Strange spellcheck behavior in Big Sur suggesting input manipulation
I type the following in TextEdit and Notes on my mac (11.7.10, Intel): Just to overt. Just to overt go. Just to overt goi. Just to overt goin. Just to overt going. Just to overt going on. I type the following in TextEdit and Notes on my mac (11.7.10, Intel):
Just to overt.
Just to overt go.
Just to overt goi.
Just to overt goin.
Just to overt going.
Just to overt going on.
Just tu overt going.
Just toi overt going.
Just to overt.
The only words underlined in red as unrecognized are "tu", "toi", and "to" in the last 3 lines but not in the first 3 or final line. Why is this? I check the ascii codes in Terminal and they are the same in all 7 lines containing "to".
Right now at least, this only seems to affect native programs, for example on StackExchange in Firefox, all expected words are underlined (tu, toi, goi, goin) but when I edit the same post in Safari I get the same behavior as Notes and Text Edit but if I create a new line the underline might appear or disappear but it ONLY appears or disappears for the "to" in lines 4-6. I have checked all visible user changes to the dictionary and of course the word "to" is in the dictionary, also the word can be looked up in all 7 lines and returns the correct definition for "to" despite ctrl + click suggesting I replace it with "too".
I understand a good "fix" for this problem might be to reinstall a clean copy of the OS but I would really like to identify the change causing the behavior first so I can check for it again (it also affects other words such as "by"), whatever is changing the attributes of the characters I type.
So I think there is some algorithm which changes what I type as the characters themselves seem to be modified in a way that only the operating system can interpret. I don't think it's a bug, I think some oversight in the software has been taken advantage of by a malicious actor.
Some more examples:
Just to overt going.
Just to overt doing.
Just to overt having.
Just to overt swimming.
Just to overt knitting.
Just to overt welding.
Just to overt simming.
Just to overt knitaing.
Just to overt weling.
Just to overt kniting.
Just to overt kkniting.
Just to overt knituing.
Can you guess which groups have "to" underlined?
>! Groups 1, 3, and 5.
Another reason why I don't want to wipe the OS, I strongly believe this interference has been tailored to me specifically (based on words I use and my usage patterns) and so it's particularly important I find out how in order to better understand why in order to avoid this kind of sabotage in the future (not just in macOS, especially with the existence now of malware on mobile operating systems which apparently cannot be traced or wiped).

I want my iOS to recognise both UK and US spellings as correct, but prioritise one over the other, depending on which is the primary language used (but that's secondary).
I came across solutions, notably this one: which could not be reproduced on an iPhone. It would still mark one of the spellings as incorrect.
I also came across a solution to [force UK spelling](https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/161999/how-can-i-make-sure-my-iphone-uses-uk-spelling-and-keyboard#162004) , on the basis of which I tried to implement what I want, but was unsuccessful.
I think it's a matter of what version of English the keyboard is set to. Likewise, I could not find the “English” or “General English” option for keyboard language, which is something I sometime see on the web that reconciles both spellings.

How can I disable iOS from changing what I type into another, longer word without losing suggestions above the keyboard?
After a recent update of iOS, the keyboard started acting possessed and turns my sentences into something totally different. If I type: How long ago was that? If I type:
How long ago was that?
When I look at my sentence it says:
How long agony was that?
If I type:
Thanks for your help!
The keyboard types:
Thanksgiving for your help!
And if I ever mistype it gets worse, when:
Thanks gor that!
turns into:
Thanks gorgeous that!
I would love to revert my settings to a time when I had suggestions of words the OS was assuming I was trying to type displayed right above the keyboard, and not have to deal with these usually erroneous assumptions of what I'm trying to type.
But I feel like it's either no suggestions at all, or everything being replaced by the OS's assumption.

However, it seems that "anbalagous" isn't in
~/Library/Spelling/LocalDictionary
, so it's a bit of a mystery. Out of curiosity, I would like to check which file the word "anbalagous" appears in. So:
* where are the spell check dictionary file(s) located on a Mac?
* is there any location other than ~/Library/Spelling/LocalDictionary
where custom words are stored for the system spell checker?
* if (as I suspect) the dictionary is stored in a binary file, is there a way to see the list of words in it?
* (Probably not but might as well check) does a Mac's spell checker dictionary contain the word "anbalagous" by default?
In case it makes a difference I'm still on OS X 10.11.

When I make a spelling error in a document, Lion gives me the option to correct the error by right-clicking (or ctrl-clicking, two-finger tapping, etc) on the misspelled word and bringing up the context menu.
How can I open this menu from the keyboard? And is it possible to access the Context Menu from a Mac keyboard?

