way to start a new chapter without this. The template I am using now has an icon as well and makes it extra sloppy. Thank you in advance for any advice.

The first image, where the H2 says 'Experience', shows the correct amount of spacing after the H2. The second image, 'Volunteering', shows 0 spacing after the H2, even though it is set to 10pt spacing after the paragraph. What can I do to get the 10pt spacing to be applied? I have tried to apply spacing before paragraph to the 2 columns but that doesn't work, and I would rather have the spacing applied to the H2 anyway. I could add a blank line after the H2 but again I would like this to be consistent across the document and this should not be difficult.

I'm trying to create an Automator Service that will act on selected text, converting dashes to spaces, and also making word caps for all the text.
A friend gave me this python script (I know nothing about python or shell scripting):
#! /usr/bin/python
cliptext = "%clipboard"
print cliptext.replace('-', ' ').replace('%', ' ').replace('&', ' and ').replace('#', ' ').title()
It works great as a TextExpander snippet, but I'd like to have it available in the Services menu as well. I don't need it to use any specific scripting language, it just needs to run within Automator. My coding buddy had no experience with Automator so he couldn't help out. His script requires copying the text to the clipboard, and then runs the formatting and pastes the result. I'd like to be able to just run this on the selected text and not have to deal with the Clipboard (at least manually).
The particular use for this is to rename photo uploads on Flickr, since Flickr uses the filename to generate the photo name. When exporting artwork via Photoshop or Illustrator using Save For Web, the lowercase and dashes are my default settings. I want to be able to highlight the Flickr title, and then run the Service to reformat the file name to a properly formatted title.
