I want my iOS to recognise both UK and US spellings as correct, but prioritise one over the other, depending on which is the primary language used (but that's secondary).
I came across solutions, notably this one: which could not be reproduced on an iPhone. It would still mark one of the spellings as incorrect.
I also came across a solution to [force UK spelling](https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/161999/how-can-i-make-sure-my-iphone-uses-uk-spelling-and-keyboard#162004) , on the basis of which I tried to implement what I want, but was unsuccessful.
I think it's a matter of what version of English the keyboard is set to. Likewise, I could not find the “English” or “General English” option for keyboard language, which is something I sometime see on the web that reconciles both spellings.

Locating the file in which a dictionary word is stored

However, it seems that "anbalagous" isn't in
~/Library/Spelling/LocalDictionary
, so it's a bit of a mystery. Out of curiosity, I would like to check which file the word "anbalagous" appears in. So:
* where are the spell check dictionary file(s) located on a Mac?
* is there any location other than ~/Library/Spelling/LocalDictionary
where custom words are stored for the system spell checker?
* if (as I suspect) the dictionary is stored in a binary file, is there a way to see the list of words in it?
* (Probably not but might as well check) does a Mac's spell checker dictionary contain the word "anbalagous" by default?
In case it makes a difference I'm still on OS X 10.11.

I wanted to verify my understanding of the Greek phrase "hoi poloi", which has been borrowed by English, so I typed it into Safari's search bar and was prompted with a suggested dictionary entry. I clicked on it and was taken to a page on Dictionary.com that had virtually nothing other than ads and similar assorted trash. Nowhere on the page was any definition of "hoi poloi"
This is obviously totally useless. I don't know whether the fault is with Safari or (more likely) with Dictionary.com or something in between, but it doesn't really matter—it simply needs to be fixed somehow. How or where can I configure this to behave differently. The worst acceptable case is that I just disable this and am not lured off the normal path of searching through DuckDuckGo.com/search.Brave.com/whatever, which actually works.
I'm using Safari 16.1 (17614.2.9.1.13, 17614) on macOS 12.6 (21G115). Safari's search engine is set to DuckDuckGo.

Dictionary
** app and *Visual Studio Code* don't work well together. I get constant popups from **Dictionary
**, an app that I **have not**, and **will not** ever use.
I've followed the instructions in [Apple's Support Forum](https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251147716?sortBy=rank) :
- Open System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts
- Click Services in the left column
- In the Searching section, click the arrow to expand the options
- Remove the checkmark from "Look Up in Dictionary"
This stopped *most* of the popups, but on occasion, **Dictionary
** shows up to haunt me while using **VSC.**
I tried nuking it from terminal
:
sudo rm -rf /System/Applications/Dictionary.app
Which results in a screen full of error errors:
rm: Dictionary.app: Operation not permitted
I currently running a **Macbook Pro 2017**, with Ventura 13.6.7
.
I recall in the older versions of the OS, you had to boot into the recovery drive to remove system files, or enable system-wide full disk access, but I don't know the best solution using Ventura
.
What is the best approach to this problem? Nuke the app, or find another way?
How can I delete/disable the **Dictionary
** app, permanently?

The problem is my wrist has been bothering me as I use the trackpad so I decided to get an ergonomic mouse (logitech mx master 2s) but now I can't seem to figure out how to mirror this 'look up word in osx dictionary' behavior.
I looked at

defaults read -g
but nothing stood out. How can I use a mouse + keyboard option to mirror this 'look up' word behavior that force currently has on my trackpad?

This has been going on for way too long and I'm hoping someone can help me.
For whatever reason, the last two Macs I've had have stopped autocorrecting the word 'hte'. I could of course just learn how to type 'the' but I feel like since the computer is autocorrecting everything else I type, I'm not sure why it is so difficult to correct this obvious typo. This is seemingly the only word my Mac struggles with.
I could make a text substitution via keyboard in System Preferences but this would only work for certain apps (and it wouldn't cover all the different permutations that I would need like Hte etc.) I've tried looking and I think the word isn't in my dictionary and I can't 'unlearn' hte so I'm not sure what's wrong.
Has anyone a solution to fix this?

I would like to use the spellchecking dictionaries bundled with OS X from the command line (
hunspell

, and find / -name '*.dic'

I know I can dowload dictionaries from OpenOffice etc., but I'd like to find the ones bundled with OS X.
**EDIT** To clarify, there are at least two kinds of dictionaries in OS X:
- Definitions used in Dictionary.app. I'm not interested in those.
- Word lists used by the system spellchecker (red dotted lines). I know OS X uses hunspell because [the hunspell website](http://hunspell.sourceforge.net/) says so, and there are numerous posts on how to add new ones ((https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/11827/easy-way-to-install-additional-spell-check-dictionaries-for-os-x) , (https://code.google.com/p/texworks/wiki/SpellingDictionaries)) . Just, I don't want to add new ones but use the English one that obviously comes with the system.

In macOS I can _Right click -> Learn Spelling_ on a word for which the system thinks it is wrongly spelled, but (for me) it is spelled correctly. The word then gets added to my personal dictionary.
However how can I tell macOS to add a specific correction to a wrongly spelled word, the system does not suggest by default? Example: I type **

After several times of having my MacBook shutdown and losing the several tabs I had opened of the words I looked up, I've started to look for a solution.
I'm currently trying to implement a script that looks up a word in the Dictionary app on Mac and extracts its definition and example, then saves it in a file called Dictionary Look Up Service History Log File.txt. However, I am encountering some issues with the script and would appreciate any help that I can get.
Here's what the script should do: the user enters a word, the script checks if the word contains any invalid characters, opens the Dictionary app, looks up the word, extracts its definition and example and saves it in a file, formats the result, and displays it in a dialog box.
I have tried to run the script, but I keep getting errors. I suspect that I might have made a mistake in the syntax, but I am not sure where. I would be grateful if someone could take a look at my script and help me identify any errors that I might have made.

It's very crucial that the definitions stored are also organized like this (for e.g.):

I’m using the apple pencil on Ipad and work with a lot of abbreviations. So every-time I write one, it will be replaced with whatever is the closest match in the English dictionary. I can work around that by adding the abbreviations in the user dictionary (settings - general - keyboard - text replacement).
So I often find myself going to this setting to add a new abbreviation.
I would like to make this a bit easier by creating a shortcut that can do it for me. So far, all I can do is a shortcut that will take me to the “text replacement” page :
prefs:root=General&path=Keyboard/USER_DICTIONARY
It’s ok but I wish I could just ask for input and push this into the user dictionary all through the shortcut.
Is there a way to do this?