For the last few versions of Safari, and lots of other programs now that I think about it, on-the-fly spell checking with the red underline is not working. Automatic replacement does work, and I can see a red underline in this editor (amusingly, on the word "Safari" because of the comma I think), but I am not seeing it in other editors like the Wiki. For instance, I have selected a term that is spelled incorrectly, yet there is no red underline (and no, unselecting it doesn't make it appear):
I went to check the option in the menu, and found this:
Can anyone offer a reason why this is greyed out?

[Esperanto](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esperanto) is an artificially constructed language which has about 2 millions speakers globally. Understandably, macOS doesn't come with an Esperanto language dictionary / spellchecker preinstalled. I've compiled a list of roughly 70,000 Esperanto words in a .dic format.
Going to System Settings -> Keyboard -> Clicking on "Edit" in Input Sources -> Spelling, at the bottom it shows "Set Up..."
The setup dialog specifies that additional spelling dictionaries can be added to the Library/Spelling folder in the format of .dic and .aff
I've copied my Esperanto .dic and .aff files to that location. It then shows as an option in the Spelling section, which I ensure to select
With that being said, spellcheck does not work. Opening up "Pages" application, all my Esperanto words are still underlined with red squiggles. In Pages I've even specified the "Esperanto (Library)" in the spellcheck, and it still doesn't seem to register.
These are the dictionary files (.dic, .aff) I am currently using: [REMOVED]()
[This](https://jiradett.medium.com/add-new-language-to-mac-spell-check-ae7f2a7480fd) is the tutorial I was following
What am I doing wrong?
Edit: I called Apple support this morning. I spoke to a senior advisor and he was not aware of how to correctly configure my own custom spellchecker on Mac.
Edit #2: Solved. Check out this tutorial on how to configure it:

https://mastodon.social/@gruber/112560468582323979
In my case, the file is actually at
~/Library/Spelling/LocalDictionary
, because I'm crazy and run an ancient version of macOS (10.9 Mavericks). I don't _think_ this is relevant to the rest of my question.
After taking a peek at LocalDictionary
, something caught my attention. ~/Library/Spelling/
contains another text file, en
, which like localdictionary
contains one word per line. These words are different from the ones in localdictionary
, but like locationdictionary
they seem like things I probably typed over the past few years and wanted spellcheck to learn about. For example, it contains the name of the organization I work for, and some people I know with unusual first names.
What is this en
file, and how is it populated? Why do some words end up in en
while others end up in LocalDictionary
?
(I assume that on modern macOS, the equivalent file is located in ~/Library/Group Containers/group.com.apple.AppleSpell/Library/Spelling/en
)

This has been going on for way too long and I'm hoping someone can help me.
For whatever reason, the last two Macs I've had have stopped autocorrecting the word 'hte'. I could of course just learn how to type 'the' but I feel like since the computer is autocorrecting everything else I type, I'm not sure why it is so difficult to correct this obvious typo. This is seemingly the only word my Mac struggles with.
I could make a text substitution via keyboard in System Preferences but this would only work for certain apps (and it wouldn't cover all the different permutations that I would need like Hte etc.) I've tried looking and I think the word isn't in my dictionary and I can't 'unlearn' hte so I'm not sure what's wrong.
Has anyone a solution to fix this?

Is it possible to get Grammarly checking system-wide on MacOS? As far as I know, Grammarly only works as a browser plugin or Microsoft Office plugin (maybe more). Grammarly is fantastic, but the need to copy and paste my work into a designated Grammarly field is beyond inconvenient. Even a menu bar icon with a checker would be more convenient. I mainly work with 3rd-Party apps on Mac that don't have a Grammarly plugin.
I like how on iPhone Grammarly is a keyboard extension that captures your spelling live as you type.
What are some alternatives if this is impossible?

However how can I tell macOS to add a specific correction to a wrongly spelled word, the system does not suggest by default? Example: I type **

(*) BTW, the third-party command line speller hunspell

(a spellcheck dictionary for terminal editors) to the system-wide macOS spellcheck.
cocoAspell
has since deprecated.

**Questions**:
- Is improving the default macOS spellcheck dictionary still as desirable as it once was?
- Is there any alternative means to bring such an improved spellcheck dictionary (such as Aspell

I read here that macOS now uses Hunspell
and AppleSpell
as spellcheck tools. (I couldn't call Hunspell
from the terminal; does that mean it doesn't exist or that I simply cannot access system packages by default?)
- Could a package such as enchant
perform this?

I am writing mostly in English and I use the default "ABC" layout on macbook with macOS Monterey.
Sometimes I get an email in different languages.
I reply them in the same language.
I don't want to change keyboard layout, because I wouldn't know where the letters are.
However, apple mail now keeps typo-correcting them into English words.
The only way to make spellcheck work correctly, is to change the keyboard layout, resulting in constant mistyping as letters are moved around.
Does anyone have a suggestion, how to keep an email's language in say German, while typing on the English-ABC keyboard?
Thank you and Happy Holidays!
(Some languages may have the ABC layout, but not the ones I use.)
