How to add a caption to an image in Pages

You can set a ‘Description’ on an image, however that only affects voiceover, which I do appreciate! But I also want the ability to move the image and it’s caption together. I am using Pages 5.5.2, I understand that this is easier in Pages ’09, but I don't have that version anymore… ***Edit:*** The only method that I have found that vaguely works is to create a new text box, manually make the text box the same size as the image, and text, set the paragraph style to caption, and, *finally*, group the image and the text box together so that they are treated as a unit. I hope that there is a simpler way that I have just missed somehow!

I struggling to perform a custom mail merge. My goal is to print drawer labels for my parts organizer, using a Numbers file that contains two columns (fields): the **[name]** of each discrete component and its **[value]**. The mail merge pane, however, is blank with no available options for creating a data field. I suspect it can only be added by connecting to a data source first, but there's no option for it either. Unfortunately, every example I’ve found only demonstrates using Contacts as the data source, and they all rely on Pages built-in templates. While there are mentions of using Numbers files for mail merge, I can’t find instructions on how to link it to a Pages document. It seems like Pages’ Mail Merge functionality might be designed to work only with contact data, rather than supporting general-purpose custom data. Is this correct, or is there a way to accomplish my goal?

I'm currently using Pages to write a rather long essay and have run into an annoying problem I can't seem to find the answer to. I have included a bibliography in my document and have referenced the bibliography elsewhere in the essay with ` where 1` is the book number I am referencing. Here is an example sentence: > Here we see , "the quick brown fox", jumps over the "Lazy dog". My intention is to format the sentence like this: > Here we see , "the quick brown fox" , jumps over the "Lazy dog". Whilst I understand you can select the text, click Format, Font, Baseline and select Superscript; this would take an extremely long time to do as there are around 100 places where I would need to do this. Is there a way to find and replace a string, e.g. with , throughout the whole document?

I don't know why, but Pages just started doing this... creating an empty folder in Documents. Also, upon every reinstall of OSX, I immediately disable automatic software update across the system. I never tinker with those settings. So, in troubleshooting the Pages issue... I noticed that auto-update has been toggled on for the app. How? - Pages syncing and storage with iCloud always disabled. - I have not reinstalled my OSX and apps for several months. - I have not changed the Apple ID used with my iMac. - I have not purchased/linked a new Apple device with this iCloud account. - I only use iCloud to sync mail with my iMac... nothing more. I'm hoping there is a way to shoot a terminal command to stop this. Ideas? iMac 24 M1. Sonoma 14.7.4. Pages 14.3. Auto folder creation

In my iCloud storage it says that just over 100kb are being used by Pages. I used to use Pages a while back but never saved anything to iCloud drive. On checking iCloud drive there were no documents in there. I'm confused about what data Pages is saving to my iCloud - I know it is a very small amount of memory taken up but just wanted to know if anyone knows what might be saved in there and if it safe to delete it. There is also around 20kb taken up by iCloud drive - other documents, no idea what this is either. As seen in the screenshots below there are no documents in either section - just 'data' - whatever that is.enter image description here enter image description here enter image description here

I would like to make a 'spreads' view of it, this means that page 1 and page 16 (cover and backcover) should remain A4 size while all the pages in between should become A3 size. I tried the following: 1. Using Preview.app I can display the pdf the way I want but I can't save it for use with any other pdf viewer. 2. Print to pdf the in between pages with the "multiple pages per sheet" option doesn't work for me because page margins are inserted in between the a4 pages. I know some a good pdf editor can do this but these tools are expensive and I don't need it for anything else. With Windows I used a simple freeware tool. Do you know how to do it for Mac?

I have the following applescript as the sole component of an Automator app:
on run {input, parameters}
	repeat with theFile in input
		tell application "Pages"
			set theDoc to open theFile
			set theDocName to name of theDoc
            -- I implemented the sanitization of spaces to underscores in hope of fixing this present issue but it has not helped.
			set sanitizedDocName to do shell script "echo " & quoted form of theDocName & " | sed -e 's/ /_/g'"
			set theName to sanitizedDocName & "-auto-text"
			display dialog (":Users:slu:automator-text-export:" & theName & ".txt")
			export front document to file (":Users:slu:automator-text-export:" & theName & ".txt") as unformatted text
			close theDoc saving no
		end tell
	end repeat
	return input
end run
I think the intention is self-explanatory. I can use the snippets I already found online to ask finder for the path the input file was from, e.g.:
tell application "Finder"
            -- Actually theFilesFolder is unused here
			set theFilesFolder to (folder of theFile) as text
		end tell
This snippet works to successfully export to a place relative to the files' original positions. But I specifically want to make all my exports go into a predermined hardcoded directory, but I'm failing here on where I can find documentation on how to build a proper AppleScript representation of a filesystem location. I've also tried assembling the path with just slashes instead of colons but it makes for a different kind of error ("Could not be exported as ").

The way that the Pages app handles straight and smart quotes is clunky and problematic. Is there a way to fix it? Here's the problem. **Update: I assumed when asking this question that "straight apostrophes" are correct even in styles where "curly quotes" are correct. On further research, however, I can't find examples of published works using this mix. This question and its answer (below) may still be of use to people with the same false assumption I had—if they exist.** If you disable smart quotes (via Settings > Auto-Correction -> "Use Smart Quotes and Dashes"), then apostrophes are placed correctly but double and single quotes are "straight". For example: > She said, "She's telling me, 'That's no moon.'" If you enable smart quotes, the quotes are now all correct, but apostrophes (at "She's" and "That's") are now changed to curly quotes. > She said, “She’s telling me, ‘That’s no moon.’” This is *also* incorrect. Correct would be to use curly quotes (double and single) but a "straight" apostrophe, thus: > She said, “She's telling me, ‘That's no moon.’” An apostrophe is not the same as a single quote. In the interest of clarity, in terms of HTML what is correct would be (I've typed HTML here, though it may appear as normal text, but at least formatted correctly): > She said, "She's telling me, 'That's no moon.'" The question, then, is: is there a setting in Pages that enables it to type English correctly, as many other word processors do; that is, to use curly quotes in general but to automatically recognize apostrophes and place them where appropriate? And to be clear, I'm not asking how to type straight apostrophes manually. I know that Ctrl+' will type a straight quote. If Pages required me to do that it would be the only word processor I know of that does so. I'm asking whether it knows how to do so automatically?
